By observing subtle changes in nature that would be unnoticeable to most people-in air currents, the flowering and shedding of leaves of certain trees, the behaviour of ants, bird songs, etc-they have been able to interpret weather patterns and provide valuable advice. What difficulty do local rainmakers face in making weather predictions? But the irregular weather patterns brought by climate change mean therainmakers can no longer use those sighs to make their predictions. And they don’t have access to the technologies available to meteorologists (气象学家).“Climate change has come on so fast. People don’t know how to adapt or what to plant,”says Obedi Osoce, a traditional weatherman. “Our traditional crops are disappearing because they cannot handle the new conditions. We need new strategies to handle clim ate change.”Now a British-Canadian project is doing just that, linking the rainmakers with government meteorologists. The two groups get together each season and produce an agreed forecast to be spread using a variety of methods suited to communities where many cannot read or write-through ceremonies, public meetings and person-to person comma-kation.Both parties are pleased with the collaboration. “I think the two sciences equally valid. We are marrying our energies to help people better,”says Mr. Onunga, a Nganyi community elder involved in the project.‘The results have been surprisingly good-the community agreed that the forecast was accurate,”says Gilbert Ouma, a lecturer at the University of Nairobi.“Through this project we hope to learn what it is that we can share together to live today and to adapt to tomorrow,”says Professor Laban Ogallo, leader of the Nganyi project.36. A Company Taking Care of Young ParentsPassage ThreeHarry Potter fans will instantly recognize the snowy owl as Harry’s famous companies, Hedwig, but these beautiful owls are easily recognizable not for their magical associations, but for their large size and striking while feathers. Snowy owls are, in fact, the only white owl, and they are a highly sought after species for many birdwatchers to add to their life lists.Foods: Small mammals, birds, fish.Habitat and Migration: Snowy owls are found in far northern latitudes including tundra, a vast treeless frozen region in the Arctic. Their breeding grounds (繁殖地) are in the Arctic tundra, and they migrate south throughout Canada during the winter. In exceptionally server winters or when food supplies are searce, these owls can appear much further south than their normal range. While principally a North American bird, they can also migrate to the northern areas of Europe an Asia.Behaviour: Snowy owls, like all owls, are powerful animal bunters that are active mostly at night but can bunt and feed during the day, especially when food supplies are low. These owls will rest on the ground or on rocks, stumps and other low favorable points. Males can be fierce when defending the nest, and both genders will also perform an “injured bird” act to tempt animal invaders to go away from the nest.Reproduction: Snowy owls may incubate (孵卵) 3-10 eggs for 30-34 days, or the incubation may be done primarily by the freak. The baby owls remain in the nest for 14-21 days and will attempt their first flight when they are 42-58 days old. They may stop producing eggsB. They will reduce their flightsC. They will be less active at nightD. They will only hunt during he day Passage FourWe lost two superstars in 1977. Neither man’s admirers have been able to understand the success of the other one. And this tells us something of the difference between the generations that the two singers represent. There were similarities between Bing Crosby and Elvis Presley. Both reached fame while young and became very rich. Although neither one had any musical education, both developed their own musical styles, which were first criticized by the critics and later studied as new forms in the art of popular song. Both men had successful movie careers despite a total lack of acting ability. Both were creations of the microphone, which made it possible for singers with weak voices to be heard beyond the third now. With Bing the microphone was usually hidden; but Elvis brought it to the stage. The difference between the two men reflects the changing values in American life Crosby’s music was soothing( 令人舒畅的) , Presley’s was disturbing. Crosby was singing to wartime America. His audiences had all the disturbance they could handle in their private lives, they did not want to buy more at the record shop and the movie theater.Crosby’s admires always said how “relaxed”and “natural”he was. When Presley began his career, the whole country had become relaxed and easygoing. Its young people, who had no memory of trouble times, found it boring. They were hungry for excitement. They welcomed Elvis, who was certainly not the kind of young man their parents would admire. Presley wasload and vulgar( 粗俗的) ——and be was bringing something new and exciting. It is probably too simple to explain each man in terms of changes in the economic and political situation. Something in the culture was also changing.48、Which of the following could be inferred about Crosby and Presley?A. They died in the same year.B. They became popular in 1977C. They influenced each other in musicD. They represented the postwar generation49、In which aspect the singers are similar to each other?A. Their songs were widely used in moviesB. They became famous in late year of their livesC. Their musical styles are recognized by the criticsD. Neither of them received any formal musical education50、What did Crosby’s audiences get from his music?A. ExcitementB. DisturbanceC. Ease and comfortD. Passion and thrill51、What is most Presley to be discussed if the passage continues?A. The political situation that the two singers facedB. The cultural changes that the two singers experiencedC. The economic influence on the music of the two singersD. The message that the two singers expressed in their musicPassage FiveThere are millions of left-handed people in the world. A number of them got together in 1975 to form an association called Left-handers International. The purpose of the organization is to fight discrimination (particularly to jobs) and to inform the public. They want everybody to understand the left-handers are neither “strange” nor sick nor dangerous. Many studies have been made recently about hand preference in humans. They have brought interesting results. It has been found, for instance, that many more men than women are left-handed; that all children use both hands about equally until they are three years old; and that hand preference is not clearly marked until age six. Above that age, most people not only favour one particular hand but also have a favourite eye, a favourite ear and foot.We know that the left side of the body is controlled by the right side of the brain, which seems that this particular half is the seat of emotions, imagination, and of the sense of space. And, indeed, lefties in seem to be more creative than the right-handers; they also seem to be more athletic and to do better in some professions which ---like sports----require a good sense of space. In a large school of architecture , it was found in 1977 that 29% of the professes and 23% of the graduating students were left-handed---while lefties represent less than 10% of the general population. Finally, left-handers may be more stubborn and impulsive( 冲动的) than right-handers. And they are more likely to suffer from problems such as stuttering( 口吃) and a difficulty in reading called dyslexia. The problems are more serious in left-handed persons who have been forced to favour their right hand. Doctors insist that one should never try to change a child’s hand preference.52、What does Left-handers International aim to do for left-handers?A. To create new jobsB. To promote equalityC. To show discriminationD. To study hand preference53、According to recent studies, when is hand preference formed?A. Before birthB. At birthC. At age threeD. At age six54、Compared with right-handers, left-handers______A. are less creativeB. are more easygoingC. have a better sense of spaceD. do better in most professions55、Left-handers are advised to stick to their hand preference because_____A. it is fun and comfortable to be left-handersB. the left hand is just as good as the right handC. it is difficult for them to switch to the right handD. changing hand preference may cause serious problemsV. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choice marked A), B), C) andD). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on theAnswer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage OneStrange things happen to time when you travel, because the earth is divided into twenty four time zones, one hour apart. You can have days with more than twenty-four hours, and weeks with more or fewer than seven days.If you make a five-day trip across the Atlantic ocean, your ship enters a different time zone every day. As you enter each zone, the time changes one hour. Traveling west, you set your clock back; traveling east, you set it ahead. Each day of your trip has either twenty-five of twenty-three hours. If you travel by ship across the Pacific, you cross the international date line. By agreement, this is the point where a new day begins. When you cross the line, you change your calendar one full day, backward or forward. Traveling east, today becomes yesterday, traveling west, it is tomorrow!51. The difference in time between zones is _________ .A) more than seven daysB) twenty-four hoursC) one hourD) seven days52. From this selection, it seems true that the Atlantic Ocean ______.A) is in one time zoneB) cannot be crossed in five daysC) is divided into five time zonesD) is divided into twenty-four zones53. If you are thinking of buying a dog, however, you should first decide what sort of companion you need and whether the dog is likely to be happy in the surroundings you can provide. Specialist advice is available to help you choose the most suitable breed of dog. But in part, the decisiondepends on common sense. Different dogs were originally developed to perform specific tasks. So, if you want a dog to protect you or your house, for example, you should choose a breed that has the right size and characteristicsYou must also be ready to devote a good deal of time to train the dog when it is young and give it the exercise it needs throughout its life, unless live in the country and can let it run freely. Dogs are demanding pets. Cats love the house and so are satisfactory with their place which is secure, but a dog is loyal to its master and consequently wants him to show proof of his affection. The best time to buy a baby dog is when it is between 6 and 8 weeks old so that it can transfer its affection from its mother to its master. If baby dogs have not established a relationship with the human being until they are over three months old, their strong relationship will always be with dogs. They are likely to be too shy when they are brought out into the world to become good pets.55. Which of the following is Not true according to the passage?A) Size and characteristics of the dogs should be considered too.B) It is common sense that is the most important when choosing a dog.C) You should decide what kind of dog you want.D) You can always get help from the specialists.56. What is mentioned as a consideration in buying a dog?A) The price of the dog.B) The color of the dog.C) Whether the dog will fit the environment.D) Whether the dog will get along with the other pets in the house.57. Why does the writer say a dog is a more demanding pet than a cat?A) It must be looked after carefully.B) It demands more food and space.C) It needs more love and care.D) It must be trained so that it won’t bite.58. Why is it advised to buy a baby dog under three months old?A) It’s easier to buy a baby dog under three months old.B) They are less likely to run away.C) They are less likely to be shy with human beings.D) It’s easier for them to form a relationship with their masters.Passage ThreeStudents who want to attend an American college or university must explain how they will pay for their education. They have to show that they will be able to pay for each year of study.Students have to consider not only the tuition, the cost of classes, but also meals and a place to live, known as room-and-board. They also need money for books , supplies ,social activities and other things.Educational advisers say foreign students should keep enough money in a local bank to pay for at least two months of spending. So how much will it cost every year to study at an American school? Generally speaking, the answer is: a lot. The University of Washington says foreign students are paying more than thirty-six thousand dollars this year. Its website says the Universityof Washington does not offer financial assistance to international students. This is generally true of American schools, especially at the undergraduate level. It means foreign students are faced with a heavy financial burden. The international application for the university includes a Statement of Financial Responsibility that must be signed. Students must also provide a bank letter or statement from within the past six months. And they have to name anyone who will help with payments. These people must send proof from a bank to show that they have the money. The government or employer may be able to help you pay all or some college costs. A good idea is to ask at least eighteen months before you want to start classes in the United States.Enough time should be ensured to go through procedures.59. Which statement is true according to the first paragraph?A) Foreign students in America can hardly support themselves.B) They should show that they are able to pay the first year of their study.C) Room-and-board refers to the expense on meals and accommodation.D) Students intending to attend an American college or university should explain who will payfor their education.60. Furthermore, it is questionable whether ultimately nuclear power is a cheap source of energy. There have, for example, been very costly accidents in America, in Britain and, of course, in Russia. The possibility of increases in the cost ofuranium(铀)in addition to the cost of greater safety provisions could price nuclear power out of the market. In the long run, environmentalists argue, nuclear energy wastes valuable resources and disturbs the ecology(生态)to an extent which could bring about the destruction of the human race. Thus, if we wish to survive, we cannot afford nuclear energy. In spite of the ease against nuclear energy outlined above, nuclear energy programs are expanding. Such an expansion assumes a continual growth in industrial production and consumer demands. However, it is doubtful whether this growth will or can continue. Having weighed up the arguments on both sides, it seems there are good economic and ecological reasons for sources of energy other than nuclear power.

We live in a consumer society where there is an enormous demand for commercial products of all kinds. Moreover, an increase in industrial production is considered to be one solution to the problem of mass unemployment. Such an increase presumes(意味着)an abundant and cheap energy supply. Many people believe that nuclear energy provides an inexhaustible(用不完的)and economical source of power and that it is therefore essential for an industrially developing society. There are a number of other advantages in the use of nuclear energy. Firstly, nuclear power, except for accidents, is clean. A further advantage is that a nuclear power station can be run and maintained by relatively few technical and administrative staff. The nuclear reactor represents an enormous step in our scientific evolution and , whatever the anti-nuclear group says, it is wrong to expect a return to more primitive sources of fuel. However, opponents of nuclear energy point out that nuclear power stations bring a direct threat not only to the environment but also to civil liberties. The two groups get together each season and produce an agreed forecast to be spread using a variety of methods suited to communities where many cannot read or write-through ceremonies, public meetings and person-to person comma-kation.Both parties are pleased with the collaboration. " I think the two sciences equally valid. We are marrying our energies to help people better,〞says Mr. Onunga, a Nganyi community elder involved in the project.‘The results have been surprisingly good-the community agreed that the forecast was accurate,〞says Gilbert Ouma, a lecturer at the University of Nairobi. The difference between the two men reflects the changing values in American life Crosby’s music was soothing< 令人舒畅的> , Presley’s was disturbing. Crosby was singing to wartime America. His audiences had all the disturbance they could handle in their private lives, they did not want to buy more at the record shop and the movie theater.Crosby’s admires always said how "relaxed〞and "natural〞he was. When Presley began his career, the whole country had become relaxed and easygoing. Its young people, who had no memory of trouble times, found it boring. They were hungry for excitement. They welcomed Elvis, who was certainly not the kind of young man their parents would admire. Presley was load and vulgar< 粗俗的> ——and be was bringing something new and exciting. It is probably too simple to explain each man in terms of changes in the economic and political situation. A number of them got together in 1975 to form an association called Left-handers International. The purpose of the organization is to fight discrimination <particularly to jobs> and to inform thepublic. They want everybody to understand the left-handers are neither "strange〞nor sick nor dangerous. Finally, left-handers may be more stubborn and impulsive< 冲动的> thanright-handers. And they are more likely to suffer from problems such as stuttering< 口吃> and a difficulty in reading called dyslexia. 答案是A. 学会______得与失. 答案是A,deal.Struggle with与….. I made a special food for you〔为你而special,目的吧〕. aspecial hospital 专门医院specialist 就是专家的意思.题干句子大意是这些好处是"与众不同的〞.答案是C.24、一网解析:confidence〔信心〕and self-esteem〔自尊〕______from a …… 答案是C.Rretain保留;reserve储备;prevent预防.27、一网解析:see….as….把…..看作…...题外话:看着孩子矫健的身躯驰骋在运动场上,那个美滋滋的劲儿甭提多受用了.此处用一比喻句把body比作了驰骋运动场的tool.的确,身体就是博取人生的一tool,病怏怏的body,那么你的tool就需要sports了.答案是B.28、一网解析:好身体就能够less 遭遇"feeling of low self-worth〞的可能性.答案是A,likely. Bbe able to do sth"是指有能力去做某事〞.答案是A.Able与Capable的区别:词义上:able尤其指某一时之"能力〞;capable指的是一持久性的能力,另外尤其指某一专门的能力.搭配:able后面接todo ,而capable接of介词.例如:she is an able teacher.<能干,但是不知道是不是专业方面>.she is an capableteacher.<专业胜任>.32、一网解析:winning不仅仅是唯一的confidence builder,一个_____pass or assistant….. 定位句是:builds loyalty和helpparents shift back into work mode. 答案是A.

For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice, and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1I’m a Chinese student studying in Canada. I have been a boarder with the Carsons for more than a year and a half. The Carsons live in their own house, which has four bedrooms including the one in the basement(底层) which I live in. Judy does all the work in the house and Andrew is responsible for the work in the garden. When they go out in the evening, they often ask me to look after their children.Judy’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morris, lived in another city. Judy was their only child and naturally they doted on(宠爱) Judy’s children. They often sent the children presents.Last April Mr. Morris died. Now that Mrs. Morris was quite alone, I expected that Judy would want her to come and live with them. One day, Margaret told me grandma was coming to live with them and her daddy and mummy woul d want my room back. The news didn’t surprise me and the next day I went to Judy and asked her about it. I said I couldn’t think of living in their basement room any longer if it was needed for Mrs. Morris. Judy seemed surprised at first. Then she told me there was no need for me to move, for they hadn’t yet come to any decision about her mother coming to live with them. “Naturally I’m worried about my mother. She has been in poor health.” She smiled sadly and added. “To be honest, Andrew and my mother have never got on well. We’ll wait a bit and see what happens. Perhaps Mother will be all right living herself, or perhaps they will both change their minds.”That was six months ago. During this time I’ve heard that Mrs. Morris has had two illnesses and that her health has got worse. A nursing home was mentioned once but Mrs. Morris refused to go there. Nursing Homes and the AgedPassage 2Overhead bridges are found in many parts of Beijing, especially in places where traffic is very heavy and crossing the road is dangerous. The purpose of these bridges is to enable pedestrians to cross roads safely. Overhead bridges are used in very much the same way as a zebra crossing. They are more efficient although lessconvenient because people have to climb up a long flight of steps. This is inconvenient especially to older people. When pedestrians use an overhead bridge, they do not hold up traffic. However, when they cross a busy road using a zebra crossing, traffic is held up. This is why the government has built many overhead bridges to help pedestrians and to keep traffic moving at the same time. The government of Beijing has spent a large amount of money on building these bridges. For their own safety, pedestrians should be encouraged to use them instead of risking their lives by dashing across the road. Old people, however, may find it a little difficult climbing up and down the steps, but it is still much safer than walking across the road with all the danger of moving traffic.Overhead bridges serve a very useful purpose. Pedestrians, both old and young, should make it a habit to use them. This will prevent unnecessary accidents and loss of life.66. What is the advantage of overhead bridges mentioned in this passage?A. Taller trucks can pass under them.B. Pedestrians can climb up and have a view of the city.C. They are safer for pedestrians and can keep traffic moving at the same time.D. They are easier and more convenient for the pedestrians.67. Why were overhead bridges built in Beijing?A. Because they save time for the pedestrians.68. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. Overhead bridges are found in every part of Beijing.B. Overhead bridges are only found in the centre of Beijing.C. Overhead bridges are found in many parts of big cities in China.D. Overhead bridges are found in places where traffic is heavy.69. The underlined words “a zebra crossing” probably mean ______.A. a safe place across a road for pedestrians to walk across the roadB. a wild animal from Africa that looks like a horse with broad dark brown and white stripes on its bodyC. a safe place across a road for zebras to walk across the roadD. a safe place across a road for older people to rest in70. To build overhead bridges is the business of the government.Passage 3There was a time when,if a lady got into a crowded bus or train,a gentleman would immediately stand up and offer his seat. But now, things are different. Today a gentleman will probably look out of the window or if he feels a bit shy, hide behind his newspaper. Either way,the lady will have to stand until someone else gets off.You can’t entirely blame men for this change in manners, though. Gone are the days when women could be referred to as weakers without causing trouble. A whole generation of women has grown up demanding equality with men,not just equality in jobs or education, but in social life. Hold a door open for some women and you are likely to get an angry lecture on treating women as inferiors(能力低下的人) unable to open doors for themselves. Take a girl out for meal and she’ll probably insist on paying her share of the bill. On second thoughts, that is perhaps not such a bad idea. It’s no wonder, then, that men have given up some ways of politeness and consideration which they used to show towards women. On the other hand, the man’s active politeness is perhaps slowly being replaced by true consideration for the needs and feelings of women,so that men can see women as equal human beings, rather than as weakers or something that can be used to please men.71. Today, when a lady gets on a crowded bus or train, a gentleman would probably______ .A. stand up and offer her his seatB. read his newspaperC. look out of the windowD. not stand up and offer her his seat72. What men do towards women on a crowded bus or train today is______ .A. really badB. strange enoughC. not entirely wrongD. entirely wrong73. The new generation of women wants to be______ .A. treated not as the weaker sexB. treated as the weaker sexC. cared for on buses and trainsD. better treated than before74. According to the passage, which of the following is Not correct?A. Some women may get angry if you open the door for them.B. Girls don’t want you to pay for meal at all.C. Some women may criticize you if you show too much politeness to them.D. A girl may be unhappy if you insist on paying her share of the bill.75. From this passage, we know that______ .A. women need true consideration of their needs and feelingsB. men have given up some politeness they used to show to womenC. women often get angry if you’re polite to themD. women should stand in the bus or trainPassage 4Family” is of course an elastic word. But when British people say that their society is based on family life, they are thinking of “family” in its narrow, peculiarly European sense of mother, father and children living together alone in their own house as an economic and social unit. Thus, every British marriage indicates the beginning of a new and independent family—hence the tremendous importance of marriage in British life. For both the man and the woman, marriage means leaving one’s parents and starting one’s own life. The man’s first duty will then be to his wife, and the wife’s to her husband. He will be entirely responsible for her financial support, and she for the running of the new home. Their ch ildren will be their common responsibility and theirs alone. Neither the wife’s parents nor the husband’s, nor their brothers or sisters, aunts or uncles, have any right to interfere with them—they are their own masters.Readers of novels like Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice will know that in former times marriage among wealthy families was arranged by the girl’s parents, that is, it was the parents’ duty to find a suitable husband for their daughter, preferably a rich one, and by skillfulencouragement to lead him eventually to ask their permission to marry her. Until that time, the girl was protected and maintained in the parents’ home, and the financial relief of getting rid of her could be seen in their giving the newly married pair a sum of money called a dowry(嫁妆). It is very different today. Most girls of today get a job when they leave school and become financially independent before their marriage. This has had two results: a girl chooses her own husband, and she gets no dowry.76. What does th e author mean by “‘Family’ is of course an elastic word”?A. Different families have different ways of life.B. Different definitions could be given to the word.C. Different nations have different families.D. Different times produce different families.77. For an English family, the husband’s duty is______ .A. supporting the family while the wife is financialB. defending the family while the wife is running the homeC. financial while the wife is running the homeD. independent while the wife is dependent78. If a listener hears what he has expected, it will be much easier for him to receive the information. But if what he hears is totally out of his expectation,he will fail to get the message. The skill to anticipate what is coming in listening comprehension depends largely on the listener's familiarity with the theme(主题)of the message. It also depends on the listener's knowledge of the speaker as well as the situation.Obviously, when we listen to something that we already have some information about, it is generally much easier for us to take in the new information .Therefore,pre-listening preparation seems to play an important role in increasing our comprehension .Before actual listening ,we could perhaps first give some thought to the topic ,discuss it with others ,and then read some related material and do some vocabulary work. Part I Reading Comprehension (60 marks, 60minutes)Section AFormat IDirections: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D.You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on AnswerSheet1.Passage OneQuestions 1to 5are based on the following passage:It is often claimed that nuclear energy is something we cannot do without. Firstly, nuclear power, except for英语试题 第 1页 共14页accidents, is clean. A further advantage is that a nuclear power station can be run and maintained by relatively few technical and administrative staff. The nuclear reactor represents an enormous step in our scientific evolution and, whatever the anti-nuclear group says, it is wrong to expect a return to more primitive sources of fuel. However, opponents of nuclear energy point out that nuclear power stations bring a direct threat not only to the environment but also to civil liberties.Furthermore, it is questionable whether ultimately nuclear power is a cheap source of energy. There have, for example, been very costly accidents in America, in Britain and, of course, in Russia. The possibility of increases in the cost of uranium(铀)in addition to the cost of greater safety provisions could price nuclear power out of the market. In the long run, environmentalists argue, nuclear energy wastes valuable resources and disturbs the ecology(生态)to an extent which could bring about the destruction of the human race. Thus, if we wish to survive, we cannot afford nuclear energy. In spite of the case against nuclear energy outlined above, nuclear energy programs are expanding. Such an expansion assumes a continual growth in industrial production and consumer demands. However, it is doubtful whether this growth will or can continue. Having weighed up the arguments on both sides, it seems there are good economic and ecological reasons for sources of energy other than nuclear power.1.According to the passage, what can help solve the social problem of unemployment?A. Developing science and technology.B. Increasing the industrial production.C. Increasing the demand for commercial products.D.Providing an abundant and cheap energy supply.2. Which of the following is NOT one of the reasons why some people support the nuclear energy?A. Nuclear energy cannot be used up and it is clean.B. Nuclear energy saves money and manpower.C. Nuclear energy is symbolic of the scientific development.D.Nuclear energy brings people comfort and convenience.3.Which of the following statements may the writer agree with?A. Nuclear energy programs will undoubtedly continue expanding. B.The demand for commercial products will surely keep growing in any case.C. Uranium is a good source of energy for economic and ecological reasons.D.The increasing cost may possibly force nuclear energy to withdraw from the market.4.The writer mentions the nuclear accidents in America,Britain and Russia to show that ______.A. if an accident should happen, it would cost a lot of moneyB. there will be no uranium to be used in the futureC. nuclear waste is a potential danger to human healthD.nuclear energy will finally destroy the human beings5.What is the writer’s attitude towards nuclear energy?A. Indifferent.B.Tolerant.C. Negative.D.Supportive.Passage TwoQuestions 6to 10are based on the following passage:Lloyd Slocum was unemployed for 18 months, but like hundreds of thousands of Americans, he’s working part time this holiday shopping season, unloading trucks and stocking shelves for a Bealls store in Port St. Lucie, Fla.“It gives you something to look forward to,”says Slocum, 29.He plans to use cash to buy his father a Christmas present and hopes to move on to a full-time position with Bealls/Burke’s stores, a Sunbelt chain.Black Friday, the official start of holiday shopping heat, also kicks off the less-celebrated season of the part-time worker. Retailers(零售商)alone are hiring about 500,000 seasonal employees this year, most of whom are part time, according to the National Retail Federation. Retailers’recent shift to opening on Thanksgiving or midnight on Black Friday has intensified the need for part-time workers.Holiday jobs offer financial and emotional lifeline for many of the nation’s jobless. They also point up a troubling reality:A near-record number of Americans are working part time throughout the year, even though they would prefer full-time jobs. It’s not just because of the recession Economists cite a broader, longer-term shift toward part-time work as employers cut expenses and more precisely match staffing with ups and downs of customer demand. The number of part-timers who really want full-time positions —so-called involuntary英语试题 第 3页 共14页part-time employees—has risen from 8.4 million in January to 8.9 million last month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The total has hung at 8.5 million to 9 million since early 2009 —double the pre-recession level.By contrast, the total of unemployed Americans has stayed flat at about 13.9 million this year and is down from about 15 million in late 2009 as employers had added 2 million or so jobs. She cites a 2009 study finding mothers in Ohio think caring for their children is far less pleasant than mothers in Rennes, France. What exactly do French parents do that’s so different from American parents? A few examples:Teaching kids patience and self-control through delayed gratification: French parents teach their children to wait for what they want from an early age—for a few minutes, usually— instead of immediately giving into kids’demands.“I’m now convinced that the secret of why French kids rarely whine or collapse into tantrums(发脾气)—or at least do so less than American kids—is that they’ve developed the internal resources to cope with frustration,” Druckerman writes.Sleep training often begins at birth: In France, babies are expected to be sleeping through the night by the time they’re four months old. Parents don’t ignore their babies’cries but they do pause before responding to them.“French parents believe it’s their job to gently teach babies to sleep well,” she writes. “ They don’t view being up half the night with an eight-month-old as a sign of parental commitment.”They don’t give in to guilt over spending time away from their kids: French women believe that “it’s unhealthy for mothers and children to spend all their time together. … Children—even babies and toddlers—get to cultivate their inner lives without a mother’s constant interference.”11.It can be inferred from the first paragraph that ______.A. To save money and time at the baggage claim, passengers carry as much as they can on board, with predictable consequences. At security checkpoints, these millions of extra bags, many of them densely packed, mean longer lines. Once past security, the fun continues at boarding. On a typical flight, there’s a fierce fight for scarce overhead bin space, extending the boarding process. Bags that are stuffed under seats make passengers even more uncomfortable. There has got to be a better way. In fact, there is. Here’s what a more sensible system would look like:No fee for the first piece of checked luggage. It would be better if airlines simply raised fares (机票) instead of fees. Limit the carry-on size and charge for large carry-ons. Use templates (标尺) at the security checkpoints to cut off the monster bags that now often escape airline staff’s notice until they’re right at the door of the plane. Tax the airlines’ income from fees the same way that fares are taxed. Currently, the fees are tax free, encouraging airlines to generate income through fees rather than fare increases. We’re sympathetic to the airline industry’s need to make money, but the baggage fees—previously intended to offset rising fuel costs—have become an interruption that slows down the security check, offloads costs onto fliers and makes the boarding process even more unpleasant than it already is.16.What makes the air travelers most frustrated at the airport?A.The limited overhead bin space for bags.B.The number of bags they carry onboard.C.The long line at the baggage claim.D.The extra fee they have to pay for carry-ons. 17.What is the main cause of increasing number of carry-ons?A.The fee for the first piece of checked baggage.B.The tax placed on the fees on the carry-ons.C.The bitter fight for the overhead bin space.D.The complicated boarding process.18.What does the author mean by saying “the fun continues at boarding”?A. City Problems
Nowadays, millions of people flood into cities in search of jobs and better living. However, with the sharp rise in the urban population, many problems arise.
Firstly, cities become more and more crowded, putting much pressure upon transportation, housing, education, employment and so on. Secondly, a growing number of private cars emit a huge amount of carbon dioxide, leaving the air heavily polluted. What’s more, the city is also threatened by an increase in crime.
All these problems have harmed the attractiveness and quality of city life. To solve the problem, on the one hand, the government should take effective measures to bridge the gap between the cities and rural areas. On the other hand, more money should be spent on improving public services and facilities.
