A& Juliet Musical on BroadwayShe’s stronger than yesterday!Following a successful three-year run in London’s West End, the pop musical Juliet is now on Broadway with nine Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. What is & Juliet about? It kicks off nearly where Romeo & Juliet left off: right before Juliet’s death. This isn’t a retelling of Shakespeare’s tragedy, though. It’s a whole new story in which Juliet decides losing Romeo doesn’t mean she should die. Instead, she goes on a journey of self-discovery to Paris. Accompanied by her friends, including some characters from the original play, like the nurse, as well as new characters, like her friends Francois and May, she goes to parties, makes new friends, and sees what the world has to offer beyond the walls of Verona. What songs are in & Juliet? You may listen to top 40 radio, but you’ve never heard your favorite songs like this.& Juliet has one new song, but the show mostly includes existing popular music. All 30 pop songs in & Juliet were written or co-written by Max Martin, who’s behind the hits of stars like Britney Spears, Katy Perry, and The Backstreet Boys. Anyone who grew up with, or just knows all the words to, hits from the 90s through today will relive their teenage dreams at this show.More information about & JulietSince having its world premiere (首映) in 2019 in London’s West End, & Juliet made its North American debut in Toronto and also its Australian premiere in Melbourne in February 2023.Pick your tickets1. On which day are tickets still available?A. May 7.B. May 20.C. May 26.D. May 30.BJames Rainey reads trees like most people read signposts. The senior ecologist is using a small hand camera to identify a lichen (地衣) that is surrounding the base of wild pines (松树) in a deep narrow valley on the west coast of Scotland. He is looking for ecological clues of species associated with the ancient Caledonian Forest, which once covered most of the Highlands.Wild pines have been growing in Scotland continuously since the ice age, offering a globally unique ecosystem supporting rare wildlife. But now less than 2% of the original growth survives, with just 14 individual Caledonian pinewood sites now officially recognized. “To meet the demand for more wood, many wild pines in Highlands have been removed to make room for commercial forestry,”says Rainey. “This was often done in ancient woodlands and was really damaging to the remaining trees.”But restoration is still possible, especially since some old trees still survive along with the ancient woodland soil and seedbank—seeds stored in the soil, which can grow once the heavy shade of commercial conifers (针叶树) is removed. The ecological investigator uses three clues of evidence to discover where these pinewoods first stood. “First there’s the historical evidence, like old maps and texts. Then comes the landscape context: is the pine associated withplanting around a big house, or is the setting more natural? And finally I use the ecological evidence: wild pine usually grow alongside old birch trees, which indicates ecological continuity,” explains Rainey.Rainey has identified 23 pines in this area, all rooted in places least accessible. Their needles have been taken for genetic testing to confirm their family trees. “This would have been filled with trees but is now empty — these are the most critical areas in need of regeneration and we want the whole of the ancient woodlands to recover, not just the pines,” he said.4. Why are the wild pines considered to be so significant?A. They act as a signpost for the highland.B. They are an indicator of an ancient forest.C. They are an alternative to commercial forestry.D. They provide a shelter for certain species of lichen.5. What is essential for the restoration of ancient pinewoods?A. The existence of ancient seeds.B. The presence of commercial conifers.C. The awareness of the forest protection.D. The application of the advanced technology.6. How does Rainey determine the original location of the pinewoods?A. By locating big houses.B. By consulting historians.C. By referring to digital maps.D. By making the most of surroundings.7. What is the ultimate Rainey’s goal?A. To confirm the genes of the pine.B. To restore the old-growth woodlands.C. To explore the unfrequented places.D. To enrich the diversity of the wild pines.CA new data crowdsourcing platform, an initiative led by Dr. Ioanna Sitaridou at Cambridge University, who has been studying Romeyka for the last 16 years, aims to preserve the sound of Romeyka, an endangered millennia-old variety of Greek. Experts consider the language to be a linguistic (语言的) goldmine and a living bridge to the ancient world.Romeyka, which does not have a writing system and has been transmitted only in spoken form, is thought to have only a couple of thousand native speakers left in Turkey’s Trabzon region. Extensive contact with Turkish, the absence of support systems to facilitate intergenerational transmission, and migration have all taken their toll on Romeyka. A large majority of native speakers in Trabzon are over 65 years of age and fewer young people are learning the language. The newly launched Crowdsourcing Romeyka platform invites members of the public from anywhere in the world to upload audio recordings of Romeyka being spoken. “Speech crowdsourcing is a new tool which helps speakers build a database of spoken materials for their endangered languages, allows researchers to document these languages, and motivates speakers to appreciate their own linguistic heritage (遗产). At the same time, by preserving their language, it can help speakers achieve acknowledgement of their identity from people outside of their speech community,” said Dr. Sitaridou. The innovative tool is designed by a Harvard undergraduate in Computer Science, Mr Matthew Nazari, himself a heritage speaker of Romeyka. Together they hope that this new tool will pave the way for the production of language materials in a naturalistic learning environment away from the classroom, but based instead around everyday use and community.By engaging with local communities, particularly female speakers, Sitaridou has gathered the largest collection of audio and video data in existence and amounting to more than 29GB of sourced data, and has authored 21 peer-reviewed publications. A YouTube film about Sitaridou’s fieldwork has received 723,000 views to-date.8. Why is it necessary to preserve Romeyka?A. It is a variety of Greek.B. It has a unique writing system.C. It can generate commercial value.D. It can strengthen the bond with the past.9. Which can replace the underlined phrase “taken their toll on” in paragraph 2?A. Had a negative influence on.B. Taken full advantage of.C. Played a leading role in.D. Thrown new light on.10. What does paragraph 3 want to stress about the platform?A. Its prospect.B. Its originality.C. Its significance.D. Its limitation.11. Which can best describe Dr. Sitaridou’s work?A. Conventional.B. Eventful.C. Fruitful.D. Debatable.DHave you ever found yourself having intrusive (侵扰的) thoughts about something you haven’t finished? Maybe a half-done work project is keeping you up at night or the suspenseful plot of a novel you’re reading keeps circling your thoughts. There is a reason why it’s so hard to stop thinking about uncompleted and interrupted tasks, and psychologists called it the Zeigarnik effect (Z-effect).The Ziegarnik effect was first observed by a Russian psychologist named Bluma Zeigarnik. While sitting in a busy restaurant in Vienna, Ziegarnik noted that the waiters had better memories of unpaid orders. Once the bill was paid, however, the waiters had trouble remembering the exact details of the orders.Zeigarnik did a series of experiments, in which participants were asked to complete simple tasks such as putting together puzzles, or solving math problems. Half of the participants were interrupted partway through doing these tasks. After an hour-long wait, Zeigarnik asked the participants to describe what they had been working on. She discovered that the people who had been interrupted in their work were twice as likely to remember what they had been doing as the people who had been able to complete the tasks. We are living in an information explosion era, and we need mental tricks to help us remember a great deal of information. The Zeigarnik effect serves as a prime example. We hold on to information in the short term by constantly pulling it back into our awareness. By thinking of uncompleted tasks often, we’re more likely to keep remembering them until they get done. The Zeigarnik effect tells us a lot about how memory works and you can use the Zeigarnik effect to your advantage. If you are struggling to memorize something important, momentary interruptions might work to your advantage. Rather than simply repeating the information, review it a few times, and then take a break. Nevertheless, leaving too many tasks unfinished can lead to feelings of overwhelm and anx iety. Therefore, it’s crucial to use thiseffect wisely in practical applications.12. What is the typical characteristic of the Z-effect?A. Tending to memorize unfinished tasks.B. Trying to finish various tasks at a time.C. Performing terribly during a task.D. Suspending an uncompleted task.13. What is the function of paragraph 3?A. To classify a concept.B. To provide further evidence.C. To stress the experiment’s complexity.D. To add some background information.14. Which is a practical application of the Z-effect?A. Reading a whole story in one breath.B. Producing a drama with unexpected endings.C. Keeping several windows open on your computer.D. Airing ads during the suspenseful moments in a TV series.15. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. The Z-Effect: How Interruptions Enhance MemoryB. The Z-Effect: How to Boost Recall of Finished TasksC. The Power of Completing Tasks Ahead of ScheduleD.

One of the reasons for the decline in book sales is the leaps and bounds in technology. Why do you buy a book when you can conveniently buy audiobooks(有声读物) instead? Here are4of the best audiobooks you can find. The Power of NowPublished in2000,The Power of Now explains a journey—a journey that encourages you to dismiss your analytical(分析的)mind and set aside yourself as well. The author,Eckhart Tolle, guides you through these transitions with easy words and phrases. The purpose of this book is to help you pay more attention to the current moment—the“now”.The AlchemistIt talks about the journey of a boy named Santiago who travels from Spain to Egypt in search of riches.Along the way,he meets three characters,a woman,a man who thinks he’s a king and the alchemist(炼金术士).These characters help guide Santiago to his goal, but over time that goal changes. It moves away from worldly riches to something deeper and more meaningful. The Power of HabitWritten by Charles Duhigg,it talks all about the power behind habits using various cases and plots to present Duhigg’s points. In the book,Duhigg turns complex systems and methods into easily digestible stories that people and businesses can relate to.OutliersWritten by Malcolm Gladwell, this book has popularized the idea that practising10,000hours in total will make you an expert in that area.It also covers other aspects about what many of today’s great people do in their daily life and how they have become successful in their own field.1.Why did Eckhart Tolle write The Power of Now?A.To encourage people to travel.B.To tell people to focus on the present.C.To meet different people’s curiosity.D.To give advice to the businessman.2.What did Santiago pursue during his journey at first?A.Wealth.B.Fame.C.Wisdom.D.Friendship.3.Which of the books talks about the power of practice?A.The Power of Now.B.Outliers.C.The Power of Habit.D.The Alchemist.BI once knew a high school teacher who made,in my mind,a curious comment.Referring to a naughty student,he remarked, with a tone of gloomy resignation,“People don’t change.”I knew the kid well.He was what one would call a“juvenile delinquent(不良少年)”.But if schooling held no promise of making positive changes in kids, what was the point of teaching? My own son,Alyosha, growing up,was athletic, energetic, and occasionally hard to handle. But he never showed the least interest in tools,or working with his hands in any way.The result was that he couldn’t tell a screwdriver from a paintbrush.I recall one day,as I fussed under the car, calling out to him to bring me an adjustable wrench(活动扳手).He fetched a pair of pliers(钳子).“No,”I pleaded while trying to hold an oily car part in place.“Pliers.”He went back into the garage and returned with a bar.“No, no,”I corrected him.“The adjustable wrench! For loosening a nut.”To which,in his own defence,he exclaimed,“Well,I don’t know!”Years passed. And then, one day, well into his20s,he told me he had decided on a technical school: machinery technology.I nodded approvingly, but already knew that it was a challenging field, full of moving parts, tools, and dreaded maths.During his period in Coast Guard Technical School,I thought about him daily, wondering what the outcome would be.I had prepared myself for the phone call telling me that it was just too much and he was being sent to sea as a deckhand. It didn’t happen. The phone did ring, but it was Alyosha asking me to fly to Virginia to attend his graduation and pin his new rank on his collar.Prouder I couldn’t have been.As I stood before my son,Alyosha, standing at attention and staring dead ahead, glanced at me.“You want me to help you,Dad?”he said.“Always,”I answered,“but not this time.”Yeah, people do change. And,in my experience,it’s usually something to see.4.What’s the author’s attitude towards the teacher’s remark?A.He approves of news about his son.D.He thought his son would quit school.CAll across the nation,in Americans’backyards and garages and living rooms, wild animals kept as pets live side by side with their human owners. It’s believed that more exotic animals live in American homes than are cared for in American zoos. The exotic pet business has drawn criticism from animal welfare advocates and wildlife conservationists alike, who say it’s not only dangerous to bring wildlife into households but it’s cruel and criminal.Yet the issue is far from black or white. The term exotic pet has no firm definition. It can refer to any wildlife kept in human households or simply to a pet that’s more unusual than the common dog or cat.Privately owning exotic animals is currently permitted in a handful of states with no restrictions in America.Adam Roberts of Born Free USA keeps a running database of deaths and injuries caused by exotic pet ownership:In Connecticut a55-year-old woman’s face was permanently disfigured by her friend’s lifelong pet monkey;in Ohio an80-year-old man was attacked by a200-pound kangaroo;in Nebraska a34-year-old man was strangled(勒死)to death by his pet snake. And that list does not include the number of people who become sick from coming into contact with zoonotic(动物传染的)diseases. Some people see wild animals as pets as a way to connect with the natural world.Other exotic pet owners say they are motivated by a desire to preserve threatened species. They believe climate change and human population growth could wipe out a species in record time,so having a backup population is a good idea. But some groups like Born Free USA and the World Wildlife Fund say that captive breeding(圈养)of endangered species by private owners—whether for commercial, conservation,or educational reasons—serves only to continue a booming market for exotic animals. That,in turn, results in a greater risk to animals still living in their natural habitat.8.Which word can replace the phrase“far from black or white”in Paragraph1?A.Contradictory.B.Ridiculous.C.Controversial.D.Universal.9.Why does the writer list some deaths and injuries in the passage?A.To give us a clear and firm definition of exotic pets.B.To show keeping exotic animals can be very dangerous.C.To prove humans cannot be infected by animal diseases.D.To tell us it’s illegal to have exotic pet ownership in the USA.10.What’s the main idea of Paragraph3?A.The reasons for keeping exotic animals as pets.B.Worries about the endangered wild animals.C.The differences between people who keep exotic pets.D.The disadvantages of privately owning exotic animals.11.The last paragraph of the passage is intended to.A.introduce some animal protection groupsB.argue against keeping exotic animals in captivityC.warn people of the danger of animals being caughtD.prove captive breeding can encourage exotic pet businessDCars powered by batteries made from seawater and planes fueled by ammonia(氨)will become common over the next10years,Bill David,a professor of materials chemistry has predicted. Most batteries for electric cars and smartphones are powered by lithium(锂),which has to be mined, but David thinks that they will be overtaken by batteries made from sodium(钠),which can be obtained from seawater and salt. The future of air travel could also be greener thanks to biofuels.David said:“We are developing an ammonia-based plane. In principle,we can improve on an Airbus A320or a Boeing787and essentially replace jet fuel with ammonia.”David said that batteries could,at first, combine sodium and lithium,as sodium was not quite as powerful as lithium but is much more sufficient.“It’s not quite perfect in terms of performance,so we need both,”David said.“Sodium is on the way up and most electric cars have had a combination of lithium and sodium batteries in them.My estimate is that by2040I would not be surprised if there were ten times more sodium batteries than lithium ones, maybe even100times.”The first generation of mass-produced sodium batteries has been used for an electric car for the first time.Sodium will not be the final answer to eco-friendly air travel, however, which is why David’s team is looking into the use of ammonia. Some companies are looking into whether jet fuel can be replaced with hydrogen, but David sees ammonia as more sustainable. He said:“If you do the sums, then at500mph youget the same amount of power as jet fuel, but just40per cent of the range. However, even with the range hit,a787could still go from London to New York.”However,a report from the Royal Society on net-zero aviation, which David co-wrote,says that replacing jet fuel with biofuel would require half of the agricultural land in the UK.12.What is an advantage of sodium batteries?A.Their performance is easy to improve.B.Their raw material is easily accessible.C.They are widely applied to various vehicles.D.They are more powerful than other batteries.13.According to David, which is ideal for future electric cars?A.Lithium battery.B.Sodium battery.C.Hydrogen fuel.D.Ammonia fuel.14.What is Paragraph5mainly about?A.Hydrogen casts a light on jet fuel market.B.Electric car makers favour sodium batteries.C.Ammonia features sustainability and practicability.panies have mass-produced recycled batteries.15.What’s David’s attitude to replacing jet fuel with biofuel?A.Tolerant.B.Unclear.C.Cautious.D.Doubtful.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)Responsibility is an admirable character that makes life better for everyone around you.It isn’t only about His room is full of Lego bricks. Noticing his friends start throwing away their old Lego collections, he hatched a plan. “Legos are pricey,” he noted. “Many can’t afford them.”He started collecting unwanted Lego parts from friends and neighbors, spreading the word through community notices and door-to-door visits. The response was surprising. Donations of old Lego sets poured in, propelling Jeffers to formalize his efforts under the banner of Pass the Bricks. Together with a dedicated team of volunteers, Jeffers and his teammates carefully clean, sort, and repurpose collected Lego pieces into imaginative sets. These sets, each with roughly 20 to 60 pieces, are carefully made to create scenes such as blind dates or family photoshoots. Since its start in 2020, Pass the Bricks has made a significant success. With over 3,000 sets donated to date, Jeffers and his team are driven by two purposes: to reduce landfill waste and to provide Legos to children who might otherwise go without. Jeffers stresses the educational value of Lego, emphasizing its capacity to inspire creativity and learning.Pass the Bricks has since expanded its reach nationwide, with volunteers in several states distributing sets to local charities. To ensure each set is presented with care, Jeffers uses donations and personal funds from his job at a gym to purchase affordable cardboard gift boxes online. These sets, accompanied by instructions and a photo of the finished product, are distributed to various organizations and directly to children at local schools.Despite his approaching to college, Jeffers remains devoted to his commitment to Pass the Bricks. He plans to continue and expand the initiative, driven by a desire to share the joy and educational benefits of Lego with as many children as possible. “We’re grateful to share them with the kids and families we serve,” Jeffers expresses. Reflecting on his own Lego-filled childhood, he acknowledges its profound influence. “I aim to provide others with the same chance,” he emphasizes, echoing his ongoing commitment to sharing the joy of Lego with all.【小题1】What is the primary purpose of Pass the Bricks?【小题2】Which best replaces the word “propelling” in paragraph 2?【小题3】How does Jeffers ensure that each set is presented with care?【小题4】What does Jeffers hope to achieve by continuing Pass the Bricks?3、If you’re lucky enough to live near forests, you’ll know that it’s cooler under the trees during hot mid-days. Even if you live in a city with more buildings than trees, visiting a local park or garden can help you stay cool.A study from the University of Surrey in the UK found that botanical gardens can make city air cooler by up to 5 degrees Celsius. Wetlands and rain gardens aren’t far behind, cooling the air by about 4.7 and 4.5 degrees Celsius. Trees along streets also help, lowering air temperatures by 3.8 degrees Celsius, while city parks can make it 3.2 degrees Celsius cooler. The paper notes that an air temperature of 40.3℃ (104.5℉) broke records in the UK on July 19, 2022. Some 62, 862 deaths were linked to summer heat across Europe in the same year, while the 2003 heatwave in Europe led to an economic loss of €16 billion due to drought and crop failures. According to the IPCC, “green and blue urban infrastructure (基础设施) elements, including parks, engineered greening projects, wetlands, green walls, and botanical gardens, are particularly effective in reducing air temperatures in cities”.We’ve already seen a number of architecture projects around the world employ large amounts of greenery to promote local cooling, along with beneficial landscaping. However, it’s important to recognize that there isn’t one simple solution to suit every site, and much will depend on effective planning.“Our paper confirms just how many ways there are to keep cool,” added Professor Maria de Fatima Andrade at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. "But it also reveals how much work is left to do. Institutions around the world need to invest in the right research-because what’s very clear from our study is that there is no universal solution. It depends on what works for your community.”【小题1】What can we conclude from the first two paragraphs?【小题2】Why does the author mention “Europe” in paragraph 3?【小题3】What does Professor Andrade emphasize about cooling solutions?【小题4】What might be a suitable title for the passage?4、 A team of scientists from the Center for Cognition and Sociality and the Data Science Group at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) made an exciting discovery about how computers and human brains work similarly when remembering things. They found out that the way artificial intelligence (AI) models, like those in smart robots, store memories is a lot like how our brain’s memory center, called the hippocampus (海马体), does it. This part of the brain is really important for feelings and memories.Understanding how AI learns and keeps information is key to making it smarter. The scientists looked into how our brains learn and remember by focusing on a special process involving the NMDA receptor, a critical part of the hippocampus. This receptor works like a smart door in our brain that helps with learning and remembering. It opens when certain brain chemicals are present, allowing the cell to receive signals and create memories. A specific element, magnesium, acts like a guard, only letting substances in under the right conditions.Interestingly, the team found that Transformer, a type of AI model, uses a similar “guarding”method to manage its memory. They wondered if they could make the Transformer’s memory better by copying the brain’s process. By adjusting some settings in the Transformer to mimic (模拟、模仿) the brain’s memory door, they improved its ability to remember things long-term, just like adjusting magnesium levels can affect how well we remember stuff. This discovery is a big deal because it shows we can use what we know about the brain to make AI smarter. C. Justin LEE, a neuroscience (神经学) director at the institute, mentioned that this research was a big step forward for both AI and brain science. It opens up new ways to understand how the brain works and to create more advanced AI based on these insights. So, in simple terms, scientists have figured out that computers can learn and remember in ways that are surprisingly similar to us, which could help make them even smarter in the future.【小题1】What does the term “NMDA receptor” in paragraph 2 most likely refer to?【小题2】What did the team discover about Transformer?【小题3】What is the significance of the research findings according to C. Justin LEE?【小题4】What is the main idea of the passage?5、How to Develop Critical Thinking SkillsThere’s no magic method to change your thinking processes. Improvement happens with small, intentional changes in your everyday habits until a more critical approach to thinking is automatic. Here are some tips for building stronger self-awareness and learning how to improve critical thinking:Be careful【小题1】. One of the key principles of critical thinking is asking questions and analyzing the available information. You might surprise yourself at what you find when you stop to think before taking action. Before making a decision, use evidence, logic, and reasoning to support your own opinions or challenge ideas. 【小题2】.Ask open-ended questions“Yes” or “no” questions invite agreement rather than reflection. 【小题3】. Digging deeper can help you identify potential biases, uncover assumptions, and arrive at new possible solutions.Learn to be quietActive listening is the intentional practice of concentrating on a conversation partner instead of your own thoughts. 【小题4】. If you’re brainstorming with your team or having a 1:1 with a coworker, listen, ask clarifying questions, and work to understand other people’s viewpoints. This will help you find weaknesses in arguments for better solutions.Put it downRecording your thoughts with pen and paper can lead to stronger brain activity than typing them out on a keyboard. If you’re stuck and want to think more critically about a problem, writing your ideas can help you process information more deeply. 【小题5】. Ideas are more likely to remain in the background of your mind, leading to deeper thinking that informs your decision-making process.二、完形填空6、One sunny afternoon, Lily found a lost kitten hiding behind a bush. It all began with a simple game she programmed in her Los Angeles public school's Grade 2class. Today ,at18,the Grade 12 student's initial curiosity has evolved into a deep-seated desire to use technology to decode(解码)real-world problems. In 2021, she co-developed Megaphone, one of her first apps, to tackle unanswered post- class questions and poor communication about events and announcements. Her problem-solving ability kept building from there. When she took online CPR classes at the start of the pandemic, she figured it couldn't be just her who was struggling with the steps. So she created an app called CPR Buddy―a winner in the 2022 Apple Swift Challenge―which guides users through CPR using vibrations(震动) to regulate breath. After winning theaward, Angelina presented her work to Apple CEO Tim Cook, a highlight in her young career, but one she didn't lose her cool over. “There's no point putting people on a pedestal (神坛),”she says. The next year, Angelina built an app called Lilac, designed to assist nonEnglish-speaking single parents with resources for housing, job opportunities and translation support. She was inspired by her own experiences as a child of a single mother who immigrated to the US.When Angelina decided to pursue pilot training at the age of 16, she was struck by how difficult it was to find financial support, which encouraged her to create yet another app, Pilot Fast Track, which helps those longing to be pilots find scholarships for flight training.Looking to the future, besides applying to colleges with great labs, Angelina is exploring the field of aerospace cybersecurity and mechatronics―combining computer science, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.“There's not enough optimism in the world," she says. “I have also been in situations in my life where I've lost a lot of hope. But in the end, it is a mindset, and there are ways in any situation you're in to make it somewhat better."4.What is Angelina's pursuit?A. To design games for kids.B. To stimulate teen's curiosity.C. To address problems through technology.D. To find innovative approaches to digital challenges.5.What can we learn about Angelina from Paragraph 3?A. She couldn't breathe regularly.B. She was inspired by celebrities.C. She replaced CPR with an app.D. She was humble about her success.6.What was the primary goal of developing Pilot Fast Track?A. To direct pilots' career paths.B. To help to-be pilots find funds.C. To pair future pilots with airlines.D. To evaluate pilot training schools.7. What might be the best title?A. Breaking the codeB. Bearing growing painsC. Facing life as it isD. Following role modelsCSome people today might be early risers because of DNA they take after Neanderthals tens of thousands of years ago, suggests new research. When early humans migrated from Africa to Eurasia roughly 70,000 years ago, some of them mated with Neanderthals, who had already adapted to the colder, darker climates of the north. The ripple(涟漪) effects of that intermating still exist today: Modern humans of non- African ancestry(血统)have between 1 and 4 percent Neanderthal DNA. Some of that DNA relates to sleep more specifically, the internal body clock known as the circadian rhythm. For the new study, researchers compared DNA from today's humans and DNA from Neanderthal fossils(化石).In both groups, they found some of the same genetic variants involved with the circadian rhythm. And they found that modern humans who carry these variants also reported being early risers. For Neanderthals, being “morning people” might not have been the real benefit of carrying these genes. Instead, scientists suggest, Neanderthals’ DNA gave them faster, more flexible internal body clocks, which allowed them to adjust more easily to annual changes in daylight. This connection makes sense in the context of human history. When early humans moved north out of Africa, they would have experienced variable daylight hours--shorter days in the winter and longer days in the summer-for the first time. The Neanderthals' circadian rhythm genes likely helped early humans' offspring(后代)adapt to this new environment.Notably ,the findings do not prove that Neanderthal genes are responsible for the sleep habits of all early risers. Lots of different factors beyond genetics can contribute , including social and environmental influences. The study also only included DNA from a database called the U.K. Biobank-so the findings may not necessarily apply to all modern humans. Next, the research team hopes to study other genetic databases to see if the same link holds true for people of other ancestries. If the findings do apply more broadly , they may one day be useful for improving sleep in the modern world, where circadian rhythms are disturbed by night shifts and glowing smartphones.8.What does the new research focus on?A. DNA's dramatic changes.B. Genes’ influence on early risers.C. Neanderthals’ sleeping patterns.D. Ancestors’ environmental adaptability.9.What is paragraph 2 intended to show concerning the new research?A. Historical context.B. Additional proof.C. Sample analysis.D. Studying process.10. What is the real benefit of carrying Neanderthal's DNA for modern humans?A .Getting up earlier. B. Having healthier daily routines.C. Being more flexible in their work.D. Possessing a better circadian rhythm.11. What can be inferred about the findings from the last paragraph?A. They get proof from other studies.B. They are confirmed by early risers.C. They suggest potential applications.D. They reveal factors in sleeping disorders.DI had to say something after reading The Anxious Generation. It is going to sell well , because Jonathan Haidt is telling a scary story about children's development many parents are led to believe. However, the book's repeated suggestion that digital technologies are rewiring our children's brains and causing the epidemic (流行病)of mental illness is unsupported by science. Worse , the rude proposal that social media is to blame might distract (分心)us from effectively responding to the real causes of the current mental-health crisis in young people.Researchers have searched for the effects suggested by Haidt. Our efforts have produced a mix of no, small and mixed associations. Most data are correlative. When associations over time are found, they suggest not that social-media use predicts or causes depression, but that young people who already have mental-health problems use such platforms more often or in different ways from their healthy peers. We are not alone here. Several analyses and systematic reviews centralize on the same message. An analysis done in 72 countries shows no consistent or measurable associations between well-being and social media globally. Moreover, studies from some authorities finds no evidence of intense changes associated with digital-technology use.As a psychologist studying children's and adolescents’ mental health, I appreciate parents’frustration(沮丧)and desire for simple answers. As a parent of adolescents, I would also like to identify a simple source for the pain this generation is reporting. There are, however, no simple answers. The beginning and development of mental disorders are driven by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors.More young people are talking openly about their mental-health struggles than ever before. But insufficient services are available to address their needs. In the United States, there is, on average, one school psychologist for every 1,119 students. We have a generation in crisis and in desperate need of the best of what science and evidence-based solutions can offer. Unfortunately, our time is being spent telling stories that are unsupported by research and that do little to support young people who need, and deserve, more.12.What is presented in The Anxious Generation?A. Scary stories affect children's brains.B. Parents are responsible for children's health.C. Teen's mental illness results from screen time.D. The epidemic of mental illness is unavoidable.13.What does “the same message ”underlined in paragraph 3 refer to?A. Many countries do research in mental health.B. Well-being and social media are closely related.C. The young are trapped in the mental-health crisis,D. Social media don't necessarily cause mental illness.14. What is implied in the last paragraph?A. Effective actions need to be taken.B. Positive stories should be shared.C. Financial support needs to be provided.D. Broader research should be done.15.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A. To suggest ways to help those in need.B. To encourage parents to brave the crisis.C. To recommend a newly-published book.D. To give a voice to children's mental issues.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Some food spilled (溢出) out of his mouth, the rest splattered (溅) on his clothes. Arjun attempted to keep his dignity but the frustration forced him to give up and call his helper to feed him.The sight of his uncle’s shaking the spoon so violently inspired Aarrav, 17, from Bengaluru, south India, to turn to robotics. He locked himself in his room with microcontrollers, sensors, motors, and a 3D printer. What emerged was a prototype (原型) of a smart spoon that is now undergoing trials at the RV College of Physiotherapy in Bengaluru. The sensors in the battery-operated spoon detect shaking on one side and activate movement on the other, effectively cancelling out shaking to keep the spoon stable.“I’ve been fine tuning the design based on the college’s feedback-that it needs to be waterproof so that it can be washed without damaging all the electronics inside; that it must be removable so it can be cleaned and replaced by a fork, ” Aarrav says. For Aarrav it is the peak of a 10-year interest in mechanics that began when his mother bought him a Lego set. He has now represented India at more than 20 robotics competitions across the world. When the blueprint for the smart spoon won first prize in the future innovators category at last year’s World Robot Olympiad in Germany, Aarrav felt encouraged to make the prototype.More than 7 million people in India are estimated to have Parkinson’s disease, a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged and which mainlyaffects people over the age of 50. Symptoms (症状) include involuntary shaking and stiff muscles. As the disease progresses, eating can become more difficult, forcing people to rely on help from others.Aarrav’s ambition is that every family that has someone with Parkinson’s will have the smart spoon. He says his uncle Arjun’s words keep echoing (回响) in his mind: “Who would have thought such a small thing could mean the difference between dignity and indignity?”4.What can Aarrav’s invention help people with Parkinson’s do?A.Control their physical balance.B.Boost their mood and relieve stress.C.Maintain a good range of movement.D.Feed themselves more independently. 5.What does the underlined part “fine tuning” in paragraph 4 mean?A.Overturning.B.Reconsidering.C.Conducting a study of.D.Making minor changes to.6.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Parkinson’s in India?A.To show prospects of Aarrav’s invention.B.To reveal the nation’s poor health situation.C.To popularize general knowledge of the disease.D.To convince people to volunteer for social causes.7.What can be learned about Aarrav from the text?A.He enjoys being alone.B.He has an innovative mind.C.He used to be a health worker.D.He longed to be a businessman.Saving Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World is one of the more important books about climate change to have been written. Hayhoe is a gifted public speaker and Saving Us is a follow-up to her awesome TED talk in 2018, “The most important thing you can do to fight climate change: talk about it”.One of the many refreshing aspects of this book is that Hayhoe recounts both her successes and her failures to communicate, through which she has gathered evidence about what works and what does not. Much of the book’s advice is common sense, all backed up not just by Hayhoe’s experience but also with convincing research by psychologists and social scientists.Hayhoe advises against trying to engage with a small minority, the “Dismissives”, who “angrily reject the idea that human-caused climate change is a threat; they are most receptiveto misinformation and conspiracy theories (阴谋论)”. There is a warning that offering up more facts about climate change can actually increase polarisation among them. The book includes amusing examples of her encounters with the “Dismissives”, almost entirely older men-including an engineer who was unconvinced about the evidence but with whom she was able to establish mutual (相互的) respect through a shared passion for knitting (打毛线衣)—and is packed with inspiring accounts of how she has won over even the most suspicious of crowds. Her motto is “bond, connect and inspire”, which represents her approach of always looking for points of commonality. She also tells of a man who approached her after an event in London in 2019. He had been so inspired by her TED talk that he had started to speak to everybody he could in his neighborhood of Wandsworth. He showed her details of 12, 000 conversations that had taken place as a result, claiming that they had helped to convince the council to declare a climate emergency and to switch investments from fossil fuels to renewable energy. And so, while it may feel difficult to influence the outcome of the COP26, Hayhoe’s uplifting book makes a persuasive case that we can all do our bit to bring about success just by talking about the issue.8.What does the book mainly focus on?A.Sharing climate communication tips.B.Teaching presentation skills with TED talks.C.Exploring critical thinking through literature.D.Promoting people’s insight into climate change.9.Which of the following best describes the advice in the book?A.Humorous but one-sided.B.Novel but contradictory.C.Serious and hard to follow.D.Well-based and workable.10.How did Hayhoe win over the “Dismissives”?A.By changing their political identity.B.By challenging their fundamental beliefs.C.By offering more facts about climate change.D.By seeking common ground built on a shared love.11.What does the author want to say by telling the story in paragraph 5?A.World shift to clean energy is unstoppable.B.We should help people prepare for the climate crisis.C.Policymakers are less responsive to market changes.D.Conversations can influence climate decision-making.Ramirez Castañeda, a Colombian biologist, spends her time in the Amazon studying how snakes eat poisonous frogs without getting ill. Although her findings come in many shapes and sizes, she and her colleagues have struggled to get their biological discoveries out to the wider scientific community. With Spanish as her mother tongue, her research had to be translated into English to be published. That wasn’t always possible because of budget or time-and it means that some of her findings were never published.“It’s not that I’m a bad scientist,” she says. “It’s just because of the language.”Castañeda is not alone. There is plenty of research in non-English-language papers that gets lost in translation, or is never translated. A research looked through more than 400, 000 peer-reviewed papers in 16 different languages and found 1, 234 studies providing evidence on biodiversity conservation which, because they weren’t in English, may have been overlooked. These included Japanese-language findings on the effectiveness of relocating the endangered Blakiston’s fish owl, the largest owl species. Some experts argue that for the sake of the bigger picture, scientific knowledge should converge (转换) into one common language. Science is very globalised and becoming more so, so the use of a global language is enormous for that.Of course, scientists can work with an English partner, or use a translator-but this ultimately strengthens the cycle of dependency on the global north, leading to inequality in international influence. The specific meanings of words can also pose a problem in translation. For example, it is difficult to find in English one single word to describe forest snakes and frogs in the work Castafieda does with indigenous (土著的) communities in the Amazon.“So we’re losing observations for science, too, ” says Castañeda. “For me, it’s not possible to just have everything translated into English. We need multilingual (多语种的) science, and we need people that feel comfortable doing science in their own languages. It could be possible to switch to a world where, say, Chinese, English and Spanish are the three languages of science, just as English, French and German were the languages of science in the 19th century.”12.What prevented Castañeda’s discoveries from being more widely known?A.Poor management.B.Opposition from her colleagues.C.Her bad reputation.D.The language barrier.13.What’s the consequence of the dominant focus on English in scientific research?A.Inefficient wildlife conservation.B.A knowledge gap in the scientific world.C.A growing interest in non-English papers.D.Inadequate job opportunities for translators.14.What does the author want to illustrate by mentioning forest snakes and frogs?A.The urgency to protect rare species.B.The need to adopt one global language.C.The challenges in translating scientific texts.D.The biodiversity on the South American continent.15.What is presented in the last paragraph of the text?A.A potential solution.B.A theoretical model.C.A popular belief.D.A global trend.Learning how to apologize is similar to learning any new behavior. It may feel awkwardlearn how to apologize.First of all, wait until the right time and you are in the right place. Although public apology is often appropriate, discretion (谨慎) should be used. 17 Remember, you will be raising a topic that may recall a bad experience or bad feelings. Be respectful as you approach this task.Be direct and brief in your approach. Acknowledge the fact that injury has occurred and then take responsibility for what happened. Be sincere in expressing your regret and demonstrate your willingness to take ownership of the situation. 18Even if you follow these steps, be prepared for rejection. Sometimes, the person apologizing has an expectation that the apology will lead to immediate forgiveness and acceptance. 19 If you think of the offense (冒犯) as an emotional bruise (瘀伤), think of the healing process as the color changes we see as a bruise heals.20 Knowing when to keep one’s mouth shut is a virtue. Keeping quiet may be very difficult, as post-apology listening is not easy. We may hear unpleasant observations from another about our own shortcomings. We may hear the expression of anger. One of theways we let others know we are truly responsible and accountable for our mistakes is by listening to the other party pour out the feelings associated with our actions.A.Forgiveness and acceptance may take time.B.To give or receive a good apology is an art.C.But with practice, everyone can learn to do it.D.Listening to the response to our apologies is important.E.Most apologies can and should happen in a private setting.F.In other words, avoid excuses and offer to repair the damage.G.Taking responsibility doesn’t mean accepting blame for everything.二、完形填空Last Christmas, I volunteered for WNWNB, a charity which takes surplus (剩余的)24.A.broke away from B.put up with C.cut in onD.warmed up to25.A.threaten B.encourage C.allow D.command 26.A.why B.how C.where D.when 27.A.opened B.repaired C.cleaned D.guarded 28.A.costly B.unfinished C.deserted D.ready 29.A.declined B.reacted C.argued D.traded 30.A.purchases B.interviews C.deliveries D.schedules 31.A.meal B.chat C.report D.silence 32.A.proud B.free C.lonely D.content 33.A.connect with B.look after C.turn to D.rely on 34.A.conversations B.budgets C.explanations D.deals 35.A.hesitated B.started C.ignored D.struggled三、语法填空阅读下面短文,在空白处填入一个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

AGood evening everyone!I hope to pick your brain on potential advertising strategies and gaining new customers for my boyfriend’s car repair shop.He has been in business for3years and is fairly successful, but we are trying to increase the number of chargeable hours. While he was doing repair work,I took over all the administrative duties. The first thing on my to-do list was to get him on social media.I was floored that he had no social media presence, which is not surprising considering he is old school. Now,he has a business Facebook page and an Instagram account, although it may not be worth much yet.We are working on a weekly“feature”for both platforms in order to create some interest. He doesn’t want to do coupons(优惠券)or discounts or anything like that, and I understand why.His labor rate is already significantly lower than anyone else in the area, and his overall costs are lower as well. This is where I am a bit lost——how can we effectively attract more customers without a hook?My guess would be focusing on the value, but I’m not sure how well that will work out.We are considering sending postcards as well since he already cooperates with a few local shops who send their large jobs to him and such. However,I am unsure about Facebook marketing, but definitely open.1.What was scheduled first to promote business?A.Working out a weekly feature.B.Increasing chargeable hours. C.Establishing his presence online.D.Visiting his old school.2.How might they attract new clients?A.By raising labor rates.B.By offering discounts and coupons.C.By cutting overall costs.D.By highlighting the value of services. 3.What is the purpose of the text?A.To offer information.B.To seek advice.C.To show advantages.D.To find cooperation.BThere was no way to escape when they spotted a polar bear.Verena Mohaupt and a handful of colleagues were trapped on a floating sea ice while the bear gazed at them, smelling the air,a dangerous sign.“That’s when everything kicks in,”Mohaupt says,“and you focus on what’s important.”As a colleague fired into the sky as a warning shot,Mohaupt radioed their research ship a few kilometres away, whose helicopter luckily arrived quickly and Mohaupt didn’t have to use the gun that was hanging over her shoulder.Keeping a lookout for bears was a regular duty for Mohaupt, the logistics coordinator(后勤协调员)for a year-long mission known as the MOSAiC——the largest Arctic research exploration in history. The project, consisting of roughly300scientists,led by scientist MarkusRex,has collected massive measurements that will help better forecast how warming will transform the globe in the coming decades. For months, the exploration operated in constant darkness while polar bears wandered nearby, storms rocked the ship and the ice shifted and cracked. Then, when the Sun returned, the ice began to melt, creating a life-threatening risk and a nightmare for researchers who needed to keep their instruments from sinking.Tasked with the security of the mission,Mohaupt designed an extensive training course for the participants in which they learnt how to avoid the danger, like storm-rocking and ice-cracking. They jumped into a Norwegian channel in their survival suits and climbed out of the freezing waters using only their ice picks. They learnt how to escape from a crashed helicopter. And they discussed the psychological effects of being far from home.Mohaupt brought knitting equipment, yoga mats and a violin for their men tal health——although having been prepared for the isolation.Mohaupt didn’t expect a career in polar regions, but says she has always been drawn to the north.“She was there to make sure that we were protected,”says Markus Rex,“Mohaupt iscertainly the champion in the field.”4.Why does the author mention a polar bear in the beginning?A.To show the threat of bears.B.To tell an interesting story.C.To introduce Mohaupt’s job.D.To describe the polar scenery.5.What can we know from paragraph3?A.The working conditions were tough.B.Mohaupt helped to collect massive data. C.The exploration went on in total darkness.D.Mohaupt’s duty was to protect polar bears. 6.Which of the following best describes Mohaupt?A.Ambitious and brave.B.Passionate and dependent. C.Considerate and modest.D.Professional and responsible.7.What is a suitable title for the text?A.A Potential Danger in the Exploration.B.A Guardian Angel of Polar Researchers. C.A Great Scientific Exploration in History.D.A Great Female Scientist in Polar Research.CChances are you’ve heard the phrase“like a moth to a flame”——and probably seen it in action at a nighttime fire or barbecue, too. It turns out, however, this age-old saying may not be quite right.Rather than being attracted to light, moths’tendency to fly toward brightness is a behavioral response to help them determine which way is up,suggests a new study published in the journal Nature Communications. To avoid falling down to the ground, insects need to know which way is up,says study coauthor Yash Sondhi,a National Geographic Explorer.Without systems to maintain spatial(空间的)orientation, the brightness of the sky, even at night, has always been a strong indicator of “up”——until artificial lights came along. If they mess that up,they start plummeting.Sondhi and a team of researchers set up experiments to investigate how different lights influence flight behavior.First, the researchers suspended a light bulb from a rope between two trees——resembling a typical downward-pointing light——and in a separate test, they turned the light upward by mounting it on a tripod(三脚架).In both cases, insects leaned their winged backs to the bulb. But when the light was pointed up,the insects often bumped to the ground. What if the light is spread over a wide area? The researchers stretched a large white sheetacross the tree and projected a UV light on it.If the insects were truly“attracted”to the light, they should fly up toward it.Instead, the insects cruised(巡航)straight through this illuminated corridor, flying how they would during the day.The team then placed the sheet on the ground and shined the light on it,which is when something truly odd happened:All these moths flying over it turned upside down and crashed out of the sky.Directionality of light is a huge factor in the pattern we have seen, not just brightness or color.“Artificial lights may cause a mismatch between the insect’s sense of which way is up and true direction of gravity, which spells trouble for insects population.”says Sondhi.8.What can be inferred about“like a moth to a flame”in the new study?A.A moth is generally attracted by a flame.B.Artificial lights are valuable for a moth. C.Brightness indicates up for a moth.D.A moth has a sense of direction. 9.What does the underlined word“plummeting”in paragraph2mean?A.Crashing.B.Speeding.C.Freezing.D.Suspending. 10.What lights influence insects most in the experiments?A.UV lights on the tree.B.Upward-pointing lights. C.Downward-pointing lights.D.Lights of different colors.11.What is Sondhi’s attitude toward artificial lights?A.Concerned.B.Dismissive.C.Doubtful.D.Neutral.DWould you rather watch a new movie,or an old favorite?Would you rather try a dish you’ve never had at a restaurant,or stick with something you know you’ll like?Researchers studying the “mere exposure effect”have found that we often prefer the familiar over the novel.People didn’t need to experience a reward or positive outcome while around the object—simply being exposed to the object would be enough to make people like it.To test this, social psychologist Robert Zajonc had participants read words in a foreign language out loud and varied how often participants read each word(up to25repetitions).Next,after reading the words, participants were asked to guess at the meaning of each word by filling out a rating scale (indicating how positive or negative they thought the meaning of the word was).He found that participants liked words that they had said more often, while words thatparticipants hadn’t read at all were rated more negatively, and words that had been read25times were rated highest.Just the me re exposure to the word was enough to make participant s like it more. One place where the me re exposure effect occurs is in advertising. It explains why seeing the same advertisement multiple times could be more convincing than just seeing it once.Of course, there’s a caution here:the me re exposure effect doesn’t happen for things we initially dislike. Researchers have found that our liking for a variety of things(including pictures, sounds, foods, and smells)can be increased with repeated exposure, suggesting that the mere exposure effect isn’t limited to just one of our senses.Additionally, researchers have found that the me re exposure effect occurs in studies with human research participants as well as in studies with non-human animals.Another key finding from this analysis was that participants eventually started to like object s less after many repeated exposures. In other words,a smaller number of repeated exposures will make you like something more——but,if the repeated exposures continue, you could eventually get tired of it.12.What is the key factor in Robert Zajonc’s test?A.Frequency.B.Preference.C.Originality.D.Achievement. 13.Which of the following is an example of mere-exposure effect?A.We favor an advertisement at the first sight.B.A student joined in the club because of love.C.We are more convinced of what we met before.D.A student read as many English words as possible.14.What can we learn about“mere exposure effect”according to paragraph4?A.It is the result of advertising.B.It has nothing to do with animals.C.It is true of what we dislike at first.D.It can be applied to multiple senses. 15.What is the text mainly about?A.More love because of more exposures.B.The study on mere exposure effect. C.Better results from the earlier exposures.D.The application of mere exposure effect.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Cathedral(巴黎圣母院) It’s been more than four years since a fire damaged Notre Dame, the Catholic cathedral in Paris that’s historically drawn millions of visitors every year.Since then, people from around the world have united to support an effort,31by French President, that’s intended to have the building back open to the public by the end of next year.Teams working to restore the Gothic cathedral have32to rebuild much of the damaged sections using materials like oak wood(橡木)and stone that have stood the test of centuries. But the builders, architects and engineers do have the33of some21st century technologies,高中3including modern building information modeling(BIM)software that enables them to work with a(n) 34detailed3D digital model of the cathedral and surrounding site, backed by powerful cloud computing technology.“It allows you to really understand a lot of how a building fits together, how it’s constructed,”says Andrew Anagnost,CEO of design software35Autodesk.It has contributed technical consulting, software and financial assistance to the project since shortly after the fire.A digital model, which took more than a year to create, includes more than12,000objects.It was a complex process.Onsite workers captured the point-by-point3D36of the cathedral with laser(激光)and photo equipment. Then, others turned the data points from that process into detailed shapes and objects, down to individual building stones. That let experts see how the building shifted in the fire—important for37any stability issues—and plan out the process of reconstruction.“It’s like Mission:Impossible when they plan,”says Nicolas Mangon,VP of architecture, engineering and construction industry strategy at Autodesk.“Every little piece is done38,and with the3D model you can simulate(模拟)everything.”Even when the cathedral is39,the model may still serve important roles.Mangon says the company is currently in discussions about using it to manage aspects of the complex going forward, 40using sensors that could show the exact location of any future fires.III.Reading ComprehensionSection ADirections:For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases passage you have just read.(A)Most teachers assign novels for students to read not write. But many teachers nationwide are not only asking students to read novels but also giving them a month to write them.高中5Yes,you read that right:one month. However, students participating in November’s National Novel Writing Month(NaNoWriMo)do not complain about being overworked.Instead, they have been known to ask,“Can we work on our novels today?”That’s because, above all,NaNoWriMo is meant to be fun.An exercise in “seat-of-your-pants”novel writing,it has almost no rules. The Office of Letters and Light is the nonprofit behind the event. It believes this carefree approach encourages writers to take imaginative risks and truly enjoy their work.Founded in1999,the adult version of the event requires only that you commit yourself to making an attempt at novel writing and submitting a novel of50,000words,no matter how good or bad they are,by the end of November.Since2005,NaNoWriMo has entered many classrooms, including those of National Writing Project teachers, through its Young Writers Program. In addition, teachers receive a classroom kit featuring a progress chart, stickers to mark word counts, and buttons for writers who cross the finish line.About1,800classrooms and45,000kids and teens participated last year. The rules for under-18 writers are the same as those for adults. But there is one important exception:young writers can pick their own“reasonable yet challenging”word length. If a student elects to write,say,18,000words and achieves this goal in a month,he or she is a winner.Awards include a“handsome winner’s certificate”and a promotional code to receive a free bound proof copy of the finished novel. The Young Writers Program also facilitates Script Frenzy,a similar scriptwriting(剧本写作) event that happens each April and challenges participants to write a100-page script in30days.While young writers work primarily as individuals, teachers are also encouraged to write along with them.56.It can be inferred that students usually_____after participating in NaNoWriMo.A.enjoy themselvesB.overload themselvesC.look courageousD.become distracted57.By“seat-of-your-pants”in a living, most of whom are in developing countries. As the global population increases, the demand for seafood is expected to rise, too.Although ocean ecosystems are stretched to the limit by climate change, overfishing and more, studies nevertheless suggest that seafood can be expanded sustainably to meet future food demands. Success will depend on small-scale fisheries. These fisheries can be remarkably efficient.Almost everything that hand-to-mouth fisheries catch is consumed.By contrast,around20%of the fish caught by industrial ships is estimated to be wasted, mainly because of unwanted by-catch.Small fishers rarely have the right resources to expand their operations,or even to survive. If they do scale up,they might lose some of their current advantages or engage in the same harmful practices as do large commercial fisheries.Managed with care, however, small fisheries could provide win-wins for livelihoods and the environment. Most nations already have management policies for marine ecosystems that provide for small-scale fisheries. But small-scale fishers’rights to access are often poorly defined, ineffectively enforced or unfairly distributed(分配).Government subsidies(补贴)also require reform. One estimate found that large-scale fishers receive about3.5times more subsidies than small-scale fishers do. Instead, subsidies and other funds should be directed towards small-scale fishers to let them expand their access to markets, while keeping them from adopting the negative practices of large-scale operations. The total global loss and waste from fisheries is estimated at between30%and35%annually primarily due to a lack of technology, good manufacturing practices, and infrastructure such as decent roads and cold storage.Public and private investment in cold-storage facilities and processing 高中8equipment could help. One promising strategy is to pair international or national funding with direct contracts for feeding programmes linked to schools, hospitals and similar facilities.Such arrangements would provide small fisheries with large, consistent markets and storage infrastructure that boosts local consumption and does not incentivize(刺激)overfishing. Moreover, simple incentive programmes could be conducted by funders, managers and local governments trying to promote sustainable fisheries. For example, local markets could display a rating system for individual fishers or small fisheries. This could include various elements of sustainability other than environmental ones—such as providing information on the type of fishing equipment, location of the catch and freshness.Promoting the rating as a social responsibility concept would inform consumers of the need to support sustainable fisheries.Anyway, only joint problem-solving efforts can deliver seafood protein, sustainably,to a world that increasingly needs it.63.The passage mainly tells us that_____.A.small fisheries can help the world if managed with careB.the global demand for seafood is increasing dramaticallyC.small-scale fisheries need to be commercialised urgentlyD.people in developing countries are more reliable on fishing64.Small-scale fisheries are more efficient because_____.A.what they catch is hardly wastedB.their by-catch accounts for a larger shareC.they catch fish by industrial meansD.their operation is limited within a small area65.What can be inferred about small fisheries’current situation?A.They gain no support from governments.B.They are expanding to meet local demands.C.They have little access to good resources.D.They impact marine ecosystems negatively.66.To promote sustainable fisheries, which of the following is one of the author’s suggestions?A.To initiate a rating system for small fishers to evaluate the local markets.B.To provide technology for small fisheries to boost their fishing efficiency.C.To inspire a sense of social responsibility in large-scale fishers and consumers.D.To facilitate direct cooperation between small fisheries and feeding programmes.Section CDirections:Read the following passage.Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. But Shanya Gill,a middle schooler from San Jose,California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones,as stated in the press release.“The top winners have exhibited boundless curiosity,”Maya Ajmera president and CEO of Society for Science, said in the press release.“Their remarkable research not only reflects their talent but also paves the way for an exciting new future.”Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of2022,reported The Washington Post.“I had never really experienced something like that before,”she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder’s Country Inn, which started in the kitchen.“They had smoke detectors.and yet it still burned down,”she added. After she studied fire statistics,Shaya spent over a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire.Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires from the smoke in the air,Shanya’s thermal(热的)imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring. With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi,a tiny computer the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning.Creating the prototype(原型)was difficult and the hardest part was the programming,“I had two designs, and my first design completely failed. It was a really big challenge I had to go through.”she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy.Shanya wants to bring the costs down to make it even more common than hardwired smoke detectors.“Shanya saw a problem, went after it and tried to solve it,and that’s what we need toencourage with all young people,”said Ajmera. She also highlighted the significance of supporting individuals, especially girls and kids of color,in STEM fields,as research indicates that many young people drop out of these areas.4.What can we learn about Shanya from the first two paragraphs?A.She gained a lot of money in the award.B.She showed a curious nature as a schooler.C.She set a big stage for young people her age.D.She was junior to other winners in performance.5.What motivated Shanya to develop her fire detection system?A.Her desire to win the science award.B.Her experience of a destructive fire.C.Her interest in computer programming.D.Her goal to improve STEM education for girls.6.What is an advantage of Shanya’s invention?A.It consists of two parts that are easier to conduct.B.It can send out a warning against a potential fire.C.It can detect active fires from the smoke in the air.D.It functions when a fire breaks out within10minutes.7.Which of the following can best describe Shanya?A.Reliable.B.Cooperative.C.Innovative.D.Generous.Scientists have shown how plants can protect themselves against genetic(基因的)damage caused by environmental stresses. The growing tips of plant roots and shoots have an in-built mechanism(机制)that spells cell death if DNA damage is detected, avoiding passing on faulty DNA.Plants have small populations of stem cells(干细胞)at the tips of their roots and shoots, which enable them to continuously grow and produce new tissues throughout their lifetime. These stem cells serve as ancestors for plant tissues and organs. However, any genetic faults present in the stem cells will continue to exist and be passed on permanently throughout the plant’s life, which could last thousands of years.Given the critical role of stem cells and their exposure to potentially dangerous environments at the growing tips of roots and shoots, safeguards are necessary to prevent stem cell faults frombecoming fixed.Researchers Nick Fulcher and Robert Sablowski, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, aimed to uncover these protective mechanisms. Through experiments involving X-rays and chemicals, they discovered that stem cells were more sensitive to DNA damage compared to other cells. When DNA damage occurs, the cells have the capacity to detect it and cause programmed cells to die, preventing the propagation of the damaged genetic code to the rest of the plant tissues. This process has similarities to the safeguard mechanism found in animal cells, which has been broadly studied due to its relevance in preventing cancer. The identification of a similar protective system in plants is of great interest in the field of plant development. It also helps scientists develop plants that can better handle environmental stress. So knowledge of how plants deal with these stresses is of fundamental significance to agricultural science’s response to climate change.8.What is the function of the in-built mechanism in plants?A.To produce more roots and shoots.B.To increase the overall lifetime of the plant.C.To enhance plant growth and nutrient intake.D.To stop genetic faults in stem cells passing on.9.What can we know about stem cells in plants according to the text?A.They are relatively abundant in quantity.B.They are resistant to environmental stresses.C.They make quick response to DNA damage.D.They have the ability to repair damaged DNA.10.What does the underlined word“propagation”in paragraph4mean?A.Spread.B.Change.C.Existence.D.Self-repair. 11.What does the last paragraph focus on?A.The way of dealing with climate change on the earth.B.The significance of identifying the protective system in plants.C.The method of ensuring plant survival under environmental stress.D.The urgency of developing plants that can handle environmental stress.Recently,I accidentally found a set of Hanfu l only wore once from the bottom of the cupboard.I remember buying them simply to match the ancient-style hair accessories(配饰)afriend gave me.It occurred to me that1had been trapped in the“birdcage effect”.“Birdcage effect”means that when you get an item one day,you will prepare more things to match it.Weeks ago,I was in the company of friends engaged in shopping. One said that she wanted to buy a good writing pen to match the delicate notebook that her sister gave her,so that she would fall in love with taking notes on reading, and thus love reading, not just reading.I joked that she must have fallen for the“birdcage effect”.But the friend said with a smile:“Why not use the‘birdcage effect’instead?”For the first time,I heard that the“birdcage effect”can be used in reverse(逆向).However, this can’t help but remind me of middle school, and I seem to have used the“birdcage effect”. Passing by a bookstore one day,I purchased a magazine and saw the call for contributions published in the magazine,so I started writing with eager hands, and then I fell in love with writing. After shopping with my friends that time,I began to proceed to use the“birdcage effect”.I bought a small fresh tablecloth to decorate my desk, and a beautiful notebook to record my inspiration. When everything was ready,I started writing again. But how can we get rid of the“birdcage effect”in many things, and even use the“birdcage effect”in the opposite way?Various“birdcages”unavoidably appear in life, but we can distinguish them.If it is not in line with the actual situation,it is a“negative birdcage”,then we must learn to stop losses in time and maintain a heart of abandonment and separation. If it is a “positive birdcage”that motivates us to develop upward,we can clarify our goals, shop or decorate appropriately, and motivate ourselves to move towards our goals. At this time, you will find that the“birdcage effect”is actually not so terrible!12.What is paragraph2mainly about?A.The application of the“birdcage effect”in life.B.The necessity of using the“birdcage effect”in life.C.The turning point of the author’s idea on the“birdcage effect”.D.The author’s conflict with her friend over the“birdcage effect”.13.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning her middle school experience?A.To recall her delightful days at school.B.To explain the reason for her love with writing.C.To confirm the positive of the“birdcage effect”.D.To prove her knowledge of the“birdcage effect”.14.How can we make use of the“birdcage effect”positively?A.By realizing this effect has two sides.B.By promoting our personal consumption.C.By recognizing this effect is not so terrible.D.By Each passage is followed by some questio the passage and make the best choice to complete each question or unfinished statement. Then type th Passage1Every human being, no matter what he is doing, gives off body heat. The usualproblem is how to dispose of it. But the designers of the Johnstown campus of theUniversity of Pittsburgh set themselves the opposite problem -- how to collect bodyheat. They have designed a collection system which utilizes not only body heat, butthe heat given off by such objects as light bulbs and refrigerators as well. Thesystem works so well that no conventional fuel is needed to make the campus's sixbuildings comfortable. Some parts of most modern buildings--theaters and offices as well asclassrooms -- are more than amply heated by people and lights and sometimesmust be airconditioned even in winter. The technique of saving heat andredistributing it is called "heat recovery". A few modern buildings recover heat, butthe University's system is the first to recover heat from some buildings and reuse itin others.Along the way, Pitt has learned a great deal about some of its heat producers. The harder a student studies the more heat his body gives off. Male students emitmore heat than female students, and the larger a student, the more heat heproduces. It is tempting to conclude that the hottest prospect for the Johnstowncampus would be a hard-working, overweight male genius.31. Which of the following is true of the heating system of the Johnstowncampus?____[A] The heat is supplied by human bodies.[B] The heat is supplied by both human bodies and other heat-emitting objects.[C] The heat is supplied by both human bodies and conventional fuel.[D] The heat is supplied by human bodies, other heatemitting objects, and conventional fuel.32. In the last sentence, the "hottest prospect" refers to ____.[A] the person who produces most heat[B] the person who suffers most from heat[C] the person who takes in most heat[D] the person who withstands most heat35. A good title for this passage would be____.[A] Modern Building's Heat System[B] A New Heat Recovery System in Pittsburgh[C] A Novelty in Heating System[D] Recovery of Body's HeatPassage2The American expression "shoo-in" means someone or something that seems sure to win a race or competition. Before a big football game, supporters of each team are certain to argue about which side will win.Sometimes, however, one team appears so much stronger than the others that everyone agrees it will win. The stronger team is a shoo-in. There is no way that it can lose. The expression shoo-in comes from horse racing. It comes from the word "shoo." That's not the shoe we wear on our foot. It's another word, S-H-O-O. To shoo is an expression hundreds of years old that means to urge a person or animal to move in a desired direction. Many years ago, dishonest riders sometimes agreed secretly to control their horses so that one chosen horse would win the race. All but one of the riders would hold back their horses. The chosen rider would shoo his horse ahead of the others, and win the race. The other riders would secretly bet large amounts of money that the chosen horse would win.The public soon learned about such races. They began to call the winner of such a race a "shoo-in."These days, people use shoo-in to describe any athlete or competitor that seems certain to win, even without cheating. American runner Edwin Moses won more than one hundred races before he ran the hurdles race in the nineteen eighty-four Olympic games. Everyone said Moses was a shoo-in, that he could not lose. And they were right. He won the gold medal.36. One of the dishonest riders was sure to win the race because ____.[A] the other riders had agreed to fail in the race[B] he used to be best at riding[C] the public had confidence in him[D] he could control his horse easily37. The reason why American runner Edwin Moses was regarded as a "shoo-in" is ____.[A] owing to his honest character[B] due to his great effort shown in more than one hundred races[C] that he won over 100 competitions before the 1984 Olympic games[D] that the old meaning of "shoo-in" had changed38. Which of the following statements is NOT true?____[A] "Shoo-in" originated in the word "shoo".[B] The public did not know they were being cheated.[C] Some riders bet a lot of money on the chosen horse.[D] US runner Moses deserved a shoo-in.39. The main idea of this passage is that "shoo-in" ____.[A] is used to admire a person who seems to be sure to win a race[B] is a word used to describe a dishonest person[C] is used for any athlete or competitor that seems too clever to be cheated[D] is used for anyone or anything that is certain of winning a game40. This selection can best be titled ____.[A] Be Sure to Win[B] Shoo-in, a Sure Winner[C] Winner in a Competition[D] The Birth of Shoo-inPassage 3Will America produce enough competent workers to meet the nation's needs in the 21th Century? That question lies at the heart of the most recent dispute over this country.According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 21 million new workers will be needed by the year 2000, and the fastest growing occupations will be those that require the most educational preparation. A report predicts that the currentaverage skill level of 21-to-25-year-old is 40 percent lower than the skill-level that will be required of the new workers needed by that year. Yet between now and the year 2000, about 80 percent of new workers will be women and minorities, groups whose members have ever lagged in educational achievement. Businessmen, educators and politicians are all concerned. The basis of the concern is the simple fact that the natural pool from which America has historically drawn new workers -- young adults -- is becoming mainly made up of minorities. Populations overlooked or ignored -- because there were more than enough young white males to fill the nation's job demands -- are now the focus of concern about the future workforce. The report says: “As America heads toward a more demanding skill-intensive economy, a literate, educated workforce is essential to our ability to compete in the world market. Unless we act now, we will face a serious shortage of skilled workers."It should be clear, from the above, that much of this concern about the future of America's workforce may not be unreasonable. The nation will become more dependent on women and minority workers; at the same time they will become better trained and better educated. And while many worry that there may be too few workers by the year 2000, the BIS has noted that this may not reflect "an overall lack of workers," but the declining numbers in the younger age groups in the labor force. In fact, the BIS reported, "The workforce of the future will be older." Of course, this is another question to this topic.41. Most American people get married, but at the present time, fifty percent of American marriages end up in divorce. However, four out of five divorced people do not stay single. They get married a second time to new partners. Sociologists tell us that in the next century, most American peoplewill marry three or four times in one life-time. Alvin Toffler, an American sociologist, calls this new social form serial marriages. In his book Future Shock, Toffler gives many reasons for this change in American marriage. In modern society, people's lives don't stay the same for very long. American frequently change their jobs, their homes, and their circle of friends. So the person who was a good husband or wife ten years ago is sometimes not as good ten years later. After some years of marriage, a husband or wife can feel that their lives have become very different, and they don't share the same interests any more. For this reason, Toffler says, people in the twenty-first century will not plan to marry only one person for an entire lifetime. They will plan to stay married to one person for perhaps five or ten years, and then marry another. Most Americans will expect to have a " marriage career" that includes three or four marriages.46. In fact, too much emphasis on individual words both slows your speed and reduces your comprehension. You will be given the chance to prove this to yourself, but meanwhile, let us look at the implications.First, any habit which slows clown your silent reading to the speed at which you speak, or read aloud, is inefficient. If you point to each word as you read, or move your head, or form the words with your lips, you read poorly. Less obvious habits also hold back reading efficiency. One is "saying" each word silently by moving your tongue or throat or vocal cords; another is "hearing" each word as you read. These are habits which should have been outgrown long ago. The beginning reader is learning how letters can make words, how written words are pronounced, and how sentences are put together. Your reading purpose is quite different; it is to understand meaning. It has been estimated that up to 75% of the words in English sentences are not really necessary for conveying the meaning. The secret of silent reading is to seek out those key words and' phrases which carry the thought, and to pay lessattention to words which exist only for the sake of grammatical completeness. An efficient reader can grasp the meaning from a page at least twice as fast as he can read the page aloud. Unconsciously perhaps, he takes in a whole phrase or thought unit at a time. If he "says" or "hears" words to himself, they are selected ones, said for emphasis.51.
