Museum of Architecture, see Europe at Gulangyu IslandOther than its title of the "PianoIsland", Gulangyu is also known as China's Museum of Architecture. Villas and mansions on the island are ornate and add much charm to the satellite island. For people living in the hustle and bustle of today's metropolis, stroll along the shady serpentine lanes outside the high-walled and imposing red-roofed mansions and villas, you'll seek serenity and see why Gulangyu is charming and internationally renowned.1). Eight Diagrams House (八卦楼)The red-roofed and White House-like villa, now used as XiamenMuseum, is one of the landmark buildings in Xiamen. Integrating traditional Doric (陶立克式) and Ionic (爱奥尼克式) architectural styles, the house has become an architectural representative on the island. It was built in 1907 (the 33rd year of Emperor Kuang Hsu's reign in Qing Dynasty) and designed by American Dutch Dr. John Abraham Otte (郁约翰), who integrated the Pakistani, Chinese, Greek and Italian architectural styles. The famous house is said to be often haunted by a "ghost" with long hair at the backyard lawn.2). Golden Melon Villa (jin gua lou金瓜楼)The villa, built in 1922, got the name after its two golden melon liked attics. It was bought by the Philippine Chinese Mr. Huang Cimin (黄赐敏) in 1924. The Western style villa is decorated with Chinese elements, flower, bird and plant embossment is widely used on its beam columns. The in-house is decorated with a combination of Western and Chinese styles, with Western style fireplace and Chinese style wing-room and living room.Add: No.99, Quanzhou Road (泉州路)3). Huang Family Complex (huang jia yuan 黄家园)The house was the private residence of Mr. Huang Yizhu (黄亦住), a rich Indonesian Chinese in the contemporary times. The complex has 3 houses, of which the middle one is the most gorgeous that was built with 100,000 silver dollars. What's special is that there is a mirror hung with razors and shaving brush in every room. That's because Mr. Huang led a poor life in his childhood, later he went to Southeast Asia and made for a living as a barber. Later, he turned to develop a cane sugar business and became the 'King of Sugar in Indonesia.' After returning to China, he settled down on GulangyuIsland. In the 1950s, the house was state guest house of the Xiamen Government. It hosted Teng Xiaoping, US ex-President Nixon and ex-President Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore.Add: No.25, Huangyan Road (晃岩路)4). Lin House (林屋)It was built in 1927 by Mr. Lin Quancheng (林全诚), the son of the house owner. Scenic View Villa (guan cai lou 观彩楼)On the top of Bijia Hill lies a European style villa, which was built in 1931 and designed by a Dutch. Hi Heaven Villa or Sea & Sky Villa (hai tian tang gou 海天堂构)It was built in the 1920s by Philippine Chinese Huang Xiuhuoliang (黄秀火良) and his Jinjiang countryman Mr. Huang Nianyi (黄念亿). The symmetrical villa complex is particularly magnificent, with its middle villa decorated with palatial architecture.Hi Heaven is split into three major sections. The first is the original living area for the family, now also used for the Nanyin Music concerts. The dome under which the musicians perform is quite unusual and not normally found in buildings of this size but indicates that a high ranking official originally lived in the house. The second area was originally the guest quarters or hotel, but is now used to host the puppet shows. The puppet show is worth seeing. The young puppeteers are highly skilled, spinning plates and throwing batons to one another in well rehearsed synchronized slapstick routines. The final area is the one that originally provided the concubines with their accommodation but is now used as a café, the Hi Heaven Café.Add: No.42, Fujian Road7). Foreign Lady Villa (fan po lou 番婆楼)The villa was built by Philippine Chinese Mr. Xu Jingquan (许经权) in 1927. Mr. Xu built the villa to reward his mother, who wore gold and silver jewellery and looked like a rich Southeast Asian millionaire woman. That's why the villa is called fan po lou or Foreign Lady Villa.Today, it's the place where a couple of writers open their Slowly Café.Add: No.36, Anhai Road (安海路)8). Octagonal Villa (八角楼)The villa was built in 1915 by Lin Erjia (林尔嘉) or Lin Shuzhuang (林菽庄), who is also the owner of ShuzhuangGarden. The French style villa also features Southern European and Baroque style. It has 5 floors and its vertical view is octagonal, that's why the name Octagonal Villa was born.Add: No.15, Lujiao Road (鹿礁路)9). Huang Rongyuan Villa (黄荣远堂)The ancient Rome style villa was built in 1920. It has many pillars, small and large, which are made of granite with carvings. The villa covers an area of 400 square metres. In 1873, HSBC set up its office in Xiamen. It's said that the Governor of HSBC used to live here for years.Add: No.57, Guxin Road (鼓新路)11). Yin House (yin zhai 殷宅)The house was built in 1925 by Mr. Yin Zuze (殷祖泽), the first son of the house owner. The renaissance house has five arched structures, three living rooms and four bedrooms.Add: No.126, Quanzhou Road12). Li Qingquan Villa (李清泉别墅)Mr. Li Qingquan, a contemporary Philippine Chinese, built the villa. In the cobbled courtyard, there are European style fountain, rockery, pavilion and precious araucaria.Add: No.7, Qishan Road (旗山路)13). Yang Family Houses (yang jia yuan 杨家园)The Yang Family has four villas on GulangyuIsland. The Zhongquan House (忠权楼) at Guxin Road is the most magnificent, while the house at Anhai Road is the most beautiful.Zhongquan House is a British style villa with grooved pillars and arched windows. 鼓浪屿(英语介绍)Gulangyu, separated from Xiamen by the 500-metre-wide Egret River, with an area of 1.77 square kilometres, enjoys a lauditory title "Garden on the Sea." The original name of the islet was Yuan Zhou Zi. In the Ming Dynasty it was renamed Gulang, meaning ''drum waves", because the holes in the southwestern reefs hit by the waves make sounds like the drum beating.Overlapping peaks foil the blue water, white clouds, green trees and bright flowers. The air in the islet is fresh. The entire place is free from any sorts of vehicles and is particularly quiet. All these render an atmosphere of a fairyland. The roar of the waves breaks on the rocks. Impressive melodies surrounding and lingering on this island make famous for its piano-laden past. As a place of residence for Westerners during Xiamen's colonial past, Gulangyu is famous for its architecture and for being home to China's largest piano museum. It is known as the piano island because people here love the piano. As early as 1913, students in schools run by foreigners started learning the piano. A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO GULANGYU ISLAND(Xiamen FAO)Gulangyu IslandBeing one of China’s key scenic spots (1988), the island covers an area of 1.98 square kilometers with a population of 19 thousand. It attracts numerous visitors from home and abroad with its natural beauty, the popularity of pianos and the buildings of miscellaneous styles and origins.Early in 1860s, Denmark has set up a telegraph company, Dabei (Great Nordic) Telegraph Company, in Gulangyu. The company had the best facilities of that time and could send telegraphs to Shanghai, Hongkong and Taiwan. Northern European countries including Denmark, Norway and Sweden also opened consulate offices in the company. After the Opium War in mid 19th century Xiamen was opened for foreign trade. A dozen of countries including Britain and US came to build consulates, trading companies, churches and residences on the island. In 1902 it was set a concession area. In 1920s and 30s a lot of overseas Chinese from southeast Asia came to settle on the island and built their houses. By far 70% of the buildings on the island have a Southeast Asian style.Gulangyu Island was the first stop of western culture on their way to China. Residents on the island received good education at that time and gradually developed an appetite for music. Since late 19th century the island has been a cradle/repository of talents in the field of science and technology.Hakuai HospitalSet up by Japanese in 1918, moved to Xiamen during the war against Japan and closed in 1945.Bright Moon ParkFormerly called Fuding Hill, it was the camp site for British troops during theiroccupation of Gulangyu from 1841 to 1845. In 1985 a giant statue of Zheng Chengong (15.7 meters high and made of 625 stones) was erected in the park and later complemented by other facilities to form the memorial garden of Zhen Chengong. There are bronze rilievos and a corridor decorated with inscribed steles. It used to be the location of Tait & Co. and hence gave its neighbourhood the name Dadeji (also as DaTaitJi).The Evil Trade of Chinese CooliesIn mid 19th century the trading companies established by foreign powers on Gulangyu Island were also engaged in the exploitation and sales of Chinese coolies. Tait & Co., Boyd Petroleum Co., Melcanpo & Co., and Jardine Matheson & Co. were among the biggest in this business at that time and therefore were called “Human Selling Companies”. The French first started human trade by shipping coolies from the ports in Xiamen and Gulangyu to Mauritius in 1845. Chinese laborers were also sold to Cuba, Honolulu, California, Sydney and some African islands. In the seven years from 1845 to 1852 there were as many as 6,255 Chinese sold to foreign counties from Gulangyu. Because these Chinese coolies lived a life worse than animal’s, they were often called “pigs.” This kind of labor trade lasted until the end of the 19th century.Yu GardenThe garden was built in 1984, covering 4,760 square meters. It is made in honor of Dr. Lin Qiaozhi, China’s most famous gynemetrics who w as born in 1901 on Gulangyu and died in 1983. She was the founder of China’s modern gynecotokology and was the first female academician of Chinese Academy.Lin’s MansionThe mansion comprises of five buildings constructed by two Taiwanese Mr. Lin Weiyuan and his son Mr. Lin Er’jia who came to settle on the mainland in 1896. Of the five buildings the one with the address No.15 was erected around 1915 and serves as the core part. It imitates an austere French style with rich rilievo decorations. Its front yard is paved with pebbles, reflecting an adaptation to the life in South China.Buildings of Early 20th Century(including Huang Rongyuan’s Mansion and Huang Nianyi’s Sea & Sky Building) Huang Rongyuan’s Mansion was built by Mr. Shi Guangcong, a Filipino Chinese in 1920 with typical western style represented by Roman columns and a variety of window frames. It is typical of all the buildings built on the island in early 20th century.Sea & Sky Building was built by Mr. Huang Nianyi, another Filipino Chinese in 1920s. It is composed of five houses. The roof follows the model of ancient Chinese palace with walls and rooms converting to western style.Catholic ChurchBuilt in 1917, it was the most typical Gothic structure in southern Fujian province.Former Japanese ConsulateBuilt in 1897 and being the work of a Chinese designer, it was a western style building. In 1928 another two houses were set up to the right of the first one and were occupied by the police guarding the consulate. The basement was once used to imprison anti-Japanese guerillas.Former British ConsulateFirst built in 1843. It was rebuilt twice, respectively in early 20th century and in recent years.。

Later, a vertical hole was formed in them. Whenever the tide flew in, waves rushed onto the crags, with a rumbling sound like an echo of the beating of a drum. So people called the crags "Cleaving Wave Crags". And the name of Gulang Island was derived.Gulang Island has always enjoyed the reputation of being "Land of Music" and "Land of Piano".
