They do all kinds of things that you do not even notice. For example, the simple, ordinary food that everybody must buy, like bread, milk, flour, and vegetable oil, is spread all over the store. You have to walk by all the more interesting and more expensive things in order to find what you need. The more expensive food is in package with bright-colored pictures. This food is placed at eye level so you see it and want to buy it. The things that you have to buy anyway are usually located on a higher or lower staff. However, candy and other things that children like are on lower shelves. One study showed that when a supermarket moved four products from floor to eye level, it was sold 78 percent more.Another study showed that for every minute a person in a supermarket after the first half hour, she or he spends $50. If someone stays forty minutes, the supermarket has an additional $5. So the store has a comfortable temperature in summer and winter, and it plays soft music. It is a pleasant place for people to stay and spend more money. Some stores have red or pink lights over the meat so the meat looks redder. They put light green paper around lettuce and put apples in red plastic bags.So be careful in the supermarket. You may go home with a bag of food you were not planning to buy. The supermarket, not you, decided you should buy it.19.Marketing specialists study ______.A.how to build shelves B.how to own supermarketsC.the colors of their products D.methods of selling more products20.According to the selection, children’s books are probably______.A.on higher shelves B.on low shelvesC.spread all over the store D.sold in supermarketsA.I will just take whatever is available.B.I am awfully sorry ,Mr. SimsC.I have a reservation.D.I do have a confirmed reservation.21.A good way to save money in a supermarket is to ______.A.go just before dinnerB.make a list of what you need before you goC.buy things that are in the prettiest packageD.walk around and see what you needIt is very important for us to realize the necessity for cooperation and coordination among the various hotel departments. Practically every service offered requires the efforts of two or more departments. To get an incoming guest from the lobby to his freshly cleaned room involves the Front Office, the uniformed services, and the Housekeeping Department. Whether it would be the serving of a single meal in the coffee shop or the handling of a large convention, the joint efforts of several departments must be coordinated to assure successful and satisfactory service to the customer. Failure on the part of any one department or any one person in that department means unsatisfactory service and a dissatisfied guest. For example, the hotel sales manager sells a local businessman a meeting room for a sales meeting and arranges for a luncheon in the coffee shop and an evening banquet in the convention hall. The sales manager makes the arrangements, but the actual setup of the rooms, the preparation and service of the meals, and the general decorative arrangements are handled by departments over which the sales manager has no control. Should anything prove unsatisfactory, however, the customer would hold the sales manager directly responsible.22.Every service offered in a hotel requires the efforts of ______.A.two departmentsB.more than two departmentsC.two or more departmentsD.more departments23.To get an incoming guest from the lobby to his room involves______.A.the Front Office and the uniformed servicesB.the Front Office, the uniformed services, and the Housekeeping Department C.several departmentsD.the Housekeeping Department only24.When the hotel sales manager sells a meeting room to a customer,______.A.he makes all the arrangementsB.the specific details are handled by other departments concernedC.he arranges for the setup of the roomsD.he also controls over the different departments concerned25.Should anything prove unsatisfactory, the customer would ______.A.complain to the general managerB.hold the sales manager directly responsibleC.hold the general manager responsibleD.refuse to pay his bill.二.判断题(每小题1分,共10分。

Almost all hotels provide signs that the guest can hang on the doorknob in either of these cases. Its origin is too old to be traced. Several explanations are hanging around. All agree, however, that the word Nian, which in modern Chinese solely means "year", was originally the name of a monster beast that started to prey on people the night before the beginning of a new year (Do not lose track here: we are talking about the new year in terms of the Chinese calendar). One legend goes that the beast Nian had a very big mouth that would swallow a great many people with one bite. People were very scared. One day, an old man came to their rescue, offering to subdue Nian. To Nian he said, "I hear that you are very capable, but can you swallow the other beasts of prey on earth instead of people who are by no means of your worthy opponents?" So, it did swallow many of the beasts of prey on earth that also harassed people and their domestic animals from time to time. After that, the old man disappeared riding the beast Nian. He turned out to be an immortal god. Now that Nian is gone and other beasts of prey are also scared into forests, people begin to enjoy their peaceful life. Before the old man left, he had told people to put up red paper decorations on their windows and doors at each year's end to scare away Nian in case it sneaked back again, because red is the color the beast feared the most. From then on, the tradition of observing the conquest of Nian is carried on from generation to generation. The term "Guo Nian", which may mean "Survive the Nian" becomes today "Celebrate the (New) Year" as the word "guo" in Chinese having both the meaning of "pass-over" and "observe". The custom of putting up red paper and firing fire-crackers to scare away Nian is still around. However, people today have long forgotten why they are doing all this, except that they feel the color and the sound add to the excitement of the celebration.11. The type of houses found in a certain part of the world depends to a certain extent on the building materials available there. Countries where stone is abundant tend to have more stone houses than a place where there is plenty of timber for example. However, climatic conditions affect the houses built to a greater extent. In equatorial countries like Singapore and Malaysia, two main factors are responsible for the type of houses built: the heat of the sun and the fierceness of rainstorms. Our houses are light and airy but have steep roofs. In some places, houses are built on stilts because they may be in lowlying areas which get flooded easily. In a hot and dry country such as Arabia, the houses are often box-shapeD. They 176have thick stone walls which are painted white. White surfaces radiate heat while dark surfaces absorb it. The houses have no windows, only gaps with shutters over them. Even the door openings are very small and narrow. It is cool inside such houses. The roofs are also flat, so that when the sun goes down, one can sit on the roof and catch any cool breeze that is blowing. Sometimes, a water tank may be placed on the roof to catch thelittle rain that falls. In cold regions, where there is heavy snow, the roofs, of the houses slope steeply so that the snow can slide off easily. If the roofs were flat, the snow would build up and the roofs might cave in under the weight. The houses also have thick stone walls so that the cold is kept out. Some countries are more likely to be affected by earthquakes. In such places, the houses are made of light building materials. If the houses collapse in an earthquake, few people will get hurt and less damage is caused. In some parts of the world, people take their homes along with them as they travel. These people are called nomads. The Bedouins of Arab lands wander over the desert, setting up tents wherever they stop to rest.26. Houses in equatorial countries _______.A. are light and airyB. have steep roofsC. are always built on stiltsD. are built to shelter from the harsh elements27. Houses in Arabia _______.A. have thin walls painted whiteB. are box-shapedC. have many windowsD. always have water tanks on the roof28. In cold countries roofs slope steeply ______.A. so that people can build caves under itB. so that the roofs won't become so heavyC. because people do not need snow to build the houseD. so that the snow can slide off easily29. In earthquake-affected countries, light building materialsare used because _____.A. people there can move more easilyB. the houses won't hurt people in an earthquakeC. less damage will be caused in an earthquakeD. people will not be affected by the earthquake30. Nomads are people who _____.A. live in tentsB. travel over the desertC. wander from place to placeD. set up tents over the desert177(3)The art of growing dwarf trees, or “bonsai”as their Japanese creators call them, is increasing in popularity in the Untied States. Growing bonsai can make a fascinating hobby for anyone who enjoys plants and creating beautiful effects with them; elaborate equipment is not required to grow these lovely and tiny trees, but time, patience, and a sense of natural beauty are. There are four important guidelines to follow in growing bonsai. First, one must be careful in choosing the type of tree. Not all species of trees can be made into bonsai, since the growing conditions are unusual. Varieties of pine with small needles and hardwood trunks are especially suitable.Second, one must be careful in choosing the size of the container the bonsai will be in. This is necessary because the major growth of bonsai is kept confined to the tree's trunk and leaves, not its root system——a process quite unlike what is done with other plants.Another thing the bonsai-grower must do is trim the rootsand branches of the tree periodically. Unless this is done, the plants will not have the proper proportions and will look unnatural. The Japanese ideal for bonsai is to have trees which are just like normal trees in everything but size. The last thing one most do is to be careful to keep the miniature trees well-watered. Because bonsai are grown in smaller-than-usual containers, they often need more water than ordinary houseplants do.As one can see from the above, the art of bonsai-growing is one which requires a certain amount of time and effort. The satisfactions that growing bonsai brings can be great, however. Imagine a stately pine tree, 100 years old, standing two feet high; imagine having such a tree in your living room and passing it down through several generations of your family. That is actually what bonsai-growing is all about: establishing a tradition of beauty which lasts for years and years and is a symbol of the beauties of the natural world.31. Bonsai are _____.A. extremely popular in the United StatesB. trees which have been made to grow in miniature formC. a kind of natural art form originating in the U.S.D. very beautiful but not very long-lasting32. Compared to other houseplants, bonsai often require _____ than one might expect.A. less lightB. more waterC. a large containerD. less care17833. What does the ideal bonsai look like?A. It has abnormally large leaves.B. It has an unusually thick trunk.C. It has many more branches.D. It is not mentioned in the passage.34.What is the implied meaning of “a certain amount of time and effort”(lastparagraph)?A. More time and effort than ordinary houseplants do.B. A lobby, elevator, or room that has not been maintained properly, that looks shabby, or that contains items requiring reqair creates a bad impression on the guest. And of course, inadequate air conditioning, poor heating, or improper plumbing will result in immediate complaints. The guest pays a substantial amount of money for accommodations and expects the equipment to function at least as well as it does at home. Therefore, the chief engineer and staff have an important role to fulfill in satisfying the guests' demands and thus helping to maintain the profit level for180the hotel. At the same time, the engineering department's cost must be properly monitored and controlled.87Often the large hotel corporation that builds the hotel doesnot actually operate, or run it. Some hotels are operated as special right, which means that the building corporation sells or rents to someone else the right to operate the hotel. The operator runs the hotel according to certain standards set by the corporation and pays a percentage of the income to the corporation. Other large hotels are run on management contracts. The builder agrees to let another company manage and operate the hotel. The builder and manager get a share of the money earned by the hotel. This is often how large hotels that are built by governments are run. Many other types of accommodations besides hotels are available to tourists. They are guest houses or tourist homes, which provide a “c ontinental breakfast”of coffee and rolls as well as sleeping accommodations.181参考答案I. 旅游英语期末考试卷带答案3套期末考试卷AB卷带答案习题试卷模拟卷Paper 1I. Reading Comprehension (2’*15=30’)Directions: After reading the three following passages, you will find 15 questions and make the correct choice to each question.Passage 1When Chinese and Western customs associated with dinner invitations are compared, it can easily be seen that there are many differences between the two cultures. This may easily result in problems and misunderstandings for Chinese and Westerners. From the Western point of view, there are the following difficulties associated with eating a Chinese meal. Firstly, Westerners may be unused to using chopsticks, and for reasons of hygiene they may feel uncomfortable at everyone eating out of a communal dish with their own chopsticks. Moreover, they may not know what to do with unwanted items such as bones. To keep them in their bowl or dish is impractical, yet to simply place them on the table seems impolite. But perhaps the biggest problem relates to the quantity of food. Most Westerners feel quite overwhelmed by the vast amount of food that is served. When the host continuously offers them more and more and often actually places it on their own dish, they may not know what to do. According to their Western custom, they should eat everything that is served. Yet the quantity is so great at a Chinese meal that this is almost impossible. Normally uneaten, and so may try to refuse the host’s offers. When this has little effect and they are still given more, they may feel they have no choicebut to eat it all. Indigestion is often the result! It is often helpful for Westerners if a Chinese host understands these differences. Placing serving spoons on the table and giving the guests their own spoon and fork (as well as chopsticks) is often appreciated, especially if a simple comment is made like “You can use your spoon if you prefer”. Then the Westerners can choose to use whichever they prefer. It is also helpful if the host does not plac e too much food on the guests’ plates and if they say they have had sufficient food, to accept their comments. T elling the guests where to put items such as bones may also be appreciated. From the Chinese point of view, it may seem that a Western host is not very hospitable. Much less food is provided than at a Chinese dinner, and it may seem that the host has taken relatively little trouble over preparing the meal. Moreover the host does not offer the food very often, and so may appear ungenerous. As a result of all this, Chinese guests may feel unwelcomed. However, this does not mean that Westerners do not really welcome their guests. Perhaps it is simply the differing importance of food in the two cultures that accounts for these differences.1. Which of the following is not the problem or misunderstanding that may occur when the Western guests have a meal with Chinese host together?A. the use of tablewareB. how to do with unwanted items such as bonesC. problem relates to the quantity of foodD. the number of people who have a meal together2. They can refuse the host’s offer or keep the uneaten in their bowl or dish.C. They can throw it away.D. They can place it on the table.3. Place serving spoons on the table and giving the guests their own spoon and fork (as well as chopsticks)B. place too much food on the guest s’ platesC. tell the guests where to put items such as bonesD. accept their comments if they say they have had sufficient food4. First, one must be careful in choos ing the type of tree. Not all species of trees can be made into bon sai, since the grow ing conditions are unusual. Varieties of pine with small needles and hardwood trunks are especially suitable.i Second, one must be careful in choos ing the size of the container the bon sai will be in. Thisis n ecessary because the major growth of bon sai is kept confined to the tree's trunk and leaves, not its root system--a process quite un like what is done with other pla nts.Another thing the bonsai-grower must do is trim the roots and branches of the treeperiodically. Paper 1I. When this has little effect and they are still given more, they may feel they have no choice but to eat it all. It is also helpful if the host does not place too much food on the guests’ plates and if they say they have had sufficient food, to accept their comments. Telling the guests where to put items such as bones may also be appreciated. You should be waiting at the airport to greet your tourists when the plane lands, take them to hotel, and make sure they settle in comfortably. There is some preparation work to do before receiving the group. You should be familiar with the schedule, call first and reconfirm when and where the group will arrive. Reading Comprehension:(20)Directions: Read the three following passages and then choose the best answer to each question.(1)Greenspace facilities are contributing to an important extent to the quality of the urban environment. Fortunately it is no longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject has to start with the proof of this idea. At present it is generally accepted, although more as self-evident statement than on the base of a closely-reasoned scientific proof. The recognition of the importance of greenspaces in the urban environment is a first step on the right way, this does not mean, however, that sufficient details are known about the functions of greenspace in towns and about the way in which the inhabitants are using these spaces. As to this rather complex subject I shall, within the scope of this lecture, enter into one aspect only namely the recreative function of greenspace facilities. The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation which for many years has been used in town-and-country planning, has in my opinion resulted in disproportionate attention for forms of recreation far from home, whereas there was relatively little attention for improvement of recreative possibilities in the direct neighborhood of the home. We have come to the conclusion that this is not right, because an important part of the time which we do not pass in sleeping or working, is used for activities at and around home. So it is obvious that recreation in the open air has to begin at the street-door of the house. The urban environment has to offer as many recreation activities as possible, and the design of these has to be such that more obligatory activities can also have a recreative aspect. The very best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to take a pleasant walk in the district, if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets, because the risks of traffic are too great, if during shopping you can nowhere find a spot for enjoying for a moment the nice weather, in short, if you only feel yourself at home after the street-door of your house is closed after you.21.According to the author, the importance of greenspaces in the urban environment _______.A. is still unknownB. is usually neglectedC. is being closely studiedD. has been fully recognized22.The theoretic separation of living, working, traffic and recreation has led to _______.A. the disproportion of recreation facilities in the neighborhoodB. the location of recreation facilities far from homeC. relatively little attention for recreative possibilitiesD. the improvement of recreative possibilities in the neighborhood23.The author suggests that the recreative possibilities of greenspace should be provided _______.A. in special areasB. in the suburbsC. in the neighborhood of the houseD. in gardens and parks24.According to the author, greenspace facilities should be designed in such a way that _______.A. more obligatory activities might take on a recreation aspect.B. more and more people might have access to themC. an increasing number of recreative activities might be developedD. recreative activities might be brought into our homes25.The main idea of the passage is that _______.A. better use of greenspace facilities should be made so as to improve the quality of our lifeB. attention must be directed to the improvement of recreative possibilitiesC. the urban environment is providing more recreation activities than it did many years agoD. priority must be given to the development of obligatory activities(2)The actual work of cleaning and caring for the guest room is performed by the room attendants. Their duties include recognizing the guests, introducing room facilities and service, making or changing beds, dusting furniture, sweeping or cleaning floors and carpets, washing bathrooms, replacing towels and washing clothes, making up room and doing turn-down service. They should also supply any personal service to satisfy the guests' reasonable demands, such as wake-up service, room service, laundry service, shoeshine service and baby-sitting service. Whenever and wherever possible, the staff should offer to do extra things for the guests. In addition, they are expected to check up rooms and report any signs of damage or wear and tear that may make repairs and maintenance necessary. Finally, to be competent hotel staffs, they should be capable of handling with unexpected emergency and try to minimize the damage or negative influence.Room attendants have an intimate contact with the guests. A guest may ask the attendants to make up his room at a certain time, or he may indicate he does not want tobe disturbed at all, or he would like to have meals in his room. Almost all hotels provide signs that the guest can hang on the doorknob in either of these cases. In addition, guests frequently ask room attendant for items that are supplied by the housekeeping department, such as irons, transformers, special pillows, extra hangers, cribs for infants and hair dryers. In some hotels, the room attendants pick up and deliver clothing for the laundry and valet service.Heavier chores are performed by men who are usually called housemen. Their work involves window-washing, shampooing carpets, polishing metals, removing and cleaning draperies, cleaning the public areas of the hotels, and many other tasks that might be beyond the physical capacities of women. The housemen also run errands for the housekeeping department, such as providing guests with extra things on request.26. heavy chores are performed by _______.A. housekeepersB. housemenC. room attendantsD. assistants27.The word “intimate" in the first line of the second paragraph means _______.A. close and familiarB. clearC. internalD. interesting28.The word “crib”in the phrase “cribs for infants”means _______.A. copyB. boneC. foodsD. a bed for new baby29. Four weeks' paid 45 a year had become almost universal in these countries 46 the late 1965s despite the 47 recession. More people can travel further and stay 48 ,or take two major holidays, often overseas, thus creating 49 in the nature and venues of international 50 .This applies also to 51 tourism but the greatest growth here has been in long 52 or a few days spent in short 53 from work activities. These short breaks are taken in 54 to the main international holiday. For the lower 55 groups, the improvement in domestic facilities has 56 more people to take short-break holiday 57 previously they may only have been 58 to take their annual holidays at 59 and just have one-or two-day excursions to obtain a much needed change from 60 circumstances.V. Translate the following passages into Chinese (10×2=20)(1)Increases in net discretionary incomes, especially of the younger age groups, and improved educational standards increased interest in foreign lands and cultures. So the demand for tourism increased. The occupation of the head of the household, resultant promotion and the increase in the number of wives going to work also affected the growth in demand. For example a person made a company director would strive to take family, or at least the spouse, on a winter holiday. They become a two-holiday-a-year family. A winter holiday in the Caribbean or Far East became a status symbol. A wife's net earnings increased the family income and its ability to buy more or better holidays. On the other hand, the life cycle of the family can have negative effects on demand.(2)As China's economy shifts to a more market system, the domestic travel industry will face increasing challenges in a more highly competitive environment. This will require domestic travel services to constantly study their market conditions, design travel products according to the needs and wants of tourists, and sell their travel products effectively to potential markets. A successful domestic tourism industry in China relies on two levels of coordination and operation. National and provincial governments need to monitor regional trends in domestic travel patterns and develop measures for guiding domestic travel growth. At the individual business level, domestic travel services need to implement systematic management practices and operations. China can only develop a successful domestic tourism industry if there is a well-coordinated effort between the government and the private travel industry.参考答案I. On November 17,1997,He Guangwei, director e of the National Tourism Administration(NTA), signed an agreement in Washington with Jonathan Linen, vice-chairman
of the American Express, designating the American Express Card as China''s tourist credit card
for 1998 to 2000. This is the second time the card has won this honor.
"Since the American Express Card was designated for the first time in 1994, it has played
an important role in China''s tourism," said Director He at the signing ceremony.
Over recent years, the number of tourists using the American Express Card to handle business, tourism and activities related to work in China has increased. According to Bank of
China statistics, the amount of business using American Express Cards occupies 45 percent of
the accounts signed with foreign credit cards. In addition, the number of accounts signed with the
card by overseas tourists stands at 15 percent of China''s tourist income in foreign exchange.
In order to develop China''s tourism, the American Express and the NTA carried out a
series of market promotion activities in North America, including distributing a million copies of
the 24-page World of Wonders -- Hong Kong and China in North America. The American Express has enthusiastically supported China''s tourism education and training. In 1992, in cooperation with the Beijing Tourism College, it established the tourism training center which
has successfully trained more than 600 tourism administrative personnel.
The new agreement marked the further strengthening of cooperation between the American Express and the NTA. It is also one of the important plans by both parties to boost the long-term development of China''s tourism. "The American company has a wide tourism network in China
and we are very honored to be able to make contributions to China''s tourism," said Linen.
At present, the company has four offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xiamen and
30 tourist service centers in 22 cities offering tour and credit card services, including reissuing
lost cards, reporting missing travel checks, consultation, settling of card accounts, handling customers'' post and other services.。
