b.Spoiling a child also happens when parents are unable to stand up to their children's unreasonable demands. Such parents fluctuate between saying no and giving in —but neither response seems satisfactory to them. If they refuse a request, they immediately feel a wave of regret for having been so strict or ungenerous. If they give in, they feel regret and resentment over having been too easy. This kind of variability not only loosens the parents' ability to set limits, it also sours the parent-child relationship to some degree, robbing parents and their children of some of the happiness and mutual respect that is present in healthy families.I. Reading[A]I don’t ever want to talk about being a woman scientist again. There was a time in my life when people asked constantly for stories about what it’s like to work in a field dominated by men. I was never very good at telling those stories because truthfully I never found them interesting. What I do find interesting is the origin of the universe, the shape of space-time and the nature of black holes. At 19, when I began studying astrophysics, it did not bother me in the least to be the only woman in the classroom. But while earning my Ph.D. at MIT and then as apost-doctor doing space research, the issue started to bother me. My every achievement—jobs, research papers, awards—was viewed through the lens of gender politics. So were my failures. Sometimes, when I was pushed into an argument on left brain versus (相对于) right brain, or nature versus nurture (培育), I would instantly fight severely on my behalf and all womankind. Then one day a few years ago, out of my mouth came a sentence that would eventually become my reply to any and all provocations: I don’t talk about that anymore. It took me 10 years to get back the confidence I had at 19 and to realize that I didn’t want to deal with gender issues. Why should curing sexism be yet another terrible burden on every female scientist? After all, I don’t study sociolo gy or political theory.Today I research and teach at Barnard, a women’s college in New York City. Recently, someone asked me how many of the45 students in my class were women. You cannot imagine my satisfaction at being able to answer, 45. I know some of my students worry how they will manage their scientific research and a desire for children. And I don’t dismiss those concerns. Still, I don’t tell them “war” stories. Instead, I have given them this: the visual of their physics professor heavily pregnant doing physics experiments. And in turn they have given me the image of 45 women driven by a love of science. And that’s a sight worth talking about.1.Why doesn’t the author want to talk about being a woman scientist again?A) She feels unhappy working in male-dominated fields.B) She is fed up with the issue of gender discrimination..C) She is not good at telling stories of the kind.D) She finds space research more important.2. From Paragraph 2, we can infer that people would attribute the author’s fail ures to:A) the very fact that she is a woman ..B) the burden she bears in a male-dominated societyC) her over-confidence as a female astrophysicistD) her involvement in gender politics3.What did the author constantly fight against while doing her Ph.D. and post-doctoral research? A) Lack of confidence in succeeding in space science.B) Unfair accusations from both inside and outside her circle.C) People’s stereotyped attitude toward female scientist s..D) Widespread misconceptions about nature and nurtured.4.Why does the author feel great satisfaction when talking about her class?A) Female students no longer have to bother about genderissues.B) Her students’ performance has brought back her confidence.C) Her female students can do just as well as male students.D) More female students are pursuing science than before..5.What does the image the author presents to her students suggest?A) Women students needn’t have the concerns of her generation.B) Women have more barriers on their way to academic success.C) Women can balance a career in science and having a family..D) Women now have fewer problems pursuing a science career.Exercises for NHCE-2 Unit3&4I.Fill in the blanks with the word or phrases you have learned.11Like most married couples we've had our , but life is like that.12They'd never such poor service before.13He's a thief and a liar; I'd with him, if I were you.14This problem over late paying has shown him .15We were shocked when we his sudden death.16 it doesn't rain we can play.17She has some terrible experiences.18You certainly when you said that he was lazy.19Don't more than you can deal with.20The plan had to be cancelled for money.Translationa.1当地政府将毫不犹豫的采取最严厉的措施对付犯罪分子。

Reading Comprehension (30 points)Section ADirections: Read the following passages carefully and do the multiple-choice questions.Text 1Albert Einstein had a great effect on science and history, greater than only a few other men have achieved. An American university president once commented that Einstein had created a new outlook, a new view of the universe. It may be some time before the average mind understands fully the identity of time and space and so on ---- but even ordinary men understand now that the universe is something larger than ever thought before.By 1914 the young Einstein had gained world fame. He accepted the offer to become a professor at the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin. He had few duties, little teaching and unlimited opportunities for study, but soon his peace and quiet were broken by the First World War.Einstein hated violence. The misery( 悲惨)of war affected him deeply, and he sat unhappily in his office doing little. He lost interest in his research. Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work.In the years following World War I honors were increasingly heaped on him. He became the head of the Kaiser Whihem Institute of Theoretical Physics. In 1921 he won the Nobel Prize, and he was honored in Germany until the rise of Nazism when he was driven from Germany because he was a Jew.26. The main idea of the first paragraph is _____A. the time when people know EinsteinB. the feeling of an American college presidentC. the change in human thought produced by EinsteinD. the difficulty of Einstein’s thought to teachers27. According to the American university president, ______.A. everyone understands Einstein’s theory todayB. Einstein achieved more than any other scientists in historyC. Albert Einstein was forced to serve in the German armyB. Albert Einstein had no other interests besides scienceC. Einstein made a lot more breakthroughs in his research after the First World War.D. His reputation was ruined because of his work during World War IText 2A few minutes ago, walking back from lunch, I started to cross the street when I heard the sound of a coin dropping. It wasn’t mu ch but, as I turned, my eyes caught the heads of several other people turning too. A woman had dropped what appeared to be a dime. The tinkling sound of a coin dropping on pavement is an attention-getter. It can be nothing more than a penny. Whatever the coin is, no one ignores the sound of it. It got me thinking about sounds again. We are surrounded by so many sounds that attract the most attention. People in New York City seldom turn to look when a fire engine, a police car or an ambulance (救护车) comes screaming along the street. When I’m in New York, I’m a New Yorker. I don’t turn either. Like the natives. I hardly hear a siren there. At home in my little town in Connecticut, it’s different. The distant wail of a police car, an emergency vehicle or a f ire siren brings me to my feet if I’m seated and brings me to the window if I’m in bed. It’s the quietest sounds that have most effect on us, not the loudest. In the middle of the night, I can hear a dripping tap a hundred yards away through three closed doors. I’ve beenhearing little creaking noises and sounds which my imagination turns into footsteps in the middle of the night for twenty-five years in our house. How come I never hear those sounds in the daytime?I’m quite clear in my mind what the good sounds are and what the bad sounds are.I’ve turned against whistling, for instance. I used to think of it as the mark of a happy worker but lately I’ve been associating the whistler with a nervous person making compulsive noises. The tapping, tapping, tapping of my typewriter as the keys hit the paper is a lovely sound to me. I often like the sound of what I write better than the looks of it.31. The sound of a coin dropping makes people ________.A. think of money C. pay attention to itB. look at each other D. stop crossing the street32. People in New York _________.A. don’t care about emergencies C. are attracted by soundsB. are used to sirens D. don’t hear loud noi ses33. How does the author relate to sounds at night?A. He imagines sounds that do not exist.B. He exaggerates quiet sounds.C. He thinks taps should be turned off.D. He believes it’s rather quiet at night.34. He dislikes whistling because _________.A. he is tired of it C. it reminds him of tense peopleB. he used to be happier D. it suggests busy daily work35. How does the writer feel about sounds in general?A. They make him feel at home.B. He thinks they should be ignored.C. He believes they are part of our lives.D. He prefers silence to loud noises.Text 3Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自语) as: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can’t change y our energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract (对抗) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam (鼓起干劲) and work better at your low point.Get off to a slow start that saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.36. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably________.A)he is a lazy personB)he refuses to follow his own energy cycleC)he is not sure when his energy is lowD)he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening37. Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage?A)Unawareness of energy cycles.B)Familiar monologues.C) A change in a family member’s energy cycle.D)Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members.38. If one wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the morning, he should________.A)change his energy cycle C) get up earlier than usualB)overcome his laziness D) go to bed earlier39. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will___________.A)help to keep your energy for the day’s workB)help you to control your temper early in the dayC)enable you to concentrate on your routine workD)keep your energy cycle under control all day40. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?A)Getting off to work with a minimum effort helps save one’s energy.B)Dr. Kleitman explains why people reach their peaks at different hours of day.C) Habits help a person adapt to his own energy cycle.D) Children have energy cycles, too.Section B. Skimming and scanningDirections:In this part, you are required to go over the 3 passages quickly and answer the questions.Passage 1. (Question 41 is based on the following passage.)41. The general idea of the passage is that______.A. doctors can produce magicB. medicine has magic powerC. modern medicine can cure all illnessesD. a healthy mind is also a cure for illnessFor more than five thousand years Chinese doctors have used needles to fight illness. This kind of medicine is called acupuncture. The doctor studies the sick person carefully. Then he puts needles into that person s body at the right places for his illness. Chinese doctors believe that they can control the body s natural forces in this way. At first, doctors in the West thought that this was just another kind of magic. Recently, however, they have found out that it is possible to cure many illnesses like this because the needles help the body to produce its own "medicines". In this way the body cures itself.Nowadays doctors can do a lot of wonderful things. They can use thousands of medicines. They can give you pills and injections. They can even give you mechanical legs or a new heart. Sometimes modern medicine works like magic. But there are still a lot of illnesses that drugs and machines cannot cure completely. Medicine is not only a science; it is an art, too. And in the art of medicine, the mind is very important. You will not have a healthy body unless you have a healthy mind.Passage 3 (Questions 43-45 are based on the following passage.)43. 新视野大学英语2(第三版)考试试题
长治学院2014 —— 2015学年第二学期期末考试补考卷考试科目: 大学英语2(A、B 级)考试对象:2014级A、B级班I. Reading Comprehension(40 Points)Section ONE: Fast ReadingDirections: In this part, you are to go over the passage quickly and choose the best answer from the four possible choices.Shopping in AmericaGoing shopping seems easy, but actually it takes a lot of learning, especially in America. In fact, many Americans who are not so well-off often shop at “sales” or at special stores that sell things at low prices, which you may find interesting. In America, the important rule of dressing is that one should change his or her clothes every day. For example, in an American college, neither professor nor students are seen in the same clothes two days in a row.So you may find it necessary to buy more clothes than you have in China. While you are shopping in the United States, you will discover that prices range considerably form time to time. The purchase of used, second-hand clothing, furniture, or other household articles may be an excellent way of saving money. Most second-hand clothes are of pretty good quality. If you are going to settle down in the United States and want some furniture, you may go to a “loan closet”, where furniture is rented at low cost, or you may also go to a “furniture exchange” place in the community.Sheets, blankets, and other bedclothes go on sale in most communities twice a year. Advertisements for “white sales”, that is, sales on bed linen, towels, etc., often appear in January, as well as in May, June or July. Once or twice every season, there will be “garage sales”, where you can get almost anything, from a yacht to a pair of shoes, at low prices. Prices at “discount stores” and “thrift shops” are also as low as you can imagine. When shopping for food, you should look for special prices for various items that are put on sale weekly. To economize, it would be a good idea for you to plan the weekly menu according to what is on sale, including in it the meats, vegetable, fruits, etc. that can be bought at special prices that week.Exchange and return policies vary from store to store. You should also keep in mind that exchange and return policies for sales items can be different from standard store policies, especially for the prices before making your purchase. Obtaining an exchange or a return without a store receipt is often difficult. So, to save yourself the headache, you’d better hold onto any paper or other proof of purchase.1. Shopping in the United States ____.A. seems easy for AmericansB. requires some learningC. is very easy for foreignersD. is only for “well-off” people2. Americans change their clothes daily, because _____.A. clothes are sold at low pricesB. people take it as a ruleC. they enjoy doing soD. everyone is very “well-off”3. A person who needs furniture can ______A. exchange their goods for furnitureB. settle in a place that has furnitureC. get some free of chargeD. rent some at low cost5. At a “white sale”, one can buy ______.A. almost anythingB. sheet, cooking utensilsC. bed linen, towels, etc.D. shoes at low prices Section TWO:Directions: Read the following passages carefully and do the multiple-choice questions.Passage one: When next year’s crop of high-school graduates arrive at Oxford University in the fall of 2009, they’ll be joined by a new face: Andrew Hamilton, the 55-year-old provost of Yale, who’ll become Oxford’s vice-chancellor—a position equivalent to university president in America.Hamilton isn’t the only educator crossing the Atlantic. Schools in France, Egypt, Singapore, etc, have also recently made top-level hires from abroad. Higher education has become a big and competitive business nowadays, and like so many business, it’s gone global. Yet the talent flow isn’t universal. High-level personnel tend to head in only one direction: outward from America. The chief reason is that American schools don’t tend to seriously consider looking abroad. For example, when the board of the University of Colorado searched for a new president, it wanted a leader familiar with the state government, a major source of the university’s budget. “We didn’t do any global consideration,” says Patricia Hays, the board’s chair. The board ultimately picked Bruce Benson, a 69-year-old Colorado businessman and political activist who is likely to do well in the main task of modern university presidents: fund-raising. Fund-raising is a distinctively American thing, since U.S. schools rely heavily on donations. The fund-raising ability is largely a product of experience and necessity. Many European universities, meanwhile, are still mostly dependent on government funding. But government support has failed to keep pace with rising student number. The decline in government support has make funding –raising an increasing necessarily ability among administrators and has hiring committees hungry for Americans. In the past few years, prominent schools around the world have joined the trend. In 2003, when Cambridge University appointed Alison Richard, another former Yale provost, as its vice-chancellor, the university publicly stressed that in her previous job she had overseen “a major strengthening of Yale’s financial position.”Of course, fund-raising isn’t the only skill outsiders offer. The globalization of education means more universities will be seeking heads with international experience of some kind of promote international programs and attract a global student body. Foreigners can offer a fresh perspective on established practices.6. What is the current trend in higher education discussed in the passage ?A. Institutions worldwide are hiring administrators from the U.S.B. A lot of political activists are being recruited as administrators.C. American universities are enrolling more international students.D. University presidents are paying more attention to fund-raising.7. What is the chief consideration of American universities when hiring top-level administrators?A. The political correctness.B. Their fame in academic circle.C. Their ability to raise funds.D. Their administrative experience.8. What do we learn about European universities from the passage?A. The tuitions they charge have been rising considerably.B. Their operation is under strict government supervision.C. They are strengthening their position by globalization.D. Most of their revenues come from the government.9. Cambridge University appointed Alison Richard as its vice-chancellor chiefly because_____?A. she could help strengthen its ties with Yale.B. she was known to be good at raising money.C. she knew how to attract students overseas.D. she had boosted Yale’s academic status.10. In what way do top-level administrators form abroad contribute to university development?A. They can enhance the university’s image.B. They will bring more international faculty.C. They can build new academic disciplines.D. They will view many things from new perspectivesPassage two:Last Tuesday I was invited to participate in a party for Tuesday’s Children, an organization that helps children with the AIDS virus. I was asked to attend because I’m on a television show. I don’t think that most of the kids recognized me as a famous person, but as a big kid who came to play with them for the day. I think I liked it better that way.At the party, they had all kinds of activities. I was drawn to one in particular because all the children were taking part in it. In that activity, anyone who wanted to participate could paint a square. Later all the painted squares were going to be sewn together to make a wall hanging. The wall hanging would be presented to a man who had devoted much of his life to this organization and would soon be retiring. They gave everyone some paints in bright, beautiful colors, and asked the kids to paint something that would make the wall hanging beautiful. As I looked around at all the squares, I saw pink hearts and bright blue clouds, beautiful orange sunrise, and green and purple flowers. The pictures were all bright, positive, and uplifting. All except for one.The boy sitting next to me was painting a heart, but it was dark, empty, and lifeless. It lacked the bright, lively colors that his fellow artists had used.At first I thought maybe he took the only paint that was left and it just happened to be dark. But when I asked him about it, he said his heart was that color because his heart felt dark and he was very sick. He said that his sickness was not ever going to get better. He looked straight into my eyes and said, “There is nothing anyone can do that will help.”I told him I was sorry that he was sick and I could certainly understand why he was so sad. I could even understand why he had made his heart a dark color. But I also told him that it isn’t true that there is nothing anyone can do to help. Other people may not be able to make him better, but we can do things like sharing our time and our love, which in my experience can really help when people are feeling sad. I told him that if he liked, I would be happy to spend some time talking with him so that he could see what I meant. But instead of talking with me, he did something different. He instantly came near to me and wrapped his arms around my neck. When he did this, I felt my own heart had burst with the love for this sweet little boy.He sat there talking with me for a long time and when he had had enough, he jumped down to finish his coloring. I asked him if he felt any better and he said that he did, but he was still sick and nothing would change that. I told him I understood. I walked away feeling sad, but I determined that I would do whatever I could to help.As the day was coming to and end and I was getting ready to head home, I felt a slight pull on my jacket. I turned around and found the little boy was standing there with a smile on his face. He said, “My heart is changing colors. It is getting brighter. I think love really does work.”On my way home I felt my own heart and realized it, too, had changed to a brighter color.11. Passage three: Roger Sperry and Robert Ornstein of the California Institute of Technology won a Nobel Prize in 1972. They discovered that the human brain has two sides, and each side has different work to do. The left side of the brain controls language and number; it analyses and reasons. The right side controls our imagination; it controls our understanding of music and our sense of rhythm. It is the right side of our brain which daydreams.Great artists and great scientists are similar: they both use the two sides of their brain. It is well-known that Albert Einstein, a great scientist, spent time enjoying art, playing the violin and sailing. Einstein said his scientific discoveries grew from his imagination rather than from analysis, reason and language. He said that written and spoken words were not important in his thinking. He got ideas by using his imagination. Following this, he used the left side of brain to use analysis, number and reason and then he used language to explain it.Usual education in schools encourages us to use the left side of our brains. Language, number, analysis and reason are given more importance in our schools than imagination and daydreaming. However, we are encouraged to hop when we have two perfectly good legs! Then why don’t we give more value to visual thinking? In fact, all of us need both sides of our brain. We need to use our imagination to think of solutions to problems and to enjoy feeling and creative experiences. And we need to be logical and to be able to analyze and organize in order to live on this world. It is true that some people find it easier to use one side of the brain rather than the other, but all of us can use both sides and all of us benefit by using all the powers we have.16. According to the passage, a great composer composes music by using ________ of his brain.A .the right side B. the left side C .both sides D. neither side17. Albert Einstein’s example is used to support the idea that ______.A. all scientific discoveries are based on imagination.B. people should do nothing but daydream.C. using two sides of the brain is important.D. scientists are good at imagining what may happen.18. It is implied in the passage that regular education________.A. should be praised because it suggests using both sides of the brain.B. finds it very important to have daydreams.C. claims that analysis and reason are of no value.D. fails to develop the right side of the brain.19. Is it true that some people find it easier to use one side of the brain rather than the other? _____.A. YesB. NoC. Not mentioned.D. Both are ok.20. The author’s attitude toward using two sides of the brain is _____.A. positiveB. negativeC. not logicalD. criticalII. Markyour answers on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1In the United States 84 colleges now accept just women. Most of them were established in the 19th century; they were designed to offer women the education they could not receive anywhere else. At that time major universities and colleges accepted only men. In the past 20 years many young women have chosen to study at colleges that accept both men and women. As a result some women's colleges decided to accept men students too. Others, however, refused to change. Now these schools are popular again. The president of TrinityCollege in Washington, D.C. said that by the end of the 1980s women began to recognize that studying at the same school with men did not mean women were having an equal chance to learn. The president of SmithCollege in Massachusetts says a women's college permits women to choose classes and activities freely. For example, she says that in a women's college a higher percentage of students studies mathematics than in a college with both men and women.Educational experts say men students in the United States usually speak in class more than women students do. In a women's college, women feel freer to say what they think. Women's schools also bring out leadership capabilities in many women. Women are represented everywhere. For example, at a women's college every governing office is held by a woman. Recent studies reportedly show that this leadership continues after college. The studies show American women who went to women's colleges are more likely to hold successful jobs later in life.16. People called this the time of the Gold Rush.A gold miner came into a city looking for a pair of pants. He wanted pants strong enough to stand up to the rough work of mining. He met a young man named Levi, who sold heavy cloth for tents and wagon tops. They asked a tailor to use heavy cloth for their pants. Then Levi went into the business of making work pants. He asked his brothers to send him some strong blue cotton cloth called denim (斜纹粗棉布). With this blue denim cloth, Levi started making the kind of pants we call blue jeans today. They were sewed up in the same way as other pants. In 1860, a miner said that the pockets weren't strong enough to hold the pieces of gold he found. The pockets kept pulling loose from the pants. The cloth was all right. It was the thread that wasn't strong enough. So Levi used rivets (铆钉) to attach the pockets onto the pants.Cowboys needed tough pants, too. They liked their pants to fit tightly. But the rivets marked the cowboys' saddles. So Levi covered the rivets with cloth. Then everybody was happy.21. To show their respect for him, the British lawmakers asked a fine artist, Graham Sutherland, to paint Winston Churchill's picture. When it was completed, it was presented to him, at a grand affair in the Westminster Hall, at the House of Commons (下议院).It was reported in the newspapers to show that Churchill accepted the gift. He described the painting as "a remarkable example of modern art", which drew loud laughter. In fact he was unhappy with the painting. Sutherland later reported that he asked whether it was to be painted in with a "happy" or "fierce" attitude."Fierce," replied Churchill. At the time, Churchill was coming to the end of his political life and was unhappy that people wanted him to end his career. Some twenty years later it was revealed that Lady Churchill hated the painting so much that she had it destroyed. "It was preying on (折磨) his mind," she was reported as saying.A leading art critic was asked what he thought about the matter. He said he could understand Lady Churchill and had pity on her. Graham Sutherland is a very honest artist, who could only paint what he saw. At the time it was painted, Churchill was an old man, worried by the thought that he would have to end his political career soon. But Lady Churchill shouldn't have had the painting destroyed. It could have been stored away until after their deaths.26. Why did the British lawmakers ask Graham Sutherland to paint a pictureof Winston Churchill?A. To show their respect for him.B. Electronic networks enable scholarly publishing to imitate the intellectual process more closely. Theunit of transaction will become the idea, not just a collection of articles. This dynamic, fluid progression of an idea-which is known as "scholarly sky-writing" is possible, Harnad says, because the speed and reach of electronic messaging "more closely match the natural biological speed of human thought". When he writes a paper, says Harnad, he is able instantly to incorporate the forces of the Net into the creative process. In one part of his computer will be E-mailed comments from colleagues, in another will be his own notes, in yet another his previous papers-and at any time, he can launch into the Net to find a new resource or paper, send off a thought to a commentator or ask a question, all as if they were in the same room. This new form of scholarship could cause problem with copyrights, however. With so many voices involved in production of a new idea, it is more difficult than ever to pin down exactly who should receive credit for it.Some scholars believe that the storage of documents as disembodied electronic signals will gradually alter the structure of knowledge. "Manuscripts" will increasingly be "live", changing from day to day as the author returns to the computer and other scholars offer their comments in the margins. It will be possible to update and message documents without increased cost, so that- in some fields, at least- the notion of a bound book could become obsolete. Even the idea of authorship could change. In the long run, the new information technology may fundamentally alter creativity itself. At a wider level, there seems to be growing acknowledgment that the main role of journals in future will be to provide research papers with a guarantee of quality and added editorial value --- in terms of making the science more readable, and placing it within a wider perspective for example --- while their traditional role as adistribution outlet will become less important.31. They come every once in a while. Very often, they come quietly and go by without being noticed. Therefore ,it is advisable that you should value and treat them with care. When an opportunity comes, it brings a promise but never realizes it on its own. If you want toachieve something or intend to fulfill one of your ambitious, you must work hard, make efforts and get prepared. Otherwise, you will take no advantage of opportunities when they come to visit you. The difference between a man who succeeds and one who does not lies only in the way each treats opportunities. The successful person always makes adequate preparations to meet opportunities as they duly arrive. The unsuccessful person, on the other hand, works little and just waits to see them pass by. In my opinion, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone in our society, but only those who are prepared adequately and qualified highly can make use of them to achieve their purpose.。

more than any other single factor, determines the distribution of list on earth. climatic boundaries establish the limits within which organisms can survive. plants, even more than animals, must be adapted to climate in order to survive. they cannot move about or take shelter but must be equipped to endure whatever weather conditions are likely to occur. in the harsh conditions of the tundra, for example, low growing mosses, lichens, and a few flowering plants all hug the ground for shelter from icy winds.animals, despite their ability to move about and find shelter, are just as much influenced by climate as plants are. creatures such as the camel and the penguin are so highly specialized that they have an extremely limited distribution. others, such as bears, are flexible enough to adapt to a broad range of climates. ocean-dwelling organisms are just as sensitive to climatic changes---in this case temperature and salinity---as land animals. reef corals can survive only in clear warm seawater. certain foraminifers are so sensitive to changes in their environment that their presence can be taken as an index of sea temperature. human beings are among the least specialized state psychiatric institute, dr. james page and professor of psychology carney landis of columbiauniversity studied the reaction of 200 normals and 210 abnormals. they tested their reactions to maddening situations of every type and variety, such as: being laughed at and ridiculed, being repeatedly disconnected on the telephone, accidentally hitting their thumb with a hammer, being worked on by a backseat driver, being told to “shut up” and mind their own business, discovering someone cheating in a friendly card game, etc. in almost every instance the anger reaction of the normal group was much more intense than that of the abnormal one.“this,” they reported, “is in accord with other p sychiatric findings. for one of the outstanding symptoms of mental unbalance is an emotional apathy.” so if you blow your top when you bang your skin against a piece of furniture, or when your sweetheart goes out with another guy—don’t worry about it. it’s just a sign that you are 3thousands of years ago man used handy rocks for his surgical operations. later he used sharp bone or horn, metal knives and, more recently, rubber and plastic. and that was where we stuck, in surgical instrument terms, for many years. in the 1960s a new tool was developed, one which was, first of all, to be of great practical use to the armed forces and industry, but which was also, in time, to revolutionize the art and science of surgery.the tool is the laser and it is being used by more and moresurgeons all over the world, for a very large number of different complaints. the word laser means: light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. as we all know, light is hot; any source of light — from the sun itself down to a humble match burning — will give warmth. but light is usually spread out over a wide area. the light in a laser beam, however, is concentrated. this means that a light with no more power than that produced by an ordinary electric light bulb becomes intensely strong as it is concentrated to a pinpoint-sized beam. experiments with these pinpoint beams have shown researchers that different energy sources produce beams that have a particular effect on certain living cells. it is nowpossible for eye surgeons to operate on the back of the human eye without harming the front of the eye, simply by passing a laser beam right through the eyeball. no knives, no stitches, no unwanted damage— a true surgical wonder.operations which once left patients exhausted and in need of long periods of recovery time now leave them feeling relaxed and comfortable. so much more difficult operations can now be tried.the rapid development of laser techniques in the past ten years has made it clear that the future is likely to be very exciting. perhaps some cancers will be treated with laser in a way that makes surgery not only safer but more effective. altogether, tomorrow may see more and more information coming to light on the diseases which can be treated medically. (words: 351)61. we find that after the development of the laser in the 1960s, ______.a. medical help became available to industrial workersb. the study of surgical techniques went through a completerevolutionc. more and more surgeons began using surgical instrumentsd. man’s whole approach to surgery changed completely62. the laser beam is so strong because ______.a. it is a highly intensified beam of lightb. its strength is increased by the sunc. it can be connected to strong light sourcesd. it is a concentration of light from different sources63. surgeons can now carry out operations which ______.a. can be performed successfully only on the human eyeb. result in long periods of recovery time for patientsc. result in very little damage to the patientsd. are made much more complicated by using the laser beam64. the rapid development of laser techniques means that______.a. in another ten years we shall be able to cure cancerb. surgery is likely to improve considerablyc. we shall be able to treat all the diseases we suffer fromd. we are now able to treat most forms of cancer65. according to the passage, which of the following is not used as a surgical, implement in the development of surgical operations?a. rocksb. rubber and plasticc. boned. scissors【篇二:新视野大学英语第二版读写教程2课后答案(1-10单元全)】> unit1section a:vocabularyiii.1. charge2. convention3. efficient4. obtain5. competent6. asessing7. fulfill8. conducting 9. consequently 10. significance iv.1. behind2. at3. in4.out5. to6. to7.in8.with9.but 10. forv.1. l2. c3.d4. n5. o6.a7. e8.g9.i10. kword buildingvi.7.confusion 8.congratulation 9.consideration 10.explanation11. acquisition 12.depressionvii.1.advisable2.disirable3.favorable4. considerable5. remarkable6.preferable7.drinkable8.acceptablesentence structureviii.1.much less can he write english articles2.much less can he manage a big company3.much less could he carry it upstairs4.much less have i spoken to him5.much less to read a lot outside of itix.1.having meals at home can cost as little as two or three dollars, whereas eating out at a restaurant is always more expensive.2.we thought she was rather proud, whereas in fact she was just very shy.3.we have never done anything for them, whereas they have done so much for us.4.natalie prefers to stay for another week, whereas her husband prefers to leave immediately.5.some praise him highly, whereas others put him down severely.translationx.1.she wouldnt take a drink, much less could she stay for dinner.2.he thought i was lying to him, whereas i was telling the truth.3.how do you account for the fact that you have been late every day this week?4.the increase in their profits is due partly to their new market strategy.5.such measures are likely to result in the improvement of work efficiency.6.we have already poured a lot of time and energy into the project, so we have to carry on.xi.1. 40%.clozexii.1.c2.b3.b4.a5.d6.b7.c8.d9.a 10.c 11.d12.c 13.c14.b15.a section b comprehension of the text ii.1.d2.a3.c4.d5.a6.c7.b8.bvocabularyiii.1.utilize2.reject3.considerable4.temporary5.acceptable6.recognition7.alleviate8.appreciate9.furthermore10.interactiv.1.interact with2.gone through3.deal with4.recovered with5.adjusting to6.familiar to7.in spite of8.were tired of9.prevented from10.came to unit2section avocabularyiii.1.promosing2.amusing3.lowered4.persisted5.rank6.swear7.unfair8.presence9.frowning 10. approximately iv.1.on2.upon3.on4.in5.by6.to7.in8.of9.on 10.outv.1.o2.k3.d4.h5.j6.e7.m8.g9.b 10.a word buildingvi.1.observe - In fact, according to some estimates, over 30% of all adults in the world drink coffee at least once a day on the average.Coffee contains a kind of drug called caffeine (咖啡因). Caffeine is a chemical that stimulates (刺激) thenerves of the body. Drinking coffee tends to make people a little bit more awake-at least for a short time―because of this stimulating effect on the nervous system (系统). A cup of coffee has, on the average, about 3% caffeine in it.One story of the discovery of the coffee plant relates to this effect of caffeine. According to the story, coffee was discovered in East Africa. The story says that coffee was first found by a goat farmer named Kaldi. This was about the year 850.Kaldi was leading his animals through the mountains and the goats were stopping repeatedly to eat the plants near the path. Suddenly, some of the goats started jumping up and down in a very strange way.Kaldi figured out that the goats were acting this way because of the plants they were eating. Kaldi himself tried eating some of the green beans (豆荚) that the goats had been eating. He, too, felt the stimulating effect of the beans.Kaldi wanted to prove what had happened, so he picked some of the beans and took them back to his home village, where he told his story. The green bean got the name "Kaffa" and later "coffee" because the beans were discovered in a place called Kaffa in Africa. Then for years, people used to eat a few of the green Kaffa beans when they were in the mountains and needed extra energy to do their work. It was later found that the coffee beans could be picked and then dried until they turned brown, and then they could be stored. If the beans were dried and stored, they could be used at any time.1.What is caffeine?A. A kind of seed.B. A kind of plant.C. A kind of drug.D. The servants (女仆) were up very late on the Saturday evening, getting everything ready for the next day, and while they were busy they saw the glow of a fire start in the sky. By 3 o'clock on the Sunday morning, the glow had become so bright that one of the servants, Jane, woke her master to see it. Pepys went to the window to watch it. It seemed fairly far away, so after a time he went back to bed. When he got up in the morning, it looked as though the fire was dying down, though he could still see it. So he set to work to tidy (整理) his room and put his things back where he wanted them after the servants had cleaned everything. While he was doing this, Jane came in to say that she had heard that the fire was a bad one: three hundred houses had been burned down in the night and the fire was still burning. Pepys went out to see for himself. He went to the Tower of London and climbed up on a high part of the building so that he could see what was happening. From there, Pepys could see that it was, indeed, a bad fire and that even the houses on London Bridge were burning. Someone told him that the fire had started in a baker's house in Pudding Lane (小巷), and then the flames (火焰) had quickly spread to the other houses in the narrow lane. Most of these colleges were established in the 19th century; they were designed to offer women the education they could not receive anywhere else. At that time major universities and colleges accepted only men. In the past 20 years many young women have chosen to study at colleges that accept both men and women. As a result some women's colleges decided to accept men students too. Others, however, refused to change. Now these schools are popular (流行的) again. The president of Trinity College (三一大学) in Washington, D.C. said that by the end of the 1980s women began to recognize that studying at the same school with men did not mean women were having an equal chance to learn. The president of Smith College in Massachusetts says a women's college permits women to choose classes and activities freely. American women who went to women's colleges are more likely to hold successful jobs later in life.11.Women's colleges were established to ________________.A. give women the same right of education that men enjoyB. make changes to the traditional educational system (系统)C. defy men's privilege (特权) in societyD. train women in particular fields12.Studying at the same school with men does not mean ________________.A. women can do the same thing as menB. that women are given the same chance as menC. women are allowed more freedom to develop themselvesD. the present educational system does not allow other choices13.According to the passage, in women's schools _________________.A. women are freer than if they study at the same school with menB. women could do anything they wantC. they teach things peculiar to womenD. men are openly challenged14.Which one of the following statements is NOT true about women's college?A. Women are more likely to be successful in their later careers.15.The title of this passage is most likely to be ______.A. Female Education in the United StatesB. Women's Schools in the United StatesC. Women Should be Given the Same Education as MenD. Education in AmericaQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the same passage or dialog.Being a man has always been dangerous. There are about 105 males born for every 100 females. However, this number changes a great deal, and by the age of maturity (成熟), the number of young men is about the same as that of young women. And among 70-year old people, there are twice as many women as men. But this great universal (普遍性) truth is changing. Now, boy babies survive almost as well as girls do. This means that for the first time there will be too many boys in those crucial (至关紧要的) years when boys are searching for a mate. What is even more troubling is that the survival of so many boys has removed a chance for natural selection (选择) to do its work. Fifty years ago, the chance of a baby surviving depended on its weight. A kilogram too light or too heavy meant almost certain death. Today it makes almost no difference. Since much of the difference in weight is due to genes (基因), a force of change has gone. There is another way to commit evolutionary (进化的) suicide: stay alive, but have fewer children. Except in some religious communities, very few women have 15 children. Nowadays the number of births, like the age of death, has become average. Most of us have roughly the same number of children. Again, differences between people and the opportunity for natural selection to take advantage of it have disappeared. For us, this means that people will no longer experience the physical changes that other living things do; our bodies are as perfect as they are ever going to be. Strangely, we have been able to make great advancements without physical change. In the past 100,000 years—even the past 100 years—our lives have been transformed but our bodies have not. We managed to make such changes because of technology and social systems.Darwin had a phrase to describe those ignorant of the process of change; they "look at living beings like a dog looks at a ship, as at something wholly beyond their comprehension." No doubt we will be shockedat the ugliness of the 20th century way of life. But however amazed future people may be at how far from perfection we were, those future people will look just like us.16.According to the author, what was the danger a man had to face in the past?A. Lack of mates.B. Strong competition.C. Lower chance of living to maturity.D. Genes.17.The sentence "There is another way to commit evolutionary suicide" perhaps means_______________________________________.A. there is another way to stop the society from making progressB. you can kill yourself by another meansC. there is another factor to prevent us from evolvingD. we have to find a way to do something18.Women except _______________ are having relatively small numbers of children.A. those who live to be very oldB. those who live in religious communitiesC. those who have the advantage of technologyD. those who live in poor countries19.The author argues that our bodies have stopped evolving because____________________________.A. life has been improved by technological advancementB. the number of female babies has been decliningC. we have reached the highest stage of evolutionD. the difference between wealth and poverty (贫穷) is disappearing20.What is this passage mainly about?A. The change in the numbers of boys and girls.B. Ways of continuing man's evolution.C. The evolution future of nature.D. Human evolution going nowhere.Questions 21 to 25 are based on the same passage or dialog.A little noticed change has been taking place in our time-world. The arrival of digital (数字的) time has been changing the way we act and think. I believe that it has put us to a higher level of anxiety, with greater expectations of efficiency. The old, round, hand-moved time still kept a certain connection to the natural flow of things, to the roundness of the earth, and to the changes of light and seasons. Old, round time was outside ourselves, far enough removed from us so we could ignore it if we so chose. It is not so with digital time, which is a beat. It beats instead of turning. It makes a sound like the sound ofthe heart and thus places itself smoothly into the body. More and more, we mistake its regular beat for our own, thus mistaking the demands of the world for our wishes. Before wrist watches, time used to live in towers in the centers of towns. At that distance, it could be seen by everybody, but only if they so wished. It took an effort, an actual visit to "time". But then something happened. Time began to live with us, and now it is beginning to live in us.I remember what it was like to be a child, absorbed in the endlessly changeable thing of time. For me there was only child time, divided meaninglessly and quite painfully by the orders of the parents into Bedtime, Wakeup Time, and School Time. But within each of those divisions (分割), Eternity still ruled. Later, of course, they managed to infect me with the anxious demands of clock time. Very soon, all that remained was the anxiety of that which was exact. The fast beats of the timepiece (时钟) cut Eternity to pieces.Occasionally, I stop long enough to recall the times of childhood, but not often enough. Like everybody else, I am helpless before the new technologies. Time is a virus, and it is growing stronger.21.Digital time has changed how we act and think by ____________________.A. allowing us to work with more efficiencyB. giving us more time to do what we likeC. causing us to be more anxiousD. having us expect more of others22.The author thinks that the old clocks ____________________.A. are somehow linked with the seasonal changesB. stay closer to people than a digital watchC. are connected with human's handsD. work better than a wrist watch23.Before watches, clocks were located __________________.A. everywhere for everyone to seeB. wherever a person wishedC. on the wristD. in the center of town24.In the author's early childhood memory, _________________.A. time was a concrete thingB. time seemed to have no endC. he fought against his parents' idea of timeD. he enjoyed the anxiety of precision (精确)25.The author's attitude towards time in the modern world is ____________.A. positiveB. unclearC. negativeD. in the middle。

(2 points each , 30 points in all )Passage 1I'm beginning to wonder whether my grandmother isn't right when she complains, as she frequently does, that children nowadays aren't as well-mannered as they used to be. Whenever she gets the opportunity, she describes in detail how she used to be told to respect her elders and betters. She was taught to speak only when she was spoken to, and when she went out on her own, she was reminded to say "please" and "thank you". Children in her day, she continues, were expected to be seen and not heard, but these days you are lucky if you ever hear parents telling their children to mind their p's and q's.If you give her the chance she then takes out of her desk the old photograph album which she keeps there, and which she never tires of displaying. Of course when you look at pictures of her parents you feel sure that, with a father as hard-looking as that, you, too, would have been "seen and not heard". Beside him sits his wife, with their children around her: Granny and her elder brothers. It always occurs to me that perhaps those long, stiff, black clothes were very heavy to a little girl, that she hadn't enough breath left to talk, let alone bad. It must have been a dull and lonely life too, for she stayed mainly at home during her childhood, while her brothers were sent away to school from an early age. That said, my childhood was much freer than Granny's. I went to school with my brother, and I played football with him and his friends. We all spoke a common languageand we got up to the same trouble. I would have died if I had had to stay indoors, wear a tight frock (女式礼服), and sew.36. How can we understand "children in her day were expected to be seen and not heard"? A. Children were not supposed to be heard by others.B. Children were not supposed to hear their parents' conversation.C. Children were not supposed to speak in the face of others.D. Children were not supposed to speak until asked to do it.37. What is the expression of "mind their p's and q's" supposed to mean? A. To mind their own business. B. To remember to say "please". C. To remember to say "thank you". D. To be well-mannered.38. Which of the following words can be used to describe Granny's feelings of her own childhood? A. Lonely. B. Dull. C. Proud. D. Happy.39. How did the author feel about her Granny's childhood? A. Disappointed. B. Unbearable. C. Respectable. D. Indifferent.40. Why did Granny often complain about modern children's behavior? A. She missed those good old days. B. She was too harsh on children. C. She didn't like kids who talk a lot. D. She was not open to new things. Passage 2Time spent in a bookshop can be most pleasant, whether you are a book-lover or merely there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. You soon focus on some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent too much time there and must hurry off to keep some forgotten appointment. This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is the main attraction of a bookshop. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can range round such places to your heart's content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the greeting, "Can I help you?" You needn't buy anything you don't want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished reading. Then, and only then, are his services necessary.Once a medical student had to read a textbook which was far too expensive for him to buy. He couldn't obtain it from the library and the only copy he could find was in a bookshop. Every afternoon, therefore, he would go to the shop and read a little of the book at a time. One day, however, he was disappointed to find the book missing from its usual place. He was about to leave, when he noticed the owner of the shop making a gesture to him with his hand. Expecting to be scolded, he went towards him. To his surprise, the owner pointed to the book which was put away in a corner. "I put it there in case anyone had a desire to buy it!" he said, and left the delighted student to continue his reading. 41. Time spent in a bookshop can be most pleasant _______________. A. only when you can find the book you want to buy B. only when you are a book-loverC. even when you enter it to avoid a sudden showerD. even when you know you are late for an appointment42. Our 100,000 students are currently studying at the Open University. We found limited development of distance learning in the case studies, with the exceptionof some postgraduate and professional courses. Even here, however, there seemed to be limits on further growth because of the high costs involved in setting up new distance learning courses, as well as uncertainties of demand (particularly in terms of the perceived financial returns on study). One of the case study universities provided video facilities and visiting staff to a rural area for a group of undergraduate students about 50 miles away. This was a new development which was working well and likely to be expanded to involve other universities. The main reason for general lack of development of distance learning, especially at the undergraduate level, may be that other universities have been unable to afford the considerable set-up costs and student support facilities. As costs of technology come downthis might change. The Open Learning Foundation is developing connections between universities to set open learning approaches within existing programs of study and thus encourage their greater use. This is seen as likely to develop further in the future. 46. The Open University provides an education for _________________. A. students who do not like attending regular universitiesB. students who failed the College Entrance ExaminationC. students who are adults and away from a universityD. students who are limited in their ability to learn47. Among other things, the further growth of distance learning at postgraduate and professional levels is limited by ____________________. The attempt of one case study university to provide equipment and staff to a rural group of students _________. A. would be expanded B. did not work well C. might help learning D. could cost a lot49. The cost of setting up a distance learning program might change ______________. It makes a sound like the sound of the heart and thus places itself smoothly into the body. Forme there was only child time, divided meaninglessly and quite painfully by the orders of the parents into Bedtime, Wakeup Time, and School Time. But within each of those divisions (分割), Eternity still ruled. Later, of course, they managed to infect me with the anxious demands of clock time. Very soon, all that remained was the anxiety of that which was exact. And, these workers consider only 58 percent of that time useful. It doesn't have to be this way. Here are a few guidelines for you to use meetings effectively, not eat up your productivity.1) Know what you want. These ways would probably be more efficient with fellow workers you know well.3) Pick the right times. If possible, avoid planning meetings during your most productive hours. If everyone runs to the break room for coffee at 10:30 am, that would be an excellent time to have informal staff meetings.4) Be prepared. Read the plan for what needs to be done. Study the numbers on the projectyou're putting forward. If there are papers to be discussed, hand them out the day before to those who will attend the meeting.5) Keep track of the time for them. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That’s what “Keeping up with the Joneses” is about. The expression was first used in 1913 by a young American by the name of Arthur Momand. Momand looked around him andnoticed that many people do things to keep up with their neighbors; they try to look as rich and as successful as their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series of short stories. He called it “Keeping Up with the Joneses”, because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping Up with the Joneses”cam e to mean keeping up with the people around you. Momand’s series appeared in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.People never seem to get tired of keeping up with the Joneses. That is one reason why they read the “right” books, go to the “right” universities and eat in the “right” restaurants.Every city has an area where people want to live because others will think better of them if they do. And there are “Joneses” in every city of the world. But one must get tired of trying to keep up with the Joneses, because no matter what one does, Mr. Jones always seems to be ahead.16. Why, according to the passage, do many people try to keep up withthe JonesesA. Because they want to be as rich as their neighbors.B. Because they feel proud to be taken for the Joneses.C. The right side controls our imagination; it controls our appreciation of music and our sense of rhythm. It is the right side of our brain which daydreams.Great artists and great scientists are similar. They both use the two sides of their brains. It is well-known that Albert Einstein (1879–1955), as a great scientist, also enjoyed art, playing theviolin and sailing. Einstein said his scientific discoveries grew from his imagination rather than from analysis, reason and language. He said that written and spoken words were not important in his thinking. The story goes that Einstein was daydreaming one summer’s day while sitting on a hill. He imagined he was riding on sunbeams to the far distance of the universe. Then he found that he had returned to the sun. So he realized that the universe must curve. He got this idea by using his imagination. He then used the left side of brain to apply analysis, number and reason. And finally he used language to explain it.Traditional, established education in schools encourages us to use the left side of our brains. Language, number, analysis and reason are given more importance in our schools than imagination and daydreaming. However, we are encouraged to hop when we have two perfectly good legs! Then why don’t we give more value to visual thinkingIn fact, we all need both sides of our brains. We need to use our imaginations to think of solutions to problems and to enjoy emotional and artistic experiences. And we need to be logical and to be able to analyze and organize in order to survive day by day.21. According to the passage, the left side of the brain ________.A) controls language and numberB) controls our imaginationC) daydreamsD) controls our sense of rhythm22. What does the author want to show by using the example of EinsteinA) Great scientists are also great artists.B) The left side of Einstein’s brain is very powerful.C) Einstein is a genius whose two sides of the brain are strong.D) The two sides of the brain are equally important.23. What do we learn about Einstein from the passageA) He could play the violin well.B) He said his scientific discoveries are acquired by analysisrather than by daydreaming.C) He was the first person to discover the track of the sun.D) He was disgusted at language.24. What does the author mean by saying “we are encouraged to hopwhen we have two perfectly good legs” (Para. 4)A)We needn’t hop because we are hea lthy.B)Only those who have something wrong in their legs can beencouraged to hop.C)It’s foolish of us to hop when we have two perfectly good legs.D)We should use both sides of the brain.25. The author believes that the right side of our brain is asimportant as the left side because ________.A) it controls our appreciation of music and sense of rhythmB) it enables us to make scientific discoveriesC) it is more important to analyze and organize in order to surviveD) the imaginations may provide solutions to problems and enableus to enjoy emotional and artistic experiencesPassage 3Do parents owe their children anything Yes, they owe them a great deal. One of their chief duties is to give their children a sense of personal worth, for self-esteem (自尊心) is the basis of a good mental health. A youngster, who is often made to feel stupid, often compared to brighter brothers, sisters, or cousins, will not feel confident and become so afraid of failing, that he (or she) won’t try at all. Of course, they sh ould be corrected when they do wrong; this is the way children learn. But the criticisms should be balanced with praises.Parents owe their children firm guidance and consistent discipline. It is frightening for a youngster to feel that he is in charge of himself; it’s like being in a car without brakes (刹车). The parent who says “No”when other parents say “Yes” sends a double message. He is also saying: “I love you, and I am ready torisk your anger, be cause I don’t t want you to get into trouble”.Parents owe their children a comfortable feeling about their body, and enough information about sex to balance the wrong information that they will surely receive from their friends.Parents owe their children privacy and respect for their personal things. This means not borrowing things without being permitted, not reading diaries and mail, not looking through pockets. If a mother feels t hat she must read her daughter’s diary to know what is going on, the communication between them must be pretty bad.Parents own their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others; it means respecting elders, teachers, and the law. The best way to teach such values is by example. A child who is lied to will lie. A child who sees hisparents steal tools from the factory or towels from a hotel will think that it is all right to steal. A youngster who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have a difficult time laughing and loving. No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something. And if you give him his due, he’ll have something of value to pass along to your grandchildren.26. According to the passage, parents owe their children the followingthings except .A. carsB. privacyC. respect of selfD. information about their body27. The writer thinks that teenagers are frightened when they are incharge of themselves because ________________________________.A. they don’t know how to stop a car without brakesB. there is no one to guide and discipline themC. they are afraid of being left aloneD. there is no one to ask for help when in trouble28. Children learn much by seeing what their parents do.C. Children shouldn’t be corrected because it destroys theirself-esteem.D. It is better to compare a youngster to his brighter brothersbecause it makes him try harder.Passage 4In the United States, it is important to be on time, or punctual, for an appointment, a class, a meeting, etc. However, this may not be true in all countries. An American professor discovered this difference while teaching a class in a Brazilian university. The two-hour class was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and end at 12. On the first day, when the professor arrived on time, no one was in the classroom. Many students came after 10 a.m. Several arrived after 10:30 a.m. Two students came after 11 a.m. Although all the students greeted the professor as they arrived, few apologized for their lateness. Were these students being rude He decided to study the students’ behavior. The professor talked to American and Brazilian students about lateness in both an informal and a formal situation: at a lunch with a friend and in university calls, respectively. He gave them an example and asked them how they would react. If theyhad a lunch appointment with a friend, the average American student showed clearly lateness as 19 minutes after the agreed time. On the other hand, the average Brazilian student would be 33 minutes late.In an American university, students are expected to arrive at the appointed hour. In contrast, in Brazil, neither the teacher nor the students always arrive at the appointed hour. Classes not only begin at the scheduled time in the United States, but also end at thescheduled time. In the Brazilian class, only a few students left the class at 12:00; many remained past 12:30 to discuss the class and ask more questions. Arriving late may not be very important in Brazil, neither is staying late.31. Reading Comprehension (40%)Directions: Read the following passage(s); carefully and do the multiple-choice questions. Text 1Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel? Every advance in communications technology is a step back from the closeness of human interaction. With e-mail and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mom has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine. As almost every imaginable contact between human beings becomes automatic by machine, the alienation quotient goes up. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. A great athlete practices until he can play quickly accurately without thinking. Tennis players call that "being in the zone." Educators call it "automatically."A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and decoding the words. With practice, he stumbles less and less, reading by the phrase. With automaticity, he doesn't have to think about decoding the words, so he can concentrate on the meaning of the text.It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found autom atic readers in the first grade who were reading almost three times as fast as the other children and scoring twice as high on comprehension tests. At fifth grade, the automatic readers were reading twice as fast as the others; and still outscoring them on accuracy, comprehension and vocabulary."It's not I. Q. but the amount of time a child spends reading that is the key to autom aticity, " according to Rossman. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will in all likelihood reach automaticity. At home, where the average child spends 25 hours a week watching television, it can happen by turning off the set just one night in favor of reading. You can test your child by giving him a paragraph or two to read aloud - som ething unfamiliar but appropriate to his age. If he reads aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, he probably is an automatic reader. If he reads haltingly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, he needs more practice.35. The first paragraph tells us ________.A) what automaticity isB) how accuracy is acquiredC) how a child learns to walkD) how an athlete is trained36. An automatic reader _______.A) sounds out the lettersB) concentrates on meaningC) has a high I.Q.D) pays much attention to the structures of sentences37. A bright child ________.A) also needs practice to be an automatic readerB) always achieves great success in comprehension testsC) becomes an automatic reader after learning how to readD) is a born automatic reader40. When she asked the explanation of this, I informed her that it was my school of dance. She was amused, and placing herself at the piano, she began to play for me. This school continued and became very popular. Later on, little girls of the neighbourhood came and their parents paid me a small sum to teach them. This was the beginning of what afterwards proved a very lucrative occupation. My mother took me to a famous ballet teacher, but his lessons did not please me. When the teacher told me to stand on my toes I asked him why, and when he replied “ Becauseit is beautiful, ” I said thwaat sit ugly and against nature and after the third lesson I left his class, never to return. This stiff and commonplace gymnastics which he called dancing only disturbed my dream. I dreamed of a different dance. I did not know just what it would be, but I was feeling out towards an invisible world into which I guessed I might enter if I found the key.My art was already in me when I was a little girl, and it was owing to the heroic and adventurous spirit of my mother that it was not stifled (窒息) . I believe that whatever the child is going to do in life should be begun when it is very young.I wonder how many parents realize that by the so-called education they are giving their children, they are only driving them into the commonplace, and depriving them of any chance of doing anything beautiful or original.21.
