For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. There is no doubt that adults, and even highly educated adults, vary greatly in the speed and efficiency of their reading. Some proceed very slowly throughout; others dash along too quickly and then have to regress. Poor readers in particular may lack the ability to vary their manner of reading according to the type of reading matter and to their intentions in reading it. A good reader can move at great speed through the text of a novel or similar light reading matter. He may be able to skim a page, picking up a word or two here and there, and gain a general idea of what the text is about without really reading it. In reading more difficult material, with the intention of taking in the whole of it, he will proceed more slowly, but even then he will vary his pace, concentrating on the key words and passages, perhaps re-reading them several times and pass more quickly over the remainder. A less efficient reader tends to maintain the same speed whatever the material he reads. Consequently, even light reading matter gives him little pleasure because he reads so slowly. But this pace may be too fast for really difficult material which requires special concentration at difficult points.A type of reading which necessitates careful attention to detail is proofreading, in which the reader, in order to detect misprints in a sample print, has to notice not so much the meaning of what he reads as the exact shape and order of letters and words in the text. This is extremely difficult for most people, since they are accustomed to overlooking such details. In fact, considerable practice is required to practice this task efficiently and it can be done only by reading very slowly, and by paying comparatively little attention to the general meaning of the text.第1题The author claims that there is a difference in reading speed______.A.among readers who have different experienceB.among all the readersC.between the poorly educated and the highly educatedD.among the highly educated people第2题A good reader is a reader who______.A.concentrates on the wonderful part of the articleB.always reads slowly and carefullyC.changes his speed according to the kind of textD.changes his speed according to the interesting of the text第3题The author says that when reading a novel, a good reader can quickly read______.A.every part of the bookB.the most wonderful part in the bookC.the major part in the bookD.the scientific part of the book第4题The last two sentences of the first paragraph mean that______.A.a reading speed too slow for a difficult book is just right for a non-serious oneB.a reading speed too slow for a non-serious book may be too fast for a difficult oneC.A reading speed too fast for difficult material is just right for a non-serious book is also too slow for a difficult oneD.A reading speed too slow for a non-serious book is also too slow for a difficult one第5题Which of the following can be the tide of the passage?A.Reading and listening.B.Difference between highly educated and poorly educated.C.Practice reading skill.D.Difference in the speed and efficiency of reading.下一题(6~10/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from allthe terrible things that have been shown on the screen.Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and hear the politicians before an election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count.Unfortunately, television´s influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn´t do funny things like the people on children´s programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That´s the time it takes on the screen.第6题In the past, many young people______.A.knew the effects of warB.went in for politicsC.liked to save the wounded in warsD.were willing to be soldiers第7题Now with TV people can______.A.discuss politics at an information centerB.show more interest in politicsC.make their own decisions on political affairsD.express their opinions freely第8题The author thinks that TV advertisements______.A.are not reliable on the wholeB.are useless to peopleC.are a good guide to adultsD.are very harmful to the young第9题Which is NOT true according to the passage?A.People have become used to crimes now.B.On a TV screen some problems can be solved quickly.C.People now like to read books with pictures.D.The adults are less violent than the young.第10题From the passage, we can conclude that______.A.children should keep away from TV programs should be improvedC.children´s books should have pictures has a deep influence on the young上一题下一题(11~15/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished .statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages, I was not an early reader and I could not do mental arithmetic. Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in, of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal-clear memory of dogs, the farm animals, the local birds and above all, the insects.I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world, and my enthusiasm has led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil, reading about other people´s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research. But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do notmake a scientist; one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of born worlds.第11题According to the author, a born naturalist should first of all be______.A.full of enthusiasmB.self-disciplinedC.full of ambitionD.knowledgeable第12题The first paragraph tells us that the author______.A.lost his hearing when he was a childB.didn´t like his brothers and sistersC.was born to a naturalist´s familyD.was interested in flowers and inserts in his childhood第13题The author says that he is a naturalist rather than a scientist probably because he thinks he______.A.just reads about other people´s observations and discoverieses up with solutions in most natural waysC.has a great deal of trouble doing mental arithmeticcks some of the qualities required of scientist第14题The author can´t remember his relatives clearly because______.A.he was fully occupied with observing natureB.he didn´t live very long with themC.the family was extremely largeD.he was too young when he lived with them第15题Which of the following statement is true?A.The author believes that a born naturalist cannot be a scientist.B.The author´s brothers and sisters were good at music and languages.C.The author read a lot of books about the natural world and the oil industry.D.The author spent a lot of time working on riddles.上一题下一题(16~20/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. They died when the ship went down. Men stood on the deck and smoked cigarettes. They died, too. This behavior is puzzling to economists, who like to believe that people tend to act in their own self-interest. "There was no pushing," says DavidSavage, an economist at Queensland University in Australia who has studied witness reports from the survivors. It was "very, very orderly behavior.´´Savage has compared the behavior of the passengers on the Titanic with those on the Lusitania, another ship that also sank at about the same time. But when the Lusitania went down, the passengers panicked. There were a lot of similarities between these two events. These two ships were both luxury ones, they had a similar number of passengers and a similar number of survivors. The biggest difference, Savage concludes, was time. The Lusitania sank in less than 20 minutes. But for the Titanic, it was two-and-a-half hours. "If you´ve got an event that lasts two-and-a-half hours, social order will take over and everybody will behave in a social manner,"Savage says. "If you´re going down in under 17 minutes, basically it´s instinctual." On the Titanic, social order ruled, and it was women and children first. On the Lusitania, instinct won out. The survivors were largely the people who could swim and get into the lifeboats.Yes, we´re self-interested, Savage says. But we´re also part of a society. Given time, social norms can beat our natural self-interest. A hundred years ago, women and children always went first. Men were stoic. On the Titanic, there was enough time for these norms to become forceful. 第16题According to the author, economists were confused because______.A.people´s behavior was disorderly on the TitanicB.people did not act in their own interest on the TitanicC.most men did not act in their own interest on the LusitaniaD.women and children could not climb into the lifeboats第17题The expression "won out" in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to "______".A.took the upper handB.went out of controlC.ran wildD.shut down第18题According to David Savage, ______was a critical factor in determining people´s behavior in the sinking of these two ships.A.social orderB.placeC.instinctD.time第19题According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE?A.Both ships were expensive ones.B.A similar number of women and children from both ships survived.C.About the same number of people from each ship died.D.Both ships had a similar number of passengers.第20题Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage?A.Why Didn´t Musicians Play on the Lusitania?B.Why Did Musicians Play on the Titanic?C.Why Didn´t Passengers Panic on the Titanic?D.Why Did Men Smoke on the Titanic?上一题下一题(1/29)Vocabulary and StructureDirections: In this part there are 30 incomplete sentences. Obviously, this was not a practical choice; I came here for more noble reasons. I wanted a broad education that would provide me with flexibility and a value system to guide me in my career. I wanted to open my eyes and expand my vision by interactingwith people who weren't studying science or engineering. My parents, teachers and other adultspraised me for such a sensible choice. They told me I was wise and mature beyond my 18 years, and I believed them.I headed off to college sure I was going to have an advantage over those students who wentto big engineering "factories" where they didn't care if you had values or were flexible. I was going to be a complete engineer: technical genius and sensitive humanist (人文学者)all in one.Now I m not so sure. Somewhere along the way my noble ideals crashed into reality, as all noble ideals eventually do. After three years of struggling to balance math, physics andengineering courses with liberal-arts courses, I have learned there are reasons why few engineering students try to reconcile (协调)engineering with liberal-arts courses in college. The reality that has blocked my path to become the typical successful student is that engineering and the liberal arts simply don't mix as easily as I supposed in high school.Individually they shape a person in very different ways. The struggle to reconcile the two fields of study is difficult.26.The author chose to study engineering at a small liberal-arts universitybecause he .()A.wanted to be an example of practicality and rationalityB.intended to be a combination of engineer and humanistC.wanted to coordinate engineering with liberal-arts courses in collegeD.intended to be a sensible student with noble ideals27.According to the author, by interacting with people who study liberal arts, engineering students can .( )A.balance engineering and the liberal-artsB.receive guidance in their careersC.become noble idealistsD.broaden their horizons28.In the eyes of the author, a successful engineering student is expected . Their reputation for economic independence, self-reliance, and hard work is well known and well deserved. Most of Ghana ’ s working women are farmers and traders. Only one woman in five, or even fewer, can be classified as simply housewives. Even these women often earn money by sewing or by baking and cooking things to sell. They also maintain vegetable gardens and chicken farms. Indeed, the woman who depends entirely upon her husband for support is looked upon with disfavor. Traditionally the tasks of motherhood have been shared. Mothers and sisters, grandmothers and nieces all helped to raise the children and to carry out daily tasks. As the family grew, older brothers and sisters also helped to care for the younger ones and helped in the home. Now with more children going to school, with more people moving away from their traditional homes, not only must the mother continue her income-producing activities, but she must take on all the heavy, time-consuming housework.Ghana today is looking for new ways to meet the needs of women and their families, such as providing more day care centers, so women can continue to play their multiple roles in the homeand in the economy.21.What is the role of most women in Ghana?A. At this stage nearly all the teachers are women, Mostly married. (80) The atmosphere is usually very friendly, and the teachers have now accepted the idea that the important thing is to make the children happy and interested. The old authoritarian (要绝对服从的) methods of education were discredited (不被认可) rather a long time ago - so much so that many people now think that they have gone too far in the direction of trying to make children happy and interested rather than gibing them actual instruction. The social education of young children tries to make them accept the idea that human beings in a society need to work together for their common good. So the emphasis is on co-operation rather than competition throughout most of this process. This may seem curious, in view of the fact that American society is highly competitive; however, the need for making people sociable in this sense has come to be regarded as one of the functions of education. Most Americans do grow up with competitive ideas, and obviously quite a few as criminals, but it is not fair to say that the educational system fails. Ti probably does succeed in making most people sociable and ready to help one another both in material ways and through kindness and friendliness.11. According to the passage, the U.S. elementary education is supposed to make children _____.A. sensible and sensitiveB. competitive and interestedC. curious and friendlyD. happy and co-operative12. Great numbers of Indians became sick and died. Between 1843 and 1854 the Indian population in one area of the country went down from 100, 000 t0 30,000.More land was needed for the increasing number of white settlers. In Washington, the old respect for the rights of the Indians disappeared. They made a series of experiments and observations to determine on which side women hold their babies and why.First they determined that modern mothers tend to hold their baby on the left. Of 155 right-handed mothers, 83% held the baby on the left. And out of 32 left-handed mothers, 78% held the baby on the left. As a control, women were watched emerging from super- markets carrying baby-sized packages; the bundles were held with no side preference (偏爱).A large number of mothers who brought their premature babies to a follow-up clinic were seen to hold their babies against their right side. So, 155 mothers who had been sepa- rated from their babies for 24 hours right after birth were observed for holding response. The experimenters presented the baby directly to the mid-line of the mother's body, and noted that 53% placed the baby on the left and 47% on the right. The author suggests "the time immediately after birth is a critical period when the stimulus of holding the baby releases a certain maternal response. " That is to say, she senses that the baby is better off on her left. Left-handed holding enables the baby to hear the heartbeat, a sound associated with the security of the womb. In order to discover whether hearing the heartbeat has a beneficial effect on the baby, the sound of a human heartbeat was played t0 102 babies in a nursery for 4 days. Teachingchildren to rea.d is not passing reading on to them 'It is dertairily not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that "reading cannot be taught di-rectly and schools shoulcl stop trying to do the impossible. " Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They' differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for t'eaching themselves to readl Teaching is also a public activity: it can be seen and observed.Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny. If roles of teacher and learner are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest (探索 ) for knowledge? Smith has one princi- pal rule for all teaching instructions. "Make learning to read easy. which means making. reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children. "When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are9 and when both teachers and learners fulfill them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. The sea had eaten into the soft limestone cliffs on which they had been built. While experts were, studying the_problem, the hotel and several houses disappeared altogether, sliding down the cliff and into the sea.Erosion (侵蚀) of the white cliffs along the south coast of England has always been a problem but it has become more serious in recent years. Dozens of homes have had to be abandoned as the sea has crept farther and farther inland. Experts have studied the areas most affected and have drawn up a map for local people, forecasting the year in which their homes will be swallowed up by the hungry sea Angry owners have called on the Government to erect sea defenses to protect their ernment surveyors have pointed out that in most cases, this is impossible. New sea walls would cost hundreds of millions of pounds and would merely make the waves and currents go further along the coast, shifting the problem from one area to another. The danger is likely to continue, they say. until the waves reach an inland area of hard rock which will not be eaten as limestone is. Meanwhile, if you want to buy a cheap house with an uncertain future, apply to a house agent in one of the threatened areas on the south coast of England. BA.She was too young to enjoy life.B.She was happy and loved life.C.She was very sophisticated.D.She was good at school.68) Tom knows his wife is not very interested in him because _____B____ .A.she is always doing houseworkB.she pays him no attention except to kiss him sometimesC.she is always playing tennisD.she is only interested in clothes and make-up69) How did the children behave towards Tom when they were with friends?CA.They were pleased and informal.B.They were rude and formal.C.They were polite and embarrassed.D.They were polite and relaxed.70) What do the family often do when Tom comes into the room?DA.They start laughing and look at him.B.They stop talking and look embarrassed.C.They start talking and laughing.D.They stop laughing and look at him.Passage 2Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester.A typical course consists of three classes per week for 15 weeks: while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester.Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year.It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs.Elections to positions in student organizations arouse muchenthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is performed by students who advise the academic authorities.Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous number of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activities.A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.71) Normally a student would at least attend ____B___ classes each week.A.36B.20C.12D.1572) According to the first paragraph an American student is allowed___B___ .A.to live in a different universityB.to take a particular course in a different universityC.to live at home and drive to classesD.to get two degrees from two different universities73) American university students are usually under pressure of workBecause ____A____.A.their academic performance will affect their future careersB.they are heavily involved in student affairsC.they want to observe university disciplineD.they want to run for positions of authority74) Some students are enthusiastic for positions in student organizationsProbably because ___C__.A.they hate the constant pressure and strain of their studiesB.they will then be able to stay longer in the universityC.such positions help them get better jobsD.such positions are usually well paid75) The student organizations seem to be effective in ____B___.A.dealing with the academic affairs of the universityB.ensuring that the students observe university regulationsC.evaluating students’ performance by bringing them before a courtD.keeping up the students’ enthusiasm for social activitiesPassage 3We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experiences are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in grading pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic abilities. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze andevaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is.We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.76) In the passage the author’s attitude towards “mixed-ability te aching”is ____C___.A.criticalB.questioningC.approvingD.objective77) By “held back” ( line 1) the author means “____D____”.A.made to remain in the same classesB.forced to study in the lower classesC.drawn to their studiesD.prevented from advancing78) The author argues that a teacher’s chief concern should be thedevelopment of the student’s ____B___.A.personal qualities and social skillsB.total personalityC.learning ability and communicative skillsD.intellectual ability79) Which of the following is NOT MENTIONED in the third paragraph? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For e_le, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you, you say: I wi sh I could help you but I’m short of money myself. In fact, you are not short of money, but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this.Is this really a lie? A scientific study of lying shows women are better liars than men, particularlywhen telling a “white lie” such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks terrible. However, this is only one side of the story.Other researches show that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.Research has also been done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie.It has been found that if they are sitting down at the same time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying I wish I were somewhere else now.26.This passage tells us that ________.A.telling lies is often necessary in order to avoid being defeated B.telling lies is often bad because people ought not to be dishonest C.telling lies is sometimes necessary in order not to hurt someone else’s feelings D.telling lies is not bad at all in most cases 27.In Paragraph 2, the sentence “Women are better liars than men do.” probably mea ns ________.A.women are better at telling lies than men B.women liars are better accepted than men C.women have a better intention when telling lies D.women tell fewer lies than men do 28.A “white lie” means ________.A.a lie that is pletely unbelievable B.a lie that is told with a good will C.a lie that is always believable D.a lie that often has an evil purpose 29.Politicians and businessmen are supposed to be skilled at telling the kind of lies ________.A.from which they may gain some advantages B.that seems to be believable C.that women are most likely to believe D.with which they can have better relationship with others 30.It can be concluded from the passage that ________.A.there is a simple way of finding out if someone is lying B.from some ways people behave we can know they are lying C.certain emotions are proof of lying D.in some situations women are most likely to think businessmen are dishonest Passage 3 Life reallyshould be one long journey of joy for children born with a world of wealth at their feet.Internationally famous child doctor Robert Colesis the world’s top e_pert on the influence of money on children. He has written a well-known book on the subject, “The Privileged Ones”, and his resea rch shows that too much money in the family can cause as many problems as too little.“Obviously there are certain advantages to being rich,” says the 33-year-old doctor, “such as better health, education and future work prospects. But the most important is the quality of family life.Money can’t buy love.” It can buy a lot of other things, however, and that’s where the trouble starts.Rich kids have so much to choose from that they often bee confused.Over-indulgence by their parents can make them spoilt. They tend to travel more than other children, from home to home and country to country, which causes feelings of restlessness.“But privileged children do have a better senseof their positions in the world,” adds Mr.Coles, “and they are more self-assured.” Therich children inherit the property from their parents and enjoy a high ine.So money will never be one of their problems.“However they will have a sense of isolation”, warns Dr Coles, “and they could suffer from the hardship of not being able to deal with the everyday world because they will never really be given the chance.Everything they have achieved is because of an accident of birth. There can be no tremendous inner satisfaction about that.” Today’s wealthy parents perhapsrealize their riches can be more of a heavy load than a happiness to their children. So the first thing for them to consider is to ensure that their families are as rich in love as they are in money.31.In his book “The Privileged Ones,” Dr Coles implies that _______.A.there are fewer problems in the rich family than the poor family B.rich children live a life of separation from the world C.rich children usually enjoy more love than poor children D.the quality of rich children’s family life may not be high 32.In the doctor’s view, _______.A.there are both advantages and disadvantages to being rich B.traveling a lot will be beneficial to children C.rich children usually have little confidence in themselves D.rich kids are often short of money because of their life of lu_ury 33.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A.Rich children usually lead a life of happiness.B.Rich children have earned what they have.C.Rich children tend to feel isolated.D.Rich children are hardly given too many material things.34.According to the author of the passage, _______.A.life is really a long journey of joy for rich children B.the rich children feel greatly satisfied with the property they inherit from their parents C.it is most important for wealth parents to make sure that their families are rich in love as well as in money D.today all the wealthy parents are sure of the problems their money can bring 35.It seems that the author of the passage _______what Dr.Coles says in the book “The Privileged Ones”.A.knows little about B.is doubtful about C.is opposed to D.agrees with Passage 4 Very old people do raise moral problems for almost everyone who es into contact with them.Their values —this can’t be repea ted too often — are not necessarily our values.Physical fort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important things. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a flat with decaying(腐烂) food covered by small worms, and an old person lying alone on bed, taking no notice of the worms. But is it interfering with personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of? Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we are in danger of carrying this concept of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety of the old.Indeed the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car.It needs more mechanical maintenance as it gets older. You can carry this parison right through to the provision of spare parts. But never forget that such operations are painful e_periences, however good the results. And at what point should you cease to treat theold body? Is it morally right to try to push off death by continuing the development of drugs to e_cite the forgetful old mind and to make the old body active, knowing that it is designed to die? You cannot ask doctors or scientists to decide, because so long asthey can see the technical opportunities, they willfeel bound to give them a try, on the principle that while there’s life, there’s hope. When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun.36.It is implied in Paragraph 1 that ______.A.very old people enjoy living with their relatives B.social services have nothing to do with very old people C.very old people would like to live alone so that they can have more personal freedom D.very old people are able to keep their rooms very clean 37.Some social workers think that _______.A.health and safety are more important than personal people 39.The word “it” in the last paragraph refers to_______.A.the conclusion you have e to B.whether age is happy or unpleasant C.your talk to the old people D.one’s money or one’s health 40.The author thinks that _______.A.medical decisions for old people should be left to the doctors B.old people can enjoy a happy life only if they are very rich C.the opinion that we should try every emotional scars.Often they relive these e_periences innightmares(噩梦).(51)Now American researchers think they are closeto developing a pill, which will help people forgetbad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening e_perience.They hope it might reduce, or possibly erase(抹去), the effect of painful memories. In November, e_perts tested a drug on people inthe US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals thatfi_ memories in the brain.(52) So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased. The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.(53)Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers’ troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.“Some memories can ruin people’s lives. They e back to you when you don’t want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually e with very painful emotions.” said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard MedicalSchool.“This could relieve a lot of that suffering.” (54)But those who are against the research say that it is very dangerous to change memories because memories give us our identity. They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.(55)“All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are.I’m not sure we want to wipe those memorie s out,” said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.Part V Writing (30 points) For You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1Almost every family buys at least one copy of a newspaper every day. Some people subscribe (订阅) to as many as two or three newspapers. But why do people read newspapers?Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings — battles lost and won, king or rulers overthrown(推翻) or killed — took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate. Today we can read in our newspapers of important events that occur in far away countries on the same day they happen.Apart from supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories and, of course, advertisements. The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space but it is worth the money, for news of their products goes into almost every home in the country. For those who produce newspapers, advertisements are also very important. Money earned from advertisements makes it possible for them to sell their newspapers at a low price and still make a profit.Newspapers often have information on gardening, cooking and fashion, as well as a small but very popular section on jokes and cartoons(漫画).41. They were very late on the Saturday evening, getting everything ready for the next day, and while they were busy they saw the glow of a fire start in the sky. By 3 o’clock on the Sunday morning, its glow had become so bright that Jane woke her husband to watch it. Pepys slipped on his dressing-gown and went to the window to watch it. It seemed fairly far away, so after a time he went back to bed. When he got up in the morning, it looked as though the fire was dying down, though he could still see some flames. So he set to work to tidy his room and put his things back where he wanted them. While he was doing this, Jane came in to say that she had heard the fire was a bad one. Three hundred houses had been burned down in the night and the fire was still burning. Pepys went out to see for himself. He went to the Tower ofLondon and climbed up on a high part of the buildings so that he could see what was happening. From there, Pepys could see that it was, indeed, a bad fire and that even the houses on London Bridge were burning. The man of the Tower told him that the fire had started in a baker’s shop in Pudding Lane; the baker’s house had caught fire from the over-heated oven and then the flames had quickly spread to the other houses in the narrow lane. So began the Great Fire of London, a fire that lasted nearly five days, destroyed most of the old city and ended, so it is said, at Pie Corner.46. What is the passage about?A. The Great Fire of London.B. Who was the first to discover the fire.C. What Pepys was doing during the fire.D. The losses caused by the fire.47. The baker’s house was burning quickly.Passage 3A new report of the United Nations shows that, if the present growth rate of 2 percent per year continues, today’s world population of 5.1 billion will hit 6.4 billion by the year 2023.What’s more, the great part of the growth — 9 of every 10 people added to the earth’s population — will be in the poor and undeveloped countries. These are the nations where providing enough food for billions of people already is proving to be a headaching problem.By the year 2023, today’s “have not”nations will have a total population of 5 billion people, nearly four fifths of the world’s population.Food isn’t the only problem that such a population explosion presents. The more people there are and the worse their living conditions, the greater grows the possibility of all kinds of social problems. In 1830, world population reached 1 billion. It took only 100 more years to add another billion to world population; just 30 more to add a third billion. And it took just 15 more years to reach the 4 billion mark in 1975.Actually, the world’s birth rate is falling. But so is death rate, as medical advances have made it possible for man to live longer than before. Such advances have also reduced baby death rate. Unless population growth is reduced, the world population may reach 12 billion in a century. Is the earth capable of providing a good life for so large a population?51. A population explosion will lead to ________.A. a lot of social problemsB. medical advancesC. a decrease in food productionD. a worse life in every country52. It took about ________ years for world population to grow from l billion to 3 billion.A. 100B. 115C. 130D. 14553. By the year 2023, today’s ________ nations will have a total population of 5 billion people, nearly four fifths of the world’s population.A. biggestB. AsianC. developingD. developed54. ________, the world may have a population of 12 billion a century.A. If man can live longer in the futureB. If the science of medicine is developing fast enoughC. If the population growth is not reducedD. If the earth is able to provide a good life for more people55. This passage tells us that ________.A. the United Nations thinks it possible to avoid a population explosionB. 5.1 billion people are living in the undeveloped countriesC. in advanced nations the population growth is being controlledD. the world’s population is increasingPassage 4A scientist who wants to predict the way in which consumers(消费者) will spend their money must study consumer behavior. He must obtain data both on the resources of consumers and on the motives that tend to encourage or discourage money spending. If an economist were asked which of the three groups borrow most — people with rising incomes, stable incomes, or decreasing incomes — he would probably answer: those with decreasing incomes. Actually, in the years 1947-1950, the answer was: people with rising incomes. People with decreasing incomes were next and people with stable incomes borrowed the least. This shows us that traditional assumptions(假设) about earning and spending are not always reliable. Another traditional assumption is that if people who have money expect prices to go up, they will hasten to buy. If they expect prices to go down, they will postpone buying. But research surveys have shown that this is not always true. The expectations of price increases may not stimulate buying. One typical attitude was expressed by the wife of a mechanic in an interview at a time of rising prices. “In a few months,”she said, “we’ll have to pay more for meat and milk; we’ll have less to spend on other things.”Her family had been planning to buy a new car but they postponed this purchase. Furthermore, the rise in prices that has already taken place may be disliked and buyer’s resistance may be produced. This is shown by the following typical comment: “I just don’t pay these prices; they are too high.”The investigations mentioned above were carried out in America. The condition most helpful to spending appears to be price stability. If prices have been stable and people consider that they are reasonable, they are likely to buy. Thus, it appears that the common business policy of maintaining stable prices is based on a correct understanding of consumer psychology(心理学). 56. According to the passage, if one wants to predict the way consumers spend their money, heshould ________.A. rely on traditional assumptions about earning and spendingB. try to encourage or discourage consumers to spend moneyC. carry out investigations on consumer behavior and get data on consumers’incomes andmoney spending motivesD. do researches in consumer psychology in a laboratory57. According to paragraph 2, one traditional assumption is that people with ________ incomesborrow most.A. averageB. stableC. decreasingD. rising58. According to paragraph 2, research surveys have proved that ________.A. price increases always stimulate people to hasten to buy thingsB. rising prices may make people put off their purchase of certain thingsC. women are more sensitive to the rising in prices than menD. the expectations of price increases often make buyers feel angry59. From the results of the surveys, the writer of this article ________.A. concludes that the saving and spending patterns in Great Britain are better than thosein AmericaB. concludes that the consumers always expect prices to remain stableC. concludes that maintaining stable prices is a correct business policyD. does not draw any conclusion60. Which of the following statements is always TRUE according to the surveys mentioned in thepassage?A. Consumers will put off buying things if they expect prices to decrease.B. Consumers will spend their money quickly if they expect prices to increase.C. The price condition has an influence on consumer behavior.D. Traditional assumptions about earning and spending are reliable.Part III Cloze (10%)Directions: There are 10 blanks in the following passage. For each blanks there are four choices marked A, B, C and D, you should choose one that best fits into the passage. Then mark the answer by blanking the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a pencil.Humans fall into two types when it comes to biological clock: the early-to-bed andearly-to-rise or late-night-loving who wake up long after the dawn. As any parent knows, teenagers may take the 61 to extremes. But their oversleeping does not relax them. Some researcher say: “: Biology is to blame.”The researchers surveyed the sleep habits of 25,000 Germans, 62 from 8 to 90, and found that as the teenage years wear on, the hour when kids go to bed and get up drifts later and later. It’s not that they’re sleeping more. 63 , it’s that their living clock is twisted. However, around age 20, the pattern reverses. The clocks tick 64 , and young adults begin to go to sleep and wake up earlier and earlier. Eventually, their clocks coincide with 65 of older people. The quick change may mark the biological end of teenage years. A difference 66 the timing in men and in women points to a biological cause, perhaps a hormonal effect.Because the living clock is 67 by exposure to sunlight, the researchers suspects the many hours some kids 68 staying in their dark rooms could push the clocks even later—a pattern that may be more common in industrialized societies. The researchers also discovered that rural residents, 69 lifestyle puts them in daylight more, retire and rise an hour earlier than city 70 . “We think this is only the tip of an iceberg that shows us the consequences of dim-light environments,”the researchers say.61. Throughout history the sea has served the needs of man. (71)The sea has provided man with food and a convenient way to travel to many parts of the world. Today, experts believe that nearly two-thirds of the world’s population live within eighty kilometers of the seacoast.(72) In the modern technological world the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive. Resources on land are beginning to grow less. The sea, however, still offers hope to supply many of man’s needs in the future.(73)The riches of the sea yet to be developed by man’s technology are impressive. Oil and gas explorations have existed for nearly thirty years. Valuable amounts of minerals such as iron, copper and so on exist on the ocean floor.Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. For example, warm temperature of the ocean can be used as the steam in a steamship. Sea may also offer a source of energy as electricity for mankind.(74)Technology is enabling man to explore even deeper under the sea. It is obvious that the technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. (75) By the year 2050, experts believe that the problems to explore the food, minerals and energy resources of the sea will have been largely solved.Part V Writing (15%)For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition on the topic:Global Shortage of Fresh Water Write at least 100 words and base your composition on the outline below and use the words for references as many as you can.1. 人们认为淡水是取之不尽的 (提醒:雨水、河水、井水......)2. 事实上淡水是非常紧缺的 (提醒:人口增长,工业用水增长,污染......)3. 我们应当怎么办解析Part I Vocabulary and Structure1. TranslationPart I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Some people argue that the pressure on international sportsmen and sportswom-en kills the essence of sport-the pursuit of personal excellence. Children kick a football around for fun. When they get older and play for local school teams, they become competi-tive but they still enjoy playing. The individual representing his country cannot afford to think about enjoying himself, and he has to think only about winning. He is responsible for an entire nation’s hopes, dreams and reputation. A good example is the football World Cup. Football is the world’s most important sport. Winning the World Cup is perhaps the summit of international sporting success. Mention “Argentina” to someone, and the chances are that he’ll think of football. In a sense, winning the World Cup “put Argentina on the map.”Sports fans and supporters get quite irrational about the World Cup. People in Eng-land felt that their country was somehow important after they won in 1966. Last year thousands of Scots sold their cars, and even their houses, and spent all their money travel-ing to Argentina, where the finals were played. So, am I arguing that international competition kills the idea of sport? Certainly not!(77) Do the Argentinian really believe that because eleven of their men proved the most skilful at football, their nation is in every way better than all others? Not really. But it’s nice to know that you won and that in one way at least your country is the best.1.What is the author’s main purpose in the passage?A.To prove that football is the world’s most important sport.B.To show that Argentina is better than all others.C.To compare Scotland with Argentina.D.To explain the role of sport.正确答案:D解析:此题考查的是考生对文章总体观点的认识。

For each of them, there are four suggested answers. Choose the one that you think is the best answer.Mark your ANSWER SHEET with a single line trough the center.Questions 11-15 are based on the following passage:Communication is the sending of information or news from one person to another. if human beings could not communicate with one another, each person would have to learn everything for himself, Although animals as well as men can communicate, so far as we know, they can express only the simple emotions like pain, joy, fear, huger of sounds and face movements, but we still have much to learn about these animal languages.Speech is the most important means of communication between people. But it is not the onlyone.Nor is it the oldest. We use facial expressions, gestures and hand movements to express ourfeelings and to send signals to other people. Animals use this “body language”a great deal.Thesign language used by deaf people is an example of communication without speech, while blind people communicate largely through touch and hearing.11,According to the passage, what would happen to us without communication?A.We should learn everything for ourselvesB.We would become unable to speak.C.We couldn’t live happily.D.We might have to do everything by ourselves.12.What does the passage say a about animals’communication?A.They have their advanced language in form of sound.B.They can express simple feelings such as hunger and pain.C.Some of them can communicate with people very well.D.All of them can use sound to express themselves.13.Which of the following statement is true?A.Humans do not have adequate knowledge about animal languages.B.We are now very much aware of animal languages.C.Most of animals use their facial expressiong.D.All animals make sounds to communicate with each other.14.What means of communication is used by most people?A.Facial expressions.B.Body movementsC.Speech.D.Body movement and speech.15.We can infer from the passage that the oldest form of communication between people is_____A.speechB.touch and hearingC.soundsD.body languageQuestions 16-20 are based on the following passage; No woman can be too rich or too thin. This saying often attributed to the late Duchess(公爵夫人)of Windsor embodies much of the odd spirit of our times.Being thin is deemed as such a virtue. The problem with such a view is that some people actually attempt to live by i. I myself have fantasies of slipping into narrow designer clothes.Consequently, I have been on a diet for the better——or worse——part of my life. Being rich wouldn’t be bad either, but that won’t happen unless an unknown relative dies suddenly in some distant land, leaving me millions of dollars.Where did we go off the track? When did eating butter become a sin,and a little bit of extra flesh unappealing,if not repellent? All religions have certain days when people refrain from eating.and excessive eating one of Christianity’s seven deadly sins. However, until quite recently, most people had a problem getting enough to eat. In some religious groups, wealth was a symbol of probable salvation and high morals.and fatness a sign of wealth and well-being.Today the opposite is true.We have shifted to thinness as our new mark of virtue. The result is that being fat——or even only somewhat overweight——is bad because it implies a lack of moralstrength.Qur obsession(迷恋)with thinness is also fueled by health coneerns. It is true that in this country we have more overweight people than ever before, and that,in many cases, being overweight correlates with an increased risk of heart and blood vessel disease. These diseases, however, may have as much to do with our way of life and our high-fat diets as with excess weight. And the associated risk of cancer in the digestive system may be more of a dictary problem——too much fat and a lack of fiber——than a weight problem. The real concern, then,is not that we weigh too much, but that we neither exercise enough norEat well.Exercise is necessary for strong bones and both heart and hing health.A balanced diet Without a lot of fat can also help the body avoid many diseases. We should surely stop paying so Much attention to weight.Simply being thin is not enough. It is actually hazardous if those who get (or already are )thin think they are automatically healthy and thus free from paying attention to their overall lifestyle.Thinness can be pure vainglory(虚荣)16.in the eyes of the author,an odd phenomenon nowadays is that___A.religious people are not necessarily virtuousB.looking slim is a symbol of having a large fortuneC,being thin is viewed as a much desired qualityD.the Duchess of Windsor is regarded as a woman of virtue17.Swept by the prevailing trend, the author____A,had to wear highly fashionable clothesB,had to seek help from rich distant relativesC,had to go on a dier for the greater part of her lifeD.could still prevent herself from going off the track18.In human history, people’s views on body weight___A,changed from time to timeB,led to different moral standardsC,varied between the porr and the richD,were elosely related to their religious beliefs19The author criticizes women’s obsession with thinness__A,from a historical and religious standpointB,from sociological and medical points of vewC,from an economic and educational perspectiveD,in the light of moral principles20.What’s the author’s advice to women who are absorbed in the idea of thinness?A.They should gain weight to look healthy.B.They should be more watehful for ratal diseases.C.They should be more concerned with their overall lifestyle.D.They should rid themselves fantasies about designer clothes.Qnestions 21-25 are baed on the following passage:Even plants can run a fever, especially when they’re under attack by insects or diseasc,But unlike humans, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet away——straight up.ADecade ago, adapting the infrared scanning technology developed for military purposes and other Satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to Determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let framers preciselhy target pesticide(杀虫剂)spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don’t have pest(害虫)problems.Even better,Paley’s Remots Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3,000feet at nigh,an infrared scanner Measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing Where plants were running “fevers” Farmers could then spot-spray,using 40 to 70 percent less Pesticide than they otherwise would. The bad news is that Paley’s company closed down in 1984,after 40 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would. The bad news is that Paley’s company closed down in 1984,after only three years,Farmers Resisted the new technology and long-term backers were hard to find. But with the renewed conccrn about pesticides on produce, and fefinements in infrared scanning,Paley hopes to get back into operation.Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works,”This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States,”says George Oerther of Texas A&M.Ray Jackson, who recently retird from the Departnt of Agriculture, thisks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only if Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago.21.Plants will emit an increased amount of heat when they are____A.sprayed with pesticidesB.facing an infrared scannerC.in poor physical conditionD.exposed to excessive sun rays22.In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely,we can use infrared scanning to___A,estimate the damage to the crops B.measure the size of the affected areaC.draw a color-coded mapD.locate the problem area23.Farmers can save a considerable amount of pesticide by___A.rcsorting to spot-sprayingB.consulting infrared scanning expertsC,transforming poisoned rainD.detecting crop problems at an carly stage24.The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some difficulties___A.the lack of offieial supportB.its high costC.the lack of financialD.its failure to help increase production25.Infrared scanning technology may be brought bafck into operation because of___A.the desire of farmers to improve the quality of their produceB.growing conccrn about the exccssive use of pesticides on cropsC.the forceful promotion by the Department of AgricultureD.full support from agricultural expertsQuestions 26-30 are based on the following passage:The appcal of advertising to buying motives can have both negative and positive effects.Consumers may be convinced to buy a product of poor quality or high price because of an advertisement. For example, some advertisers have appealed to people’s desire for better fuel economy for their cars by advertising automotive products that improve gasoline mileage. Some ofThe products work.Others are worthless and a waste of consumers’money.Sometimes advertising is intentionally misleading.A few years ago a brand of bread was offered to turned out that the bread was not dietetic(适合于节食的),but just regular bread,There fewercalories because it was sliccd very thin, but there were the same munber of calories in every loaf.On the positive side, emotional appeals may respond to a consumer’s real conccrns. Consider fire insurance.Fire insurance maybe sold by appealing to fear of loss. But fear of loss is the real reason for fire insurance. The security of knowing that property is protected by insurance makes the purchase of fire insurance a worthwhile investment for most people. If consumers consider the quality of the insureance plans as well as the message in the ads, they will bencfit from the advertising. Each consumer must evaluate her of his own situation. Are the benefits of the product important enough to justify buying it ? Advertising is intended to appcal to consumers, but it does not force them to buy the product. Consumers still control the final buying decision.26.Advertising can persuade the consumer to buy worthless products by__A.stressing their high qualityB.convincing him of their low priceC.maintaining a balance between quality and priceD.appealing to his buying motives27.The reason why the bread advertisement is misleading is that__A,thin slices of bread could contain more caloriesB,the loaf was cut into regular slicesC,the broad was not genuine broadD,the total number of calories in the loaf remained the same28.The passage tells us that__A.sometimes advertisements really sell what the consumer needsB.advertisements occasionally force consumers into buying things they don’t needC.the buying morives of consumers are controlled by advertisementsD.fire insurance is seldom a worthwhile investment29.It can be inferred from the passage that a smart consumer should__A.think carefully about the benefits described in the advertisementsB.guard against the deceiving nature of adverisementsC.be familiar with various advertising strategiesD.avoid buying products that have strong cmotional appeal30.The passage is mainly about___A.how to make a wise buying decisionB.ways to protect the interess of the consumerC.the positive and negative aspects of advertisingD.the function of advertisements in promoting salesPart Three ClozeDirections:For each blank in the following passage, choose the best answer from the choices givenbelow.Mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center. When television first began to expand, very few of the people who had become famous as radio commentators were able to be effective on television,.Some of the difficulties they exspericnced when were trying to 31 themselves to the new medium were technical. When working on radio.for example, they had become 32 to seeing on behalf of the listener. This 33 of seeing for others means that the commcntator has to be very good at talking.Above all,he has to be able to 34 a continuous sequence of visual images which 35 meaning to the sounds which the listenerhears. In the 36 of television, however, the commentator seeseverything with the viewer. His role, therefore,is completely different. He is there to make 37 that the viewer does not niss some point of interest, to help him focus on particular things, and to 38 the images on the television serene Unlike his radio colleague,he mustg know the 39 of silence and how to use it at those moments 40 the picrures speak for themselves.31.A.turn B adapt C. alter D modify32.A.experienced B.determined C established D accustomed33.A.efficiency B.technology C.art D performance34.A.inspire B.create C.cause D.perceive35.A.add B.apply C.affect D.reflect36.A.occasion B.event C.fact D.case37.A.definite B,possible C,sure D.clear38.A.exhibit B.demonstrate C.expose D.interpret39.A.purpose B.goal C.value D.intention40.A.if B.when C.which D.asPart Four Dialogue CompletionDirections:There are ten short incomplete dialogues between two speakers ,each followed by four choices marded A.B .C and D.Choose the answer that appropriately suits the conversational contest and best completes the dialogue. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You are required to choose the best answer from the four choices. Then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centerQuestions 16-20 are based on the following passage.I heard many parents complaining that their teen-age children are rebelling. I wish it were so. At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teen-agers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. (86) Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching at one another’s hands for reassurance. They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up huddled round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoons (茧) and entered a larger one.(87) It has become harder and harder for a teen-ager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teen-age market. These days every teen-ager can learn from the advertisements what a teen-ager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teen-ager who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come with the only kind of popularity that really counts.16. In the passage, the author wants to tell ________A. readers how to be popular with people aroundB. people how to understand and respect each otherC. parents how to control and guide their childrenD. teen-agers how to learn to decide things for themselves17. According to the author, many teen-agers think they are brave enough to act on their own, but, infact, most of them ______.A. are too young to do soB. are much afraid of getting lostC. dare not cope with problems single-handedD. have much difficulty understanding each other18. Which of the following is NOT true?A. There is no popularity that really counts.B. It is not necessarily bad for a teen-ager to disagree with his or her classmates.C. What many parents are doing is in fact hindering their children from finding their own paths.D. Most teen-agers claim that they want to do what they like to, but they are actually doing thesame.19. What does the author think of advertisement?A. Convincing.B. Influential.C. Instructive.D. Authoritative.20. During the teen-age years, one should learn to ________A. find one’s real selfB. get into the right reason and become popularC. differ from others in as many ways as possibleD. rebel against parents and the popularity waveQuestions 21-25 are based on the following passage. In order to learn a foreign language well, it is necessary to overcome the fear of making mistakes. If the primary goal of language use is communication, the mistakes are secondary consideration that may be dealt with gradually as awareness of those mistakes increases. On the other hand, students should not ignore their mistakes. (88) The language learner may observe how native speakers express themselves, and how native expressions differ from the way the learner might say them. For example, a Spanish speaker who has been saying “1 do it” to express willingness to do something in the immediate future, could, by interacting with native speakers of English, observe that native speakers actually say “I’ ll do it”. The resulting discrepancy can serve as a basis for the student to modify his way of using the present tense in English. But a student who is unwilling to interact in the first place would lose this opportunity to learn by trial and error.21. According to the passage, foreign language students should not worry too muchabout making mistakes because ________A. native speakers will ignore their mistakesB. communication is the primary goal of language learningC. native speakers like foreign students who try to learn their languageD. everyone makes mistakes when trying to communicate in a strange language22. The passage indicates that the present tense in English is _________A. basically the same in English as it is in SpanishB. not the most difficult problem for foreign studentsC. not used to express a desire to do something in the immediate futureD. used with some verbs but not with others to express future intention23. The author thinks that language learners can reduce the number of their mistakes by _____A. asking native speakers for explanationsB. reading good books in the foreign languageC. speaking without regard to native speakersD. comparing their speech with that of native speakers24. The passage implies that foreign students who do not interact with native speakers will not _ __.A. have to worry about making mistakesB. learn very much about the foreign cultureC. learn about the history of the foreign languageD. take advantage of available language models25. The author's major conclusion about the function of mistakes in foreign language learning is that .A. mistakes do not interfere with communicationB. learners are often very afraid of making mistakesC. mistakes are not important in the process of learning a languageD. making mistakes can help the learner discover the rules of the languageQuestions 26-30 are based on the following passageDuring a state of deep relaxation, several physiological changes take place in the body: the body’s oxygen consumption is reduced; the heart beat decreases; muscle tension and sweating ease, and there is decreased sympathetic (交感的) nervous system activity. This restful state not only allows the body to repair and restore itself, but it has a calming effect on the consciousness. How to achieve this state of relaxation, however, is a matter of opinion, and in some medical circles, a matter of controversy. A recent report by Dr. David Holmes of the University of Kansas in the journal “American psychologist” said that simple sitting in an armchair has just as many beneficial characteristics for the body as meditation () does. Researchers of other relaxation techniques disagree. These experts believe that more structured techniques, such as meditation, lead to a condition of deep relaxation.(89) The debate goes on. but one thins appears to be clear: the relaxation response can be reached by a number of methods, and the methods themselves are not as important as getting there. One day, one method may work best; on another day, an alternative method may be more appropriate. Once you are aware of all the methods, you can find the one that works best for you. Some of the relaxation techniques are meditation, autoanalysis (自我心理分析) and progressive muscle relaxation response than just sitting quietly in a chair, they have the added benefit of structure and discipline, and for these reasons appear to be more effective for most individuals.26. The passage indicates that a state of deep relaxation is not only good for one’s body, but alsobeneficial to ________A. heart beatB. consciousnessC. muscle tensionD. sympathetic nervous system27. People seem to agree that ________A. sitting in an armchair benefits a person as meditation doesB. what people are struggling for is a state of deep relaxationC. to achieve a state of deep relaxation is possible through various meansD. structured consciousness relaxation techniques are more beneficial for a person28. In the third paragraph, the phrase ?°getting there?± most probably meansA. arriving at one’s destinationB. getting what one wants mostC. reaching a state of deep relaxationD. finding out a suitable relaxation technique29. As far as relaxation is concerned, the author indicates that ?a_____A. aims are more important than meansB. means are more important than aimsC. some relaxation techniques are better than othersD. more and more people are interested in relaxation techniques30. The author’s attitude toward relaxation is best described asA. criticalB. objectiveC. optimisticD. subjectiveQuestions 31-35 are based on the following passage.I am not a computer expert. 1 never learned much in the way of math. And I am quite puzzled by things like engineering or electronics. Then why am I able to write about computers? I can write on this subject because of these shortcomings. The last two years of learning has been a severe test for me. By hard work I have managed to learn enough to use computers fairly well, and to work with people who know a great deal more than I. Since I have learned all this at such personal cost, I would like to share my knowledge with others. The best way to learn is to take a course. However, many people do not have the time for this. They will have to find some other way to get basic information. I hope to be able to help them by writing about some of the things I have learned myself.I have a home computer on which I have learned in my own time. I have used it like a home study course. I have sat down with it day after day, night after night, I have forced it to give up some of its secrets. Now I can use it to do some of the work that I get paid for. And I can do this work in my own home, instead of in an office. Many people may soon be working on a computer at home, just as many now take in other people’s typing. Some things about computers are easier than you may fear. First, computers are logical. Things that at first seem difficult will make sense to you after you learn the rules. Second, it is really not hard to learn enough to use today’s machines. You do not need to be a great brain. But you do have to learn to think in new ways. And you do have to keep a good bit of information in your head. (90) Finally, there are many people around who are really enthusiastic about computers. These people are always happy to be of help.31. According to the passage, computers can best be described as ________A. difficultB. puzzlingC. logicalD. secret32. It can be inferred that the author had to _______ in order to write about computers.A. Learn electronicsB. study very hardC. learn from other peopleD. take a home study course33. The phrase ?°a great brain?± in the last paragraph most probably meansA. a great manB. a person with a big headC. a remarkable successD. an intelligent person34. It is implied that the author ________A. has got a great deal of help from othersB. has known a lot of things about computersC. has got enough knowledge about science and mathD. has known more about computers than her colleagues35. The main idea of the last paragraph is that to learn to use a computerA. must take enough courseB. should be with a clever brainC. is not so difficult as one thinksD. is hard to think in new waysPart Ill V ocabulary and Structure (20 minutes 15%)Directions: In this part there are 30 incomplete sentences. twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived tiU they were five years old.By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect.to live a further twenty years, during which custom, opportunity and health made it unusual for her to get paid work.Today women marry younger and have fewer ually a woman 's youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five years old and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty.Even while she has the care of children, her work is lightened by household appliances and convenience foods. This important change in woman 's life-pattern has only recendy begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position.Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity, and most of them took a full time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it.Today the school leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, andthough women tend to marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born.Very many more afterwards retum to full or part-time work.Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life, aid with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money, and running the home, according to the abilities and interests of each of them.第21题According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to_____ earthquakes in the Iranian city of Bam took a huge death toll —roughly 40, 000 people——largely because of the collapse of thousands of mud —brick buildings. If a group of researchers in India are successful, the nextearthquake might not be as destructive.British and Indian engineers are developing earthquake—proof housing using a cheap, universal material: bamboo.Thev designed a model house built around waterproof bamboo-sheet roofing and bamboo-reinforced concrete walls. To test the structure, the engineers, sponsored by the U.K.Depart-ment of qnternational Development, took it to the Earthquake Engineering and Vibration Re-search Centre in Bangalore, which has a state.of-the-art earthquake simulator(模拟装置). The researchers shook the house with five successive 30-second pulses, being equal to 7.8 on the Richter(里氏)scale. The simulation was more than 10 times as violent as the Bam earth-quake.yet the house emerged undamaged."We didn 't even crack the paint, ”says engineer Paul Follett.of Britain’s Timber Research and Development Association.By some estimates, more than a binion people already live in bamboo structures. The innovation lies in developing ways to exploit bamboo 'S spring.Easily pre-built, fire resistant, and far lighter than steel, bamboo.based structures could be assembled in three weeks and last 50 vears. At five dollars a square foot, they would last roughly half as much as brick-and-block constructions.Follett says the project will follow an"open source”model: "Whatever is developed is freely available for the common good.”第26题Thousands of people died in the Bam earthquake mainly because_____ .A.the earthquake occurred in the cold DecemberB.many mud.brick houses collapsedC.the earthquake reached 7.8 0n the Richter scaleD.bamboo houses hadn 't been built yet答案: B第27题The phrase"a universal material”(Line 5, Paragraph l)refers to a material that can be found_____ .A.everywhere in IndialB.in the universeC.in a universityD.in a unique place答案: A第28题What was the result of the test?A.The shake lasted 1 50 seconds.B.The simulation was over 10 times as violent.C.The paint was cracked.D.The model remained undamaged.答案: D第29题The researchers have been working hard toA.reduce the damage by earthquakesB.explore the functions of bambooC.build bamboo houses for a billion peopleD.design bamboo house models答案: D第30题Which of the following are the advantages of bamboos in building houses?Ⅰ、Cheap to get.
