At first, because of the lack of funds, Bartholdi only build a part of the statue -- the head and the torch-bearing arm, and these pieces were exhibited for publicity at international expositions.

The statue was given to the U.S. by France in 1885. The copper statue, dedicated on Oct.28, 1886, commemorates the centennial of the U.S. It’s also a gesture of friendship between the two nations.

Design
The face was modeled of Bartholdi’s mother. He designed the figure with a strong, uncomplicated silhouette, which would be set off well by its dramatic harbor placement and let the passengers on vessels entering New York Bay deeply inpressed.

The statue was built in France, shipped overseas in crates, and assembled on the completed pedestal on what was then called Bedloe's Island. President Grover Cleveland presided a dedication ceremony.
