阅读短文并回答问题Seagrass meadows(海草床)are wonder plants growing beneath the sea. They feed and shelter sea life and are masterful at storing carbon. Thanks to the assistance of tiger sharks, a huge seagrass meadow in the Bahamas Banks was recently discovered, offering the world a tool to fight climate change.Seagrass has usually been detected by Earth-orbiting satellites that identify darker patches in the blue water. In this study, tiger sharks were selected as research tools due to their highly consistent associations with seagrass ecosystems. They spend 70% of their time in seagrass meadows. The team equipped eight tiger sharks with satellite tags, seven sharks with camera tags, and used a 360-degree camera on a shark for the first time ever. The data researchers collected was astonishing. The world’s largest seagrass ecosystem, measuring at least 66,900 square kilometers, has been discovered. This reflects a 41% increase from previous estimates of global seagrass. Seagrass can capture(捕获)huge quantities of carbon by photosynthesis and stores it on the seafloor. In terms of climate change, this is excellent news; seagrass is 35 times faster at removing carbon than tropical rainforests. When referred to global seagrass carbon stock estimates, the study indicates that seagrass in the Bahamas may contain 19.2% to 26.3% of all the carbon stored in seagrass meadows on Earth.Yet seagrass meadows are rapidly disappearing, with over 92% of meadows in the UK gone, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Scientists are collecting seeds and trying to grow new seagrass meadows through restoration projects. This new discovery offers optimism and proves the importance of the ocean for healing. The sharks led us to the seagrass ecosystem in the Bahamas, which we now know is likely the most significant blue carbon sink on the planet. What this discovery shows us is that ocean exploration and research are essential for a healthy future. The untapped potential of the ocean is limitless. These meadows can be protected and can be replicated, offering hope for climate change around the globe.1. Why were tiger sharks chosen as research toolsA. They are more flexible than other sea animals.B. They can quickly adjust themselves to the deep sea.C. They can be easily equipped with experimental devices.D. They have a strong connection with seagrass ecosystems.2. What are the numbers in paragraph 3 mainly aboutA. The decline of global seagrass meadows.B. The impact of climate change on sea life.C. The rapid increase in the amount of carbon on Earth.D. The potential value of the world’s largest seagrass ecosystem.3. What are scientists doing to protect seagrassA. Planting more seagrass meadows.B. Developing new technology to collect seeds.C. Mapping the distribution of seagrass meadows.D. Encouraging people to join in restoration projects.4. Which could be the best title for the textA. The New Way of Removing CarbonB. The Significance of Ocean ExplorationC. A New Discovery: World’s Largest Seagrass MeadowD. Tiger Sharks: Scientists’ Essential Helper to Study Climate答案:DDAC阅读短文并回答问题The topic of China’s “slash youth” has fueled heated debate on social media recently, drawing attention to the diverse pursuits of the younger generation. The slash youth, which could also be called slashers or slash-generation — means those who refuse to be defined or bound by just one personal identity. They are keen to present themselves as multiple and sometimes distinct identities, such as a nurse and model, a teacher and stand-up comedian, and an engineer and band player. Rather than material comforts, they pursue meaningful achievement.A diverse career can enable them to develop new experiences and talents as well as social and professional networks, leading to greater flexibility in life and work, recognition and satisfaction.A study on “slash youth” published in the China Youth Research magazine analyzes the background of this phenomenon: with part of modern society’s structured organization and stability norms(规范)are broken, flexible labor markets and structural unemployment has emerged, eliminating the sense of job security of the young people in employment. Young people also face the dilemma of self-actualization(自我实现), including the sense of powerlessness, lost sense of value and lack of self-identity in the profession, which forces them to re-find the meaning of work.“The ‘slash life’ shows that our society is becoming more and more diversified and inclusive, and it welcomes everyone’s self-fulfillment,” said Shi Yanrong, an associate researcher from Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences. “Young people no longer have to rely on work and money for their sense of self-worth. They tend to create their own identities.” The researcher added that against the background that people have multiple interests and are willing to pay for these interests nowadays, the “slash life” of the youth would drive the growth of a new economy, just as animation(动漫)culture affected the market.1. What do we know about the slash youthA. They tend to undertake multiple careers.B. They are keen to pursue material comforts.C. They enjoy posting themselves on social media.D. They can easily adjust themselves to challenges in life.2. What is paragraph 4 mainly aboutA. The importance of flexible labor markets.B. Reasons for the emergence of slash youth.C. Young people’s pursuits in their profession.D. Causes of losing self-identity among the youth.3. What does Shi Yanrong think of the slash lifeA. It can raise the economic growth.B. It helps increase people’s independence.C. It inspires young people’s creativity at work.D. It enables young people to earn high incomes.4. What is the purpose of the textA. To provide career guidance.B. To analyze a cultural difference.C. To introduce a social phenomenon.D. To share a unique life experience.答案:ABAC阅读短文并回答问题What’s the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of wheat straw Most people would probably just see it as a pile of waste in a farmer’s field. However, Wu Cui, an intangible cultural inheritor, can turn the straw left over from harvested wheat into beautiful and eye-catching functional artworks. The earliest straw-weaving(草编的)products were discovered at Hemudu Cultural Ruins, a Neolithic cultural site located in eastern China’s Zhejiang province. The Book of Rites, one of the classical works of Confucianism, also records that there were already mats made of cattail grass and professional straw-weaving craftsmen during the Zhou Dynasty (c.11th century-256 BC).Straw weaving is a method of manufacturing daily items or artworks. It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.Wu explains the process of straw weaving: selection of materials is the first step of a complicated, time-consuming and labor-intensive process that can take weeks, or even months, to complete. You need to sketch(素描)the piece on paper, which requires drawing skills. Next comes weaving, shaping and preserving of the work. Even by finishing that process, it does not mean that you will always create a good piece of work, and the hardest part is to make it lifelike. In the past, woven straw items could be found almost in every household in the countryside, such as straw hats and straw shoes, because they were practical in everyday life. But due to the impact of industrialization, manufactured goods have replaced such products, which yield low profits, and there are only about 100 individuals engaging in the work across the country. “The world has changed, and craftsmen need to transcend practicality and pursue the beauty and artistry of straw culture to help the craft survive and thrive,” Wu says. From her perspective, straw weaving should respond to people’s needs and preferences, while still drawing inspiration from traditional culture. “Craftspeople should make a great effort to grasp the trends and opportunities of the times to create new and relevant products,” she says. When asked about her plans, Wu says she wants to dig deeper into local traditional culture and create cultural creative products by developing the straw-weaving technique.1. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about straw-weaving productsA. Their major uses.B. Their cultural value.C. Their historic origins.D. Their manufacturing process.2. Which is the most difficult part for straw-weaving craftsmen according to Wu CuiA. Making the artworks vivid.B. Drawing sketches on paper.C. Selecting suitable materials.D. Preserving finished products.3. What does the underlined word “transcend” in paragraph 5 probably meanA. Rely on.B. Turn to.C. Cast away.D. Go beyond.4. What can we learn from Wu Cui’s opinion according to the last paragraphA. Straw-weaving products are out of favor with customers.B. Pursuing fashion should be the first priority for craftspeople.C. Local people benefit a lot from the straw-weaving techniques.D. Craftsmen should innovate the craft based on traditional culture.参考答案:CADD阅读短文并回答问题Not all fat is created equal, according to several new studies. We all know there’s good cholesterol(胆固醇)and bad cholesterol. It turns out there’s good and bad fat, too. Good fat is medically known as “brown fat”.Brown fat, typically found in the neck and shoulders of newborns, has the ability to burn lots of calories, which serves the purpose of keeping them warm. It makes up about 5 percent of an infant’s total body mass. We lose most of our brown fat as we age. By age six, we have less than 5 percent of the brown fat we were born with; the fat we gain over time is almost all white fat.Researchers now believe that some people maintain brown fat deposits into adulthood. Brown fat — the “good” kind — is metabolically(新陈代谢地)efficient and actually burns excess energy to generate heat. But white fat — considered the “bad” kind — is a way for your body to store excess energy that accumulates when you consume more calories than you use. It is widely distributed throughout the body. And it doesn’t use much energy, is hard to burn off, accumulates, and causes other health problems. Some studies suggest that taking a cold shower or an ice bath could activate(激活)brown fat to help your body burn more calories. Researchers have also found methods that may help people gain brown fat without the need for cold. You build fat from the foods you eat. As brown fat is rich in iron, choosing iron supplements or food items rich in iron can keep your fat cells healthy. Nutrition is vital for your health, especially if you want to increase brown fat production. One of the major causes of shortened life spans and the growth in chronic illnesses like osteoarthritis, diabetes, and many cancers is the increasing level of white fat. Though converting existing white fat into brown fat is helpful to increase brown fat, some scientists think they will learn how to keep stores of brown fat as large and active throughout adulthood as they are in infancy: The goal should be to maintain brown fat forever rather than having to recreate it.1. Who has more brown fat according to the textA. A teenage girl.B. A college student.C. A new-born baby.D. An elderly professor.2. How is brown fat different from white fatA. It can help prevent health problems.B. It burns calories with higher efficiency.C. It is distributed in the neck and shoulders.D. It stores excess energy in the human body.3. What is paragraph 4 mainly aboutA. Ways of increasing the amount of brown fat.B. The significance of keeping fat cells healthy.C. The key role of nutrition in brown fat production.D. Effects of the temperature on activating brown fat.4. What do scientists expect to figure outA. How to recreate more brown fat.B. How to turn white fat into brown fat.C. How to evaluate the risks of white fat.D. How to maintain the early level of brown fat.参考答案:CBAD。

专题限时训练(三十六) [社会生活型阅读理解(一)](限时:25分钟)(一)I've spent over a year in India, and in those 365 plus days, I've learned a lot about getting around Indian cities. My biggest lessons have been learned through being cheated, particularly by taxi and rickshaw (人力车) drivers, but that doesn't mean those are bad ways to travel, as long as you know what you're doing. Below are the best ways to get around the city of Delhi, India, and tips for how to keep from being the victim of scams (欺诈).Taking taxis is a great way to get around the city of Delhi and chances are, if you arrive in Delhi by plane, as soon as you make it through customs, you'll be swarmed by Indian taxi drivers. At the Delhi airport, be sure to arrange for a taxi to your hotel at one of the two Delhi Traffic Police Taxi Booths. One is inside the airport, and one is outside. The key is to make sure to go to a booth run by the police, rather than by independent taxi drivers.Rickshaws are one of my favourite ways to get around Indian cities, in part because it's how the locals often travel. Autorickshaws are more common, but bicycle rickshaws are still used in Old Delhi. If you do have a chance to take a bicycle rickshaw, you should do it at least once for a unique experience that should only set you back about 15 rupees. Autorickshaw rates around Delhi range between 30 and 80 rupees, depending on the distance. If you really want to travel around Delhi like the locals, take a public bus. Indian buses become very crowded and most do not have air conditioning. They are, however, very cheap. A bus trip won't set you back any more than 15 rupees, as long as you stay within the city limits. Since Indian buses get so crowded, try to board the bus at the start of the route so you can get a seat. The train is a great way to get around within the city of Delhi. Fares are reasonable, between 6 and 22 rupees. All departure announcements are in both Hindi and English, and tokens can be purchased for between 6 and 22 rupees.1.The author is trying to ________ in Delhi through this text.A.give some advice of travellingB.expect us to travel aroundC.show his/her experiencesD.explain the difficulties of travelling2.To avoid being cheated, you ought to ________ if you want to take a taxi at the Delhi airport.A.pay more to the drivers to keep safeB.show your ticket to the driverC.go to a policerun boothD.go out of the airport3.The author suggests taking a rickshaw in order to ________.A.save some moneyB.enjoy the comfortable tripC.gain a unique experienceD.help the local rickshaw drivers4.What can we infer from the passage?A.You won't have to pay much if you travel around by bus in India.B.It will be difficult for you to get a seat if you get on the bus halfway.C.A rickshaw driver only charges whatever amount you give him.D.You'll have to speak English if you travel around in India.5.Which may be the topic that follows?A.Hotel recommendations in Delhi.B.Weather conditions in Delhi.C.Food and drink in Delhi.D.Car rentals in Delhi.(二)Life is to be enjoyed. There's no point in giving up something you enjoy unless you get something back that's even better. When people eat more healthfully, exercise, quit smoking, and manage stress better, they find that they feel so much better that it reconstructs the reason for making these changes from fear of dying to joy of living. The latest studies show that when you exercise and eat right:YOUR BRAIN receives more blood flow and oxygen, so you become smarter, think more clearly, have more energy, and need less sleep. Two studies showed that just walking for three hours per week for only three months caused so many new neurons (神经细胞) to grow that it actually increased the size of people's brains!YOUR FACE receives more blood flow, so your_skin_glows more and wrinkles less. You look younger and more attractive. In contrast, an unhealthy diet, chronic emotional stress and smoking reduce blood flow to your face so you age more quickly. Smoking accelerates aging because nicotine causes your arteries (动脉) to narrow down, which decreases blood flow to your face and makes it wrinkle earlier. This is why smokers look years older than they really are.YOUR GENES change. In May, a study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showing that changing your lifestyle changes your genes.YOUR TELOMERES (染色体端粒) get longer. Telomeres are the ends of our chromosomes (染色体) that control how long we live. As telomeres become shorter, then cells age more quickly, thus shortening our lives.Besides, one of the most interesting findings in the study was that the mothers' awareness of stress was more important than what was really occurring in their lives. The researchers gave the women a questionnaire and asked them to rate on a threepoint scale how stressed they felt each day, and how out of control their lives felt to them. The women who were aware that they were under heavy stress had significantly shortened and damaged telomeres compared with those who felt more relaxed. On the contrary, some of the women who felt relaxed despite raising a disabled child had more normalappearing telomeres. In other words, if you feel stressed, you are stressed; if you feel fine, you are fine.1.Which of the following are good for lengthening one's life, according to the passage?① eat healthy food ② drink plenty of water ③ take exercise ④ get up early ⑤ go to sleep early ⑥ release one's stressA.①③⑥B.①②③C.①⑤⑥D.③④⑥2.The underlined words “your skin glows” in Paragraph 3 are closest in meaning to “________”.A.your skin becomes white as there is plenty of sunshineB.your skin becomes smooth as there is much blood in itC.your skin looks pink as you are healthyD.your skin becomes soft as you exercise enough3.In the author's opinion, when you exercise and eat right, you will experience some changes EXCEPT ________.A.brains becoming clevererB.faces having fewer wrinklesC.arteries turning narrowerD.genes being changed4.From the last but one paragraph we learn that ________.A.mothers will have more damaged telomeres if they raise a disabled child B.mothers don't know how to handle stress effectivelyC.some women were asked to fill out a questionnaire about educating children D.mothers' positive attitudes are the key to managing their stress5.The best title for the passage would be “________”.A.Eat better, live betterB.Feel better, live longerC.Less stress, fewer diseasesD.Smoke more, age sooner(三)Online shoppers would rather receive an offer for a product or service than make their own offers according to a study led by a Michigan State University scholar that has implications for the fastgrowing ecommerce industry. The findings may come as a surprise that shopping online is an anonymous(匿名的)process that seemingly can give consumers more confidence to drive a hard bargain, said Don Conlon, professor of Management in MSU's Broad College of Business. But the study found that participants who made their own offers were less successful in sealing the deal and, when they were successful, worried they overpaid. Many shoppers found the process of researching an offer to be a hassle. “Americans are very busy, and it's less timeconsuming to be the one receiving the offer ratherthan the one proposing the offer,” Conlon said. “People tend to be happier when they're in the receiver role. ”Online spending in the United States is expected to jump 45 percent in the next three years, from $ 226 billion this year to $ 327 billion in 2017,according to Forrester Research Inc. Nevertheless, researches into this prosperous market remain largely focused on the strategies of companies, rather than those shoppers. Conlon's study is,obviously, a rare exception.Conlon got the idea for the study after considering the difference between two popular sites for hotels and airline flights, , which takes bids, and ,which provides offers. Using these two models,Conlon and his fellow researchers conducted a series of experiments with more than 850 people who were charged with booking a fictional hotel room and acquiring a fictional antique car. Not only did participants prefer to receive bids, Conlon said, but they also secured more deals in that receiver role. Further when they had to make the bids, they were left more mentally taxed and regretful. From an industry perspective, putting customers in the receiver role may help fill more hotel rooms and airplane seats. “If you're a business with a lot of products,” Conlon said,“you may want to be the one making the offers. ” However, when selling single items, such as an antique car, accepting bids may be a better option since that typically drives up the price, he said.1.What can we learn from Para. 1?A.The result of the study gives customers more confidence.B.Scholars aren't surprised at the findings of the study.C.Online shoppers don't bargain as much as expected.D.Ecommerce industry drives more hard bargains.2.It can be concluded from Conlon's experiments that________.A.online shopping is timeconsumingB.given prices help promote online salesC.online businesses provide a lot of productsD.receiving offers makes online shoppers regretful3.The underlined word “taxed” in Para. 4 probably means “________”.A.burdened B.numbedC.relieved D.challenged4.The passage is mainly about________.A.the big advantages of online shoppingB.the rapid development of online shoppingC.online shoppers' preferences for taking offersD.online companies' strategies to improve service专题限时训练(三十六)(一)【要点综述】本文作者就在印度德里旅行时的交通方面提出了几点建议。

However, I did love to run because I felt as if I was flying but this all changed two years ago when I suffered a knee injury. I was bedridden for two weeks and I had a difficult time moving even short distances. I literally cried myself on my way to the car for a few days. When therapy wasn't working well for me, I signed up for a hot yoga class for girls, Bikram Yoga to be exact. Starting a yoga practice was truly a godsend because it helped me gain strength in my knees but, most importantly, yoga helped me attain a more peaceful state of mind, body and spirit.Since each class was heated to 105°F, every time I stepped foot in the yoga studio, I'd feel a surge(涌起) of negative thoughts come upon me like a big ocean wave. Some of these thoughts were, in the beginning of my practice, so strong that I walked out of the class several times. However, as the months passed by, I noticed that when I didn't get swayed away by my negative thoughts, I could stay in the hot room for longer. After 34 months of practicing hot yoga, my arms and legs were beginning to get definition. I also woke up with so much more energy than I had before starting my yoga practice and I gradually started shedding the pounds from my body. Yoga literally made me feel as if I'd taken a shot of energy drink and just gave me that burst that helped my knees heal and made my overall health better. As I saw some of my classmates do poses that looked appealing to me, I started to think maybe I could do them too. Therefore, yoga helped show me that I have no real limitations physically unless I set those limitations myself through eating junk and thinking in negative limiting terms. Also, practicing yoga in front of a mirror helped me connect with myself and practicing with a group of people really helped me to feel a greater sense of connection with humanity whereas before I didn't. Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I'm part of a bigger picture in life!4.What made the author sign up for the yoga class?A.Her currently disabled knee.B.Her being uncoordinated.C.Her failure to find her car.D.Her serious mental disease.5.What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 3?A.Lack of confidence prevented her doing yoga.B.The temperature was difficult to bear in yoga classes.C.She couldn't stand the pain the knee injury brought.D.She was greatly impacted by negative thoughts at first.6.What effect did yoga have on the author?A.She did better than her classmates at school.B.Her physical and mental states have improved a lot.C.She has developed many healthy eating habits.D.Her social circle was widened in the yoga classes.7.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?A.To share her experience in taking yoga classes.B.To call on readers to sign up for yoga courses.C.To present the benefits of practicing yoga regularly.D.To show readers the necessary skills needed to do yoga.CAnimal and plant species are disappearing at frightening rates. The problem has led to efforts to “rewild” places where such life existed before human development, pollution and climate change forced it out. The American city of Detroit is an example of how human actions can increase rewilding, which generally means helping natural systems in damaged locations, removing dams or building tunnels to reconnect animal pathways cut by roads.Detroit's population reached a high of 1.8 million in the 1950s. Then the population began dropping. By 2000, there were fewer than one million people living in the city. Thousands of houses and other buildings were left empty over the years. Some structures were destroyed, leaving empty areas that plants and animals regained as habitats. Nonprofit groups have also planted trees and community gardens in these areas. Bald eagles found their way back as bans on DDT and some other insect poisons were put in place nationwide. Antipollution laws and governmentsupported cleanups made nearby rivers better for fish and native plants. Now, Detroit is home to 300 bird species and is a busy visiting place for ducks and others during migration. Additionally, this city offers a special way to study plants and animals in urban settings. Unlike most big cities, its population is decreasing but its streets and buildings remain in place. And there are many kinds of habitats, including large lakes, rivers and human neighborhoods. Detroit's parklands are so quiet that people don't even know they're in the city.“It used to be that you had to go to some remote location to get exposure to nature,” said John Hartig, a professor of University of Windsor. “Now that's not the case. Like it or not, rewilding will occur. The question is how we can prepare communities and environments to anticipate the presence of more and more wildlife. After all, many city people have lost their tolerance to live with wildlife. To really make a difference in dealing with the biodiversity crisis, you're going to have to have people on board.”8.What might have happened in Detroit at the beginning of 21st century?A.The city was overpopulated.B.More community gardens were built.C.Many buildings were deserted.D.The environment was badly damaged.9.What does the example of Detroit mainly tell us?A.It's governmentsupported efforts that really matter.B.Humans' efforts can make a difference in rewilding.C.Humans are to blame for the worsening environment.D.It's hard to humans and wildlife to live in harmony.10.What can we infer about current Detroit from the text?A.It is a big city crowded with tourists and bird species.B.Tourists don't show any interest in the quiet surroundings.C.It's turned into a place where people can get close to nature.D.It's become a center for those who study animals and plants.11.What does the underlined word “anticipate” in the last paragraph mean?A.Protect. B.Expect.C.Imagine. D.Delay.DThe Front Porch Center for Innovation and Wellbeing (FPCIW) launched a Bear Robotics ‘Servi’ pilot in June 2022 to help ease the challenges for senior dining services. In senior care, difficult as having a major change can be, the FPCIW took strategic steps to maximize the chances of the robotics pilot being a success. Davis Park, vice president at FPCIW, feels the pilot's success was largely due to the predeployment conversations and focus group discussions held. “We strongly believe that a little investment in the groundwork can make all the difference in a successful or failed technology project in senior living communities,” he says.Clear, open, and honest conversation around the pilot helped to prepare staff and residents for the robots' introduction. “Change is always hard,” says Park. “The open discus sions we had weeks in advance were helpful to make sure residents and staff felt heard about concerns they had about how ‘the robots are taking over’ or ‘this is going to take my job away.’” He notes that the FPCIW worked to reach out directly to those individuals who disagree or feel uncomfortable and to understand their pain points. The focus on deliberate and clear messaging also helped to address concerns surrounding the pilot. Messaging was delivered in person as early as eight weeks before the robots were introduced to the community dining rooms. Multiple open forums leading up to the “golive” kickoff created the opportunity to answer questions and address concerns. “We also distributed digital and physical copies of flyers and letters to all residents. And with that, we were able to head off many of the concerns and worries before they became problems and barriers to adoption.”When it comes to using robots in dining services, Park has a word for senior care operators. “Listen. Make sure to create the time and space for residents and staff to air their concerns, and also be prepared for those who may not be ready,” he says. “And just as importantly, if not more: Make it fun! During our golive event, we covered the dining room with robotthemed decorat ions and had the robots pass out robotthemed candies and champagne (香槟).”12.What is the key to the pilot's being successful?A.Putting in much time.B.Investing massive money.C.Providing chances of research maximally.D.Having sufficient communications beforehand.13.Why do some people object to the pilot?A.They find robots unfriendly.B.They fear their unemployment.C.They consider robots unreliable.D.They think the robot hard to operate.14.What's Paragraph 3 mainly about?A.Concerns on the pilot.B.Ways of delivering messages.C.Means of writing letters to residents.D.Barriers to accepting the dining robots.15.What's Park's advice for operators?A.To be sociable and grateful.B.To be cautious and generous.C.To be tolerant and optimistic.D.To be patient and considerate.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

专题限时训练(三十四) [史地自然型阅读理解(一)](限时:25分钟)(一)The Pacific island nation of Nauru used to be a beautiful place. Now it is an ecological disaster area.Nauru's heartbreaking story could have one good consequence—other countries might learn from its mistakes. For thousands of years,Polynesian people lived in the remote island of Nauru, far from western civilization. The first European to arrive was John Fearn in 1798.He was the British captain of the Hunter, a whaling ship.He called the island Pleasant Island. However, because it was very remote, Nauru had little communication with Europeans at first. The whaling ships and other traders began to visit, bringing guns and alcohol. These elements destroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the island.A tenyear civil war started, which reduced the population from 1,400 to 900.Nauru's real troubles began in 1899 when a British mining company discovered phosphate(磷酸盐)on the island. In fact,it found that the island of Nauru was nearly all phosphate, which was a very important fertilizer for farming. The company began mining the phosphate.A phosphate mine was not a hole in the ground;it was a strip mine. When a company stripmined,it removed the top layer of soil. Then it took away the material it wanted.Strip mining totally destroyed the land.Gradually, the lovely island of Nauru started to look like the moon.In 1968,Nauru became one of the richest countries in the world.Every year the government received millions and millions of dollars for its phosphate.Unfortunately, the leaders invested the money unwisely and lost millions of dollars. In addition, they used millions more dollars for personal expenses.Soon people realized that they had a terrible problem—their phosphate was running out.Ninety percent of their island was destroyed and they had nothing.By 2000,Nauru was financially ruined.Experts say that it would take approximately$433,600,000 and more than 20 years to repair the island. This will probably never happen.1.What might be the author's purpose in writing the text?A.To seek help for Nauru's problems.B.To give a warning to other countries.C.To show the importance of money.D.To tell a heartbreaking story of a war.2.What was Nauru like before the Europeans came?A.Rich and powerful.B.Modern and open.C.Peaceful and attractive.D.Greedy and aggressive.3.The ecological disaster in Nauru resulted from________.A.soil pollutionB.phosphate overminingC.farming activityD.whale hunting4.Which of the following was a cause of Nauru's financial problem?A.Its leaders misused the money.B.It spent too much repairing the island.C.Its phosphate mining cost much money.D.It lost millions of dollars in the civil war.5.What can we learn about Nauru from the last paragraph?A.The ecological damage is difficult to repair.B.The leaders will take the experts' words seriously.C.The island was abandoned by the Nauruans.D.The phosphate mines were destroyed.(二)Squirrels often communicate with whistles, chirps and chucks, which sound like the word “chuck”. Whistles and chirps are like the sounds that many birds make. Now scientists have translated some of their squirrelspeak.Hare, a professor of zoology at the University of Maniloha in Winnipeg, and his team managed to record squirrels' alarm calls. The researchers studied the sounds and then played them back to 60 wild squirrels, which the scientists approached individually with a video recorder to capture(抓拍)their responses. Some squirrels lifted their heads up and became alert(警惕的).Creatures that were more frightened simply ran for their lives and dived into caves.“In effect then, whistles that mix with chucks say ‘there's an enemy of average threat that's here’,and whistles without chucks say ‘there's an enemy of seemingly average threat around here somewhere’,while pure chirps say, ‘I'm hiding here because there's an immediate danger.’” Hare told.Hare and some other researchers believe such sounds are part of an advanced language that develops just as all other communication systems.Although squirrels risk their lives when they call out to warn others of threats, other squirrels might admire this behaviour, thus increasingly the caller's social status, like humans who look up to heroes. Hare added that other animals, such as birds, probably understand at least some squirrel language, since they also may benefit from the alarm calls. In fact, another Canadian study found that deepvoiced, blackcapped ch ickadees have their own language, too.According to certain research, there are a lot of tidings in chickadees' calls, such as directing fellows' activities, keeping in contact between mates, and raising alarms. While chickadees and other birds are often welcomed into gardens by homeowners, squirrels are frequently viewed as pests(害兽). Hare wishes a greater understanding of the complex social lives and communication systems of squirrels will provide “hope that humans will gain a greater appreciation and stop doing harm to theseanimals”.1.The text mainly talks about ________.A.the study on the language of squirrelsB.the comparison between squirrels and chickadeesC.the calling for the protection of squirrelsD.the ways for squirrels to escape from their enemies2.If a squirrel is in a very dangerous situation, it would probably make ________.A.whistles with chucksB.pure chirpsC.whistles without chucksD.repeated chucks3.The underlined word “tidings” in Paragraph 6 probably means “________”.A.difficulties B.poisesC.messages D.languages4.What can be learned from this text?A.Squirrels communicate with each other as humans do.B.Some squirrels understand the recorded alarm calls.C.Other animals also well understand the language of squirrels.D.Birds such as chickadees don't have their own language.(三)It's only 4 hours flying time from Sydney, but a world away. nights.I had been able to eat one meal a day due to the surgeries I was scheduled for later.I asked my mum to bring me my car keys and on my key chain there was a soft piece of leather made from my first baseball glove. She looked worried and sad, handing the key chain to me.In the fibres of the leather were so many memories that had transformed me as a person.I grabbed my keys and touched a smooth piece of leather. It was a nice coffee brown and about3 inches in length.Every time I touched it,I would think of one thing—baseball. The key chain was made from my first baseball glove that I interrupt, but I needed more medicine.Once she left,I focused back and grasped the cowhide.I rubbed my fingers up and down just feeling this reminder of the game.It took me on a wild road trip through my brain and I would stop at each baseball memory. This time I began to picture the people that were involved in my baseball life.I opened my eyes, realising the road trip that I used to be on had gone older, giving them something they can experience instead of material things makes them happier, according to a new research led by Chaplin. The research compares the level of happiness children get from material things with that from experiences. The results shows that children aged3through12get more happiness from material things than from experiences. However, older children get more happiness from experiences than from their possessions.“It means experiences are highly preferred by adolescents, not just expensive material things,”Chaplin says. She continues explaining,“Don’t get me wrong.Young children do love experiences. And given this concept, theme parks such as Disneyland are being built everywhere. In fact, young children are excited throughout the experience. However, for experiences to provide lasting happiness, children must be able to recall details of the events.”Long after they have unwrapped their toys, there will still be a physical reminder to give them happiness. However, young children can’t see or touch experiences after they are over, making it harder for them to appreciate experiences after a long time. There’s an easy fix, though, according to Chaplin.“Take pictures or videos of family walks, playing in the snow, and birthday parties,”shesays.“Children are likely to appreciate those experiences more if there is something to remind them of the event.Additionally, they’ll be able to learn the social value of shared experiences.”Children will remember and appreciate not only the birthday gifts they received, but also the time spent with family and friends as they recall the experience through concrete reminders such as photos and videos.Since memory is developed over time,it’s likely that children, especially young ones, may not get as much happiness from past experiences as from possessions. But with age, creating new memories and exploring new interests may be far more valuable than getting possessions.8.Why are theme parks springing up according to Chaplin?A.They can offer children lasting happiness.B.Events in them are centred on specific themes.C.Direct involvement in events there caters to children.D.Kids have an affection for the atmosphere they offer.9.The underlined word“fix”in paragraph4can be replaced by“”.A.solutionB.arrangementC.preparationD.focus10.Which of the following would Chaplin probably agree with?A.Videos appeal to children more than gifts.B.Toys are not kids’cup of tea.C.Older children value family time more than younger ones.D.Physical reminders help remember past experiences better.11.What can be inferred from the passage?A.Experiences are better gifts for older children.B.Social values should be put in the first place.C.New interests are most precious for children.D.Material possessions bring more happiness to children.D(2021·辽宁高三3月联考)Men hunted.Women gathered. That has long been the common view of our prehistoric ancestors. But the discovery of a woman buried about9,000years ago in the Andes Mountains with weapons and hunting tools, and an analysis of other burial sites in the Americas challenges this widely accepted division of labour in hunter-gatherer society.“Labour practices among recent hunter-gatherer societies are highly gendered, which might lead some to believe that sexist inequalities in things like pay or rank are somehow‘natural’,”said Randy Haas, assistant professor of anthropology(人类学)at University of California,Davis.“But it’s now clear that sexual division of labour was fundamentally different—likely more equal and reasonable—in our species deep hunter-gatherer past.”The burial site was discovered in2018during excavations(发掘)at a high-altitude site called Wilamaya Patjxa in what is now Peru. The woman, thought to be between17and19years old when she died, was buried with items that suggested she hunted big-game animals.Although some scholars have suggested a role for women in ancient hunting, others have dismissed this idea even when hunting tools were uncovered in female burials. To examine whether this woman found at this site was an outlier, the researchers examined429skeletons(骷髅)at107burial sites in North and South America around8,000to14,000years ago.Of those,27individuals were buried with hunting tools—11were female and15were male. The sample was sufficient to support the conclusion that female participation in early big-game hunting was likely not unusual. The findings add to doubts about man—the hunter assumption that informed much thinking about early humans since the mid-20th century.“They suggest hunting was very much a community-based activity, needing the participation of all able-bodied individuals to drive large animals”,the researchers said. The weapon of choice at that time had low accuracy, encouraging broad participation, and using it was a skill learned from childhood.12.What does the burial site at Andes Mountains show?A.The origin of sexist inequality.B.The hunting skills of ancient times.C.The social system of prehistoric hunters.D.The job division of hunter-gatherer society.13.Which of the following might Randy Haas agree with?A.Gender plays no part in recent hunter-gatherer society.B.Sexist inequality is a natural result of prehistoric society.C.Ancient division of labour might be fairer than we’d thought.D.Public ideas of women’s role will be changed abruptly.14.What does the underlined word“outlier”in paragraph4mean?A.Exception.B.Failure.C.Role model.D.Easy target.15.What might make prehistoric hunting a community-based activity?ck of able-bodied individuals.B.Imperfection in hunting weapons.C.Better accuracy of females in hunting.D.Need for large animals as food source.Ⅱ.七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)(2021·江苏如皋高三第二次适应性考试)Mixing murals, sculpture and calligraphy, grotto(石窟)temples are historical treasures of ancient Chinese art, values and spirits.Thousands of people flock to grotto temples each year.16 In October, the National Cultural Heritage Administration and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism issued a notice, urging the protection of China’s grotto temples.Grotto temple workers are required to do research and determine how many daily visitors they can safely handle.17Visitors are encouraged to visit at different periods or have virtual experiences related to the cultural heritage sites. These measures are aimed at preserving these relics,as both human and environmental factors have caused harm.Tourists often touch the sculptures, leading to changes in the surface and colour of the figures gradually.18And even the most well-behaved tourists can unknowingly cause harm to the relics. Over many centuries, the ancient rocks that make up these grottoes slowly corrode(腐蚀)due to the acid content of air, water and microorganisms.19According to a study by the China University of Geosciences, the carbon dioxide that visitors breathe out has made the air more acid.At the Mogao Grottoes in Gansu, researchers also found that microorganisms brought in unintentionally by visitors themselves have also led to changes in colour in murals.“20Seeing the grottoes in depth,it will help people better understand Chinese philosophy and humanities from a historical perspective.”a regional director of the Yungang Grottoes Research Academy told China News.A.Preserving these relics is important.B.Yet these relics are threatened by visitors.C.The new rule received support from visitors.D.The light from cameras can also damage the relics.E.The visitors’number should be controlled based on this research.F.But when the grottoes are open to the public, the process speeds up.G.Efforts should also go into advertising the beauty of grotto temples.50分阅读限时满分练(四)【语篇导读】本文是一篇应用文。

专题限时训练(四十) [议论文型阅读填空](限时:25分钟)(一)Four habits to help you succeedWe all want to succeed, whether it's in losing weight or learning the guitar. For those who have tried and failed, success seems difficult to understand. Why does one person succeed where another person fails? 1.________1.Identify your core values.Finding your core values is in line with creating inner motivation. 2.________ Pick a handful of things and actually write them down.Remind yourself of your values every day,and reflect on whether you are honouring those values through your work.2.Pick a goal and focus on it.Choose one goal to start something large enough that will give you a sense of accomplishment, while adjusting well to your core values.Focus is key here.3.________ If you perform many tasks at a time, you might never complete your projects because they will take far too long.3.Set a deadline for success.Set a date for success.Identify when you hope to achieve your goal. 4.________ By setting a time limit, you are making the process more real.4. 5.________Failure can't be avoided when you take risks.By its very definition, the desire to succeed means you are risking failure. Many people tend to give up far too early.Don't fall into this trap!Remember your mindset earlier.Know it will happen.A failure is merely you working out the details, and learning what works and what doesn'e failure.Treat it as a good thing, and march on!A.The more focused you are on one goal, the higher chance you have of success.B.Make the right decision.C.I've made a list of four habits to help you set goals and achieve them.D.Stick to your goal.E.Keep it realistic, while not taking you too much time.F.Sit and reflect on what you value most.G.Push yourself to be courageous, and take that next step.(二)Whenever anyone measures educational success,East Asian countries are always top scorers. But in a recent league table (排名表),a European country, Finland, was top of the class.1.________ Britain was at No. 6. What is the secret of Finland and Korea's success? That's time to do some homework. In Korea the school day is long—typically 7 or 8 hours, followed by hours of private tutoring in the evenings. 2.________ Worries about the effects of late night cramming (填鸭式教学) led the government to force cramming schools to close by 10 pm.Finnish children spend the least time in class in the developed world, often finishing just after lunch, with about one hour of homework a day. Private tuition is uncommon. The British school day is quite long in comparison, about 6 hours, and secondary school pupils do 2 or 3 hours of selfstudy a night. The Korean education system, like many in Asia, is extremely competitive, with students even competing to get into the best cramming schools to get ahead. Finnish education is far less competitive.3.________ British schools again occupy the middle ground, with quite high levels of competition for places at university, and schools and universities battling to come top of league tables for everything from exam results to student satisfaction.Korea and Finland both do well, yet their education systems are so different.4.________Well, there are some similarities in Korea and Finland. In the two countries, teachers have a high status in society, and education is very highly valued. Those attitudes can't change quickly. But it can be done. 5.________ Their quite different approaches to schooling took them to the top in just a generation.A.Then where do their differences lie?B.Korea was still in second place, though.C.So what lessons can Britain learn from these two countries?D.Classes are all mixed ability, and there are no league tables.E.Time devoted to school is the key to Korean students' high scores.F.Finnish children might be the star pupils now, but until the 1970s,Finland's education system was poor.G.All this hard work leaves Korean students tired to fall asleep sometimes in class next day.(三)What is a big dream? 1.________ Or, is a big dream something that provides only entertainment? Children dream big dreams, but there are three barriers to realizing dreams. They often kill them before they ever have a chance to grow. The selfImmediately following the birth of a big dream, a negative selftalk takes over and gives all the reasons why it cannot happen. This inside voice is the ego(自我). It's there for protecting and should be listened to. 2.________ Most people are influenced by the inside voice. That's why only a handful of people make their dreams come true.3.________Family and friends are a lot like the ego. They want to protect those they love, so they will often list all the reasons why the big dreams won't come true. Sometimes, family and friends destroy dreams of those they love most, out of their own fear of being left behind. The worldIf one gets past the first two barriers, one has to face the world. 4.________ In the past, big dreamers were locked up and sometimes even killed when they were shown to the world.Fortunately, in most of the world today, big dreamers just getlaughed at.The way to realize a big dream is with confidence and action. When children have confidence and then take action, they will be ready to accept any failure. The truth is that every great dreamer whose dreams have never seen the light of success knows failure well. 5.________A.Family and friendsB.How big dreams dieC.Does a big dream show one's future?D.They simply fail until they succeed.E.It is the last and the most terrible barrier.F.Sometimes it is right, but more often it is wrong.G.And their big dream is to be a rock star or a famous artist.(四)Every student has tests when they are at school. You may not feel well if your parents are fighting, if a family member is ill, if you are having problems at school, or if you are going through anything else that makes you upset every day. 4.________5.________ That means making good decisions about how to spend your time. If you are only dealing with school stuff and have no time to play, you can get stressed. Make sure you keep your SELF in mind: sleep, exercise, leisure and food. If you take care of yourself and get enough sleep and food, and if you exercise and leave time for fun stuff, you will probably be less stressed out!A.However, there are two different kinds of stress.B.Can you tell a kind of stress from another one?C.The best way to keep stress away is to have a balanced life.D.That kind of stress isn't going to help you, and it can actually make you sick.E.Since bad stress is harmful to us, we'd better try to change it into good stress.F.If so, then you know what stress is. Stress is what you feel when you are worried or uncomfortable about something.G.For example, you may do a better job on your test if the stress pushes you to prepare well before the test.专题限时训练(四十)(一)【要点综述】人人都想成功,但结果却各不相同。

专题限时训练(三十三) [文化教育型阅读理解(二)](限时:25分钟)(一)Human remains of ancient settlements will be reburied and lost to science under a law that threatens research into the history of humans in Britain, a group of leading archeologists (考古学家) say. In a letter addressed to the justice secretary, Ken Clarke, 40 archaeologists write of their “deep and widespread concern” about the issue. It centres on the law introduced by the Ministry of Justice in 2008 which requires all human remains unearthed in England and Wales to be reburied within two years, regardless of their age. The decision means scientists have too little time to study bones and other human remains of national and cultural significance.“Your current requirement that all archaeologically unearthed human remains should be reburied, whether after a standard period of two years or a further special extension, is contrary to basic principles of archaeological and scientific research and of museum practice,” they write. The law applies to any pieces of bone uncovered at around 400 dig sites, including the remains of bodies found at Stonehenge in 2008 that date back to 3,000 BC.Archaeologists have been granted a temporary extension to give them more time, but eventually the bones will have to be returned to the ground. The arrangements may result in the waste of future discoveries at sites such as Happisburgh in Norfolk, where digging is continuing after the discovery of stone tools made by early humans 950,000 years ago. If human remains were found at Happisburgh, they would be the oldest in northern Europe and the first indication of what this species was. Under the current practice of the law, those remains would have to be reburied and effectively destroyed. Before 2008, guidelines allowed for the proper preservation and study of bones of sufficient age and historical interest, while the Burial Act1857 applied to more recent remains. The Ministry of Justice assured archaeologists two years ago that the law was temporary, but has so far failed to revise it.Mike Parker Pearson, an archaeologist at Sheffield University, said, “Archaeologists have been extremely patient because we were led to believe the ministry was sorting out this problem, but we feel that we cannot wait any longer.”The ministry has no guidelines on where or how remains should be reburied, or on what records should be kept.1.According to the passage, scientists are unhappy with the law mainly because ________.A.it is only a temporary measure on the human remainsB.it is unreasonable and thus destructive to scientific researchC.it was introduced by the government without their knowledgeD.it is vague about where and how to rebury human remains2.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.Temporary extension of two years will guarantee scientists enough time.B.Human remains of the oldest species were dug out at Happisburgh.C.Human remains will have to be reburied despite the extension of time.D.Scientists have been warned that the law can hardly be changed.3.What can be inferred about the British law governing human remains?A.The Ministry of Justice did not intend to protect human remains.B.The Burial Act 1857 only applied to remains uncovered before 1857.C.The law on human remains hasn't changed in recent decades.D.The Ministry of Justice has not done enough about the law.4.Which of the following might be the main idea of the passage?A.New discoveries should be reburied, the government demands.B.Research time should be extended, scientists require.C.Law on human remains needs thorough discussion, authorities say.D.Law could bury ancient secrets forever, archeologists warn.(二)Looking for some inspiration or ideas for your creative stories? To start with, some writers describe winter by using their five senses or their imagination. Others write on their favourite winter activities. Whatever you choose to write about, working on a winter story can always help to improve your writing skills. Now read the following story and see if it helps get rid of any icy writing block you've been struggling with.Beep, beep. Beepbeep: the alarm clock rang. Slowly, I got out of warm bed down onto the wooden floor which the winter had thrown its cold upon. The bitter cold temperature penetrated (穿透)my socks and I hurried to put my feet in shoes.Looking out of the window, I watched the white snow, soft and thick, drop onto rooftops and trees. Half an hour later, finishing the last of my hot chocolate, I prepared to enter the adventure that waited for me outside. I buttoned my jacket and fastened my boots. Hat on, I opened the door and was greeted by the winter coldness. In the depths of winter, the early morning did not have the rush of the rest of the year. Most of my neighbours were put off by the cold, and stayed in bed until the sun had climbed higher into the sky.Unseen by those who remained locked inside their homes, warm in their beds, I enjoyed being alone with the beauty of the wintertime. Those indoors were unable to appreciate the snows capes, ice crystals, frost and the crisp(清新的)breeze. For them, the coming of winter meant just the arrival of the cold.Appreciation depends on contrasts. One cannot love the warmth of April if one has not known the freezing cold of winter. Later that year, the heat of the sun on my skin would be wonderful for my memories of that cold morning and others like it.1.The underlined word “adventure” refers to“________”.A.getting out of bed on the cold winter morningB.enjoying the loveliness of the winter outdoorsC.going skiing on the cold winter morningD.throwing snowballs with friends2.According to the story, most of the neighbours ________.A.didn't work in winterB.stayed up late in winterC.missed the beauty of winterD.enjoyed the seasons except winter3.Which of these statements is TRUE according to the story?A.Of all the seasons, the writer loves winter most.B.The writer regrets that he went out on the freezing cold winter morning.C.The writer believes contrasts make our experiences of the seasons lovelier.D.The writer values autumn and summer more than winter.4.What function does the story mentioned in the passage serve?A.To share some winter thoughts with readers.B.To show readers how to work on a winter story.C.To inspire readers to take more exercise in winter.D.To tell readers how to appreciate the beauty of winter.(三)Recently, a student used his Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to film a female teacher scolding and tearing the work of a classmate. The public discussion that the incident caused started on the Internet. However, when it came to the media's attention, it quickly became a major topic in the education circles. The reactions so far suggest that the focus of the debate has been on one question: whom to blame?Teachers who are anxious to defend their professional dignity have tried to put the blame on the students. They mentioned their right to privacy(隐私)and for this reason they requested the Ministry of Education (MOE) to prohibit PDAs in schools. On the other hand, some parents and students have taken a different position. They feel that the teacher is also at fault. Caught up in the war of words between both sides, people are no longer interested in the “truth” of the matter which seems now unimportant. It was left to newspapers to discover the central point of the controversial issue, by stressing the problems that are not always easily noticed in our educational system. For those responsible for educating the young, this PDA incident conveys the message that “times have changed”,a reality that must have been felt even more strongly by the female teacher when reflecting on this unpleasant experience. Different times call for different professional approaches in education. The ability to understand the students they are teaching has always been the quality of successful teachers. Despite some factors, the incident shows that the teacher lacks good qualities on her part. Besides, the rules under current system to deal with recalcitrant students need to be improved. Also, it is an example which shows the issue we are familiar with: what to do with new technology? With PDAs, the new technology, the interaction (交流)between the teachers and students in classroom has been changed.1.The author's purpose in writing this passage is to________.A.improve the teacher's way of teachingB.stress the using of PDAs in the classroomC.change the students' behaviour in the classroomD.discuss the potential problems of educational system2.The underlined word “recalcitrant” in Paragraph 3 probably means“________”.A.difficult to controlB.interested in nothingC.unwilling to learnD.ready to obey rules3.The writer's attitude towards the PDA incident is________.A.optimisticB.criticalC.uncertainD.approvable4.What might be the best title for the passage?A.Whom to blame?B.The PDA incidentC.Times have changedD.What to do with new technology?专题限时训练(三十三)(一)【要点综述】英国法律规定,所有从人类古代居地出土的遗骸,必须被重新掩埋。

专题限时训练(二十八) [人物型阅读理解](限时:25分钟)(一)Kareem AbdulJabbar was one of the best basketball players in history. He was the NBA's most valuable player six times and a 19time AllStar. When he retired in 1989, he was the NBA's alltime leadin g scorer with 38,387 points. That record has still to be broken. After retirement, Jabbar began scoring in the literary world. He has written seven bestselling books. In his new children's book What Color Is My World?,he shines_the_spotlight_on AfricanAm erican inventors whose achievements often went unnoticed. A reporter recently interviewed him in New York City.R: The title of your new book is What Color Is My World?, but the subtitle is The Lost History of AfricanAmerican Inventors. Why do you say it's a lost history?K: AfricanAmerican inventors made some very significant contributions to American life and world culture, but they're not acknowledged. So I think I should put something in the spotlight.R: Why did you choose to present this information in the form of a children's book?K: I thought kids, especially AfricanAmerican kids, needed to know this information. They should get this information at an early age so that they can have an idea of what's possible. So many kids are told that sports and entertainment are the fields that they should go into, and everything else is ignored. I wanted to put something out there that gave them a broader picture of what was possible.R: How did you combine facts with a good story? How did you decide on which inventors to include?K: The inventors I chose all made significant contributions to American life. So, everybody likes ice cream, but nobody knows about the guy who invented the ice cream scoop(勺子). Everybody likes potato chips, but nobody really knows that a black cook invented potato chips. Things like that get through to people because these are things that are a part of their everyday life. Once they see black people are involved in inventing it, it changes things.1.The underlined phrase “shines the spotlight on” in the second paragraph can be replaced by “________”.A.directs people's attention toB.is very interested inC.thinks highly ofD.appeals to people not to disturb2.Why did Jabbar write the book What Color Is My World?A.To provide an instructive literary book for parents.B.To make people recognize the contributions AfricanAmericans made.C.To show he also has literary talent besides the talent in basketball.D.To raise money for poor AfricanAmerican kids.3.What did Jabbar intend to t ell AfricanAmerican kids in his book?A.Information about their early age.B.Fields they shouldn't go into.C.Things that can be ignored.D.Ideas of what is possible.4.According to Jabbar's words in the last paragraph, ________.A.not everybody likes ice cream and potato chipsB.ice cream and potato chips are both invented by a black cookC.his book may change people's attitude to black peopleD.things in everyday life are easier to be described in books(二)Patti Page, the topselling female artist of the 1950s with more than 100 million records sold, died on January 3rd, 2013, when she was 86. She was one of the most beloved singers of the postwar era. Take her The Tennessee Waltz for example, it sold more than 10 million copies and was her biggest hit.Born in Claremore, Oklahoma, a small town near Tulsa, Page originally dreamed of a career in commercial art. Her first job in the art department at a local radio station soon led to performing on he r own 15minute program. At age 20, Page was discovered by bigband leader Jack Rael, who quit his job to become her manager. In 1948, she signed her first recording contract with Mercury Records and two years later enjoyed her first hit record. She stayed with Mercury for the next 14 years and recorded hit after hit including With My Eyes Wide Open, I'm Dreaming and Old Cape Cod.Her last hit was Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte, recorded for the Bette Davis' movie of the same name. And then, there was Doggie in the Window. The creative tune was a huge hit, but with its repeated barking sounds and silly lyrics(歌词), the song has been used by many people as an example of all that was wrong with pop music in the early 1950s.Throughout the 1950s, Patti Page made regular appearances on television variety shows and in 1957 she was chosen to host the musical program The Big Record. The following year, Page appeared in her own CBS television series, The Patti Page Show. 毛额市鹌鹑阳光实验学校专题限时训练(三十二) [文化教育型阅读理解(一)](限时:25分钟)(一)For thousands of years, the most important two buildings in any British village have been the church and the pub. Traditionally, the church and the pub are at the heart of any village or town, where the people gather together to socialize and exchange news.As a result, British pubs are often old and well preserved. Many of them have become historic sites. The most famous example is the pub in the city of Nottingham called “The Old Trip to Jerusalem”, which dates back to the year 1189 AD and is probably the oldest pub in England. However, British pubs are not just for kings and queens; they welcome people from all classes and parts of society. On a cold night, the pub's landlord or landlady can always find a warm place for you by the fire. There is always honest and hearty food and plenty of drink available at an affordable price. That's how things used to be. Things are beginning to change. It is said that the credit crunch(信贷紧缩) is causing British pubs to go out of business. People do not have enough spare money to spend on beer. Recently, the UK government banned smoking in all pubs, and that may also have affected the number of customers going to pubs. This decline is happening despite the fact that in 2005 the UK government started to allow pubs to stay open after 11 pm. Previously, with 11 pm as closing time, customers would have to drink quite quickly, meaning they sometimes got more drunk than they would if allowed to drink slowly. The British habit of drinking a lot very quickly is known as “binge drinking”,and it causes longterm health problems for people and problems with violent crime for communities. In order to save their businesses, pubs are trying to change with the market. British pubs now offer something for everyone. A lot of pubs used to be “working men's clubs”, meaning that women could not usually enter. Today, however, women can freely enter 99% of pubs without experiencing any problems. Perhaps things are changing for the better after all.1.The passage mainly tells us something about ________.A.the past and present of British pubsB.the decline of British pubsC.the long history of British pubsD.the importance of British pubs2.Which may not be the cause of the decline of British pubs?A.The credit crunch.B.The present closing time.C.The ban of smoking.D.Having no spare money.3.We can infer from the passage that ________.A.British people used to like drinking slowlyB.closing the pubs early will reduce social problemsC.“binge drinking” means drinking less beerD.British government aims to discourage people from “binge drinking”4.We can see from the last paragraph that the author ________.A.is against the admission of too many women to the pubsB.holds an optimistic attitude towards the British pubsC.thinks that women in the pubs will cause fewer social problems D.thinks that British pubs should offer everything you need(二)In this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet, despite the competition, my 8yearold daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition she won last year.As a writer I know about winning contests, and about losing them.I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher. I also know the pressures of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn't win the contest again? That's the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface.A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked her, “Don't you want to win again?” “No,” she replied. “I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.”I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地) told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided” by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I knew very little about farm animals who used tools or angels who went to fir st grade, I had to accept the fact that I was coopting my daughter's experience. While stepping back is difficult for me, it is certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough away to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices.1.What did the author say about her own writing experience?A.She was constantly under pressure of writing more.B.Most of her stories had been rejected by publishers.C.Her way to success was full of pains and frustrations.D.She did not quite live up to her reputation as a writer.2.Why did Rebecca want to enter this year's writing contest?A.She wanted to share her stories with readers.B.She had won a prize in the previous contest.C.She was sure of winning with her mother's help.D.She believed she possessed real talent for writing.3.The author took great pains to refine her daughter's stories because ________.A.she wanted to help Rebecca realize her dream of becoming a writer B.she believed she had the knowledge and experience to offer guidance C.she did not want to disappoint Rebecca who needed her help so much D.she was afraid Rebecca's imagination might run wild while writing 4.What's the author's advice for parents?A.Children should be given every chance to voice their opinions.B.Children should be allowed freedom to grow through experience.C.Parents should keep an eye on the activities their kids engage in.D.A writing career, though attractive, is not for every child to pursue.(三)A practical English Grammar is intended for intermediate(中级的) and postintermediate students. We hope that more advanced learners and teachers will also find it useful. The book is a comprehensive survey of structures and forms, written in clear modern English and illustrated with numerous examples. Areas of particular difficulty have been given special attention. Differences between conversational usage and strict grammatical forms are shown but the emphasis is on controversial forms. In the fourth edition, the main changes are as follows.1. Explanation and examples have been brought up to date.2. There is now more information on countable and uncountable nouns, attributive and predicative adjectives, adverbs of place, sentence adverbs, cleft sentences, prepositions, conjunctives, modal verbs, perfect tenses, infinitive constructions, the passive, purpose clauses.3. Some material has been rearranged to make comparisons easier. For example, parts of chapters on can, may, must, etc. are now grouped by functions; verbs of liking and preference have a chapter to themselves; suggestions and invitations have joined the chapter on commands, requests and advice.4. The content list now summaries every edition heading, and thereis a new index containing many more references. In this edition the sign “~” is frequently used to show a change of speakers in examples of dialogues. Although the sign “=” sometimes connects two words or expressions with the same meaning, it is often used more freely, e.g. to indicate a transformation from active to passive or direct to indirect speech. We wish to thank all at Oxford University Press who have assisted in the preparation of the fourth edition. We would also like to thank Professor Egawa of Nihon University, Japan, Professor Rene Dirven of Duisburg University, Germany and other colleagues for their friendly and helpful suggestions.London, November 1985 A.J.T., A.VM1.The grammar book mentioned in this passage is not suitable for ________.A.a middle school teacherB.a primary school studentC.a senior high studentD.a college student2.According to the passage, we know that his grammar book________.A.compares modern English with old EnglishB.gives a large number of examples to reduce difficultyC.attaches more importance to controversial formsD.pays little attention to strict grammatical forms3.Which of the following statements about the changes is TRUE?A.This book keeps up with the latest usages of the American English language.B.This edition offers more information about pronouns.C.It's not easy for us to find the information we need in this book.D.One particular chapter discusses verbs like “care, like, love, hate, prefer, wish”.4.When you see this line in the book, “Did you get a ticket? ~Yes, I managed to get one.”, we can understand that ________.A.the two parts before and after the sign “~” mean the same B.the two parts before and after “~” are said by two different peopleC.the second speaker repeats what the first speaker saysD.the topic is changed in the part after the sign “~”5.In the last paragraph, the authors thank several people because________.A.they have helped the authors with this editionB.they have agreed to buy a lot of books from the authorsC.the authors want to make use of the fame of those peopleD.those people will make advertisements for this book专题限时训练(三十二)(一)【要点综述】文章讲述了英国酒吧的发展过程及作者对将来酒吧的发展所持的乐观态度。

毛额市鹌鹑阳光实验学校专题限时训练(三十七) [社会生活型阅读理解(二)](限时:25分钟)(一)Increased use of the Internet and mobile phones is undermining pupils' capacity for independent study and promoting poor grammar, it was claimed.Cranfield School of Management found almost 6 in 10 schoolchildren were copying information directly from websites for homework tasks without properly reading it.More than a quarter thought it was an acceptable practice, even though they knew it was considered plagiarism (剽窃).The study, based on a sample of around 260 pupils aged from 11 to 18 at a secondary school in the Midlands, raised fresh concerns that modern technology was having a destructive effect on young people.Andrew Kakabadse, professor of International Management Development at Cranfiel d, said, “Our research shows that technology obsession prevents spelling skills, encourages plagiarism, and disturbs classroom learning.”“Despite school policies restricting mobile phone usage, students use the phone frequently, with the majority making calls from the toilets. The mobile phone continues to be a main channel of social communication during the school day.”The report revealed that the socalled “textspeak” was increasingly finding its way into pupils' school work.3 in 10 students admit to using text message shortcuts, such as “r u ok” in essays and classroom tasks. It followed a study earlier this year that found almost half of teachers failed to understand some pupils' writing because it was so full of confusing language. Phrases such as “innit” and “Gr8” were regularly found in school work, it was claimed. The Cranfield study found that mobile use was so common that many pupils chose to ignore school rules on phones.More than a third said they would use their mobile phones in class, while nearly three quarters said they would not even make an excuse to leave class to answer a phone call.1.The underlined word “undermining” in the first paragraph can best be replaced by “________”.A.determiningB.keepingC.weakeningD.increasing2.It can be inferred from what Kakabadse said that ________.A.he is in favour of students' mobile phone usage at schoolB.he believes schools are responsible for technology obsession C.the research finds a new way to improve school managementD.it is hard to limit students' mobile phone usage at school3.What can we learn from the passage?A.Most students' writing skills are becoming worse.B.Text message language may affect pupils' language skills.C.Students like to invent new words in their writing.D.30% of pupils often send text messages when studying.4.The passage is mainly about ________.A.the negative effect of technology on students' studyB.technology's positive influence on students' achievementC.the importance of online social communicationD.the rapidly growing role of communication technologies5.What's the attitude of the author to the problem?A.Optimistic. B.Approving.C.Anxious. D.Tolerant.(二)If you want to know how crazy people can be about their pets, you might remember that Helmsley left $12 million to her little Maltese dog when she died. The dog's name is Trouble. And apparently Trouble is still alive. Of course, I would hang on,too, if someone left me $12 million. Look! Topshelf dog food, soft pillows everywhere, drivers walking me i n nice leafy parks. I would live to be 110 in dog years. The dog's story is still fresh in my mind the other night when I leave a steak house after a superb meal. Then I notice a woman carrying a small bag out of the door behind me.Once outside, she walks over to where a man is holding a tiny dog and it's a baby. The dog looks like a Maltese, too, barking and annoying, with a cute haircut. And now I am treated to an absolute astonishing sight. Because now the woman reaches into the bag and begins pulling out little pieces of meat, which she puts on a plastic spoon and feeds to the dog. This is no cheap steak house. It's_actually_way_out_of_my_league —I'm there only because it's a special occasion. I can tell you this: if I walked out of the place with any leftover steak, it sure wouldn't go to a dog. Not at those prices. So now the woman is spoonfeeding the dog and the man is just standing there, holding this dog and looking as if this is the most normal thing in the world. And the dog is calmly chewing these pieces of steak as if he's a little king. And this dog is in no hurry. He's having a great time.A few minutes go by, and now the dog finishes all of his steak. At this point, I hear the woman say to the man,“Think he's still hungry?” And she glances behind her at the restaurant, as if she might go backto get more steak for the dog.Watching all this, I'm afraid I'm going to shout, “Are you out of your mind feeding all that pricey steak to that little dog? Do you see what our American life is like today? We're all going to be eating dog food if this keeps up!”1.Why does the author say he would live to be 110 in dog years?A.Because he is always in poor health and falls ill.B.Because a Maltese dog lives longer than a human being.C.Because his grandparents left him a large sum of money.D.Because he thinks the dog is treated extremely well.2.What is the story mainly about?A.An American family's happy life.B.A Maltese dog getting $12 million from its owner.C.A New Yorker spending $ 8 billion for a few banks.D.A pet dog being fed with expensive food.3.The underlined part “It's actually way out of my league” (in Para. 6) means “________”.A.the restaurant is too expensive for the authorB.the author hates the dog being taken thereC.the superb restaurant is about to be out of serviceD.the dog doesn't belong to the author's group4.Seeing the dog is being treated to expensive steak, the author becomes extremely ________.A.indifferentB.annoyedC.concernedD.envious(三)An “apple polisher” is one who gives gifts to win friendship or special treatment. It is not exactly a bribe(贿赂), but is close to it.All sorts of people are “apple polishers”, including politicians and people in high offices—just about everybody. Oliver Cromwell, the great English leader, offered many gifts to win the support of George Fox and his party, but failed. There are other phrases meaning the same thing as“applepolishing”—“softsoaping” or “butteringup”. A gift is just one way to “softsoap” somebody, or to “butter him up”.Another that is just as effective is flattery, giving someone high praise—telling him how good he looks, or how well he speaks, or how talented and wise he is.Endless are the ways of flattery. Who does not love to hear it? Only an unusual man can resist the thrill of being told how wonderful he is. In truth, flattery is good medicine for most of us, who get so little of it.We need it to be more sure of ourselves. It cannot hurt unless we get carried away by it. But if we just lap it up for its good value and nourishment, as a cat laps up milk, then we can still remain true to ourselves.Sometimes, however, flattery will get you nothing from one who has had too much of it. A good example is the famous 12th century legend of King Canute of Denmark and England. The king got tired of listening to endless sickening flattery of his courtiers(朝臣). They overpraised him to the skies, as a man of limitless might. He decided to teach them a lesson. He took them to the seashore and sat down. Then he ordered the waves to stop coming in. The tide was too busy to listen to him. The king was satisfied. This might show his followers how weak his power was and how empty their flattery was.1.Which of the following activities has nothing to do with “apple polishing”?A.A boy tells his girlfriend how pretty she looks.B.An employee tells her boss how good he is at management.C.A knight is said to be of limitless power by his followers.D.A teacher praises her students for their talent and wisdom.2.What does the writer want to prove with Cromwell's example?A.Everybody can be an apple polisher.B.Cromwell was not a good apple polisher.C.George Fox and his party were not apple polishers.D.There are people who don't like b eing applepolished.3.Which of the following statements about flattery is TRUE according to the author?A.Too much flattery can carry us away.B.Flattery is too empty to do people any good.C.Flattery can get you nothing but excessive(过度的) pride.D.Flattery is one of the ways to applepolished people.4.Why did King Canute of Denmark and England take his followers to the seashore?A.Because he was sick of his normal life.B.Because he disliked being overpraised any more.C.Because he wanted them to realize how wise he was.D.Because he wanted them to see how weak he was as a king.5.Who does the author think that flattery can do good to?A.Those who are politicians or in high offices.B.Those who lack confidence.C.Those who are really excellent.D.Those who think highly of themselves.专题限时训练(三十七)(一)【要点综述】使用互联网和手机的学生越来越多了,可是,科技不仅给学生们带来了便捷,也给他们的学习带来了很多不利影响。

专题限时训练(三十) [时闻型阅读理解](限时:25分钟)(一)As Apple tries to maintain its growth and success in China, the world's largest smart phone market is becoming even more critical. Apple's shares(股份) fell sharply as the company's earnings for the holiday quarter through December disappointed investors. The sales of the iPhone, which included both the iPhone 5 and older models, came in at the low end of analysts' expectations, while the company's income plan for the second quarter was below analysts' forecasts, though Apple was known to give conservative (保守的) forecasts. Some analysts have said that for Apple to regain its growth, the company needs a more aggressive strategy for markets, or more specifically for China, where the market for smart phones has been expanding more rapidly than anywhere else. In China, demand is particularly great for inexpensive phones that run on Android(安卓) operating system, sold by many Chinese phone makers as well as Korea's Samsung Electronics Co.But Apple says it's already enjoying strong growth in China. “We saw big growth in iPhones,” Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said. He said that the company had been quickly expanding its sales channels in China, including the number of Apple stores. “This isn't nearly what we need; we're not even close to that, but we're making great progress,” he said.In China, a big missing piece for Apple is China Mobile Ltd, the biggest local telecom carrier that doesn't yet sell the iPhone. Earlier this month, Mr Cook met China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua in Beijing and discussed cooperation, stirring hopes that the world's largest mobile carrier may soon start offering the iPhone.Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple was working on a lowerend iPhone that could launch as early as this year. But one possible challenge for Apple in China is that lowpriced Androidbased phones are getting better in terms of quality. A report from CLSA in late November showed that many smart phones sold at about 1,000 yuan($160) came with higherresolution screens, better cameras and more powerful processors than phones at that price did a year earlier.1.Apple's shares dropped sharply because in December________A.the iPhone wasn't popular in ChinaB.its product quality was widely criticizedC.the earnings for the holiday quarter were disappointingD.the investors were not satisfied with Apple's management2.What can we learn from the passage?A.Apple tends to offer a lower sales forecast.B.China Mobile Ltd began to team up with Apple.C.Cook was pessimistic about what Apple did in China.D.Apple didn't take measures to develop Chinese markets.3.The author uses the report from CLSA to prove________.A.their prices are actually lower than a year earlierB.Apple in China has ability to deal with any problemC.lowerend Androidbased phones are progressing fastD.the promotion of lowerend iPhones will face a challenge4.The main purpose of the passage is to show the readers ________.A.Apple's high popularity in ChinaB.the challenge Apple faces in ChinaC.the approaching failure Apple will suffer in ChinaD.Apple's aggressive strategies in its market expansion(二)Experts say the temperature in Eyjafjallajokull's hole appears to have fallen to 100℃, meaning it is now producing steam, not magma(岩浆).But officials warned that it was too early to say whether the eruption was over completely.Ash clouds from the volcano grounded thousands of flights last month.Steinunn Jakobsdottir, a geophysicist from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, told the BBC that the volcano was “kind of not active for the moment”.“The history of the volcano is such that it calms down and then it gets energy again,” she said.“There are still earthquakes under the volcano, and the small earthquake is still not quite down to what it was before the eruption.”Magnus Gudmundsson, of Iceland University, flew over the volcano on Sunday and said information from heat cameras showed the temperatures at the crater had fallenbelow 100℃.But he told the AFP news agency that nothing was promised and that the previous eruption at the volcano had lasted 13 months, from 1821—1823.“It stopped and started again several times with different intervals(间隔), so it's difficult to say, difficult to give a timeline,” he said.He also said it was impossible to say whether the neighbouring Katla Volcano—a much larger mountain—might also erupt. At the height of its activity, the volcano sent out huge clouds of ash, which led to airlines grounding their planes for fear it could interfere with plane engines. It was the biggest action of closing airspace in Europe since World War Ⅱ,and affected at least 10 million passengers worldwide.1.What do experts think Eyjafjallajokull is like now?A.Magma is still coming out.B.The hole appears about 100℃.C.The eruption was not over.D.It is very cold.2.How do experts know the temperature in Eyjafjallajokull's hole?A.By taking photos.B.By taking its temperature.C.By going close to it.D.By driving past it.3.What does Steinunn Jakobsdottir think of Eyjafjallajokull?A.It will erupt again soon.B.It will be sleeping.C.Another mountain might also erupt.D.It's uncertain.4.What do you think the main idea is?A.The biggest action of closing airspace in Europe.B.The temperature in Eyjafjallajokull's hole.C.The Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland.D.The earthquake in Iceland.(三)BEIJING—China's Beijing and Shanghai cities and Guangdong Province on Sunday published plans to gradually allow migrant workers' children to enter senior high schools and sit college entrance exams locally. They are the latest in a total of 13 provinces and municipalities(市) to formulate plans to ensure that rural children who have followed their parents to cities can enjoy the same rights as their urban peers in education.Beijing will allow migrant workers' children to attend local vocational schools in 2013 and allow them to be matriculated by universities after graduating from the vocational programs in 2014, said a statement from the city's commission of education.Shanghai took a step further, saying it will allow migrant children in the city to enter local senior high schools, vocational schools and sit college entrance exams (commonly known as gaokao) locally starting in 2014.Guangdong has asked its cities to start recruiting(招收) migrant workers' children in local senior high schools in 2013. The province will allow these children to sit gaokao and compete with local residents in college entrance exams starting in 2016. Luo Weiqi said the restrictions would be relaxed gradually and “step by step” as the province must solve the conflict between its gigantic migrant population and a scarcity of education resources.Migrant workers, whose children could be benefited by the new plans of the three regions, must have residential permits, stable jobs and incomes, and meet other local requirements, according to the plans.China's hukou, or household registration system, used to confine children to attending schools in their home provinces. A regulation in 2003 amended this by allowing migrant workers' children to receive the nineyear compulsory education in cities where their parents worked.Official figures show that China has more than 250 million farmersturnedworkers living in cities.
