In 2017, Amanda Gorman, then 19, was named the first National Youth Poet Laureate. She spoke with TFK’s Brian McGrath about poetry in her life.

Has poetry always been a part of your life?

I began writing songs when I was 5. When I got to middle school, I said to myself, “Amanda, you can’t sing at all.” But it seemed that the songs I was writing were actually poems. I began changing from music to poetry and spoken word.

What has poetry done for you?

Poetry allows me to choose my own voice. I have spent a lot of time writing prose (散文) stories. But they never felt like my own voice unless they played with rhythm (韵律), and connected different types of images the way my poems do. Often when I read my prose out loud, someone would say, “You know, that was a great poem.”

How did you start out as a youth leader?

My mom is an English teacher. She is very enthusiastic about what poetry can do in the classroom. She’d bring me into her classroom to lead poetry workshops (讲习班). That’s how I developed my skills in teaching.

How did this work grow?

When I was 16, I started an organization called One Pen One Page. The website is a place where students from around the world can tell their stories. And we help schools across the country teach poetry workshops. Every year, we hold a Write On! symposium (研讨会), which is all about using rhythm and the spoken word to effect social change within the community.

Have you found kids to be enthusiastic poets?

Kids bring a new type of energy to poetry. They want to write about anything under the sun. And they come to poetry without limitations about what it can be.

Every time author Alex Brown has released (发行) a book I have wasted no time in jumping straight in. I have always been honest about not being a fan of short stories as I have found them to be lacking in depth for me but when I saw that Alex Brown was bringing out a short story named Not Just for Christmas set in her much loved village of Tindledale I knew there was no way I could miss out on another visit to the village.

The main character in this short story is Kitty who appeared in the previous Tindledale books running her café The Spotted Pig Café. Kitty is a single mother of the lovely little Teddie after her husband died a true hero. Kitty and Teddie have adapted to life but then Kitty receives a phone call from Mack who was her husband’s best friend, with news that her husband’s dog Monty has been retired and needs a

home. Will Monty bring everlasting love to the family or will he bring up too many memories for Kitty?

I am over the moon that this book focuses on Kitty’s story as she is a character who has touched my heart in the Tindledale books and I have really wanted the author to explore her character more. The storyline is very moving but also uplifting too with a lovely touch of celebration.

This is the first short story I have read where the author has managed to put all of the feeling of a full length novel into a short story. The characters are well developed and soon work their way into your heart. The storyline also has great depth of feeling thanks to the challenging topics the author deals with. There are some touching moments and the one that really touched my heart was the comment (评论) Teddie made about her father.

It’s actually quite amazing how much happens in such a short story, but none of it feels rushed.

Back-to-back hurricanes hit the U.S. Virgin Islands last fall and caused a lot of damage. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has collected more than 736,000 cubic (立方的) yards of rubbish as they rush to clean up St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix, the Virgin Islands’ three major islands, but there is no place to put it. Some of the rubbish is metal (金属), some of it is wood and parts of buildings, but most of it is trees and other plants.

The Army Corps will ship the metal to the U.S. mainland to be sold. After being cut up into small parts, wood and other rubbish will be sent there, too. But it is much harder to get rid of the trees and big plants. The Army Corps wanted to burn the plant waste. It is the cheapest way to get rid of it, which was done in New York and New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

But people in the Virgin Islands thought it could harm their health and the health of the islands, too. The protest started on the island of St. John, which is circled by coral reefs (珊瑚礁) and includes a big national park. People on St. Thomas and St. Croix joined in, too.

Sending the plant waste to the mainland is not a good idea, either. It includes insects that could create problems in other areas. In Puerto Rico, an island in the Caribbean Sea, the Army Corps is cutting plant waste into mulch (护根), which helps improve the soil. People in the Virgin Islands like the idea. But there may not be enough space for all of it.

And some people are tired of waiting. Raphael Munchez, whose home was damaged, is one of those people. “We need our government to get back on its feet,” he said. “It’s struggling right now. Nobody is worried about pollution right now. We are worried about getting all of this rubbish off the island.”

I took a short flight the other day and offered an in-flight sandwich, which I took, known I wouldn’t eat it because it contained meat.
