A geological phenomenon, the Stone Forest was a vast expanse of sea during the Paleozoic era——some 270 million years ago. Later, the movement of tectonic plates altered the earth’s crust, causing the sea to recede and its limestone bottom to appear, thereby forming land.Due to the constant seeping ofrain through the cracks in the limestone, some of the stone formation dissolved and the fissures broadened, producing a group of great sculptures of different shapes, all molded by nature. In the midst of the forest, there is a huge rock screen on which two words——Stone Forest——are engraved in official script . Among the scenic sights is the "Sword Peak Pond" with jadeite-colored water so clear that one can see the bottom of the pond. Other astonishing sights include "Figure of Ashima," "Shi Ba Xiang Song" , and "Lotus Peak."The splendor of the Stone Forest is enhanced by the localcustoms of the native Sani people . Sani people are industrious and hospitable——and unconstrained. Sani women are expert at spinning, weaving, and embroidering. They like to wear rainbow-colored headgear and bright-colored dresses. The young people especially are very good singers and dancers. Every day at sunset, under the moonlight, boys and girls gather at the village platform. While the boys play the three-stringed plucked instruments, the girls clap their hands and dance the strong-rhythmed traditional "A’Xi Dance in the Moon" with great enthusiasm. If you happen to witness the event, you will be invited to join in the festivity.Note that every lunar year, on June 24th, the Sani people celebrate their national festival——the Torch Festival. On that day, the entire Stone Forest is permeated with a celebratory atmosphere. There are traditional performances of wreestling and bull-fighting. Finally, when the land is enveloped in the curtain of night, the young men run after the young women to propose marriage in the light of colored lanterns. 3Emei Mountain is one of the four famous mountains of Chinese Buddhism. Perhaps Mr. Yu is just disappointed at the foot of the mountain and the strike, but perhaps he did not expect, a group of bustling mountain "insects", even sitting on the hill is not willing to. Do not know if Mr. Yu had been Emei, if he saw Emei this scene, probably more disappointed than the Qingcheng Hill it.Before long, we were a pedestrian was a man coaxed to a hotel stay. On the four wonders of all kinds of fantasy, suddenly was a pot of cold water to head out - live footers, destined with the four wonders missed. No way: both to come, then the security of the.The next day, boarded the Golden Summit, did not see the sunrise and sea of clouds, expected. The Wall climbs up and down, twists and turns along the ridges of the Yanshan and Yinshan Mountain Chains through five provinces--Liaoning, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Gansu--and two autonomous regions--Ningxia and Inner Mongolia, binding the northern China together.Historical records trace the construction of the origin of the Wall to defensive fortification back to the year 656 B.C. during the reign of King Cheng of the States of Chu. Its construction continued throughout the Warring States period in the fifth Century B.C. when ducal states Yan, Zhao, Wei, and Qin werefrequently plundered by the nomadic peoples living north of the Yinshan and Yanshan mountain ranges. Walls, then, were built separately by these ducal states to ward off such harassments. Later in 221 B.C., when Qin conquered the other states and unified China, Emperor Qinshihuang ordered the connection of these individual walls and further extensions to form the basis of the present great wall. As a matter of fact, a separate outer wall was constructed north of the Yinshan range in the Han Dynasty(206 BC--1644 BC.), which went to ruin through years of neglect. In the many intervening centuries, succeeding dynasties rebuilt parts of the Wall. The most extensive reinforcements and renovations were carried out in the Ming Dynasty (1368--1644) when altogether 18 lengthy stretches were reinforced with bricks and rocks. it is mostly the Ming Dynasty Wall that visitors see today. The Great Wall is divided into two sections, the east and west, with Shanxi Province as the dividing line. The west part is a rammed earth construction, about 5.3 meters high on average. In the eastern part, the core of the Wall is rammed earth as well, but the outer shell is reinforced with bricks and rocks. The most imposing and best preserved sections of the Great Wall are at Badaling and Mutianyu, not far from Beijing and both are open to visitors. The Wall of those sections is 7.8 meters high and 6.5 meters wide at its base, narrowing to 5.8 meters on the ramparts, wide enough for five horses to gallop abreast. There are ramparts, embrasures, peep-holes and apertures for archers on the top, besides gutters with gargoyles to drain rain-water off the parapet walk. Two-storied watch-towers are built at approximately 400-meters internals. The top stories of the watch-tower weredesigned for observing enemy movements, while the first was used for storing grain, fodder, military equipment and gunpowder as well as for quartering garrison soldiers. The highest watch-tower at Badaling standing on a hill-top, is reached only after a steep climb, like "climbing a ladder to heaven". The view from the top is rewarding, hoverer. The Wall follows the contour of mountains that rise one behind the other until they finally fade and merge with distant haze.A signal system formerly existed that served to communicate military information to the dynastic capital. This consisted of beacon towers on the Wall itself and on mountain tops within sight of the Wall. At the approach of enemy troops, smoke signals gave the alarm from the beacon towers in the daytime and bonfire did this at night. Emergency signals could be relayed to the capital from distant places within a few hour long before the invention of anything like modern communications. There stand 14 major passes (Guan, in Chinese) at places of strategic importance along the Great Wall, the most important being Shanghaiguan and Jiayuguan. Yet the most impressive one is Juyongguan, about 50 kilometers northwest of Beijing.Known as "Tian Xia Di YI Guan" (The First Pass Under Heaven), Shanghaiguan Pass is situated between two sheer cliffs forming a neck connecting north China with the northeast. It had been, therefore, a key junction contested by all strategists and many famous battles were fought here. It was the gate of Shanghaiguan that the Ming general Wu Sangui opened to the Manchu army to suppress the peasant rebellion led by Li Zicheng and so surrendered the whole Ming empire to the Manchus, leading to the foundation of the Qing Dynasty. (1644-1911) Jiayuguan Pass was not so much as the "Strategic pass Underthe Heaven" as an important communication center in Chinese history. Cleft between the snow-capped Qilian Mountains and the rolling Mazong Mountains, it was on the ancient Silk Road. Zhang Qian, the first envoy of Emperor Wu Di of the Western Han dynasty (206 B.C-24 A.D), crossed it on his journey to the western regions. Later, silk flowed to the west through this pass too. The gate-tower of Jiayuguan is an attractive building of excellent workmanship. It has an inner city and an outer city, the former square in shape and surrounded by a wall 11.7 meters high and 730 meters in circumference. It has two gates, an eastern one and a western one. On each gate sits a tower facing each other. the four corners of the wall are occupied by four watch towers, one for each.Juyongguan, a gateway to ancient Beijing from Inner Mongolia, was built in a 15-kilometer long ravine flanked by mountains. The cavalrymen of Genghis Khan swept through it in the 13th century. At the center of the pass is a white marble platform named the Cloud terrace, which was called the Crossing-Street Dagoba, since its narrow arch spanned the main street of the pass and on the top of the terrace there used to be three stone dagobas, built in the Yuan Daynasty(1206-1368). At the bottom of the terrace is a half-octagonal arch gateway, interesting for its wealth of detail: it is decorated with splendid images of Buddha and four celestial guardians carved on the walls. The vividness of their expressions is matched by the exquisite workmanship. such grandiose relics works, with several stones pieced together, are rarely seen in ancient Chinese carving. The gate jambs bear a multi-lingual Buddhist sutra, carved some 600 years ago in Sanskrit, Tibetan, Mongolian, Uigur, Han Chinese and the language of Western Xia. Undoubtedly, they arevaluable to the study of Buddhism and ancient languages. As a cultural heritage, the Wall belongs not only to China but to the world. The Venice charter says: "Historical and cultural architecture not only includes the individual architectural works, but also the urban or rural environment that witnessed certain civilizations, significant social developments or historical events." The Great Wall is the largest of such historical and cultural architecture, and that is why it continues to be so attractive to people all over the world. In 1987, the Wall was listed by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site.。

1Dear Katie,Hi! How are you? I'm so excited to tell you all about the amazing place my family and I went for our vacation last month. Get ready for an awesome adventure! We went to this huge park called Yellowstone National Park. It's located way out west in the states of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. Just getting there was an adventure since we had to drive for almost two entire days from our house! But it was totally worth it when we finally arrived.Yellowstone is one of the coolest places I've ever been. It's absolutely massive - bigger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined! And get this - it sits on top of a huge volcano called a supervolcano. That means if it ever erupted, it would cause destruction across the entire country. Scary, right? But don't worry, the rangers told us it's been dormant for over 600,000 years so it's really safe. Phew!Speaking of volcanoes, that's what makes Yellowstone so amazing - all the geysers, hot springs, and mud pots caused by underground heat and pressure. We saw the most famous one called Old Faithful. It's this giant geyser that shoots blazing hot water way up into the sky every 90 minutes or so. The first time we watched it erupt, I couldn't believe my eyes! All that steaming hot water just exploding out of the ground. It was unreal. My favorite spot was definitely the Grand Prismatic Spring though. It's this huge hot spring, bigger than a football field, with the most incredible colors imaginable. Bright reds, oranges, yellows and greens all blending together in the water, caused by different types of bacteria. The rangers said the bacteria actually thrive in the searingly hot temperatures. How crazy is that? From far away, it looked almost like someone had spilled a giant rainbow in the ground. We took about a million pictures of it because it was just so beautiful and unreal.Everywhere you look in Yellowstone, there are these littleoga boiling mud pots and smelly sulfur vents. My dad thought it was hilarious every time we passed one with a rotten egg smell. He would do these exaggerated gags and pretend to pass out on the ground. Such a dork! We also saw tons of other geysers erupting, sending water shooting high into the air seemingly outof nowhere. The geysers are totally irregular, so you never know when one is going to go off. That's what makes it so exciting! As amazing as all the thermal stuff was, my absolute favorite part of the trip was seeing all the incredible wildlife. We were lucky enough to spot massive bison just wandering across the roads and grassy fields. They looked like prehistoric beasts! One even walked right up to our car and started licking the side window. I thought for sure he was going to ram us with those huge horns. Mom wasn't too thrilled about that close encounter! We also saw dozens of elk with their massive antlers. At one point, we witnessed two male elk battling it out, ramming their antlers together and bellowing these crazy loud screams. Their antlers were locked together and everything! My little brother was absolutely entranced watching them duke it out.And get this - we actually spotted a grizzly bear with her two cubs! They were way off in the distance, but we could still see them with our binoculars. A park ranger was there to make sure we kept a very safe distance since momma grizzly can be super protective and aggressive if she feels her babies are threatened. Still, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see those magnificent creatures in the wild like that.Beyond all the amazing wildlife, there was just so much breathtaking scenery everywhere you looked. Huge mountains, deep canyons, cascading waterfalls, vast forests - it was like something out of a movie. My favorite was the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone with its powerful roaring waterfalls and gorgeous colored cliffs. I've never seen anything quite so dramatic! We also got to go on a horseback riding tour through part of the park. I was a little nervous since I had never ridden a horse before, but our guides were super nice and made sure we were safe. We rode up and down all these hills and mountains, through wide-open meadows filled with wildlife. It felt like we had traveled back in time and were exploring the Wild West!As awesome as the daytime was, Yellowstone was even more magical at night. The stars out there are unbelievable since there is zero light pollution. We could see about a million times more stars than we can at home. It was so peaceful and serene just sitting outside our cabin, roasting marshmallows on the fire pit and gazing up at the incredibly bright Milky Way stretched across the sky. An experience I'll never forget!I seriously could go on and on about all the amazing things we did and saw at Yellowstone. From the powerful waterfalls to the bubbling mud pots to the herds of massive bison, it was likeno other place on earth. I really hope I get to go back again someday. And you HAVE to convince your parents to take you there too! You'd absolutely love it.I'll try to send you some of the pictures once Mom gets them uploaded. But no picture can really do this place justice. You'll just have to see it for yourself to truly understand what an awesome, unique, and beautiful place Yellowstone is.Well, I've rambled on long enough. I miss you and can't wait to see you this summer to tell you even more stories from our adventures! Say hi to your family for me.Your friend,[Your name]篇2Dear Billy,How are you? I'm so excited to tell you all about the awesome place my family and I visited over spring break! We went to this really cool city called San Diego in California. It's right near the Pacific Ocean and the border with Mexico. There was so much fun stuff to do and see there - I don't even know where to start!First off, we went to these amazing museums in a big park called Balboa Park. There was a museum all about different kinds of aircraft and space travel called the Air and Space Museum. They had a whole bunch of real airplanes and spaceships on display, including an actual Apollo spacecraft that went to the moon! Can you believe that? We got to go inside and see what it was like for the astronauts. It was so cramped in there, I can't imagine spending days cooped up in that tiny space. They also had flight simulators where you could pretend to pilot different planes. I got to virtually fly an F-16 fighter jet and perform all kinds of stunts and maneuvers. It was a blast, even though I crashed it into a virtual mountain at the end! Oops...The best museum though was definitely the Natural History Museum. They had the most wicked dinosaur exhibits with full skeletons of T-Rexes, Triceratops, Velociraptors and other crazy prehistoric creatures. My mind was blown by how gigantic some of those dinos were - the T-Rex skeleton felt like it was staring right at me! They had a whole section on dinosaurs that lived in the ocean too with books and models showing what they may have looked like. I also loved the Dinosaur 4-D movie we watched that made you feel like you were really there. When theT-Rex roared, the whole room would shake from the sound. So awesome!Speaking of awesome experiences, we also went to this place called LEGOLAND that was basically a gigantic playground and amusement park, but everything was made out of LEGOs! They had roller coasters, a giant LEGO castle, and all sorts of LEGO characters walking around that we could take pictures with. My favorite part was MINILAND though - it was like an entire city in miniature made from millions of LEGO bricks! They recreated famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, the Statue of Liberty, and even the Las Vegas strip all out of LEGOs. It was so detailed and realistic, you could spend hours just staring at it all.We also checked out the beach in San Diego which was beautiful. The water was a little chilly but we still went swimming and body surfing in the waves which was a blast. We saw pelicans and seagulls soaring overhead and walked along the shoreline looking for cool seashells. I even buried Dad in the sand when he wasn't looking - you should have seen the look on his face when he emerged as just a head sticking out of the beach! The most fun though was going to the amazing San Diego Zoo. It's one of the biggest and best zoos in the entire world! We saw pandas, polar bears, gorillas, lions, giraffes, elephants, tigers, zebras - pretty much any animal you can imagine. My favorite was definitely the koala bears though. They were just the cutest, sleepiest little things lazing about and munching on eucalyptus leaves. I could have watched them all day!The zoo had so many different habitats too like the Arctic area, the rainforest, desert, and even an Australia section with kangaroos just hopping around freely. We saw leopards, jaguars, and other big cats prowling up close at the Tiger Trail habitat. We even got to pet and brush some of the smaller animals like the deer, sheep, and goats at the children's petting zoo area.At the end of each day, we'd go back to our hotel and swim in the big pool there. The hotel had a waterslide too which was a total blast. We'd order room service and pig out on fries and milkshakes before crashing for the night. It was such an exhausting trip, but in the best way possible!I had so much fun in San Diego, Billy. There was seriously something new and exciting to do every single day that we were there. The museums, the LEGO park, the beach, and especially the amazing zoo...I'll never forget all of it! I wish you could havecome along too. Maybe you can come visit my family the next time we take a trip somewhere cool like that?Your friend,[Your name]篇3Dear Tommy,How are you? I'm writing to tell you all about the super cool place I visited with my family last weekend. It was this huge aquarium called the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta and it was amazing! You would love it since you're obsessed with sharks and other sea creatures. The aquarium is gigantic - it's one of the largest in the whole world! It has thousands of different animals like whales, dolphins, rays, sea lions and more fishy friends than you can imagine. My mind was blown by how many tanks and exhibits they had. It's like being underwater without getting wet!The coolest part by far was the Ocean Voyager exhibit. This is where they have the massive whale shark that is bigger than a school bus! Can you believe a fish that enormously huge exists?? It was swimming right above my head and I felt so tiny lookingup at it. The whale shark is joined by thousands of other fish like manta rays, sawfish, and more sharks circling around in this gigantic tank that holds 6.3 million gallons of water. That's more water than you can fit in a million bathtubs! They had this really neat acrylic tunnel where you can walk underneath and see the sea life swimming above and around you. It's like being inside their underwater home. I pressed my face up to the tunnel and saw sharks, rays, and huge groupers just gliding past. A grouper is this humongous ugly fish with a mouth so big it could swallow my entire body in one bite! Good thing they're well-fed at the aquarium.Another amazing exhibit is the Ocean Explorer gallery which has the largest window to view ocean animals in the whole world. This window is as tall as a 5-story building! You can see bonnethead sharks, zebra sharks, sawfish, and more creatures native to the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. I saw a tank full of scary looking sawfish with these long noses that kind of look like saws used for cutting wood. They use them to stun their prey before gobbling it up!One of my other favorite things was walking through the aquarium's Christmas tunnel filled with festive decorations and thousands of funky looking fish. There were tons of funnyshaped fish like the spiny pufferfish, clown triggerfish, and sui sui batfish. Have you ever seen a batfish? They look hilarious waddling around on their arm-like fins on the bottom of the tank.I had to do a double-take thinking they were little underwater Santas! My brain got a workout learning about all the amazing conservation efforts the aquarium does to protect endangered species and ocean habitats around the globe. They have special tanks to help breed and rehab injured animals before releasing them back into the wild. I saw tiny baby sea horses, lion fish, goliath groupers, and more in these nurseries. The cutest were the baby African penguin chicks - they looked like fluffy tennis balls waddling around! The aquarium also has entire sections devoted to Rivers of the World showcasing species from places like The Amazon River, India, and other parts of Asia. I even touched bamboo sharks, bonnethead sharks, and shrimp in their petting pools! Their fins felt so rough and scratchy. There were also tons of cool reptiles like alligators, frogs, and snakes in this section too.Overall, the Georgia Aquarium was an unbelievable experience I'll never forget. We spent over 8 hours there and I still don't think I saw everything. You have to come visit mesometime so we can go back! Let me know if you want me to bring back any stuffed animal souvenirs for you from the gift shop. I'm sure they'll have an adorable whale shark you'll go bananas over.Write back soon!Your friend,[Your name]篇4Dear Best Friend Tommy,How are you? I'm writing to tell you about the super cool place I visited last weekend with my family. It was this huge park called Yellowstone National Park and it's wayyyy out in the middle of nowhere in the state of Wyoming. But don't worry, even though it's in the wilderness there were still lots of people, hotels, and restaurants around. The first day we went, we saw this gigantic waterfall called the Lower Falls. It was taller than a hundred people stacked on top of each other! The water was crashing down with so much force that we could feel the mist hitting our faces from super faraway. The whole area around the falls was really pretty with bright green trees and bushes everywhere. After the waterfall, we went to check out these really stinky hot springs. They were these big pools of super hot water that smelled like rotten eggs because of all the sulfur and other smelly minerals dissolved in the water. Some of the pools were bright blue or orange which was really weird and neat at the same time. Our tour guide said the bright colors were caused by bacteria that can survive in the extremely hot temperatures. I don't know if I'd want to swim in bacteria water though, yuck! The next day, we saw even cooler stuff - geysers!! A geyser is like a hot spring, except that instead of just being a pool of hot water, they actually shoot scalding hot water wayyyy up into the air every few hours. We saw the most famous geyser in the whole park called Old Faithful. About every 90 minutes, Old Faithful would start rumbling and then FWOOOOSH a massive stream of boiling hot water would burst up like 180 feet into the sky! It was so awesome. While we were waiting for Old Faithful to erupt again, we walked around the area and saw all these other smaller geysers going off too. There were pools of bubbling mud that would occasionally burp and fling mud several feet into the air. Therewere also some fumaroles which were like geysers but they shoot out clouds of steam instead of water. The whole place smelled like rotten eggs from all the sulfur but it was still really cool. One of the most fun parts of Yellowstone though was seeing the wildlife. We were driving along the road one day and we had to stop because a massive hulk of a bison was just chillin' in the middle of the road! The park ranger said bison are pretty chill but you're not supposed to get too close because they can get cranky and charge you. We also saw a bunch of elk grazing in the fields and even a bear way篇5Dear Billy,Hi! How are you? I'm writing to tell you all about the super cool place I visited last weekend with my family. It's called the Museum of Science and you would love it!We drove for about an hour from our house to get to the big city where the museum is. When we got there, I could see it was huuuuge - like five pyramid buildings put together! The outside is made of rainbows of colored glass and shines so bright in the sun. My dad said a famous architect designed it to look like that.First we went into the lobby area and there were already some fun things to see and do. There were these giant levers you could pull to make these big metal balls swing back and forth on cables attached to the ceiling. My little brother got bonked on the head by one of the balls because he wasn't watching where he was going! There were also some optical illusion displays that made things look upside down or backwards. Trippy! The first exhibit we went to was all about the human body. It was kind of gross but fascinating. They had real human bodies that had been preserved to show all the organs and muscles and bones underneath the skin. I couldn't believe how many tiny little bones are in the human hand! They also had a climbing structure that was a gigantic model of the human circulatory system with tunnels and tubes showing how blood flows. You could climb through the heart chambers and along the arteries. So cool!Next up was the physics section. This was my favorite part. They had all kinds of hands-on experiments to try. You could ride a spinning disk and feel crazy forces pushing you. You could bend streams of water by charging them with electricity. They even had a miniature tornado machine and a huge Van de Graaff generator that makes your hair stand straight up with static electricity! My sister got such a bad case of static hair. We alsosaw a show in the physics theater all about temperature and how substances change state between solids, liquids and gases. They made a miniature cloud form inside the theater using liquid nitrogen and fog machines. Awesome! The nature and biology wing had tons of interesting live animal exhibits - a tropical rainforest environment with birds and butterflies, a New England forest area with deer, a shark tank, and even a swamp with alligators! They also had a huge dinosaur skeleton on display that was terrifying but mesmerizing. After that was the geology and paleontology area all about rocks, minerals, earthquakes, volcanoes and fossils. You could experience what an earthquake feels like on a shake table and see fluorescent rocks glow under black lights. So trippy! Finally, we went to the technology and innovation wing, which was definitely the most fun. You could try piloting a flight simulator, program little robots to run through mazes, design and test your own video games, and use cutting-edge tools like 3D printers and laser cutters. They even let you use enormous Tesla coils to conduct two million volt lightning storms! Insane!Everywhere you looked there were crazy contraptions to play with and experiment on. I could have spent days there without getting bored. I hardly got to experience half of whatthey had. I'm definitely begging my parents to get a family membership so we can go back again and again. You absolutely need to convince your parents to take you to the Museum of Science over summer vacation or something. I promise you'll think it's just as amazing as I did. Maybe we could even plan a day for both our families to go together? Let me know!Talk to you later,Your friend,[Your name]。

Out of all of America's symbols, none has proved more enduring or evocative than the Statue of Liberty. This giant figure, torch in hand and clutching a stone tablet, has for a century acted as a figurehead for the American Dream; indeed there is probably no more immediately recognizable profile in existence. It's worth remembering that the statue is - for Americans at least - a potent reminder that the USA is a land of immigrants: it was New York Harbor where the first big waves of European immigrants arrived, their ships entering through the Verrazano Narrows to round the bend of the bay and catch a first glimpse of "Liberty Enlightening the World" - an end of their journey into the unknown, and the symbolic beginning of a new life. These days, although only the very wealthy can afford to arrive here by sea, and a would-be immigrant's first (and possibly last) view of the States is more likely to be the customs check at JFK Airport, Liberty remains a stirring sight, with Emma Lazarus's poem, The New Colossus, written originally to raise funds for the statue's base, no less quotable than when it was written……Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. "Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips."Give me your tired, your poor,Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse to your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door."The statue, which depicts Liberty throwing off her shackles and holding a beacon to light the world, was the creation of the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who crafted it a hundred years after the American Revolution in recognition of solidarity between the French and American people (though it's fair to add that Bartholdi originally intended the statue for Alexandria in Egypt). Bartholdi built Liberty in Paris between 1874 and 1884, starting with a terracotta model and enlarging it through four successive versions to its present size, a construction of thin copper sheets boltedtogether and supported by an iron framework designed by Gustave Eiffel. The arm carrying the torch was exhibited in Madison Square Park for seven years, but the whole statue wasn't officially accepted on behalf of the Americanpeople until 1884, after which it was taken apart, crated up and shipped to New York.It was to be another two years before it could be properly unveiled: money had to be collected to fund the construction of the base, and for some reasonAmericans were unwilling - or unable - to dip into their pockets. Only through the campaigning efforts of newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer, a keensupporter of the statue, did it all come together in the end. Richard Morris Hunt built a pedestal around the existing star-shaped Fort Wood, and Liberty was formally dedicated by President Cleveland on October 28, 1886, in aflag-waving shindig that has never really stopped. The statuewas closed for a few years in the mid-1980s for extensive renovation and, in 1986, fifteen million people descended on Manhattan for the statue's centennialcelebrations.Today you can climb steps up to the crown, but the cramped stairway though the torch sadly remains closed to the public. Don't be surprised ifthere's an hour-long wait to ascend. Even if there is, Liberty Park's views of the lower Manhattan skyline, the twin towers of the World Trade Center lording it over the jutting teeth of New York's financial quarter, are spectacular enough. On the surface, Chinatown is prosperous - a "model slum," some have called it - with the lowest crime rate, highest employment and least juvenile delinquency of any city district. Walk through its crowded streets at any time of day, and every shop is doing a brisk and businesslike trade: restaurant after restaurant is booming; there are storefront displays of shiny squids, clawing crabs and clambering lobster; and street markets offer overflowing piles of exotic green vegetables, garlic and ginger root. Chinatown has the feel of a land of plenty, and the reason why lies with the Chinese themselves: even here, in the very core of downtown Manhattan, they have been careful to preserve their own way of dealing with things, preferring to keep affairs close to the bond of the family and allowing few intrusions into a still-insular culture. There have been several concessions to Westerners - storefront signs now offer English translations, and Haagen Dazs and Baskin Robbins ice-cream stores have opened on lower Mott Street - but they can't help but seem incongruous. The one time of the year when Chinatownbursts open is during the Chinese New Year festival, held each year on the first full moon afterJanuary 19, when a giant dragon runs down Mott Street to the accompaniment of firecrackers, and the gutters run with ceremonial dyes.Beneath the neighborhood's blithely prosperous facade, however, there is a darker underbelly. Sharp practices continue to flourish, with traditionalextortion and protection rackets still in business. Non-union sweatshops - their assembly lines grinding from early morning to late into the evening - are still visited by the US Department of Labor, who come to investigate workers' testimonies of being paid below minimum wage for seventy-plus-hour work weeks. Living conditions are abysmal for the poorer Chinese - mostly recent immigrants and the elderly - who reside in small rooms in overcrowdedtenements ill-kept by landlords. Yet, because the community has beencloistered for so long and has only just begun to seek help from city officials for its internal problems, you won't detect any hint of difficulties unless you reside in Chinatown for a considerable length of time. Walt and Roy Disney began their partnership on October 16, 1923 when they signed a contract to produce the Alice Comedies, a series of six- toeight-minute animated films, or "shorts," combining live-action and animation. What began as the Disney Brothers Studio evolved into The Walt Disney Company.Throughout the decades, the company has expandedworldwide from shorts to feature-length animated and live-action films and television production;character merchandise licensing; consumer products retailing; book, magazine and music publishing; Internet activities; television and radio broadcasting; cable television programming; and the operation of theme parks and resorts. From the creation of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in 1927 and the debut of Mickey Mouse in 1928 to the premiere of Tarzan in 1999, animation has remained the defining signature of the company. Along the way, Disney has added successful TV shows like Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, openedtheme parks in California, Florida, France and Japan, launched more than 700 Disney Stores and added brands such as Touchstone, Miramax, ABC and ESPN to the fold.To make the most of Disneyland - the ultimate escapist fantasy and the blueprint for imitations worldwide - throw yourself right into it. Don't think twice about anything and go on every ride you can. The high admission price ($36) includes them all, although during peak periods each one can entail hours of queueing. Remember, too, that the emphasis is on family fun; the authorities take a dim view of anything remotely anti-social and eject those they consider guilty.Over four hundred "Imaginers" worked to create the Indiana JonesAdventure, Disneyland's biggest opening in years. Two hours of queueing are built into the ride, with an interactive archeological dig and 1930s-stylenewsreel show leading up to the main feature - a giddy journey along 2500ft of skull-encrusted corridors in which you face fireballs, falling rubble, venomous snakes and, inevitably, arolling boulder finale. Disney claims that, thanks to computer engineering, no two Indiana Jones rides are ever alike. Judge for yourself.Among the best of the older rides are two in Adventureland: the Pirates of the Caribbean, a boat trip through underground caverns, singing along withdrunken pirates; and the Haunted Mansion, a riotous "doom buggy" tour in the company of the house spooks.Tomorrowland is Disney's vision of the future, where the Space Mountain roller coaster zips through the pitch-blackness of outer space, and the Star Tours ride simulates a journey into the world of George Lucas. The Skyway cable-car line that connects Tomorrowland with the clever but cloyingly sentimental Fantasyland is the only spot in the park from which you can see the outside world. As for accommodation, try to visit Disneyland just for the day and spend the night somewhere else. Most of the hotels and motels nearby cost well in excess of $70 per night. You're not permitted to bring your own food to the park; you can only consume the fast food sold on the premises.Disneyland is at 1313 Harbor Blvd, Anaheim, 45 minutes by car from downtown using the Santa Ana Freeway. In summer, the park is open daily between 8am and 1am; otherwise opening hours are weekdays 10am to 6pm, Saturday 9am to midnight, and Sunday 9am to 10pm. Arrive early; trafficquickly becomes nightmarish, especially in the summer.
