从它选用的语言材料和表达手段来看,它具有很强的专业性、实用性和规范性。
除了多用专业性强、准确度高的术语和行业习语外,它最为突出的一个特点就是行文用字高度程式化,往往为顺应“实用”要求而不避章法雷同,不求形式变化,常用一些商界共同遵循的固定套语,在书信的起、承、转、合之处按常式因事布词、行文构句,“尺牍”味浓,符合行业规范。
程式化特征在外贸函电中几乎随处可见,不少情况下,译者往往只需将想要表达的内容往一些相沿成习的套语和固定程式上一套,即可成文,这样做非但不显生硬,反倒更合行情,更能适应商务交往的特殊要求,行内人一看就明白,可免去许多不必要的麻烦和周折,有利于行业内的业务交往。
因此,熟知外贸函电的这种程式化特征往往对外贸函电翻译和写作起到事半功倍的作用。
这里,不妨探讨一下这些特征的具体表现形式和规律。
1行文用字“尺犊”化汉语商业信函用语原本就从旧体公文演变而来,文体上属我国传统实用文体“尺牍”一类,早一套依循我国“尺牍”行文规范而沿用下来的“尺牍”用语。
而源于19世纪英国海外贸易信函文体的现代英语商业信函素来就以措辞委婉、格式得体、讲究礼节而著称,在其后百多年的语言实践中同样形成了一套类似汉语“尺牍”用语的信函程式化套语,在其行文措辞、结构章法、语体格式,甚至标点符号的使用上都有自己的套路可循。
英语外贸函电写作5C 原则(也有3C、8C之说)就是这方面的具体体现之一,它考虑了外贸商务交往的各种状况和情景,成为了书信来往约定俗成的原则。
外贸函电行文“尺牍”化特征主要表现在信文的起承转合处使用一些固定的套式和用语,汉、英语已基本成搭配,翻译时无需多想,只须套用,行文布局自成套路。

商务信函的翻译对于商业信函,由于外贸商务活动交际需要的客观性和交际规约的必然性决定了外贸函电用语的特殊性,因而要求它在行文用字、句式章法上必须符合本行业的规范和专业特征,符合公文的形式。
从它选用的语言材料和表达手段来看,它具有很强的专业性、实用性和规范性。
除了多用专业性强、准确度高的术语和行业习语外,它最为突出的一个特点就是行文用字高度程式化,往往为顺应“实用”要求而不避章法雷同,不求形式变化,常用一些商界共同遵循的固定套语,在书信的起、承、转、合之处按常式因事布词、行文构句,“尺牍”味浓,符合行业规范。
程式化特征在外贸函电中几乎随处可见,不少情况下,译者往往只需将想要表达的内容往一些相沿成习的套语和固定程式上一套,即可成文,这样做非但不显生硬,反倒更合行情,更能适应商务交往的特殊要求,行内人一看就明白,可免去许多不必要的麻烦和周折,有利于行业内的业务交往。
因此,熟知外贸函电的这种程式化特征往往对外贸函电翻译和写作起到事半功倍的作用。
这里,不妨探讨一下这些特征的具体表现形式和规律。
1行文用字“尺犊”化汉语商业信函用语原本就从旧体公文演变而来,文体上属我国传统实用文体“尺牍”一类,早一套依循我国“尺牍”行文规范而沿用下来的“尺牍”用语。
而源于19世纪英国海外贸易信函文体的现代英语商业信函素来就以措辞委婉、格式得体、讲究礼节而著称,在其后百多年的语言实践中同样形成了一套类似汉语“尺牍”用语的信函程式化套语,在其行文措辞、结构章法、语体格式,甚至标点符号的使用上都有自己的套路可循。
英语外贸函电写作5C 原则(也有3C、8C之说)就是这方面的具体体现之一,它考虑了外贸商务交往的各种状况和情景,成为了书信来往约定俗成的原则。
外贸函电行文“尺牍”化特征主要表现在信文的起承转合处使用一些固定的套式和用语,汉、英语已基本成搭配,翻译时无需多想,只须套用,行文布局自成套路。

当然,这些套语现正日趋口语化,如:We have received your letter of…2)期请:如蒙……,将不胜感激例2.We should be grateful/obliged/thankful if you should get for us some information aboutthis company·如蒙贵公司向我方提供该公司情况,将不胜感激。
这是外贸函电中最常见的客套语之一,明为感激,实表期请,暗含英语中“please”一词的意图。
另外,英语划线部分还可用其他的词稍作句型变化予以表达(注意句中“it”的位置变化):It would be appreciated if you should get for us some information about this company.We should appreciate it if you should get for us some information about this company.3)“请告之”与“谨告之”例3.请告之你方具体要求,以便我方另寄目录和报价表。
Please let us know your specific requirements in order for us to send you by separate mail ourcatalogue and quotation.例4.谨告之装船单证正本正通过中国银行寄送你方。
Please be advised that the originals of shipping documents are being sent to you through theBank of China.例3是“告之于我”,例4则是“告之于人”,不可混用。
“告之”除译文中“advise "一词外,英语还可用“inform”代替它(“inform sb. of sth.”或“inform that...”),或用“Please notethat...”和“Please see(to it)that...”句型来表达。
4)告示:“详见附表”“随函附寄……请查收”等例5.我方经营多种轻工产品,详见附表。
We deal in a wide range of light industrial products as per list enclosed." as per”的本意相当于“according to”,是“按照”的意思,但文体上属古旧书面用语,用于英语公函,相对“according to”而言,显得尺牍味要浓一些。
当然,“详见附表”英语似乎还有其他习惯表达:For particularspleaserefer tothe list attached.尽管这也是固定的套语,但在商贸英语中却不及“as per”简洁。
Details as per the attached list.除“as per”外,商贸英语中还有几个相应的小词如”per”“ex”“via”需特别引起注意:(1)perPlease reply per return post.请即复。
“per”在这里等于" through”(通过)。
和“as per”一样,“per”也是一个古旧书面用语,通常情况下,意义与”each”相同,但用法上略有出入:This material sells at US$…per metric ton CIF.此物售价为到岸价每公吨……美元。
This goods sells at RMB.. . one jin each.此物售价为……元(人民币)一斤。
但在不同的上下文中,它的意义又有不同:We advise that the goods under the Contract No. 456 have been shipped per S.S. Peace.兹告之,合同456号项下货物已由和平轮装出。
在这里,“per”等于“on board”。
(2)exPlease be advised that the goods ex S.S. Peace have arrived in good condition.兹告之,和平轮装来货已达,情况良好。
The goods ex S.S. Peace have been inspected.由和平轮卸下货物已验讫。
“x x货轮”在英语中常用缩写“S. S.”(Steamship)或“M/V"(Motor Vessel)来表达,并且大、小写均可。
另外,“ex”功能上相当于" per”,但意义却有出入:“ex”表“由……轮装来”“由……轮卸下”,而“per”却表“由……轮装出”,也就是说,前者表“进”(in),后者表“出”(out)。
并且,在经贸用语中与不同的词搭配,“ex”的意义又有变化:The price is$150 per ton ex warehouse New York.价格为纽约仓库交货每吨150美元。
The goods ex stock are available.可供现货。
(3)viavia可表“途径”“凭借”“经由”等意思,相当于英语的复合介词"by way of",表方式或手段。
例如:The goods will be shipped via Hong Kong.货经由香港转运。
The samples were sent via airmail.样品已由空邮发出。
当然,此句中"via"同样可以使用介词”by”,构成固定表达"by mail/post”的变体。
例6.随函附寄我方价目单一式两份,请查收。
Enclosed please find two copies of our price list.基本句型:“Please find two copies... enc losed"。
类似的英语表达还有:Please find enclosed two copies of...Enclosed are two copies of…We are sending you under cover two copies of...最后一句形式略有不同,"under cover"表达了“随函”的意思,若改用“under separatecover" "by separate mail"或"by separate post"等套语,则是“另函’,之意了。
还有更接近日常表达的方式:现随函附寄我方最新目录和价格表,上有贵方所需行情。
We enclose our latest catalogue and a pricelist giving details you ask for.尽管汉、英语“尺牍”用语有很多类似之处,但由于这两种语言本身的差异(当然还包括文体规约和文化上的差异),各自的行文用字也有不尽相同的地方,不见得英语的“尺牍”用语在汉语中就能找到相应的形式,或反之亦然。
