Most of those surveyed (68%) disagree with the opinion that reading is boring, or old-fashioned.Teens Read Variety of MaterialOver half the teenagers interviewed said they read more than ten books a year. The results also showed that mid dle school students read more books than high school students. Most teens (66%) like to read fiction, such as novels and stories. Only 26% were interested in non-fiction, such as biographies and history books. Sixty-four percent of students liked reading ‘stories about people of my own age’ as their favorite topic. Mysteries and detective stories came second on the list at 53%. Just under 50% said they were interested in reading about their own culture and heritage.Other InterestsOf the teenagers who took part in the survey, 49% said that libraries are where they get most of their books. However, many complained that their school libraries do not have enough up-to-date, interesting books and magazines. Even though many teenagers in the U.S. enjoy reading, they still have other interests. When asked which activity would be the most difficult to give up for a week, 48% said listening to music. TV would be difficult to give up for 25% of those surveyed.__28 ___Another survey which is published by www. studied the differences between teenage boys’ and girls’ reading habits. According to the report, more girls than boys read for fun. Many more girls (77%) than boys (6%) read fashion and beauty magazines. More boys (47%) than girls (7%) read magazines about video games, but an equal number of each like to read adventure stories and newspapers. The passage is mostly likely to be found from a .A. novelB. reportC. websiteD. storyCIn a book called Magnificent Obsession, by Lloyd C. Douglas, a description is given of people helping others but doing it secretly. When difficult problems worrie d a person, friends nearby would meet to discuss possible solution without the person knowing their actions. When a solution was agreed upon, one or two of the friends would carry out the plan and solve the problem secretly, to the great delight of the worried person. The helpers would stand by privately, content with their success. No reward was given to the problem solvers, not even a sincere “thank you”, because they were never known. This idea is popular today but in a different way. The phrase “pay it forward” is now used when one person helps another. However, the person helped may not be able to repay the person or group that helped them. So rather than return the favor to their helpers, they are supposed to help someone else in thefuture, which means they pay it forward. It is a sense of responsibility(责任) which makes us want to give back in equal measure to the one who has helped us. But, in this case, the responsibility turns to helping someone in the future.Suppose your elderly grandmother pays part of your schooling. She may tell you there is no need to repay her because it is a gift from someone who loves you very much. Nothing would please her more than to have you use her money to get a good education. You may never be able to repay her for such a gift. However, she not only gave you some money, but she provided you with an example that you should also help other people who need it.People with serious needs are everywhere. Many are children who need better clothes, more books and even better schools. Some are elderly people who can’t afford their medicine or a doctor’s care. Consider how you can “pay it forward” rather than pay money back to your grandmother.33. The helpers in the book “Magnificent Obsession” were not rewarded because ______________.A. they hadn’t solved the problems thoroughlyB. they had solved the problems secretlyC. they were friends of the worried individualD. they expected to be paid back in the future。

Perhaps we will go back to using horses, carriages and bicycles. In the Second World War, some people didn't use gas made from petroleum (石油) in their cars. They made gas from wood and plants instead. The car didn't go fast, but they ran, so this was better than nothing. However, in the future, we can't cut down all our trees to make gas; we need our trees for other things, too.Besides different types of gas, we can also use electricity (电) to run our cars, but first we must make the electricity! Some countries have coal and they make electricity with that, but we might not always have coal, either. Other countries have big, strong rivers, and they can use the power of water to turn turbines (涡轮机) and make electricity more easily and cheaply. We are also able to get power from the ocean tides. We put turbines into the mouth of the river. Of course, many of us know we may eat the whole thing in the end.It isn't just girls. Most of us find it hard to say "no" to something attractive. However, scientists now say that willpower is very important to success and a happy life.Scientists in different countries have been studying the effects of willpower on people's lives for a long time. The results are similar, according to an article on February 7 in the Guardian, a famous British newspaper. In one experiment, scientists told young children that they could either have a marshmallow (圆形软糖)now, or two marshmallows in 15 minutes. Waiting obviously needed more willpower. Scientists then continued studying the children as they grew up. They wanted to see if some children always had stronger willpower. They also wanted to see how having stronger willpower affected their lives.Years later, scientists found that the children who had waited for two marshmallows were all healthier, happier and richer adults. Oppositely, the children who had shown weaker willpower at that young age were more likely to be in low-paid jobs, to be overweight, to have social problems. But there is hope, Roy F Baumeister, an American social psychology(心理学)professor (教授) told the Guardian. Baumeister says we can train our willpower just like we train our muscles(肌肉).Even a little practice can strengthen (加强)our overall self-control if we do it regularly. You could start by making yourself stand up straight, speaking in complete sentences, or using a computer mouse with the other hand. Scientists have found that people who manage to change little habits often perform much better in laboratory willpower tests.Like muscles, willpower can "get tired". Don't try to do too many things at the same time, or when you don't have enough energy, for example when you are ill. If you already feel tired, you can try to recharge(恢复)your willpower with a good night's sleep and by eating well.(1)The example of a girl eating cheesecake is used toA.prove that girls have weak willpowerB.introduce the topic of willpower to the readersC.show that cheesecake is especially attractive to girlsD.show the connection between willpower and success(2)What can we infer from the experiment?A.The scientists had already known the results before the experiment.B.It showed that willpower is the most important to success and a happy life.C.The children who chose to wait were more likely to be successful in their lives.D.The children who chose only one marshmallow at first had stronger willpower.(3)Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the training of willpower?A.You should have a goal every day.B. Good rest and proper diet can help.C. Willpower needs to be exercised regularly.D. Keep willpower from being used too much. (4) What is the article mainly about?A. How willpower and muscles are similar and how they can be trained.B.How willpower affects people's lives and how it is similar to muscles.C.How willpower is important to success and how we can make it stronger.D.How willpower is connected with success and how they affect each other【答案】(1) B(2) C(3)A(4)C【解析】【分析】主要讲了毅力的重要性和怎样让毅力变得更强。
