A

When I was a kid, my siblings(兄弟姐妹) and I used to have ice cream for dessert. Every day, we would choose which ice cream flavor to have. Then we would happily wolf down our ice cream as fast as we could.

Once when I was probably about 10 or 11, our grandpa came to visit. Grandpa always had a different view on things. At that time, my sister and I were making bets as to who could finish their ice cream first. With a smile, Grandpa sa id, “Why would you want to finish first? If you eat slowly, it will last longer. You should have a competition to see who can finish last.” Even now, I always try to taste my ice cream, but of course this is about more than just dessert.

Too often, kids want to scramble(争夺) for more, whether it's more ice cream, more toys, or more friends. This habit persists into our adult years. We never develop the skill of treasuring what we have. If we learn to recognize this pattern and change it, we will have a happier life.

What my grandpa taught me that day was really that if you take the chance to enjoy what's in front you, the pleasure will last longer. It's a lesson that, I think, has made my adult life happier, as well. These days, when I want something, I wait as long as I can before I allow myself to have it. Then, when I finally get it, I make sure to treasure it as long as possible, because I know that, no matter what it is, it will be gone all too soon.

Every kid wishes to be an adult. Do you remember playing house as a child — pretending(假装)to be a grown-up like your parents? Did you imagine you were a doctor, a soldier or a teacher? At that time, anything seemed more exciting than being young.

But now as grown-ups, some adults find they cannot leave childhood behind. They become “kidults”. Being a kidult has become a lifestyle choice among young people across Asia.

Some kidults collect toys they once played with. Hello Kitty, Garfield, and Snoopy have many adult fans around the world. It is not unusual to see a 20-something woman with a big, Garfield-shaped cushion on her sofa or a Hello Kitty mobile phone accessory(配件、附件).

Other kidults still enjoy children's stories and fairy tales. For example, the British publisher Bloomsbury even released an edition(发布一个版本) of the Harry Potter novels with an adult cover. That way, no one else on the subway will know that an adult is actually reading a children's book.

“K idults can be like vitamins to society. Adults who love their childhood most and hold on to pure, child-like emotion may be needed in such a rough and dry society,” said Lee So-jung, a professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.

He added that kidult culture may fill the generation gap between adults and kids. It could give

children and their parents books, movies, and cartoon shows to enjoy together.

Tim Greenhalgh, an adviser in London explained that some kidults just refuse to grow up. They hold on to childhood because working life in a busy and stressful city frightens them. Kidults would like to forget their age and openly show their fear of society and adulthood.

“So, they can escape from increasingly busy and stressful lives that are hard to deal with,” Greenhalgh said.

(1)Why does a kid wish to be an adult?

A. Because he wants to be independent(独立).

B. Because he doesn't want to be controlled by adults.

C. Because he wants to experience the real world.

D. Because he believes there will be more exciting life ahead.

(2)What can we infer(推断) from the passage?

A. Some kidults refuse to grow up.

B. Some kidults in Britain like reading on the subway.

C. Some kidults think childhood is the best time of their life.

D. Some kidults want to escape from the busy and stressful life

(3)One of the advantages of the kidult culture is that ______.

A. it can make adults face the real social life

B. it can make our society young and full of life

C. it can increase the sales of children's books

D. it can lead to harmonious(和谐的)relationship between adults and kids

(4)Which of the following is the best title for the article?

A. Kids or Grown-ups

B. Happy Childhood

C. Fearful Adulthood

D. Kidult Culture

I grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of. In fact, I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing and books unbelievably powerful in shaping perspectives( 观点 ) by creating worlds we could step into, take part in and live in.

With this belief, I, at fourteen, decided to become a writer. Here too, reading became useful. Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it. He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with. He cannot write without loving to read, because only through reading other people's writing can one discover what works, what doesn't and, in the end, together with lots of practice, what voice he has.

Now I am in college, and have come to realize how important it is to read books. Reading reminds me that there is life beyond my own. It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn't necessarily be able to have in my lifetime.

(1)What can be inferred about the author as a child?

A. He never watched TV.

B. He found reading unbelievable.

C. He considered reading part of his life.

D. He read what he had to.

(2)The underlined word “voice” in the second paragraph most probably means “________”.

A. a belief

B. a way of writing

C. a sound quality

D. a world to write about (3)What effect does reading have on the author?

A. It opens up a wider world for him.

B. It helps him to realize his dream.

C. It makes his college life more interesting.

D. It increases his interest in worldwide travel.(4)Which of the following can be the best title of this text?

A. How do I read?

B. What do I read?

C. Why do I read?

D. When do I read?

【答案】(1)C

(2)B

(3)A

(4)C

I grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of. In fact, I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing可知,作者从小生活在一个很少开电视,却有很多书的家庭里,他童年的大多数时候都是在读书中度过的,他觉得读书就像呼吸一样的自然。

Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it. He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with.

Reading reminds me that there is life beyond my own. It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn't necessarily be able to have in my lifetime可知,阅读对于作者来说是非常重要的,它可带着作者穿过海洋,沿着丝绸之路,去体验令人激动的经历,这些经历可能在作者的一生中不会拥有的。 故选A

Have you ever wanted to achieve a goal and ended up doing lots of research on how to achieve it? As you learned more and more. It seemed you knew less and less. That is because when you learned a new concept(概念). You found that there was a lot more to know about it.

Usually, people think they need to get more and more information before trying a new idea. There is nothing wrong with learning a lot, but when you let learning get in the way of doing, you will never get going.

One of the best ways to learn is to take action and learn from the results that you get from those actions. Don't be afraid of not being perfect and just take the first step. You will go further than those who are still in preparation. It's good to be prepared, but over-preparation in trying to reach a goal won't get you results. The knowledge and skills that you will need will be picked up along the way.

If a baby wants to learn how to walk, it doesn't do it by just sitting there and thinking about how to walk. The best way for a baby to walk is to actually get up and start walking. Sure it may fall, but with every fall, it learns what is working and what is not and adjusts(调整)to it. By doing this over and over, it will finally learn to walk. This is the method you should use when you want to achieve your goals as well. It works.

Learning more is great but if all you're doing is learning and not taking action, it's time to change that. Just take the first step.

I was 15 months old, a happy and carefree kid, until the day I fell. It was a bad fall. I landed on a piece of glass that cut my eye badly. From then on, my injured, sightless, cloudy gray eye lived on with me.

Sometimes people asked me embarrassing (使人难堪的) questions. Whenever kids played games, I was the "monster". I was always imagining that everyone looked down on(瞧不起) me. Yet mum would say to me, "Hold your head up high and face the world." I began to depend on that saying. As a child, I thought mum meant, "Be careful,or you will fall down or bump into something because you are not looking. "As a teenager, I usually looked down to hide my shame. But I found that when I held my head up high, people liked me.

In high school, I even became the class president, but inside I still felt like a monster. All I really wanted was to look like everyone else. When things got really bad, I would cry to my mum and she would look at me with loving eyes and say," Hold your head up high and face the world. Let them see the beauty that is inside instead of your appearance(外貌) ."

My mum's love was the sunshine that made me bright. I had faced hard times, and learned not only to be confident(自信的) but also to have deep compassion(同情) for others. "Hold your head up high "has been heard many times in my home. I say it to my children. The gift my mum gave me will live on.

According to a 5-year study at the UCLA School of Medicine in California, with laughing there is less stress in the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 40%. So what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to find out. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest, I wasn't interested in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha.” while looking at each other. However, our bodies can't tell the difference between real laughter and unreal laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects. Surprisingly, it worked! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real and some people just couldn't stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed-and comfortable I felt. So if you're under stress, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with the results! (1)The first Laughter Club was started in __________. A. India B. America C. Britain D.

English is an important international language, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to learn. Many experts have tried to make English easier to learn —but they weren’t always successful. In 1930, Professor C.K. Ogden of Cambridge University invented Basic English. It had only 850 words (and just eighteen verbs) and Ogden said most people could learn it in just thirty hours. The problem was that people who learned Basic English could write and say simple messages, but they couldn’t understand the answers in ‘real’ English! It was also impossible to explain a word if it wasn’t in the Basic English word list. R.E. Zachrisson, a university professor in Sweden, decided that the biggest problem for learners of English was spelling, so he invented a language with the name Anglic. Anglic was similar to English, but with much simpler spelling. ‘Father’ became ‘faadher’, ‘new’ became ‘nue’ and ‘years’ became ‘yeerz’. Unluckily, Anglic never became p opular. In the age of international communication through the Internet, who knows what will happen? ... a new form of English might appear. A large

What do you see when you look at abstract (抽象的)art? Can you understand it? Does it look like anything? Abstract art became popular in the early 20th century. Artists did not want to paint, draw, or sculpt things exactly like they looked. They didn't want their art to be realistic(现实的). They were more interested in basic shapes and colours. Picasso is probably the most famous of these artists. He painted and drew in many, many styles. Sometimes he used a lot of blue colours (his "blue period"). Later, he used more red and pink colours (his "rose period"). Many of his other paintings are called "cubist (立体派的)" because they are made of painted squares. After a long time, Picasso's paintings became more and more abstract. He painted people and things using strange shapes. His work was so strange that many of his workmates didn't understand it. Kandinsky, another famous artist, used lines, shapes, and patterns to paint his subjects. His paintings also used strong colours to express feelings. Other artists like the surrealists (超现实主义画家),were interested in subconsciousness (潜意识). Painters like Breton and Magritte used many symbols in their work. The meaning or subject of their work wasn't always clear. Dali, another surrealist artist, painted pictures that looked like dreams. There are still many abstract artists around the world. That's the way many artists prefer. They want each person to look at art and find their own meaning in it. (1)Which would be most like abstract art? A. A painting of a house. B. A sculpture of a car.
