Recently newspapers have reported that officials in a little-known mountainous area near Guiyang, Guizhou. Province wanted to turn the area into a “central business district” for Guiyang and invited a foreign design company to give it an entirely new look. The design company came up with a blueprint for unconventional, super-futuristic buildings. This triggered off different response. Some appreciated the bold innovation of the design, but others held that it failed to reflect regional characteristics or local heritage. What is your view on this?
Competition between local heritage and economic prosper icy
As the rapid development of Chinese economic, the cities around the coastline achieved a great progress during the thirty years. While some regional which located at western or south-western still struggle with the problem of economic development. In order to solve the problem, the government of Guiyang is going to turn a little-known mountainous area into a modern tourism scene. While this transition failed to reflect regional characteristics or local heritage. In my opinion, there is not a competition between local heritage and economic prosper icy, we can find a compromise solution between them.
Firstly, in order to improve the economic development in some backward regional, it is reasonable to take some innovation measures to rebuild those palaces. However, the benefits from development should not only focus on making money or GDP, but also inherit our traditional culture and heritage. So, I think, Guiyang do not need to spend a lot of unnecessary money on the foreign design company for the bold innovational design. It is plausible for the government to invite some experts who is familiar with Guiyang traditional culture to cooperate with designers to make a blueprint which is combined with innovations and traditional heritage.
Secondly, the final purpose of economic development is to improve the living quality of our regional people. Obviously, if the government makes effort to develop this regional, it is a good new for the resident. However, some buildings will inevitable occupy some farming land, what do those farmer do for living? In order to solve this problem, the best way is to develop some sectors which is adapt to local conditions. Such as tourism, it can not only inherit our traditional culture and heritage, but also develop the local economic. Furthermore, those farmers who lost their land could open some indigenous restaurants or shops.
In conclusion, nowadays our society advocate innovation and creation, and it applies to every aspects of our life. So, I could not criticize the idea of Guiyang government, however, I do not think innovation and creation mean breaking our tradition or unconventional. So I hope when we regard to the development of local economic, we can tradition and innovation together.。
