在现代社会中,新闻的来源主要有记者的采访和通讯社的电讯稿等。
无论是记者采访写稿还是通讯社的发送稿,一般均应注明消息的出处。
1.新闻电头
报上所载的消息除了各报记者采写的外,不少是由各大通讯社提供发送的电讯稿(news despatches), 因为各报(尤其是中小型地点报纸)无法派出众多记者去全国甚至世界各地采写消息,这样,通讯社发送的电讯稿便成了报纸主要的消息来源。
世界上用英文提供电讯稿的通讯社很多,常见的主要是:美国的AP(Associated Press美联社)和UPI(United Press International 合众国际社)英国的Reuters(The Reuter Ltd 路透社)、法国的AFP(L’Agence France Press法新社),以及日本的Kyodo(共同社)、俄罗斯的Itar-Tass 【“俄通社-塔斯社”,简称俄通社或俄塔社】
电讯稿的体裁结构与前面第二三章介绍的消息写作基本相同。
但是,值得注意的是,通讯社的名称一般都置于电讯稿的导语之前,社名一般用括号圈起来以示醒目。
例如:
i.BAGHDAD,Nov. 26(Reuters)----- Iraq’s health minister described
here today the West’s refusal to unfreeze Iraqi assets to allow
Baghdad to buy life-saving drugs as “the crime of the century”.

看了上面两条电讯稿导语前所标明的通讯社社名后,我们还应注意社名前记者发稿的地点及日期。
例如:例1中的BAGHDAD(巴格达)和Nov.26(11月26日)说明记者是在11月26日在巴格达发送这条消息的。
发稿地点、日期及通讯社名这三个要素构成了电讯稿的“电头”(dateline)。
这条电头可译为“路透社巴格达11月26日电”。
同样,例2的电头可译为“合众国际社伦敦11月22日电。
”请注意,将英文电头汉译时,应注意电头“三要素”的先后顺序,其排列顺序与中文不同的。
2.消息来源
英文新闻报道,无论是记者采写稿还是电讯稿,习惯上都标明消息出处,不仅对新闻事实注明来源,而且对于有关的言论、观点、意见等也一一交代来历,以示报道的“真实”、“客观”与“可信”,说明记者没有搀杂个人观点或态度。
从交代手法而言,英文报道的新闻来源主要有三种:
2.1 具体确切的消息来源
这类消息来源,有名有姓地交代有关的机构、组织和个人。
例如:i.The Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) summit has
unanimously adopted a number of resolutions on the Palestine issue, the Palestine Liberation of Organization leader Yasser Arafat said on Tuesday evening.

2.2 似真非真的消息来源
记者有时出于严谨的报道态度,或消息来源本身尚未十分清楚等原因,撰稿时经常用某些惯用短语来含糊、委婉地交代一下消息来源。
这种“故作姿态”的写作手法,一方面可表示报道是公正、客观的;另一方面,万一消息不符合事实,记者则可以以此搪塞或推诿责任,逃避文责自负。
例如:
i.The talks probably would be held at the State Department and
officials were already giving up their offices to make room for the
visitors, disclosed a source who asked not to be identified.
