In-Text Citations
Include reference numbers in the paper to identify information from a source, whether in the middle of a sentence or at the end. Using superscript numbers (one-half space above the line, in a slightly smaller font size) is the preferred style, as in this example:

C h a p t e r16 Using CBE Style When Appropriate
16a Recognize the distinct documentation patterns of CBE style.
CBE (Council of Biology Editors) style presents information in the biological, physical, and mathematical sciences, disciplines for which reproducible results are especially important. Although CBE style emphasizes periodicals and books, it provides additional information on alternative sources, including maps, audiovisual materials, government documents, and electronic sources.

Format for CBE Citations
•Begin the first line of each entry at the left margin. •Begin each entry with the author’s or editor’s last name • Cite the complete title; use a colon and one space to separate the title from the subtitle. •Separate major sections of entries (author, title, publication information, and paging) with periods and single spaces. •For books, separate the place of publication from the publisher by a colon and a space; the publisher is separated from the year by a semicolon and a space; end with the total number of pages. • Double-space all entries.
16c Complete citations for the reference page.
Information for CBE Citations
1. Author(s) or Editor(s). Take the name or names from the title page of a book or from the first page of an article. 2. Title. Include full titles and subtitles, no matter how long. Oneword titles of scientific journals are presented in complete form 3. Additional information. Include second and subsequent edition numbers following the book’s title. 4. Facts of Publication. For books, include the place of publication, an abbreviated name of the publisher 5. Page Numbers. When citing only part of a source
