Facingthisaudienceonthestage,Ihavetheexcitingf eelingofparticipatinginthemarchofhistory,forwh atwearefacingtodayismorethanamerecompetitionor contest.ItisanassemblyofsomeofChina'smosttalen tedandmotivatedpeople,representativesofayounge rgenerationthatarepreparingthemselvesforthecom ingofanewcentury.
I'mgratefulthatI'vebeengiventhisopportunity,at suchahistoricmoment,tostandhereasaspokesmanofm ygenerationandtotakeaseriouslookbackatthepast1 5years,acrucialperiodforeveryoneofusandforthis nationaswell.
Thoughitisonlywithinmypowertotellaboutmyperson alexperience,andonlyatinyfragmentofitatthat,it stillrepresents,Ibelieve,therootofaspiritwhich hasbeenessentialtomeandtoallthepeoplebredbythe past15years.
Inmyelementaryyears,therewasalittlegirlinthecl asswhoworkedveryhardbutsomehowcouldneverdosati sfactorilyinherlessons.
Theteacheraskedmetohelpher,anditwasobviousthat sheexpectedalotfromme.butasayoungboy,restless, thoughtless,Ialwaystriedtoevadehersoastogetmor etimetoenjoymyself.
Onedaybeforethefinalexam,shecameuptomeandsaid, "Couldyoupleaseexplainthistome?Iwantverymuchto dobetterthistime."Istartedexplaining,andfinish edinahurry.Pretendingnottonoticeherstillconfus edeyes,Iranoffquickly.Natsurprisingly,sheagain didverybadlyintheexam.Andtwomonthslater,attheb
eginningofthenewsemester,wordcameofherdeathofb loodcancer.NooneeverknewaboutthelittletaskIfai ledtofulfill,butIcouldn'tforgivemyself.Isimply couldn'tforgethereyes,whichseemtobeasking,"Why didn'tyoudoalittlemoretohelpme,whenitwassoeasy foryou?Whydidn'tyouunderstandalittlebetterthet rustplacedinyou,sothatIwouldnothavetoleavethis worldinsuchpainandregret?"
Iwasabouteightornineyearsoldatthattime,butinaw ayitwastheverystartingpointofmylife,forIbegant ounderstandtheword"responsibility"andtolearnto alwaysdomydutiesfaithfullyanddevotedly,forthei mplicationsofthatsacredwordhasdawnedonme:themu tualneedandtrustofpeople,theco-operationandint er-reliancewhicharetheveryfoundationofhumansoc iety.
Laterinmylife,Icontinuedtoexperiencemanyfailur es.ButneveragaindidIfeelthatregretwhichstruckm eatthedeathofthegirl,foritmakesmyheartsatisfie dtothinkthatIhavealwaysdoneeverythinginmypower
tofulfillmyresponsibilitiesasbestIcan.
AsIgrewup,changedandimprovedbythisincidentandm anyothersimilarones,Ibegantoperceivethechanges takingplacearoundmeandtofindthatsociety,inaway ,wasinitsformativeyearslikemyself.Newbuildings ,newcommoditiesandnewfashionsappeareveryday.
Newideas,newinformation,newtechnologies.People cantalkwitheachotherfromanycorneroftheearthina matterofseconds.Societyisbecomingmorecompetiti ve.
Wordslikeindividualityandcreativityaregettingm oreemphasisandmorepeoplearerewardedfortheirhar dworkandefforts.Suchistheerainwhichthisgenerat ion,growsandmatures.
Suchistheerainwhichthisgenerationwilltakeovert henationfromourfathersandlearntorunit.Yetinthe meantime,manyproblemsstillexist.
Welearnthatcrimestakeplaceinbroaddaylightwithc rowdsofpeoplelookingonandnotassisting.Wehearth attherearestillabout1millionchildreninthiscoun trywhocan'tevenaffordtogotoelementaryschoolswh ileenormoussumsofmoneyarebeingsquanderedawayon dinnerpartiesandluxurycars.
Webuyshoddymedicines,ormerelyworthlessjunkinth enameofmedicines,thataggravate,ratherthanallev iateourdiseasessincemoney,manypeoplebelieve,is themostimportantthingintheworldthatmustbemade, evenattheexpenseofmoralityandresponsibility.
Suchanera,therefore,determinesthatweareagenera tionwithakeenersenseofcompetitionandefficiency andagreaterreadinesstothinkcriticallyandactcre atively.
Suchanera,furthermore,demands,thatweareagenera tionwithaclearperceptionofourhistoricalrespons ibilityandanaggressivewilltotakeactionandsolve theproblems.Historyhaslongbeenpreparingthesequ
alitiesinthisgenerationanditisnowcallingusforw ardtogivetestimonytoourpatriotismandheroismtow ardsthisnationandallhumanity.
Standingherenow,Ithinkofthepast15yearsofmylife asanordinarystudent.ProbablyI'llbeanordinaryma nfortherestofmylife.Butthisdoesn'tdiscourageme any,forIknowthatwithmysenseofresponsibilityand devotedeffortstoalwaysstrive,forthebest,it'sgo ingtobeameaningfulandworthwhilelifethatIwillbe living.
Standingherenow,Ithinkofthepast15yearsofthisna tion,whichhasachievedgreatnessthatinspiredmill ionsofpeopleofmyage,mostofwhomwillnotattainfam eorprestigeandonlyafewofwhomwillberememberedby posterity.Butthatdoesn'tdiscourageusany,becaus eweknowthattheworldwatches,theworldlistens,the worldiswaitingtoseewherethisnationwillbeheadin ginatimeofrichopportunitiesandfiercecompetitio n.
Ican'teverforgetthatlittlegirlinmyclasswhocoul dn'thadthesameopportunitiesasanyofusheretoenjo yawonderfullifetodayandahopefulworldtomorrow.
Itisthesacredresponsibilityofthisgenerationtof aceuptothechallengesofthenewcenturyandtodevote oursweatandblood,ourwisdomandpassion,tothehist oriccauseofmakingthisnationagreaterandhappierl andforeveryoneofus.
Wearenotgoingtoevadethatresponsibility.Wearego ingtoletpeopledown.Andpeople,farandnear,willhe arofus.Frostwillbebroughttotheirbackbonesandte arstotheireyeswhenourstoriesaretoldandretold,S oletusgoforth,myfellowmembersofthisluckilychos engeneration,andmeetthenewcenturyinvictoryandg lory.。
