美国人崇尚个人自由，强调个人潜力的发挥，个人目标的实现及个人利益的追求，信奉法律至上。
在美国，人与人之间多为互利关系，表现出人情较为淡漠，但却十分重视个人利益和自由，个人自我意识较强。
二思维方式的差异思维方式是社会文化的产物，受到生产方式、历史传统、哲学思想及语言文学等方面的综合影响。
受不同文化背景制约的中美两国人具有不同的思维方式。
中国人偏向综合性思维．强调整体优先，采用从整体到部分的思维方式，如表达顺序时，要由大地方到小地方，即国家一省一市一区一街一号；表达时间是按年一月一日的顺序。
美国人则偏好分析性思维，强调部分的优先，在表达空间顺序时与中国相反，由小地方到大地方，时间的表达也由小到大。
三风俗习惯的差异在社会风俗习惯方面，中美双方也存在着巨大的文化差异。
以中美文化对待不同动物的态度为例，在大多数的中国习惯语中，“狗”这个字都是贬义的，例如“狗仗人势”、“狐朋狗党”、“狼心狗肺”等等；然而在美国文化中则完全相反，他们认为狗是人类最好的朋友，这种态度也体现在习惯语中，例如“Youarealuckydog”意思就是你真幸运。
同样地，在谈及“猫头鹰”时也是如此，英语习惯语中有这样一句话“aswiseasanowl”像猫头鹰一样聪明表明在美国文化中把其当成智慧的象征：然而，中国文化对待它的.态度却截然相反，由于猫头鹰长得十分奇怪，叫声又很难听，因而古时迷信的人称其为“恶呜”，说听见夜猫子叫不吉利，至今还留下了“夜猫子进宅，无事不来”等迷信传说。
四宗教信仰的差异宗教信仰也是中美文化差异的重要组成部分。
在佛教传人中国的这2000多个春夏秋冬里，其思想根深蒂固地影响着中国人。
更深深地植入到中国文化之中，对中国的语言词汇产生了不可低估的作用．其中相当一部分的成语都是与佛教有关的，例如“救人一命，胜造七级浮屠”，“五蕴皆空”，“半路出家”，“道高一尺，魔高一丈”等等，这些词语如果单单从字面上来译成英语的话。
会让美国人无法理解。
同样的，作为美国的主流宗教，基督教也深刻地植入到了美国文化之中，“绝大多数美国人相信的是犹太教和基督教所共有的上帝”，“1991年盖洛普民意调查显示，有一半美国人相信上帝大约在一万年前创造了人。
”因此，在美国文化中，“上帝”God这个字代替了“佛”在中国的意义，一些习语和谚语也与这个上帝有关．如“Godsendsfortunetofools”傻人有傻福，“Godblessyou”愿上帝保佑你!五非言语交际的差异中美非言语交际也有很大差异。
首先，在中国，我们不善于用肢体动作来表达人与人之间的友好与亲近，例如拥抱、亲吻。
而在美国文化里，父母和儿女之问、兄弟姐妹之间、好友之间，从小到大都没有问断过拥抱和亲吻。
其次，在美国，当人们相互交流时，互相注视着对方的眼腈是～件十分重要的事．有句话说：“Nevertrustapersonwhocan’tlookyouintheeyes”永远不要相信一个不敢看着你跟睛的人。
但是在中国却不需如此，甚至一些中国人为了表达他们的谦虚或尊敬而故意避免注视着对方的眼睛。
再次，中关两国人民对于各自的空间距离都有着不同的要求。
多数美国人在交谈时都不愿意离得太近，总要保持一定的距离，在电梯、公交车或火车上，中国人可以容忍互不相识的人拥挤在一起，而美国人却无法忍受这样的身体接触．因此在对个人空间的要求上面．中国人要比美国人小得多。
不仅如此。
文化差异也体现在学校里．中国学生通常必须站起来回答老师的问题以示尊重．而美国学生一般都坐着。
二、中美文化差异形成的原因中美之间的文化差异现象，其原因也是各自不同，纷繁复杂的。
究其根源，主要有以下几点：一历史和地理条件的影响中华民族生活在广阔的内陆土地上。
属于亚热带季风气候，春夏秋冬，四季分明。
内陆的自然环境和自然资源使得古代中国人的经济生活以农业为主。
农业经济条件下人的生活规律基本上按照“日出而作，日落而息”的方式劳动，自给自足的生活方式养成了中国人特有的万物有限．有限寓于无限的哲学思辨观念，强调了群体问的和谐。
美国人的祖先源自欧洲沿海国家和地区，航海业的发展使他们相信人的力量，崇尚发挥个性，勇于探险，富于挑战。
他们讲究速度与效率，精于计算，不满足于现状。
他们抵达北美大陆后，成为了第一批开拓者。
自然条件的恶劣、气候的多变和印地安人的骚扰使他们随时应付各种挑战，于是人和环境常处于一种相峙、对抗状态，也需要他们高度发挥主观能动性，从而培养了他们征服自然和改造世界的信念，是一种“海洋文化”的转型。
中国文化基于农业社会，这种社会是一个复杂的等级社会，强调等级与和谐；而美国不完全依赖于农业，他们对工商业的依赖较大，这些产业对个人特征的要求更高，所以与此相适应，美国人的思维取向是个人式的，与中国人人际式的取向不同。
二传统思想的影响中国文化是建立在儒家思想上的内陆文化，主张简约、和谐、中庸、对称与平衡。
孔子主张“允执其中”“过犹不及”。
朱熹称：“中者，不偏不倚也，庸者，平常也。
”“中庸之道”是孔子的基本道德准则，也成了后人的一个道德准则，是调节人际关系的一个重要原则。
鲁迅曾举过一个例子，若一个人嫌房子太暗，要开天窗，其他人是一定要反对的，但他若要把屋顶掀掉，其他人便会劝他开个天窗了，这便是所谓的“中庸之道”。
中国人所崇尚的中庸之道在于人际关系中要适当地调节与折衷，务求在不损害基本原则的前提下，使自己和别人都过得去，不至于造成群体内部的激烈对抗以致破裂，而无论是进取还是退缩，要有节度。
合乎中庸，不走极端。
但是从另一个方面来说，中国人的这种中庸与平和又在一定程度养成了一种惰性，过度沉溺于“和稀泥”，缺乏创新意识与进取精神。
由于受儒教和道教思想的影响，在思维方式上中国人以辩证思维和整体思维为主要特征，具有经验综合性特点，强调个人与社会的关系，主张建立一种以集体主义为主要特征的社会。
美国文化是建立在古希腊传统之上的海洋文化，在思维方式上以亚里士多德的逻辑思维和分析思维为特征，强调个人特性和自由。
是一种以个人主义为主的社会。
美国人不太接受中间调和，是则是，非则非，喜欢标新立异。
美国传统中则贯穿了在竞争中求生存求发展的信念，他们为了在竞争中处于不败之地，永远愿意进行创新，渴望寻求解决老问题的新办法，也愿意迁移，接受新的工作，进行冒险，而这也正是很多中国人所缺乏的，很可能是因为这一点，近代中国社会发展缓慢而美国则经历一个又一个经济飞跃。
三认知系统的影响从社会认知系统上讲，中美的哲学和认识论在社会历史背景中建构了不同的心理学理论。
中国人生活中复杂的社会关系使得他们不得不把自己的注意力用来关注外部世界，所以中国人的自我结构是依赖性的；相反，美国人生活的社会关系比较简单，所以他们更有可能把自己的注意力放在客体和自身的目标之上。
在这个社会认知系统中．社会组织对认知过程有着直接的影响，辩证思维和逻辑思维就是这种认知过程的特性。
更为重要的是，这种特性一直保持下来，对人们的心理和行为产生了广泛的影响：中国人的认知以情境为中心。
美国人则以个人为中心；中国人以被动的态度看待世界，美国人以主动的态度征服世界。
四文字的影响汉字适合形象思维，英语字母文字适合逻辑思维。
中英文字的差异与中美文化差异具有一致性。
汉字起源于象形文字，它是直接从原始图画发展而来的，是借字形来描写所指之物，以形达意。
也就是说汉字在造字之初与它们所描写的物在形上是统一的；而英文字母文字在造字时保持了与语音的统一。
这两种不同的统一体现了两种取向：一个取向于物．一个取向于语音。
因此我们得出以下两点结论：1．汉字的主要本源是象形文字，具有直观性，其意义以字形与物象的相似为理据；2．英语字母文字的字形与字的读音具有一致性。
但与它们所指的事物之间没有形似的关系，因此与汉字相比，字母文字具有很大的抽象性。
综上所述，作为一种社会现象和历史现象，文化是一门覆盖面宽广而又十分复杂的学科。
中美两国由于历史、地理、风俗习惯、认知系统以及文字的不同，使两国之间存在着较大的文化差异。
也造成了跨文化交际的困难。
但是如果我们能够更多地了解相互之间的文化，意识到两国文化的差异。
那么就可以更好地避免相互交流中的误解，预防交流中可能出现的冲突，通过拓宽各自的眼界以达到更好地促进不同文化之间相互交流的目的。
