The next few days passed in peace.
On Day 6, my son was lying beside me on the beach, watching the sun going down. He was playing with the sand. And there was something shining in his eyes. Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years old. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from camel’s hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.
The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged(蓬乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to tell what he had been doing.
The cat’s lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamin’s cousins, Mr. Pennin gton, came to visit. He was surprised to see Benjamin’s drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes. He also sent six engravings(版画)by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen.
In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamin’s parents if he might take the boy to Philadelphia for a visit.
In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape(风景)painting. William Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was greatly surprised at Benjamin’s talent and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and boring. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said, “Those two books were my friends by day, and under my pillow(枕头) at night.” While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old
boy decided then that he would be an artist.
51.What is the text mainly about?
A. Benjamin’s visit to Philadelphia.
B. Williams’ support for Benjamin.
C. The beginning of Benjamin’s life as an artist.
D. The friendship between Benjamin and Pennington.
52. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 suggest?

D. Benjamin would have real brushes soon.

A. master the use of paints

In 2018, Science magazine asked some young scientists what schools should teach students. Most said students should spend less time remembering facts and have more space for creative activities. As the Internet grows more powerful, students can get knowledge easily. Why should they be required to carry so much of it around in their heads?
Civilizations(文明) develop through forgetting life skills that were once necessary. In the Agricultural(农业的) Age, a farmer could afford to forget hunting skills. When societies industrialized, the knowledge of farming could be safe to forget. Nowadays, smart machines help us to get most human knowledge. It seems that we no longer need to remember most things. Does it matter?
Researchers have realized several problems that may happen. For one, human beings have biases(偏见), and smart machines are likely to increase our biases. Many people believe smart machines are necessarily correct and objective(客观的), but machines are trained through a repeated testing and scoring process(过程). In the process, human beings still decide on the correct answers.
Another problem relates to the ease of getting information. When there were no computers, efforts were required to get knowledge from other people, or go to the library. We know what knowledge lies in other brains or books, and what lies in our heads. But today, the Internet gives us the information we need quickly. This can lead to the mistaken belief—the knowledge we found was part of what we knew all
along.
In a new civilization rich in machine intelligence(智慧), we can easily get to smart memory networks where information is stored. But dependency on a network suggests possibilities of being harmed easily. The collapse of any of the networks of relations our health depends upon, such as food and energy, would produce terrible results. Without food we get hungry; without energy we feel cold. And it is through widespread loss of memory that civilizations are at risk of falling into a dark age.
We forget old ways to free up time and space for new skills. As long as the older forms of knowledge are stored somewhere in our networks, and can be found when we need them, perhaps they’re not really forgotten. Still, as time goes on, we slowly but unquestionably become strangers to future people.
54. Smart machines are likely to increase our biases because ____________.
A. they go off course in testing and scoring.
B. we control the training process on them.
C. we offer them too much information.
D. they overuse the provided answers.
55. The ease of getting information from the Internet __________.
A. frees us from making efforts to learn new skills
B. prevents civilizations from being lost at a high speed
C. misleads us into thinking we already knew the knowledge
D. separates the facts we have from those in the smart machines
56. The underlined word “collapse” in Paragraph 5 probably means “____________”.
A. a sudden failure
B. the basic rule
C. an unhappy start
D. the slow development
57. T he writer’s main purpose in writing this passage is to _______________.
A. question about the standards of information storage.
B. discuss our problems of communication with machines.
C. stress the importance of improving our remembering ability.
D. remind us of the risk of depending on machines to remember.

Though times have changed, falling asleep in class is still very common among teenagers.
Why do students sometimes fall asleep in class? An important reason is that they don’t have enough sleep. However, there are also causes for getting too little sleep.
Homework is a daily job for most students, one that can take three to four hours per night. A teenager who wants to be able to take part in any activity besides homework must stay up late to fit everything in. Club activities, sports, computer-game playing, and TV viewing, for example, all make teens have less time for both homework and sleep. Sometimes teens don’t have enough sleep because of after-school jobs that are taken on to make extra money for college, family costs, or just for clothes.
Physical problems are another reason that make students fall asleep in class. For example, insomnia, which may keep a student up at night, making students tired during class hours, is a serious problem that may require medical care.
Falling asleep in class can cause quite serious results. First of all, sleeping in class is not welcomed in school. What’s more, it is highly possible that other students may make jokes about those who sleep in class. However, the most harmful result of sleeping in class is missing out on important points. In the long run, sleepers may end up failing classes.
Since teens are probably not going to deal with the problem, falling asleep in class will probably remain an all-too-common problem. It will continue until more teens find a way to balance their personal and social lives with school and work.

Thank you very much. Thank you, Doctor Johnson. Well, it is really great to be back at university again. The thing that I want to tell you today is this: Education is important. When
I came to the US, I was only thinking about being a farmer, but I could not read the newspaper. And I could not understand the news on television or movies or anything like this. So, I entered the city college to take English classes for foreign students. I was very proud that I was going to a college because no one in my family ever went to any college or to any university. You know, when you’re 15 years old in my country, you finish school and then you learn a business. And that’s exactly what I did. When I was 15 years old, I lea rned how to be a farmer. A year later, I came to America. Luckily, I met a very good teacher who encouraged me to take some math classes, business classes, and history classes, and I became a full-time college student. And today, when I look back, I’m so h appy because you never know where life will take you. All of a sudden. I started making money because I was really good at math. You know, how to work out everything with math is so important. This is something that I learned when I started my own business, which is doing really well.
