When you add it all up,you will probably see you spend a lot of your life consuming(消费) things.Consuming products is not necessarily bad. However, if we spend too much time doing it, we should look at it carefully.Imagine that you have a week off from school. You don't have to go toclass. However, in this week, you cannot spend any money—no shopping,no movies,no eating out.How would you spend your time? What things would bring you happiness? Perhaps you would take a walk with your best friend.Perhaps you would help a child read.Or you might spend time with your family. When we look back,it is likely that non-consuming experiences like these will be our most important memories. Why? Non-c onsuming activities are active, not passive. They don't come in a package. You make the experience yourself. For example, each person who reads to a child will have a different experience. The experience changes with the reader, the child, and the book. Similarly, when you have a conversation with a friend, you are actively creating an experience. The conversation that you have with your friend cannot be experienced or recreated by anyone else. However,if you watch a movie with a friend, you will each have apackaged experience. It requires no action and little interaction between the two of you.The environment we live in encourages us to have packaged experiences. We feel that we must consume because we believe that buying is doing. However, we can start a personal revolution(变革) against consumerism. How? By consuming less.We can ask ourselves what experiences bring us the greatest satisfaction. Then we can organize our lives so that we have more of those kinds of experiences.1.If consuming products takes too much time, we should .A.spend less moneyB.think about it carefullyC.organize our thingsD.go to convenience stores2.According to the passage, the writer believes that .A.we can say no to consumerism by consuming lessB.buying things can bring us the greatest satisfactionC.the environment seldom influences our shopping choicesD.consuming experiences will be our most important memories3.What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?A.To introduce some ways of enjoying our spare time.B.To encourage people to have more active experiences.C.To explain reasons behind people's shopping behavior.D.To share his personal experience in consuming products.(十一)(2017·浙江丽水中考)Think of a simple object—a piece of chalk, for example. Are you remembering its name, its shape, its color or its size? Another way is to do something different to your room.Turn a picture upside-down,or tie a sock around the door handle to remind(提醒) yourself of something to remember!1.At the beginning, the writer gives an example to .A.lead in the topic of the articleB.show the importance of chalkC.let readers remember the wordD.make readers know his favorite2.How many ways are mentioned to have a good memory in Paragraph 2?A.2.B.3. Over a year ago she had written another book, The Professor, and sent it to one publisher after another. Each publisher had sent it back, in a packet addressed to Currer Bell. And then Charlotte had sent it, in the same old packet, to another publisher, and then another, and got it back again.“Why didn't you change the paper on the packet, my dear?” I asked.Charlotte smiled. “I didn't think of it, papa. The worst day was when we were in Manchester, going to the eye doctor. Do you remember? The packet came back then. That was the day before I started writing Jane Eyre.”“Do you mean that you started writing Jane Eyre while I was lying in the dark room in Manchester?”“That's right, papa.”“But that's only six months ago, and here is the book in my hand!”“Yes, papa. It's important for kids to see that we all have responsibilities in the house, and families decide how they want their home to look, and how they are going to keep it looking like what they want.‖Other people believe that getting a reward encourages kids to do housework, and it also teaches them real world lessons about how we need to work to get money. Being short of space is a common problem for university libraries in China. However, this is not the only reason why students dislike their libraries being open to members of the public. They fear that the quietness of the libraries will be influenced because of visitors' rude behavior.Chen Jie, 18, a student in Tongji University, is one who would be against opening to the publ ic. ―I have been to a public library before. People were chatting loudly or speaking on cell phone so you can hardly read,‖ Chen said. She notices teachers doing serious reading and feels their concentration(专注)has influenced her. ―If too many strangers st ay here, the whole library will be a noisy place and it's difficult for us to study quietly,‖ she said. Will there be alternative(可替代的)ways to share those libraries? Where is the passage most probably taken from?A. A newspaper.B. A library guide.C. A story book.D. A notice board.DHave you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Companies like Google and Tesla have been designing and testing these cars, and the technology is there. So how? The cars have sensors(感应器)all around which can find other cars and objects in the road. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems(卫星导航系统)are used so the car knows how to get where you want to go. All you have to do is type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information that it receives from the sensors and cameras and works out when to speed up, stop and turn.Sound like your idea of heaven(天堂)? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while ‗driving' would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn't have to worry about remembering directions to where you're going. In addition, computers would also drive more safely than people — they would obey the rules and have quicker action times when in dangerous situations. However, there are many drawbacks of driverless cars. Computers would have difficulties making ethical(道德的)decisions: if a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn suddenly and potentially kill the car's passengers? Moreover, I personally find driving fun –I'd miss never driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to be made –should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times?I'm not certain I'd want a driverless car – but it's only a matter of time before they'll become more affordable and popular on our roads.12. It spread from Rome to China, which is from the West to the Far East.Traders travelling along the Silk Road carried silk, of course. Most readers know that his real name was Samuel Longhorne Clemens, but how many know where t he pen name “Mark Twain” came from? The answer shows Clemens' colourful early life before he became a writer. “Mark Twain” was the cry shouted on a ship when the ship entered a part of a river that was two fathoms(6 feet)deep. “Twain” is an oldfashioned way of saying “two”. Twain trained as a ship pilot on the Mississippi river for two years, a time that he wrote about in the humorous Life on the Mississippi(1883).The famous river would become an important theme in many of his works—who could forget the journey of Huck and Jim along it in his most famous book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn(1884)?With little education, he had to teach himself how to write stories. Whenever possible, he would go to public libraries. There he spent much time reading and thinking, which greatly helped him with his writing. On the other hand, his life experiences gave him wonderful material to write about and attract readers. Twain wrote in a style that has been called “local colour” because it shows great knowledge of local people and their customs. This gift is very clear in the two books for which Twain is still celebrated today:TheAdventures of Tom Sawyer(1876) and its follow-up The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which many people call “The Great American Novel”.The most amazing invention in the book is the voice of Huck himself. Architects﹡believe that they are all possibilities. The only thing for sureis that the houses will be as green as possible. The tree houseMany architects in the world would like to build a “treehouse.” Like a leaf, the surface of the house collects sunlightduring the day. One day the top ic turned to saying “I love you”. I was shocked to learnthat not one of my students had said this to their mothers, nor had their mothers said it to them. “Does your mom love you?” “Of course,” they answered.“How do you now?” was my logical question. They responded that their moms cooked and always told them what they were doing wrong to show their caring. I was greatly surprised .So mom’s cooking and critic i zing read out as “I love you”. “Then how do you say ‘I love you’ to her?” They agreed that gettin g good grades, followed by god jobs would be how they showed their love.I come from a culture where most people are expressive enough, so I repeated these questions in classes over time. Gradually, I began to get different response. Some of them had exchanged those sentiments* with their moms. One of my favorite stories of change came from a girl. When she came home from university, her mother met her at the door and hugged her. This had never happened before, but her mom said, “Now that you have gone I have more time to myself. I noticed that in some places mothers and children hug each other and I decided it was a good idea and that I would begin hugging you.”In my family we all say “I love you” a lot .While it is true that we often say the w ords without having great depth of feelings at that moment, it is almost like a blessing* we give each other. Those three little words carry a world of meaning, even when said as a greeting, but most especially if they are the last words we say to or hear from those we love.4. When you watch3-D movies or TV, you have to wear a special pair ofglasses. The 3-D glasses make the images from the screen look like they are there in the room with you.Three-dimensional, or 3-D, means having three dimensions*: width, height and depth. 3-D technology is based on the way the human brain and eyes work. Because the pupils of a person’s eyes are about 6.5cm apart, when we look at something, each eye sees it from a different angle*. Our eyes send the two images to our brain, and the brain puts them together. The small difference between the image from the right eye and the image from the left eye allows us to see depth. When we view media such as pictures and television in two dimensions, each eye gets the same information. That is because the image has no real depth, and there is only one way of viewing it. So the goal of 3-D technology is to get a different image into each eye of the viewer. It uses two film projectors. One projects a left eye image and the other projects a right eye image. The 3-D glasses allow us to see a different image in each eye. While watching 3-D films, we feel that we are actually in the same environment as the things we’re watching. However, it also has its disadvantages. The 3-D glasses work by controlling the amount of light that reaches the eyes. It makes the screen look darker. What’s more, people with eye problems may get headaches if they spend too much time watching 3-D movies, because their brains need to work harder to “read” the images.8. Acoording to the passage, we can see 3-D TV with the help of ________.A. the exciting gamesB. the special glassesC. the dark screenD. the images in the room9. The second paragraph mainly tells us _____.A. how we see things in 3-DB. how 3-D films are madeC. what the human brain does for our eyesD. how different images get into the brain10. The underlined word “pupils” in the passage means “_______” in Chinese.A. 学生B. 视线C. 睫毛D. 瞳孔11. Which of the following is TRUE?A. 3-D glasses help people get the same image in each eye.B. 3-D glasses make the screen look brighter.C. A 3-D film needs two film projectors to be made.D. People with eye problems can’t see 3-D films.DA company, Guizhentang, has had to face a storm of criticism. The company is in the bear bile* business. They have bear farms inwhich bile is taken out and used in traditional Chinese medicine andfor other purposes.Bile is a liquid that is produced in the liver and stored in the gallbladder. In bears (and in humans too), bile is necessary to help digestfatty foods. Traditional Chinese medicine uses bear bile to treat pain, fever and vision problems. Bile for traditional Chinese medicine used to be collected by killing bears, but it was discovered that bear bile could be got by keeping the bears alive and just “milking” them by putting a rubber tube* into the bodies of bears. Unfortunately, this is a painful process and the bears have to live a life of suffering*.Animal rights groups want this practice to stop. They say it is a cruel way to treat animals. Guiz hentang disagrees. They say the practice isn’t harmful and that they are actually helping the bears. There are fewer Chinese black bears, from which the bile is taken, because human activityis destroying the forest the bears live in. The company says bear farms are a way to protect the species. On the one hand, we use many types of animals for food, clothing, medicine and for medical research. On the other hand, we should know that causing animals great pain is wrong. There are man-made substitutes* for bear bile that work just as well as the real thing, so bear farms aren’t really necessary. If Guizhentang really wants to protect the black bear, they should perhaps think about getting out of the bear bile business.12. Guizhentang has been criticized because ________.A. it kills a lot of black bearsB. it makes traditional Chinese medicineC. it is in the bear bile businessD. it has a lot of farms to keep bears13. What can we learn about bear bile from the passage?① It is produced in the gall bladder.② It helps digest foods having a lot of fat.③It can cure a person’s eye problems.④It’s now got mainly by killing bearsA. ①②B. ②③C. ③④D. ①④14. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A. A tube in the bodies of bears can make them die.B. Animal rights groups are against getting the bile out of bears.C. Guizhentang thinks bear farms are a way to protect bears.D. Some medical research needs bear bile.15.
