Questions 6-10
We are not alone; only one tenth of the human body is composed of human cells. “We” are composed of over ten times more nonhuman microorganisms than human cells. These organisms are not distributed Line equally, however. Our microbiota have their preferred ecosystems. For 5 example, some places they thrive best are on and in our skin, mouths, eyes, and in our digestive tracts. The discovery of the human microbiome (the aggregate of these microorganisms) had to wait for modern DNA sequencing techniques. Even current lab techniques cannot culture these microorganisms. Since its 10 discovery in the late 1990s, knowledge of the human microbiome's surprising influence on human health has been growing. Indeed, its impact has been called “overwhelming.” The large intestine alone contains the biggest bacterial ecosystem in the human body, home to about 500 different species of bacteria. Additionally, the importance of the functions of the human 15 microbiome seems to rival that of our bodily organs, prompting some to call the human microbiome a “hidden organ.” Fortunately, under normal conditions these microorganisms do us no harm. In fact, we co-exist to our mutual benefit, a state known as symbiosis. Our small friends’ functions include fermentation, preventing infection, 20 training the immune system, preventing the growth of harmful species, regulating gut development, and producing necessary vitamins and hormones. The resulting range of human benefits is extensive. Research suggests that our microbiome helps guard against auto-immune diseases such as diabetes, 25 multiple sclerosis, and muscular dystrophy; some cancers; obesity; and diseases of neuro-chemical imbalance such as depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. A study of the elderly found a link between individuals’ frailty and their degree of diversity of gut microorganisms. Our microbiome has many useful functions, and, unfortunately, many 30 common life events can disrupt our microbiota populations. These disruptors include antibiotics, diet, stress, poor hygiene, parasites, and injury. Our health will suffer if we take for granted the health of our microbiota. However, we can protect and nurture our human microbiome; after all, in a symbiotic relationship, all parties benefit.
