The new conquerors (called the Normans) brought with them a kind of French, which became the language of the Royal Court, and the ruling and business classes. In the 14th century English became dominant in Britain again, but with many French words added. This language is called Middle English. It was the language of the great poet Chaucer乔叟 (c1340-1400), but it would still be difficult for native English speakers to understand today.

The history of the English language began over 1500 years ago in the north of Europe. Around the fifth century A.D., tribes of people known as the Angels, Saxons, and Jutes traveled west from Germany and Denmark across the North Sea. They settled in Britain, and by the late seventh century, they were speaking an early form of the English.

What is Literature?
Literature refers to the practice and profession of writing. It comes from human interest in telling a story, in arranging words in artistic forms, in describing in words some aspects of human experiences. Literature shows us not only what a society is like in a certain age, but also what individuals feel about it, what they hope from it, and how they can change it or escape from it.

英语的起源发展和演变
词汇方面的变化
• 词汇变化主要体现为量的剧增和新词的使用 英语词汇主要通过以下几种途径得以 丰富自己:
• 旧词新义generalization如:动词park停放;原是军事用语;专指停放炮车 当汽车工业 高度发展后;人们自然将其词义扩大;使park获得新义;并由此产生了parking lot露天 停车场;parking meter停车计时器;parker停车的人;parking ticket警察给违反停车规则 者的传票等
The History of English Language
•
The history of English is conventionally; if perhaps too neatly; divided into three periods usually called Old or
AngloSaxon English; Middle English; and Modern English The earliest period begins with the migration of certain
A Table of Alphabetical English Words

The English Language PowerPoint
Early Modern English
Up until 1485, England had been a very divided country, and had experienced many rebellions and civil and factional wars. By the end of the fifteenth century, however, England had become a relatively peaceful and stable kingdom. London was now a strong and influential capital city with no rival in England. Travel and communication within the kingdom was now much faster and more efficient . All these factors had a considerable influence on the standardisation of English throughout the country. But the most important development was the invention of the printing press in the 1470s. This had the effect of standardising the spelling of English. The same publications were understood throughout the whole of England, but spoken English still had many dialects and accents. Increasing international travel, especially to mainland Europe, meant that English began to ‘borrow’ many foreign words, especially from France, Germany and Italy. This period also saw the emergence of an English literary culture, the most famous writer being William Shakespeare, who added many words and phrases to English. (See ‘Shakespeare’ PowerPoint.)

Old English (450-1100 AD)
Part of Beowulf《贝奥武甫》 , a poem written in Old English. The invading Germanic tribes spoke similar languages, which in Britain developed into what we now call Old English. Old English did not sound or look like English today. Native English speakers now would have great difficulty understanding Old English. Nevertheless, about half of the most commonly used words in Modern English have Old English roots. The words be, strong and water, for example, derive from Old English. Old English was spoken until around 1100.
History of the English Language
The very beginning of English
The development of the English language can date back to as far as 500BC.According to historical record ,the earliest language used in Great Britain is Celtic. In 55 BC , the Roman conquered the Great Britain and had ruled there for more than 500 years , creating an opportunity for Latin to find its way into Britain and gradually take the place of Celtic as the official language.

Middle English (1100-1500)
In 1066 William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy (part of modern France), invaded and conquered England. The new conquerors (called the Normans) brought with them a kind of French, which became the language of the Royal Court, and the ruling and business classes. For a period there was a kind of linguistic class division, where the lower classes spoke English and the upper classes spoke French. In the 14th century English became dominant in Britain again, but with many French words added. This language is called Middle English. It was the language of the great poet Chaucer (c1340-1400), but it would still be difficult for native English speakers to understand today.
Celtic
Latin
The history of the English language really started with the arrival of three Germanic tribes who invaded Britain during the 5th century AD. These tribes, the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes, crossed the North Sea from what today is Denmark and northern Germany. At that time the inhabitants of Britain spoke a Celtic language. But most of the Celtic speakers were pushed west and north by the invaders - mainly into what is now Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The Angles came from England and their language was called Englisc from which the words England and English are derived. Germanic invaders entered Britain on the east and south coasts in the 5th century.
