出错点二第四题选择题,第10小题对“I’d like to..”

Mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET by drawing a thick line across the corresponding letter in the brackets.?Text 1?The dog, called Prince, was an intelligent animal and a slave to Williams. From morning till night, when Williams was at home, Prince never left his sight, practically ignoring all other members of the family. The dog had a number of clearly defined duties, for which Williams had patiently trained him and, like the good pupil he was, Prince lived for the chance to demonstrate his abilities. When Williams wanted to put on his boots, he would murmur “Boots” and within seconds the dog would drop them at his feet. At nine every morning, Prince ran off to the general store in the village, returning shortly not only with Williams' daily paper but with a half?ounce packet of Williams' favorite tobacco, John Rhiney's Mixed. A gun?dog by breed, Prince possessed a large soft mouth specially evolved for the safe carrying of hunted creatures, so the paper and the tobacco came to no harm, never even showing a tooth mark.?Williams was a railwayman, an engine driver, and he wore a blue uniform which smelled of oil and oil fuel. He had to work at odd times —“days”, “late days” or “nights”. Over the years Prince got to know these periods of work and rest, knew when his master would leave the house and return, and the dog did not waste this knowledge. If Williams overslept, as he often did, Prince barked at the bedroom door until he woke, much to the annoyance of the family. On his return, Williams' slippers were brought to him, the paper and tobacco too if previously undelivered.?A curious thing happened to Williams during the snow and ice of last winter. One evening he slipped and fell on the icy pavement somewhere between the village and his home. He was so badly shaken that he stayed in bed for three days; and notuntil he got up and dressed again did he discover that he had lost his wallet containing over fifty pounds. The house was turned upside down in the search, but the wallet was not found. However, two days later—that was five days after the fall—Prince dropped the wallet into William's hand. Very muddy, stained and wet through, the little case still contained fifty?three pounds, Williams' driving license and a few other papers. Where the dog had found it no one could tell, but found it he had and recognized it probably by the faint oily smell on the worn leather.?46. How did the dog perform his duties?C?[A] He was delighted to show them off.?[B] He did his best but was not often successful.?[C] He did them quickly to get them over.?[D] He had few opportunities to do them. ??47. What does the passage tell us about gun dogs?C?[A] They are the fastest runners of all dogs.?[B] Their teeth are removed when they are young.?[C] They can carry birds, etc. without hurting them.?[D] They breed well, producing many young dogs. ??48. As a result of Williams' work .D?[A] he did not get enough sleep?[B] there was an oily smell from his clothes?[C] the dog grew accustomed to travelling by train?[D] the dog was confused about the time of the day??49. It upset Williams' wife and family when .B?[A] Williams had to go to work at night?[B] the dog made too much noise in the house?[C] Williams made them all get up early?[D] the dog would not let them see the newspaper??50. Williams did not realise his loss for several daysbecause .?B[A] he trusted the dog to find the wallet?[B] he was unconscious all that time?[C] he thought the wallet was in the house?[D] he had no occasion to feel in his pockets?Text 2?About ten men in every hundred suffer from colour blindness in some way; women are luckier only about one in two hundred is affected in this manner. There are different forms of colour blindness. A man may not be able to see deep red.He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green—a strange world indeed.?In certain occupations colour blindness can be dangerous and candidates are tested most carefully. For example, when fighting at night, soldiers use lights of flares to signal to each other. A green light may mean “Advance” and a red light may mean “Danger! Keep back!”, You can see what will happen if somebody thinks that red is green! Colour blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”, These help to see in a bright light and to tell the difference between colours. There are also millions of “rods” but these are used for seeing when it is nearly dark. They show us shape but not colour. Wait until it is dark tonight, then go outside. Look round you and try to see what colors you can recognize.?Birds and animals which hunt at night have eyes which contain few or no cones at all, so they cannot see colours. As far as we know, bats and adult owls cannot see colours at all onlylight and dark shapes. Similarly cats and dogs cannot see colours as well as we can.?Insects can see ultra?violet rays which are invisible to us, and some of them can even see X?rays. The wings of a moth may seem grey and dull to us, but to insects they may appear beautiful, showing colours which we cannot see. Scientists know that there are other colours around us which insects can see but which we cannot see. Some insects have favorite colours. Mosquitoes like blue, but do not like yellow. A red light will not attract insects but a blue lamp will.?51. Among people who suffer from colour blindness, .D?[A] some may see everything in shades of green?[B] few can tell the difference between blue and green?[C] few may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades of green?[D] very few may think that everything in the world is in green??52. When millions of rods in our eyes are at work in darkness we can see.?C[A] colours only?[B] shapes and colours?[C] shapes only?[D] darkness only??53. According to the passage, bats and adult owls cannot see colours.?D[A] because they hunt at night?[B] because they cannot see light?[C] because they have no cones and rods?[D] because they have no cones??54. According to the passage, dogs and cats.A?[A] as well as human beings can not see some colours?[B] have fewer cones than human beings?[C] have less rods than human beings?[D] can see colours as well as human beings??55. Which of the following is not true about insects?C?[A] Insects can see more colours than human beings.?[B] Insects can see ultra?violet rays which are invisible to men.?[C] All insects have their favorite colours.?[D] The world is more colorful to insects than to human beings. ?Text 3?A child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as rule, to have it retold in identically the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as sacred texts. It is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what, in the actual circumstances of the time and the individual child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better.A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or arousing his sadistic impulses. T o prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often guilty of cruelty than those who had not. Aggressive, destructive, sadistic impulses every child has and, on the whole, their symbolic verbal discharge seems to be rather a safety valve than an incitement to overt action. As to fears, there are, I think, well?authenticated cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy stories. Often, however, this arises from the child having heard the story once. Familiarity with the story by repetition turns thepain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered.?There are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two?headed dragons, magic carpets, etc., do not exist; and that, instead of indulging his fantasies in fairy tales, the child should be taught how to adapt to reality by studying history and mechanics. I find such people, I must confess, so unsympathetic and peculiar that I do not know how to argue with them. If their case were sound, the world should be full of madmen attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a broomstick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their enchanted girl friend.?No fairy story ever claimed to be a description of the external world and no sane child had ever believed that it was.?56. In the writer's opinion, a fairy tale .?B[A] cannot be read to children without variation because they find no pleasure in it?[B] will be more effective if it is adapted by parents?[C] must be made easy so that children can read it on their own?[D] is no longer needed in developing children's power of memory??57. According to the passage, some people who are openly against fairy tales argue that .?C[A] fairy tales are harmful to children in that they show the primitive cruelty in children?[B] fairy tales are harmful to children unless they have been adapted by their parent[C] fairy tales increase a tendency to sadism in children?[D] children who have read fairy stories pay little attention tothe study of history and mechanics58. In the writer's opinion to rid children of fears, fairy stories should be. B[A] told only once?[B] repeated many times?[C] told in a realistic setting?[D] presented vividly??59. In the writer's opinion, fairy stories .? B[A] have a very bad effect on children?[B] have advantages in cultivating children's imagniativity?[C] help children to come to terms with fears?[D] harm children greatly??60. According to the passage, which of the following statement is not true about fairy stories?? D[A] If children indulged his fantasies in fairy tales instead of beingtaught how to adapt to reality by studying history and mechanics the world should be full of madman. ?[B] Children can often be greatly terrified when the fairy story is heard for the first time. ?[C] Fairy tales may beneficially direct children's aggressive, destructive and sadistic impulses. ?[D] Fairy tales are no more than stories about imaginary figures with magical powers which has nothing to do with external world. ?Part B?Directions: ?Read the texts from an article in which five people talked about smoking. For questions 61 to 65, match the name of each person (1 to 5) to one of the statements (A to G) given below.Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.Hadley? If you smoke and you still don't believe that there's a definite link between smoking and bronchial troubles, heart disease and lung cancer, then you are certainly deceiving yourself. Just have a look at those people in hospital with these diseases and count how many of them do not smoke, you may be surprised at the number. Even these few people might be passive smokers without realising it.Randy?Tobacco is a wonderful commodity to tax. It's almost like a tax on our daily bread. In tax revenue alone, the government of Britain collects enough from smokers to pay for its entire educational facilities. So while the authorities point out ever so carefully that smoking may be harmful, it doesn't do to shout too loudly about it.Sampson? The advertising of tobacco is one of the problems. We are never shown pictures of real smokers coughing up their lings early in the morning. That would never do. The advertisements always depict handsome, clean?shaven young men. They suggest it is manly to smoke, even positively healthy! Smoking is associated with the great open air life, with beautiful girls, true love and togetherness. What utter nonsense!?Rowley?Of course tobacco can help government to raise money. However, while money is eagerly collected in vast sums with one hand, it is paid out in increasingly vaster sums with the other. Enormous amounts are spent on cancer research and on effortsto cure people suffering from the disease. Countless valuable lives are lost. In the long run, there is no doubt that everybody would be much better off if smoking were banned altogether.Bernice?Smoking can provide constant consolation. When I feel worried or nervous, I just get a cigarette and everything seem to get right. After a day's hard work, the thing I want to do most is smoking. It can be even better with a cup of coffee. It's so enjoyable and relaxing that it relieves stresses of every day life. So why bother to ban it and take the pleasure from us.?Now match each of the people (1 to 5) to the appropriate statement.?Note: there are two extra statements.?61. Hadley C62. Randy?B63. Sampson?E64. Rowley D ?65. Bernice AStatements?[A] Smoking brings many psychological benefits. ?[B] T obacco is an important source of income to the government. ?[C] Smoking is sure to cause diseases.?[D] It's a short?sighted policy to depend on tobacco for money.[E] The advertisement for it is dishonest and harmful. ?[F] The tobacco industry makes high?quality advertisement for smoking. ?[G] It's doubtful whether there is link between smoking and cancer.Section Ⅳ Writing (40 minutes)You should write your responses to both parts on ANSWER SHEET 1.??Part A?You go to the railway station to meet one of your friends, and the train has not arrived yet, so you have to leave him a note on the clipboard, from which he will learn how to find you.?Part B?Read the following material and write a short essay of about 150 words under the title “Should Men Be Forced by Law to Do Half the Housework?”The Austrian parliament will shortly be considering a draft law designed to compensate women after a divorce if their former husbands never helped them with the housework.Last week the German Green Party went even further, demanding a new law to make couples share the chores fifty?fifty if both partners were at work. The German paper Bild said a third of German women did all the housework on their own.?Academics here in Britain talked of reversing what they called the“Allerednic effect”—that's “Cinderella” backwards?—in which a prince marries a princess and turns her into a scullery maid.?So is it time for men to clean up their act? Or should the lawmakers leave it all well alone??Joining Laurence Zavriew for the Europewide debate are from Rome the Italian journalist Carlo di Blasio, and in the Netherlands Kerstin Schweighoefer, correspondent of the German newsmagazine focus.?
Part I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by somequestions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide 0,7 the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:As the National Park Service celebrates its 100th anniversary 〔周年纪念〕, President Barack Obama has announced the establishment of one new national monument, and the expansion (扩大) of another. In Maine, more than 87,500 acres of forest will become government-protected parkland for the first time. In Hawaii, a national monument created by President George W. Bush in 2006 will expand to about 582,578 square miles, four times its current size.Obama has now created or enlarged 26 national monuments during his presidency. As a result, his administration says, Obama has protected more of the nation's land than any other president has. But some residents and officials, in both Maine and Hawaii, object to the plans. (76) They say their local economies depend on the use of these areas. In establishing this monument, Obama took the side of conservationists (自然资源保护者) who want laws to protect wild lands. Creating a national park usually 1/ 48requires the approval of Congress. But a 1906 federal law allows the president to establish national monuments on his own.The land's new status as a monument means that mining and drilling operations are forbidden there. (77) It may also severely limit activities such as logging, road-building, and hunting. Some of Maine's politicians who want to protect the state's logging industries say Obama should not have acted alone. Contemporaries believe that the odd carvings (雕刻) above the Queen Street entrance were actually caricatures (漫画) of councilors at the time.Lennox even included himself in the caricatures, on the west side of the central arch (拱门), and left a strange signature in the stonework of the link portions of the building. The third City Hall was originally used as councilors' offices and legal offices, but it is used only as a courthouse today. When the fourth City Hall (the one we know today) was declared open in 1965, Old City Hall was threatened to be pulled down. These languages include French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. The common people in ancient Rome spoke (25)________ is referred to as Vulgar Latin, an informal speech, as opposed to the classical Latin of the more educated. Most language experts agree that Vulgar Latin is the chief source of the Romance languages.Medieval Romances were tales (26) __________(write)primary in French verse about brave heroes. The notion of having a romance with another person is thought (27) __________(develop) sometime during the Middle Ages. In the late 18th century and on through the 19th, a romance was not a love story (28) _________ a work of prose fiction that contained far-fetched, mysterious events. Astronomers employ the electromagnetic spectrum(电磁光谱)to study the universe, but objects that do not radiate in the electromagnetic spectrum will go ___34____. But now we know how to detect gravitational waves, which can help us detect and study some of the most energetic cosmic phenomena.“Gravitational waves provide a completely new way of looking at the universe and the ability to detect them has the ___35___ to revolutionize astronomy” said Hawking. “The discovery is the first observation of black holes merging. The observed __36____ of this system are consistent with predictions about black holes that I made in 1970 in Cambridge.”However, this discovery also presents a puzzle for astrophysicists. The mass of each of the black holes are larger than expected for those formed by the gravitational __37_____ of a star---so how did both of these black holes become so massive? This question touches on one of the biggest mysteries ___38___ black hole evolution. Currently, astronomers are having a hard time understanding how black holes grow to be so massive. On the one end of the scale, there are “stellar mass(恒星质量)” black holes that form immediately after a massive star explodes, ___39____ an extremely bright light. And we also have an abundance of evidence for the existence of the super-massive that live in the centers of most galaxies. There is a disconnect, however. If black holes grow by merging and consuming stellar matter, there should be evidence of black holes of all sizes, but “intermediate mass” black holes and black holes of a few dozen solar masses are ____40____ rare, throwing some black holes evolution theories into doubt. One thing is clear, however. This is the first time that we’v e acquired direct evidence of a black hole merger. So it’s good to know we’re on the right track.III. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.Cowboy or spaceman ? A dilemma for a children’s party, perhaps. But also a question for economists, argued Kenneth Boulding, in an essay published in 1966. We have run our 41 , he warne d, like cowboys on the open grassland: taking and using the world’s resources,42 ____ that more lies over the horizon. But the Earth is 43 a grassland than a spaceship---a closed system, alone in space, carrying exhaustible supplies. We need, said Boulding, an economics that takes seriously the idea of environmental 44 . In the half century since his essay, a new movement has responded to his challenge. “Ecological economists,” as they call themselves, want to 45 __ its aims and assumptions. What do they say -- and will their ideas take off?To its 46 , ecological economics is neither ecology nor economics, but a mix of both. Their starting point is to recognize that the human economy is part of the natural world. Our environment, they note, is both a source of resources and a sink for wastes. But it is 47 in traditional textbooks, where neat diagrams trace the flows between firms, households and the government as though nature did not exist. That is a huge mistake. There are two ways our economies can grow, ecological economists point out: through technological change, or through maximum use of resources. Only the 48 , they say, is worth having. They are suspicious of GDP (gross domestic product), a simple 49 which does not take into account resource exhaustion, unpaid work and countless other factors.50 , they advocate more holistic approaches, such as GPI (genuine progress indicator),a composite(复合的)index that include things like the cost of pollution, deforestation and car accidents. While GDP has kept growing, global GPI per person 51 in 1978: by destroying our environment, we are making ourselves poorer, not richer. The solution, according to experts, lies in a “steady-state” economy, where the use of materials and energy is held 52 .Mainstream economists are not 53 . GPI, they point out, is a subjective standard. And talk of limits to growth has had a bad press since the days of Thomas Malthus, who predicted in the 18th century, wrongly, that overpopulation would lead to famine. Human beings find solutions to some of the most annoying problems. But ecological economists 54 self-satisfaction. In 2009, a paper in Nature argued that human activity is already 55 safe planetary boundaries on issues such as biodiversity and climate change. That suggests ecologist economists are at least asking some important questions, even if their answers turn out to be wrong.41. A. grassland B. nation C. economy D. spaceship42. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)Every April I am troubled by the same concern -- that spring might not occur this year. The landscape looks dull, with hills, sky and forest appearing gray. My spirits ebb, as they did during an April snowfall when I first came to Maine 15 years ago. "Just wait," a neighbor advised. "You'll wake up one morning and spring will just be here."And look, on May 3 that year I awoke to a green so amazing as to be almost electric, as if spring were simply a matter of flipping a switch. Hills, sky and forest revealed their purples, blues and green. Leaves had unfolded and daffodils were fighting their way heavenward. Then there was the old apple tree. It sits on an undeveloped lot in my neighborhood. It belongs to no one and therefore to everyone. The tree's dark twisted branches stretch out in unpruned(未经修剪的)abandon. Each spring it blossoms so freely that the air becomes filled with the scent of apple.Until last year, I thought I was the only one aware of this tree. And then one day, in a bit of spring madness, I set out with pruner to remove a few disorderly branches. No sooner had I arrived under the tree than neighbors opened their windows and stepped onto their porches. These were people I barely knew and seldom spoke to, but it was as if I had come uninvited into their personal gardens. My mobile-home neighbor was the first to speak."You're not cutting it down, are you?" she asked anxiously. Another neighbor frowned as I cut off a branch. "Don't kill it, now," he warned. Soon half the neighborhood had joined me under the apple tree. It struck me that I had lived there for five years and only now was learning these people's names, what they did for a living and how they passed the winter. It was as if the old apple tree was gathering us under its branches for the purpose of both acquaintanceship and shared wonder. I couldn't help recalling Robert Frost's words:The trees that have it in their pent-up budsTo darken nature and be summer woodsOne thaw led to another. Just the other day I saw one of my neighbors at the local store. He remarked how this recent winter had been especially long and complained of not having seen or spoken at length to anyone in our neighborhood. And then, he looked at me and said, "We need to prune that apple tree again."56. By saying that “my spirits ebb” (Para. 1), the author means that _________________.A.he feels relievedB. he feels blueC. he is surprisedD. he is tired57. The apple tree mentioned in the passage is most likely to _________________.A. be regarded as a delight in the neighborhoodB. have been abandoned by its original ownerC. have been neglected by everyone in the communityD. be appealing only to the author58. It can be inferred that the author’s neighbor mentioned in the last paragraph most cared about _______________.A.when spring would arriveB. how to pass the long winterC. the neighborhood gatheringD. the pruning of the apple tree(B)Mount Cook National Park is home of the highest mountains and the longest glaciers. This is one of the most critical yet debatable social policy questions. In many ways, our social statistics overstate the degree of hardship. Unemployment does not have the same horrible con sequences today as it did in the 1930’s when most of the unemployed were primary breadwinners, when income and earnings were usually much closer to the margin of survival, and when there were fewer effective social programs for those failing in the labor market. Increasing wealth, the rise of families with more than one wage earner, the growing dominance of secondary earners among the unemployed and improved social welfare protection have unquestionably relieved the consequences of joblessness. Earnings and income data also overestimate the scale of hardship. Among themillions with hourly earnings at or below the minimum wage level, the majority are from multiple-earner, relatively well-off families. Most of those counted by the poverty statistics are elderly or handicapped or have family responsibilities which keep them out of the labor force, so the poverty statistics are by no means an accurate indicator of labor market problems.Yet there are also many ways our social statistics underestimate the degree of labor-market-related hardship. The unemployment counts exclude the millions of fully employed workers whose wages are so low that their families remain in poverty. Low wages and repeated or long-time unemployment frequently interact to weaken the capacity for self-support. Since the number experiencing joblessness at some time during the year is several times that unemployed in any month, those who suffer as a result of forced idleness can equal or exceed average annual unemployment, even though only a minority of the jobless in any month really suffer. For every person counted in the monthly unemployment totals, there is another working part-time because of the inability to find full-time work, or else outside the labor force but wanting a job. Finally, income transfers in our country have always focused on the elderly, disabled, and dependent, neglecting the needs of the working poor, so that the dramatic expansion of cash and non-cash transfers does not necessarily mean that those failing in the labor market are adequately protected. As a result of such conflicting evidence, it is uncertain whether those suffering seriously as a result of labor market problems number in the hundreds of thousands or the tens of millions, and, hence, whether high levels of joblessness can be tolerated or must be counteracted(抵消)by job creation and economic stimulation. There is only one area of agreement in this debate—that the existing poverty, employment, and earnings statistics are inadequate for one of their primary applications, measuring the consequences of labor market problems.63. In Paragraph 2, t he author contrasts the 1930’s with the present in order to show that_____________.A. more people were unemployed in the 1930’sB. unemployment is more intolerable todayC. social programs are more in need nowD. income level has increased since the 1930’s64.Which of the following is true according to the passage?A.A majority of low-wage workers receive earnings from more than one job.B.Repetition of short-term unemployment mainly contributes to people’s loss of working capacity.C. Many unemployed people are from families where other members are working.D. Labor market hardship is understated because fewer individuals are jobless than counted.65.It can be inferred from the passage that the effect of income transfers is often not felt by _________________.A. those doing a low-paid, part-time jobB. children in single-earner familiesC. workers who have just retiredD. full-time workers who become unemployed66. Which of the following is the principal topic of the passage?A. What causes labor market problems that result in suffering.B. Why income statistics are imprecise in measuring degrees of poverty.C. When poverty, employment, and earnings figures agree with each other.D. How statistics give an unclear picture of the labor-market-related suffering.Section C(4×2=8分)Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.A. Even being good at getting others to fight most efficiently is not being civilized.B. Most people believe those who have conquered the most nations are the greatest.C. However, every year conflicts between countries and nations still claim thousandsof lives.D. And not only has it won, but also because it has won, it has been in the right.E. So there has been little time to learn in, but there will be oceans of time in which tolearn better.F. People don’t fight and kill each other in the streets, but nations still behave like savages. Most of the people who appear most often and most gloriously in the history books are great conquerors and generals, while the people who really helped civilization forward are often never mentioned. We do not know who first set a broken leg, or launched a seagoing boat, or calculated the length of the year but we know all about the killers and destroyers. People think so much of them that on all the highest pillars in the great cities of the world you will find the figure of a conqueror or a general. ____67_________It is possible they are, but they are not the most civilized. Animals fight, so do savages; so to be good at fighting is to be good in the way an animal or a savage is good, but it is not to be civilized. ____68_______. People fight to settle quarrels. Fighting means killing, and civilized peoples ought to be able to find some ways of settling their disputes other than by seeing which side can kill off greater number of the other side, and then saying that the side which has killed most has won. ___69______. For that is what going to war means; it means power is right. This is what the story of mankind has been like. But we must not expect too much. After all, the race of men has only just started. From the point of view of evolution, human beingsare very young indeed, babies of a few months old. Scientists assume that there has been life of some sort on the earth for about twelve hundred million years; but there have been men for only one million years, and there has been civilized men for about eight thousand years.____70_____. Taking man’s civilized past at about seven or eight hours, we may estimate his future at about one hundred thousand years. Thus mankind is only at the beginning of its whole a pretty beastly business, a business of fighting and killing. We must not expect even civilized peoples not to have done these things. All we can ask is that they will sometimes have done something else.第II卷(共50分)I.Summary (10分)Directions: Reading the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage with no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. It's not piano lessons or dance classes. Nowadays, the biggest extra-curricular activity is going to a tutor. "I spend about 800 Canadian dollars a month on tutors. It's costly," says Pat, a mother in Canada. However, she adds, "after finding out half my daughter's class had tutors, I felt like my child was going to fall behind because everyone else seemed to be ahead"Shelley, a mother of three, also has tutors constantly coming in and out of her home. "When I used to sit down with my children, it was hard to get them focused. I was always yelling. When I got a tutor once a week, they became focused for one entire hour and could get most of their homework done."Tutoring isn't simply a private school phenomenon. Nor is it geared only toward lower-achieving students. In Canada alone, seven percent of high school students reported using a tutor in 2010. That increased to 15 percent last year.Overall, parents hire tutors because they are worried schools are not meeting their expectations, but there is also a cultural shift. A special value is placed on education in Asia, where tutoring is viewed as an extension of the school day. As a large number of Asians emigrated to the West over the recent years, their attitudes towards education have had an impact.Another reason for the growth in business is parental frustration and their packed schedules. "A lot of parents just don’t have time to help their children with homework," says Julie Diamond, president of an American tutoring company. "Others couldn't help their children after Grade 3."There has been a shift in the attitudes, too. "Children used to get bullied (欺侮) for having a tutor," Diamond says. "Now it's becoming the norm to have one."Children don't seem to mind that they have a tutor. One parent feels surprised that so many of her child’s classmates have tutors. "For the amount we pay in tuition, they should have as much extra help as they need," she says. Still, she’s now thinking of getting a tutor. Why? Her daughter has actually asked for one.II. Translation(3+3+4+5=15分)Directions:Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.1.

But it’s likely the most universally known work offiction by an American author over the past 70 years. Lee was cited for hersubtle, graceful style and gift for explaining the world through a child’s eye,but the secret to the novel’s ongoing appeal was also in how many books thissingle book contained.“To Kill a Mockingbird” was a coming-of-age story, acourtroom thriller, a Southern novel, a period piece, a drama about class, and— of course — a drama of race.”All I want to be is the JaneAusten of South Alabama,” she once observed. The story of Lee is essentiallythe story of her book, and how she responded to it. She was a warm, vibrant andwitty woman who played golf, fished, ate at McDonald’s, fed ducks by tossingseed corn out of a Cool Whip tub, read voraciously, and got about to plays andconcerts. She just didn’t want to talk about it before an audience.“To Kill a Mockingbird” was aninstant and ongoing hit, published in 1960, as the civil rights movement wasaccelerating. It’s the story of a girl nicknamed Scout growing up in aDepression-era Southern town. A black man has been wrongly accused of raping awhite woman, and Scout’s fathe r, the resolute lawyer, defends him despitethreats and the scorn of many.Praised by The New Yorker as “skilled, unpretentious, and totally ingenious,” the bookwon the Pulitzer Prize and wasmade into a memorable movie in 1962.“Mockingbird” inspired ageneration of young lawyers and social workers, was assigned in high schoolsall over the country and was a popular choice for citywide, or nationwide, reading programs, although it was also occasionally removed from shelves forits racial content and references to rape.By 2015, sales topped 40 millioncopies. When the Library of Congress dida survey in 1991 on books that have affected people’s lives, “To Kill aMockingbird” was second only to the Bible.Lee herself became more elusive tothe public as her book became more famous. At first, she dutifully promoted herwork. She spoke frequently to the press, wrote about herself and gave speeches, once to a class of cadets at West Point. But she began declining interviews inthe mid-1960s and, until late in her life, firmly avoided making any publiccomment about her novel or her career. Her novel, while hugely popular, was not ranked by many scholars in the same category as the work of otherSouthern authors Decades after its publication, little was written about it inscholarly journals. Some critics have called the book naive and sentimental, whether dismissing the Ku Klux Klan as a minor nuisance in Maycomb oradvocating change through personal persuasion rather than collective action.Section 2: Chinese-English Translation (50 points) Translate the following passage into English.

2016年11月5日北京地区成人学位英语考试真题I.Reading ComprehensionPassage 1If Dakota Access Pipeline (输油管道) completed, it will carry nearly half a million barrels of oil across four states every day. Energy Transfer Partners (ETP), a Texas-based company behind the $3. 8 billion project hopes to finish construction this year. But the Standing Rock Sioux, an American Indian tribe (部落), is determined to stop the 1,172-mile pipeline from being built. (76) Both sides show no signs of backing down. The Dakota Access Pipeline was announced in 2014. A section of it will run near the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. A reservation is an area of land set aside for American Indians. The tribe says the construction threatens to destroy historical areas and ancient burial sites. They also say the pipeline could pollute their main water source, the Missouri River. In April, the Standing Rock Sioux began a protest against the project. They camped at the construction site. Since then, thousands of people, including people from other American Indian tribes, have traveled to the side to join the protest.ETP says that the pipeline will have built-in measures to protect against oil leaks. Workers will also monitor it remotely, and will be able to close valves (阀) within three minutes if leaks are detected.American Indians have been staging a nonviolent protest for months. The protest took a turn last week when police were called to keep the peace between protesters and armed security guards hired by the company.(77) Twenty-eight people have been arrested since then and charged with interfering with the pipeline construction.1. Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?A. The Dakota Access Pipeline will create more markets for oil and gas.B. The Dakota Access Pipeline will create many job opportunities.C. Because it will make many people lose their jobs.D. Because it will force many people to leave their homes.4. According to the passage, the workers can _____ in case of pipeline leaks.A. report to the local governmentB. ask people to leave the leak affected areasC. call 911D. close valves5. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?A. This pipeline will cross four states.B. This pipeline is 1,172 miles long.C. In Maine, more than 87,500 acres of forest will become government-protected parkland for the first time. In Hawaii, a national monument created by President George W. Bush in 2006 expand to about 582,578 square miles, four times its current size.Obama has now created or enlarged 25 national monuments during his presidency. As a result, his administration says, Obama has protected more of the nation’s land than any other president has. But some residents and officials, in both Maine and Hawaii object to the plans. (78) They say their local economies depend on the use of these areas. In establishing this monument Obama took the side of conservationists (自然资源保护者) who want laws to protect wild lands. Creating a national park usually requires the approval of Congress. But a 1906 federal law allows the president to establish national monuments on his own.The land’s new status as a monument means that mining and drilling operations are forbidden there. (79) It may also severely limit activities such as logging, road-building, and hunting. Some of Maine’s politicians who want to protect the state’s logging industries say Obama should not have acted alone. They say Washington should not tell the states how to use their land, especially when people’s jobs are at stake. Maine politicians Susan Collins say the president should have listened to Maine lawmakers and residents, as well as to the U.S Congress before making his decision. However, those who support the president’s decision say the establishment of the new monument will lead to new jobs through tourism.6.
It was daybreak when Jane woke up. She ate some berries and then walked along the stream, hoping to find a suitable place to guide the helicopter. She walked and walked, exhausted but full of hope. Suddenly, she spotted a huge flat rock. She managed to climb onto it and waited with patience. The helicopter appeared again. The nearer it got, the more she waved the yellow blouse. To her great joy, the helicopter didn’t miss Jane this time and it landed near the big rock slowly. Tom jumped off the helicopter and rushed towards Jane. They hugged each other tightly and burst into tears.

(1/2)Section ⅠEnglish-Chinese TranslationTranslate the following two passages into Chinese.Part A Compulsory Translation第1题Everyone knows that weddings—the most elaborate and costly form of old school pageantry still acceptable in modern society—are stupid expensive. But it turns out Americans are now blowing even more money than ever before on what’s supposed to be the most magical day of any couple’s life together. Money that, to be honest, could be spent on much, mu ch cooler stuff. The Knot released its annual wedding survey this week, with findings showing that couples are spending a mind-numbing average of $32,641 on matrimonial celebrations. The study includes data from nearly 18,000 pairs across the country. While the cost of a wedding varied greatly from city to city—reaching a nauseating high of $82,300 in Manhattan—the price was steep no matter where couples chose to get hitched. All this despite the fact that weddings (and marriages in general, honestly) can be a fairly impractical thing to invest in. Seriously, even 50 Cent doesn’t spend as much in a day as you’re spending on a reception band alone. Think about that.So rather than buying into the Marriage Industrial Complex on a union that may or may not work out, wouldn’t it make more sense to save your hard-earned money by forgoing the big ceremony for the major expenses you’re likely to face in married life? You know, like a mortgage. Or braces for your wallet-draining children-to-be. And if your fianceé is dead set on a fairytale wedding? You could always just blow your financial load on a plenty fulfilling single life. With nearly $33,000 to spend in the life of a singledom, you could get pretty far when it comes to amenities and entertainment. Perhaps the best part of being free from the shackles of wedding planning is the opportunity to treat yourself. Like, why drop $1,400 on a frilly dress you’ll wear once before it turns to moth food when you can rock the most expensive shoes of the season and look great doing it?And while weddings are supposed to be all about the happy couple, everyone knows that’s bull, because you have to feed your guests and provide them entertainment and put a roof over their heads for a couple of hours and likely go into debt doing it.In addition to simply having fun, there are some more practical ways to spend your wedding purse as well. For instance, purchasing and providing for a nice house cat rather than dropping major dough on finger bling intended for fending off hotties for the rest of your life. Fluffy won’t care if you bring home someone new every weekend—he’ll just hate everyone indiscriminately._________下一题(2/2)Section ⅠEnglish-Chinese TranslationTranslate the following two passages into Chinese.Part A Compulsory Translation第2题My teenage son recently informed me that there is an Internet quiz to test oneself for narcissism. His friend had just taken it. “How did it turn out?” I asked. “He says he did great!” my son responded. “He got the maximum score!”When I was a child, no one outside the mental health profession talked about narcissism. People were more concerned by inadequate self-esteem, which at the time was thought to lurkbehind nearly every issue. Like so many excesses of the 1970s, the self-love cult spun out of control and is now rampaging through our culture like Godzilla through Tokyo.A 2010 study in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science found that the proportion of college students exhibiting narcissistic personality traits – based on their scores on the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, a widely used diagnostic test – has increased by more than half since the early 1980s, to 30 per cent.In their book, The Narcissism Epidemic, psychology professors show that narcissism has increased as quickly as obesity has since the 1980s. Even our egos are getting fat. This is a costly problem. While full-blown narcissists often report high levels of personal satisfaction, they create havoc and misery around them. There is overwhelming evidence linking narcissism with reduced honesty and increased aggression. It’s notable for occasions like Valentine’s Day that narcissists struggle to stay committed to romantic partners, in no small part because they find themselves superior. The full-blown narcissist might reply, “So what?” But narcissism isn’t an either-or characteristic. It’s more of a set of progressive symptoms (like alcoholism) than an identifiable state (like diabetes). Millions of Americans exhibit symptoms, but still have a conscience and a hunger for moral improvement. At the very least, they really do not want to be terrible people.A healthy self-love that leads to true happiness builds up one’s intrinsic well-being, as opposed to feeding shallow cravings to be admired. Cultivating amour de soi requires being fully alive at this moment, as opposed to being virtually alive while wondering what others think. The soulful connection with another person, the enjoyment of a beautiful hike alone, or a prayer of thanks over your sleeping child could be considered expressions of self-love._________上一题下一题(1/2)Section ⅡChinese-English TranslationTranslate the following two passages into English.
