Passage 1
Artificial Satellites are any objects that were purposefully put in space to orbit (绕轨道) around a planet ,the Moon, or the Sun .The satellites are used for communication, militart intelligence, and scientific studies of outer space. The frist artificial satellite was launched in 1957, and since tnen, satellites have become an invaluable part of today’s technologh.
Placing a satellite into orbit requires a tremendous amount of energy, which must come from the lanuch vehicle, or a device that launches the satellite. The sarellite needs to reach an altitude (高度) of at least 120 miles and a speed of over 18,000 mph to lift into orbit successfully. Satellite receive this combination of poteneial energy(altitude) and kinetic energy (speed) from multi-stage rockets burning chemical fuels.
The frist stage of the multi-stage rockets is designed to privide enough energy to lift the entire launch vehicle, which contains fuel, the satellite, off the launch pad into the frist part of the flight .After its engines use up all its fuel , the frist stage rocket separates from the launch vehicle ,falling back to the earth.
The second stage rocket pushes the satellite into orbit . Once the satellite has been lifted to its destination point , the second stage rockets also detach. However, some satellites require an orbit that is farther from the Earth and have the third stage rockets to boost them to an altitude of its mission .After the satellite has reached the final altitude ,another rocket engine fires and gives the satellite a circular orbit. All rockets must burn at a precise moment and last for a precise amount of time so that the satellite achieves its proper in space.
11.What’s the main idea of this passage?
A.Rocket lunching.
B.Placing a satellite into orbit.

unching satellite requires a tremendous amount of energy.
C.The satellite must reach a speed of over 18,000 mph.
D.Satellites receive this combination of potential energy and kinetic energy from multi-stage rockets burning chemical fuels.
13.Generally speaking, how mang stages are there in a multi-stage rocket?
A.T wo.
B.Three.
C.Four.
D.Five.
14.”___”is closest in meaning to the word”detach”?

A.The satellite reaches an altitude of at most 120 miles.
B.The satellite flies at a speed of 18,000 mph only.
C.The sdtellite receives a combination of potential energy.
D.All rockets must burn at a precise moment and last for a precise amount of time.
Passage 2
When a teacher or a lecturer recommends a student to read a book, it is usually for a particular purpose. In many cases, the teacher doesn’t suggest that the whole book should be read.In face, he may just refer to few pages which have a direct bearing on the matter being discussed.
