It refers to the increasing integration of economies around the world, particularly through trade and financial flows. The term sometimes also refers to the movement of people(labor) and knowledge (technology) across international borders. There are also broader cultural, political and environmental dimensions of globalization that are not covered here.At its most basic, there is nothing mysterious about globalization. The term has come into common usage since the 1980s, reflecting technological advances that have made it easier and quicker to complete international transactions—both trade and financial flows. It refers to an extension beyond national borders of the same market forces that have operated for centuries at all levels of human economic activity-village markets, urban industries, or financial centers.Markets promote efficiency through competition and the division of labor-the specialization that allows people and economies to focus on what they do best. Global markets offer greater opportunity for people to tap into more and larger markets around the world. It means that they can have access to more capital flows, technology, cheaper imports, and larger export markets. But markets do not necessarily ensure that the benefits of increased efficiency are shared by all. Countries must be prepared to embrace the policies needed, and in the case of the poorest countries may need the support of the international community as they do so.()1. What are the benefits of globalization?A. increased efficiency of the market.国际商务英语等级考试(中级)试卷第5页(共10页)B. cheaper imports.C. larger markets.D. all of the above.()5. Countries must take active measures to embrace globalization.D. The benefits of increased efficiency will not be shared by all the countries.Passage Two1 Flexible working, often through a job share, is pushing its way up corporate agendas as a way to attract and retain staff in the unceasing ‘war for talent’. More than 90 percent of job shares are women, and most of them have childcare responsibilities. The industries keenest on job shares include banking and finance, IT and public services. A recent report from Incomes Data Services says the number of workers in job shares has doubled to about 200,000 in ten years. Management jobs are now being shared, whereas formerly only occupations such as nursing and secretarial work featured.2 Angela Baron, adviser (employee resources) at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, believes all jobs can be shared, up to the highest level. She says: “After all, hospital nurses and doctors make life-affecting decisions based on handed-over information. What is more important than that?3 Most employers who allow job shares like them. Staff are more motivated because they can work the hours that suit them. There is less absenteeism, staff working half-weeks are often fresher, and two workers on the same job can be more creative. Ms Baron says: “When there’s a tricky problem, you actually have two brains instead of one.” One disadvantage for employers is potential difficulty finding a replacement if a job-share partner leaves. Extra training and equipment may also be necessary.4 Workers like job sharing because it allows them to keep a firmer footing on the job ladder, when, for example, returning from maternity leave. There is, however, no blanket legal obligation on an employer to offer a job share or part-time working. If management opposes the creation of a job share, there may be no easy way to secure it. It is often easier in areas with a history of jobsharing. They are far more prevalent in the public sector, for example. If your company has a flexible working culture, you are more likely to achieve a job share. Most shares operate on a 50/50 basis, with one partner working from Monday to Wednesday and the other from Wednesday to Friday.5 The key to a successful job share is a compatible and trusting relationship with your partner, underpinned by a satisfactory contract. If you hoard and play power games with information, this sort of arrangement is unsuitable. Individuals need to be organized and good communicators. Sue Monk, chief executive of flexible workers’ charity Families at Work, and a job sharer herself, says: “You’ve got to be prepared to put in extra effort to make it work. For example, if you’re busy, you may need to put in a phone call in the evening. You have to be very responsible. It’s easy to leave things for someone else to do.”()6. Job sharing is ______.A. more common among men than womenB. a form of flexible workingC. not often found in the public sectorD. only found in hospitals()7. In Paragraph 2, the statement “Nurses and doctors make life-affecting decisions based on handed-over information.” means that they make decisions based on informationthat ______.A. they get from somewhere elseB. they get from each otherC. is out of dateD. is of no use()8. In Paragraph 3, the statement “Staff working half-weeks are often fresher.” means that the employees who only work half-weeks ______.A. have only just started in the companyB. are more enthusiasticC. are less tiredD. are motivated()9. In Paragraph 3, the statement“When there’s a tricky problem you actually have two brains instead of one.” means that ______.A. it’s easier for two people to solve problems than oneB. tricky problems can only be solved by two intelligent people国际商务英语等级考试(中级)试卷第7页(共10页)C. when someone has a tricky problem, they use twice their normal intelligence tosolve itD. those with two brains are more intelligent()10. About 40 per cent of thepopulation ’ s food and a largeproportion of国际商务英语等级考试(中级)试卷 第 9 页 (共 14 页)the raw materials used by industry have to be imported. In 1980 exports of goods andservices were equal to about 25 per cent of the Gross National Product. In the exports of manufactures, the UK, in recent years, has done less well than her major competitors. The UK ’s share of the value of the main manufacturing countries ’ exports fell from 16 percent in 1980 to about 9 per cent in 1999. This was due to the fact that the volume of UK exports increased at an annual average rate of 5 per cent, only about one-half the rate achieved by the main manufacturing countries as a whole and about one-third the rate for Japan.Changes in the commodity composition of exports have been very small in recent years. The share of manufactured goods has increased slightly while the share of basic materials has declined. There has been a steady decline in the share of textiles and an increase in the share of chemicals in total exports. Over the next decade the possibility of exporting North Sea Oil and the diminishing dependence on imported oil should have a beneficial effect on the UK ’s visible trade balance. The most striking change in the geographical distribution of UK exports in recent years has been the swing away from the 国际商务英语等级考试(中级)试卷第 10页(共14页)traditional Commonwealth markets and agrowing dependence on the market in Western Europe. Exports to Western Europe accounted for about 34 per cent of UK exports in 1989 but by 2000 this share had grown to nearly 60 per cent. This is much in line with developments in world trade as a whole, because trade between industrialized countries has been the fastest growing sector of world trade. The other important development is the growingimportance of the markets in the oil-exporting countries.()1. The supermarket chainscertainly hope so. ‘ Peopledon ’thave thetime to shop around any more. If they’rehappy with the quality of a company ’s service, then they’re likely to buy other product types from them as well,’says Jim Austin, anindustry analyst. With the major supermarket brands suchas Tesco, J Sainsbury and Asda already offering financial services, credit cards, own-label clothing, mobile phones, and cut-price electrical goods including computers, Austin believes that the supermarkets ’ diversification is set to continue.‘The UK retail food market is saturated,so their only real prospect of growth is either to enter foreign markets or diversify into new markets at home..’Tesco and J Sainsburyhave done both. Having already bought foreign subsidiaries, both large supermarket chainshave set up their own banks in order to offer customers financial services such as personal loans, mortgages and savings accounts.Together, the two new banks took over£2bn of customer deposits within the firstyear of trading. ‘They are winning businessby using a lower cost base to offer their国际商务英语等级考试(中级)试卷第 13页(共14页)customers better interest rates on savings than traditional banks, ’says Austin. However, there are question marks over long-term profitability. The traditional providers say there is bound to come a pointwhen the new banks will eventually want to widen margins and boost profits.‘When they start to raise prices, they might create bad publicity, which could hurt their brand,’says one observer. ‘How will a major supermarket react, for instance, when it is faced with having to repossess a regular shopper’s home?’Shoppers, however, do not share these fears. A recent survey of 1,000 people by brand consultants Cook & Pearson concludes that shoppers will continue to buy a wider range of goods and services from supermarkets. Many people said that they would be prepared to buy a supermarket own-label car or even a house from a supermarket-branded estate agent. Interest was also shown in combining a food shopping trip with a visit to a supermarket dentist.Loyalty schemes are another incentive for customers. ‘Most supermarkets now offer bonus points with every purchase. These points add up to free air miles or cash discounts, so it really pays to stay loyal to the brand in all its diversified forms, ’says Austin.国际商务英语等级考试(中级)试卷第 14页(共14页)()6 Why are the large UK supermarketchains diversifying? _____________.A.

The German company, a global leader in high-quality domestic appliances such as washing machines and vacuum cleaners, is renowned for its high manufacturing standards and its refusal to move down-market and compete on price.47Miele bases nearly all its manufacturing in high-cost Germany and is self-sufficient to a high degree. Rather than outsource to low-cost suppliers, it makes 4 million electric motors a year (enough for all its products) in its own plant near Cologne. Keeping the manufacturing base in the company’s own plant is, Miele believes, essential to maintaining its quality standards. Sales last year were €2.2 billion (£1.5 billion).48The approach is respected by Miele’s industry peers. Andrea Guerra, Chief Executive of Merloni, the Italian white goods maker, regards it as the icon of quality in the industry –‘with a fantastic position at the top end’.国际商务英语等级考试(中级)第6页(共11页)49The company sells appliances ranging from dishwashers to coffee machines, at a price premium of up to 70 percent over their competitors’products. It spends 12 percent of its revenue on product development – far more than the industry norm. Miele’s attention to detail is legendary. Ovens are tested using machines that open and shut their doors 60,000 times to simulate the use they will have in their owners’ kitchen.50The company also believes it can make its German plants more competitive by changes in working practices. According to Markus Miele, co-owner of the company, ‘We have a plant near Gutersloh that makes 50 percent of all the plastic parts we need. But we make this plant compete with outside contractors to see who gets the work for specific jobs. We make sure that the Miele plant charges prices no greater than the other bidders. This is one way we encourage our factories to make improvements in their production processes.’51Even though Miele’s manufacturing costs are higher than those of its competitors, the company says these are justified by its ability to produce appliances that – despite their high prices – people want to buy. Roughly 50 percent of Miele’s manufacturing costs come from components it makes itself compared with about 30 percent for equivalent companies. But, the company says, most Miele appliances will work for 20 years, which is longer than comparable products. This, it says, is linked to the reliability of individual parts.52The policy pays off, says Mr Miele. ‘My father (who was in overall charge of Miele until 2002) once had a letter from an old lady in Eastern Germany. She said she didn’t have much money but she was willing to pay 50 percent more for a Miele washing machine because she knew it would last for the rest of her life.’ Nick Platt, a home appliance specialist at GfK market research company, says such feelings are not uncommon. ‘The company has built up a tremendous loyalty among consumers who know that the brand stands for quality,’ hvee says.国际商务英语等级考试(中级)第7页(共11页)53Miele faces a tough few years as it strives not just to keep ahead of competitors at the top end of the white goods market but also to interest new generations of increasingly cost-conscious consumers in buying machines that – in terms of kitchens – are the equivalent of luxury Swiss watches.Questions 46 – 53 are based on the headings of the eight paragraphs. Within eight years he had built the business into a national company with 500,000 customers and sales of £300 million per year. The company was based in Manchester. A. grateful B. thankful C. appreciated D. obligedSection CPassage OneAs a manager, I rely a lot on e-mail; especially with two telecommuters on my staff. After seeing how e-mails have come back to haunt so many executives in court, I'm wondering what should one avoid e-mailing?I just read about a big Hollywood star who decided that he was going to seek a divorce from his spouse of 22 years. He didn't sit down to talk to her about this. He didn't even give her a call. Nope, he e-mailed her about it.Unfortunately, he's not the only one who has broken his vows through e-mail. Many of us have e-mailed someone over something that was far too important, far too nuanced, far too personal toe-mail. Below is a list of times not to hit send. For more, check out The Boss's Survival Guide by Rosner, Halcrow and Levins (McGraw Hill, 2000).Don't e-mail big stuff. Don't e-mail an announcement about a merger, acquisition, reorganization or downsizing. If it's a big deal then you need to tell your people face-to-face. Reading a major announcement in an e-mail isn't as bad as reading it for the first time in the newspaper, but it's close.Don't e-mail policy changes that will generate questions. Changes in sick leave or vacation time policies or benefits coverage will generate questions. As a general rule, anything that hits someone's wallet should be explained face-to-face.Stop e-mails that become a tennis match. We've all known e-mail debates that have volleyed back and forth more times than a tennis ball at Wimbledon. If an e-mail goes back and forth more than three times — and especially if the distribution list gets bigger — that's a sure sign that the discussion is bigger than e-mail. Call a halt and bring people together to resolve the issue.Don't put anything confidential in e-mail. That includes: Salaries, comments about performance, etc.Don't put anything in e-mail that you don't want to see in the newspaper or hear in court. Now that organizations as diverse as Microsoft and the White House have found their internal e-mail printed in newspapers and read in court, you know that even "private" e-mail is not really private. Nor can it be easily deleted.Which leads to the big issue — are you hiding behind your e-mail? Some managers rely one-mail in lieu of face-to-face conversation. It's especially tempting when people are off-site; such as telecommuters, vendors, or independent contractors. E-mail is more easily misinterpreted because it doesn't allow for give-and-take discussion and people aren't guided by facial expressions and vocal intonations. And the more dependent you are on e-mail, the more mysterious you become. Even theWizard of Oz learned that being the man behind the curtain only gets you so far. Go down the hall, hang out in the lunchroom, or pick up the phone at least some of the time.Follow these tips and what you are trying to say won't get divorced from the way that you say it.1. According to the passage, which of the following statements is not true?A. Even "private" e-mail is not really private.B. It refers to the increasing integration of economies around the world, particularly through trade and financial flows. The term sometimes also refers to the movement ofpeople (labor) and knowledge (technology) across international borders. It refers to an extension beyond national borders of the same market forces that have operated for centuries at all levels of human economic activity—village markets, urban industries, or financial centers.Markets promote efficiency through competition and the division of labor—the specialization that allows people and economies to focus on what they do best. Global markets offer greater opportunity for people to tap into more and larger markets around the world. It means that they can have access to more capital flows, technology, cheaper imports, and larger export markets. But markets do not necessarily ensure that the benefits of increased efficiency are shared by all. Countries must be prepared to embrace the policies needed, and in the case of the poorest countries may need the support of the international community as they do so.()6. Choos ing the wrong can didate may leave an orga ni sati on pay ing for years to come.Few companies will have escaped all of the following failures: people who panic at the first sight of stress; those with long impressive qualificati ons who seem in capable of lear ning; hypochondriacs whose absentee record becomes astonishing; and the unstable person later discovered to be a thief or worse.Less dramatic, but just as much a problem, is the pers on who simply does not come up to expectations, who does not quite deliver; who never becomes a high-flier or even a steady performer; the employee with a fine future behind them. The first point to bear in mind at the recruitment stage is that people don' change. Intelligence levels decline modestly, but change little over their working life. The same is true of abilities, such as lear ning Ian guages and han dli ng nu mbers. Most people like to think that personality can change, particularly the more negative features such as anxiety, low esteem, impulsiveness or a lack of emotional warmth. But data collected over 50 years gives a clear message: still stable after all these years. Extroverts become slightly less extroverted; the acutely shy appear a little less so, but the fun dame ntals rema in much the same. Personal crises can affect the way we cope with thin gs: we might take up or drop drink, drugs, religion or relaxation techniques, which can be have pretty dramatic effects. Skills can be improved, and new ones in troduced, but at rather differe nt rates. People can be groomed for a job. Just as politicia ns are carefully repackaged through dress, hairstyle and speech specialists, so people can be sent on training courses, diplomas or experime ntal weekends. But there is a cost to all this which may be more than the price of the course. Better to select for what you actually see rather tha n attempt to cha nge it.( )1. The purpose of this passage is to give man agers the advice that .A. Employers should select can didates for their pote ntial.B. Employers should select can didates for what they are rather tha n for their potential.C. Employers should select the newly graduated and send them on training courses, diplomas or experime ntal weeke nds.D. Employers should select experie need can didates to avoid spe nding thousa ndsof pounds in training.( )2. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true ? ____________ .A. Absolutely, People don 'tchange during their working lives.B. Gen erally, people cha nge to a large exte nt duri ng their worki ng lives.C. Fun dame ntally, people stay the same duri ng their work ing lives.D. Normally, people don 'tchange at all during their working lives.( )3. What does a fine future behind them (line 3 of paragraph 3) means? ____________ .A. Some people will certai nly have a promisi ng future though they are n ot verycompete nt in their prese nt work.B. Some people don 'have any potential for their work though they are employed.C. Some people can have a bright future though they can 'do their work well.D. Some people have potential when they are employed, but never realize that potential.( )4. According to the passage, people's basic abilities like Ianguage learning and numeracy ____________A. change little over their working life.B. n ever cha nge over their work ing life.C. cha nge fun dame ntally over their worki ng life.D. cha nge profo un dly over their work ing life.( )5. The word deliver (line 2 of paragraph 3) means ________________ .A. to take goods to the places or people they are addressed toB. to give a speechC. to do what you promised to doD. to help a woma n to give birth to a baby.Passage TwoAsia n econo mies will con ti nue to expa nd rapidly in the n ext two years on the back offoreig n in vestme nts, exports and domestic dema nd, but will not be free of worries, accord ing to a recent securities compa ny econo mic report. BEC中级听说读写,每一项各30分,总分120,达到总分的60%就算合格。

A,B,C为合格,D,E为不合格。

About 40 per cent of the population’s food and a large proportion of the raw materials used by industry have to be imported. In 1980 exports of goods and services were equal to about 25 per cent of the Gross National Product. In the exports of manufactures, the UK, in recent years, has done less well than her major competitors. The UK’s share of the value of the main manufacturing countries’ exports fell from 16 percent in 1980 to about 9 per cent in 1999. This was due to the fact that the7 / 17个人收集整理,勿做商业用途volume of UK exports increased at an annual average rate of 5 per cent, only about one-half the rate achieved by the main manufacturing countries as a whole and about one-third the rate for Japan.Changes in the commodity composition of exports have been very small in recent years. The share of manufactured goods has increased slightly while the share of basic materials has declined. There has been a steady decline in the share of textiles and an increase in the share of chemicals in total exports. Over the next decade the possibility of exporting North Sea Oil and the diminishing dependence on imported oil should have a beneficial effect on the UK’s visible trade balance. The most striking change in the geographical distribution of UK exports in recent years has been the swing away from the traditional Commonwealth markets and a growing dependence on the market in Western Europe. Exports to Western Europe accounted for about 34 per cent of UK exports in 1989 but by 2000 this share had grown to nearly 60 per cent. This is much in line with developments in world trade as a whole, because trade between industrialized countries has been the fastest growing sector of world trade. The other important development is the growing importance of the markets in the oil-exporting countries.()1. The export of manufactures of U.K. during recent years .A. has risen.B. has done better than the major competitors.C. has fallenD. has done less well that developing countries.()2. Which statement is not true?A. UK is exporting more to Western Europe.B. trade between UK and Western Europe has been the fastest growingsector of world trade.C. Are we gradually allowing an increasingly select number of large companies to take care of all our basic requirements? The supermarket chains certainly hope so. ‘People don’t have the time to shop around any more. If they’re happy with the quality of a company’s service, then they’re likely to buy other product types from them as well,’ says Jim Austin, an industry analyst. With the major supermarket brands such as Tesco, J Sainsbury and Asda already offering financial services, credit cards, own-label clothing, mobile phones, and cut-price electrical goods including computers, Austin believes that the supermarkets’ diversification is set to continue.‘The UK retail food market is saturated, so their only real prospect of growth is either to enter foreign markets or diversify into new markets at home..’ Tesco and J Sainsbury have done both. Having already bought foreign subsidiaries, both large supermarket chains have set up their own banks in order to offer customers financial services such as personal loans,9 / 17个人收集整理,勿做商业用途mortgages and savings accounts.Together, the two new banks took over £2bn of customer deposits within the first year of trading. ‘They are winning business by using a lower cost base to offer their customers better interest rates on savings than traditional banks,’ says Austin. However, there are question marks over long-term profitability. The traditional providers say there is bound to come a point when the new banks will eventually want to widen margins and boost profits. ‘When they start to raise prices, they might create bad publicity, which could hurt their brand,’ says one observer. These points add up to free air miles or cash discounts, so it really pays to stay loyal to the brand in all its diversified forms,’ says Austin.()6 Why are the large UK supermarket chains diversifying? _____________.A. Because the retail food market in the UK has been occupied byforeign companies.B. Because the retail food market in the UK is saturated.C. Because the retail food market in the UK is quite small.D. Because diversification into new markets can promote the growthof the retail food market in the UK.()7 How are the supermarkets able to attract business in the banking sector?____________.A.
