There are 3 tasks for you to fulfill. You should read the materials carefully and do the tasks as you are instructed.Task1Telephone, television, radio and telegraph all help people communicate with each other. Because of these devices, ideas and news of events spread quickly all over the world. For example, within seconds, people can know the results of an election in another country. An international football match comes into the homes of everyone with a television set. News of a disaster such as an earthquake or flood can bring help from distant countries. Within hours, help is on the way. Because of modern technology like the satellites that travel around the world, information travel fast. How has this speed of communication changed the world? To many people, the world has become smaller. Of course this does not mean that the world is actually physically smaller. Of course this does not mean that the world is actually physically smaller. It means that the world seems smaller. Two hundred years ago, communication between the continents took a long time. All news was carried on ships that took weeks or even months to cross the oceans. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it took six weeks for news from Europe to reach Americas. This time difference influenced people’s actions. For example, one battle, in the war of 1812 between England and the United States could have been avoided. A peace agreement had already been signed. Peace was made in England. But the news of peace took six weeks to reach America. During these six weeks, the large and serious Battle of New Orleans was fought. Many people lost their lives after a peace treaty had been signed. They would not have died if news had come in time. In the past, communication took much more time than it does now.36. News spreads fast because of ____.A. new technologyB. a peace agreementC. the changes of the worldD. modern transportation37. According to this passage, _____ is very important to people in a disaster area.A. latest newsB. fast communicationC. new ideasD. modern technology.38. Which of the following statements is TRUE? _____A. The world is changing in size.B. The distance between England and America has changed since the War of 1812.C. The world now seems smaller because of faster communication.D. The world is actually smaller today.39. Two hundred years ago, news between the continents was carried _____.A. by airB. by seaC. by landD. by telephone and telegraph40. The New Orleans Battle could have been avoided if the peace agreement had been signed ____.A. in AmericaB. in EnglandC. by both sidesD. in timeTask 2When prices are low people will buy more, and when prices are high they will buy less. Every shopkeeper knows this. But at the same time, producers want higher price for their goods when they make more goods. How can we find the best price for the goods? The Law of Supply and Demand is the economist’s answer to this question.According to this law, changes in the prices of goods cause change in supply and demand. An increase in the price of the goods causes an increase in supply –then number of goods the producers make. Producers will make more goods when they can get higher prices for the goods. The producer makes more shoes as the price of shoes goes up. At the same time, an increase in the price of the goods causes a decrease in demand-the number of goods the consumers buy. This is because people buy less when the price is high. People buy fewer shoes as the price of shoes goes up. Conversely, a decrease in the price causes an increase in demand ( people buy more shoes) and a decrease in supply ( producers make fewer shoes).Business firms look at both supply and demand when they make decisions about price and production. They look for the equilibrium point where supply equals demand. At this point, the number of shoes produced is 3000 and the price of the shoes is $30. $30 is the equilibrium price: at this price the consumers will buy all of the 3000 shoes which the producers make. If the producers increase the price of the shoes, of if they produce more than 3000 shoes, the consumers will not buy all of the shoes. The producers will have a surplus –more supply than demand- so they must decrease the price in order to sell all of the shoes. On the other hand, if they make fewer than 3000 shoes, they will be a shoes shortage – more demand than supply- and the price will go up.According to the Law of Supply and Demand, the equilibrium price is the best price for the good. The consumers and the producers will agree on this price because it is the only price that helps them both equally.41. Why does an increase in price cause an increase in supply? ____A. Consumers buy more goods when prices are high.B. Producers make more goods when prices are high.C. Producers want to sell all of their goods.D. Consumers will not buy all of the goods.42. Why does a decrease in prices cause an increase in demand?A. Consumers buy fewer goods when prices are low.B. Producers make fewer goods when prices are low.C. Producers make more goods when prices are high.D. Consumers buy more goods when prices are low.43. What do business firms look at when they make decisions about prices and production?A. The supply curve.B. The demand curveC. The equilibrium pointD. All of the above.44. Why will consumers and producers agree on the equilibrium price?_____A. It will help them both equally.B. It is the only price for the goods.C. It is the lowest price.D. All of the goods will be sold.45. When will producers have a surplus of goods?A. when supply equals demands.B. When there is more supply than demand.C. When there is more demand than supply.D. When they sell all of their goods.Task 3Money is used for buying or selling goods, for measuring value and for storing wealth. Almost every society now has a money economy based on coins and bills of one kind or another. However, this has not always been true. In primitive societies a system of barter was used.Barter was a system of direct of exchange of goods. Somebody could exchange a sheep, for example, for anything in the market place that he or she considered to be of equal value. Barter, however, was a very unsatisfactory system because people’s precise needs were seldom met. People needed a more practical system of exchange, and various money systems developed based on goods that the members of society recognized ad having value. Cattle, grain, teeth, shells, feathers, salt, elephant tusks, and tobacco had all been used. Precious metals gradually took over because, when made into coins, they were portable, durable, recognizable, and divisible into larger and smaller units of value.A coin is a piece of metal, usually disc-shaped, which bears words, designs or numbers showing its value. Until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, coins were given monetary worth based on the exact amount of metal contained in them, but most modern coins are based on face value-the value that the government choose to give them, which doesn’t show the actual metal content. Coins have been made of gold, silver, copper, aluminum(铝), nickel (镍), lead, zinc(锌), plastic and in China even from tea leaves. Most governments now issue paper money in the form of bills, which are really ―promise to pay‖. Paper money is obviously easier to handle and much more convenient in the modern world. Checks and credit cards are being used increasingly, and it is possible to imagine a world where ―money ―in the form of coins and paper currency will no longer be sued. Even today, in the United States, many places, especially in filling stations will not accept cash at night for security reason.46. 2009年山东省成人本科英语真题试卷(题后含答案及解析)

2009年山东省成人本科英语真题试卷(题后含答案及解析)题型有: 2. Reading Comprehension 3. V ocabulary and Structure 5. Cloze 6. Translation 7. WritingPart I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.A child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as a rule, to have it retold in almost the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as formal texts. It is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what, in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better. A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. To prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who had not. As to fears, there are, I think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy stories. Often, however, this arises from the child having heard the story once. Familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered. There are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two-headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. I find such people, I must say it is peculiar(奇怪的)that I do not know how to argue with them. If their case were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girl-friend. No fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.1.The author considers that a fairy story is more effective when it is______.A.repeated without any changeB.treated as a jokeC.made some changes by the parentD.set in the present正确答案:C解析:事实细节题。

Reading Comprehension (40 points)Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage 1Questions 36—40 are based on the following passageTo understand how Americans think about things, it is necessary to understand “the point”. Americans mention it often: “Let’s get right to the point,” they will say. “My point is …”“What is the point of all this?”The “point” is the idea of the piece of information that Americans suppose is, or should be, at the center of people’ thinking, writings, and spoken comments. Speakers and writers are supposed to “make their points clear”, meaning that they are supposed to say or write clearly the idea of information they wish to express.People from many other cultures have different ideas about the point. Africans traditionally tell stories that express the thoughts they have in mind, rather than stating the point is. Thus, while an American might say to a friend , “I don’t think that coat goes very well with the rest of your outfit,” a Japanese might say , “Maybe this other coat would look eve n better than the one you have on .”Americans value a person who “gets right to the point.” Japanese are likely to consider such a person insensitive if not rude. The Chinese and Japanese languages are characterized by vagueness(模糊) and ambiguity(歧义).The precision and directness Americans associate with “the point” cannot be achieved ,and lest not with any grace, in Chinese and Japanese. Speakers of those languages thus have to learn a new way of reasoning and expressing their ideas if they are going to communicate satisfactorily with Americans.36. According to the passage, American expect speakers and writers to ______A. be clear about their man ideasB. give as much information as possibleC. express their personal viewsD. be honest about their true feelings37. Which of the following people will tell a story to express what they have in mind?A. AmericansB. AfricansC. JapaneseD. Chinese38. In the sentence “I don’t think that coat goes very well with the rest of your outfit”, the word “outfit” most probably means_____.A. officeB. timeC. speechD. clothes39. According to the passage, the Japanese may consider it unacceptable to be_____.A. indirectB. straightforwardC. poorly-dressedD. curious40. In order to communicate with Americans satisfactorily, speakers of Chinese need to____A. lean the language wellB. change their way of thinkingC. be careful about their choice of wordsD. explain their reasons clearlyPassage 2Questions 36—40 are based on the following passageMany young people tell me they want to be writers. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these young people are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours lonely at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want write,”I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”The reality is that writing is lonely, private and poor-paying. for every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never realized. When I left a 20-year career in the U. S. Army to become a freelance writer (自由撰稿者), I had expectation at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a true writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten any breakthrough and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell story that I barely made enough to eat .But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who gave up halfway. I would keep putting my dream to the test---even though it meant living with uncertaintyand fear of failure. This is the shadow-land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.41. The passage means to ______A. warn young people of the hardships that a writer has to experienceB. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writerC. show young people it’s unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fameD. encourage young people to pursue a writing career42. He found his dream would never come true.D. He hadn’t seen a change for the better.44. When the author began writing, he only had_____.A. a second-hand typewriter.B. a friend who helped him find a room to liveC. a cold room without a bathroomD. empty expectations of his future45. “shadow-land” in the last sentence refers to_____.A. the piece of land one often dreams aboutB. the state of uncertainty before one’s final goal is reachedC. the bright future that one is looking forward toD. a world that exists only in one’s imaginationPassage 3Questions 36—40 are based on the following passageMy friend Mike was shaking his head in disbelief. “That young woman who just waited onme ,”he said ,pointing to an employee of the fas t food restaurant where we eating , “had to call someone over to help her count out the change .the cash register(出纳机) showed her I need 99 nets ,but she couldn’t figure out how to count out the coins .”I understood Mike’s concern .What we have done in thi s country ,although unintentionally ,is to create several generations of individuals most of most of whom have no idea how to reason, how to do simple math ,how to do research ,or finally how to be creative .The reason for this is our overuse of information technology :video games, television, digital watches, calculators, and computer. information technology feeds us information without requiring us to think about it and let us perform operations without understanding them.It is time for us to take a hand look at an educational system that only teaches our children how to push buttons. Our kids can’t tell time if the clock has hands .they can use calculators but cannot add, subtract, divide or multiply. Video games have taken the place of active imaginative play .Although most of them are technically literate ,they choose not to read .They are so used to television and movies that they cannot use their imagination to stay interested in a book .It is not enough to recognize the problem. What we need is solution .the one I offer is simple to suggest , but may be impossible to carry out. We must unplug our children .If wedon’t, they will never learn how to solve problems. They will never learn basic reasoning skills and will certainly not develop creativity .Instead of filling classrooms with electronics, let’s to perform computer operations, but to figure and to figure and reason for themselves. They must see how things work and how process leads to results, they must also stretch their imagination.46. What seems to be the problem of the employee of the fast food restaurant?A. She does not know how to count coins.B. She is unable to solve simple math problem.C. She has no small change for the customers.D. She does not know how to operate cash registers47. What is the author’s and his friend Mike’s concern?A. The educational system is now creating people who can’t think for themselves.B. People now rarely do things on their own.C. Computers feed us too much information nowadays.D. The restaurant does not provide good service.48. For children to have imaginative minds, they must_____.A. be born with talentsB. be taught to read the right booksC .be dragged away from machinesD. have a large vocabulary49. What is the most probable meaning of “unplug o ur children” in the last paragraph?A. Give them freedom of enjoying themselves.B. Teach themC. Get them off TV and computer games.D. Turn off all the power in the schools.50. The conclusion of the article is that the authorbelieves_____A. electronics should have no place in classroomsB. information technology helps us to do things we do not understandC. all books benefit children more than anything elseD. information technology is new being overusedPassage4Questions 36—40 are based on the following passageAll of us communicate with one another nonverbally(不使用语言地),as well as with words. Most of the time we’re not aware that we are doing it. We gesture with elbows or a hand, meet someone else’s eyes and look away, change positions in a c hair. These actions we assume are occasional. However in recent years researchers have discovered that there is a system to them almost as consistent and understandable as language. One important kind of body language is eye behavior. Americans are careful about how and when they meet one another’s eyes. In our normal conversation, each eye contact lasts only about a second before one or both of us look away. When two Americans look searchingly into each other’s eyes, they become more intimate. Therefore, we carefully avoid this, except in suitable situations.Researchers who are engaged in the study of communication through body movement are not prepared to spell out a precise vocabulary of gestures. When an American rubs his nose, it may mean he is disagreeing with someone or refusing something. But there are other possible interpretations(解释),too. Anther example: when a student in conversation with a professor holds the older man’s eyes a little longer than is usual, it can be sign of respect; it can be a challenge to the professor’s authority; itcan be something else entirely. The researches look for patterns in the situation, not for a separate meaningful gesture.Communications between human beings would be just dull if it were all done with words.51. The main idea of this article is that________A. study of communication through body movement is a new scienceB. body movements are as important as words in communicationC. all of us communicate with one anotherD. eye behavior is the most important part in body language52. What do researchers think of body language?A. Body language can be understood and used by people in communication.B. Body language is more important than spoken language in communication.C. Body language has been discovered in recent years.D. Body language is the study of communication via body movement.53. The word“intimate” in paragraph two probably means______.A. greatB. closeC. goodD. important54. According to the passage, you make an American person feel uncomfortable if you_____.A. meet his eyesB. avoid meeting his eyesC. stare into his eyes for one secondD. look into his eyes for a long time55. The sentence “the researchers look for patterns in the situation, not for a separate meaningful gesture” means______.A. the researchers explain the meaning of a gesture according to the situation in which it is usedB. the researchers believe that one gesture has only one meaningC. the researchers think that one gesture cannot be used in different situationsD. the researchers look for patterns in textbooks to explain the meaning of a gestureV. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Many teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with the students. 71 If a long reading assignment is given, teachers expect students to be familiar with the information in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or give an examination. The ideal student is considered to be one who is motivated to learn for the sake of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades. When research is assigned, the professor in the United States expects the students to take the initiative and complete the assignment with less guidance. Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not be over-dependent on them. In the united States, professors have other duties besides teaching. Often they are responsible for administrative work within their departments. In addition, they may be obliged to publish articles and books. Therefore the time that a professor can spend with a student outside of class is limited. If a student has problems with classroom work, the student should either approach a professor during office hours or make appointment.Participation in the classroom is not only accepted but also expected of the students in many courses. Some professors base part of the final grade on the student’s oral participation. Although there are formal lectures during which the student has a passive role ( i.e. listening and taking notes), many courses are organized around classroom discussions, student questions and informal lectures. In the teaching of science and mathematics, the dominant mode of instruction is generally traditional with teachers presenting formal lectures and students taking note. However, new educational trends have psychology classes, for example, are often required to solve problems in groups ,design projects, make presentations and examine case studies. Since some college or university courses are “applied” rather than “theoretical”they stress “doing ” and involvement.51 When research is assigned the professor_______.Awill give the student some necessary guidanceB will not give student any guidanceC prefer that student not be dependent on him at allD expect the student to complete it under his guidance52 Which of the following is NOT the duity of an American professor?ASolving the students’ problem during office hoursB Being responsible for some administrative work.C Publishing articles and books.D Spending a lot of time with the students outside of the class.53 In the teaching of science and mathematics, the dominant mode of instruction is _______.A classroom discussionBstudent presentationCformal lecturesDinformal lecturesPassage TwoThe last few years have seen new wealth in the group of white-collar workers in China. Primarily this group consists of lawyers, artists, company presidents and employees of joint-venture companies. This group did not exist ten years ago. Business ventures such as real estate development, computer companies and travel agencies have nurtured this new class of ambitious Chinese who have tasted “the good life” and want even more of it.What are the marks of this group of people? First of all, it is defined by what its members have: cell phones, washing machines , microwave ovens, computers, homes and vacations. But this group is not only marked by material things. A psychological independence and carefree optimism is also present.Middel-aged successful company presidents, young prefessionals even college students are optimistic, expecting the best in their future.Chinese entrepreneurs(企业家)began accumulating money in the late 1980’s. But it was not until the middle 90’s that the material possession of the newly-rich----- cell phones, computers ,cars, houses----were easily available . These high-tech entrepreneurs quit state enterprise to start private companies nearly a decade ago, when China started to transform from a planned to a market economy. These early entrepreneurs are now wealthy by any country’s standards. However, like any newly-rich Chinese, they seem a little uncomfortable when asked about wealth. One reason for their discomfort is that they realize that the prosperity---wealth---that has created the group of newly-rich has not benefited all Chinese equally. Some entrepreneurs have move up in social status, but many workers have been laid off, losing their jobs temporarily for economic reason, from state-run factories. For most Chinese, the move into this style of life is still a step-by-step progress. It may be slow but many business people are hopeful. As a real estate entrepreneur fromBeijing said: “This is not just about money. It’s about a better quality of life.”55 The word “nurture”(Line 4, Prara1) probably means____________.A naturalizeB nourishC care for and educateD help the development ofWhy do many newly-rich chinese feel embarassed when asked about wealth56 According to the passage , which of the following are NOT marked of the newly-rich Chinese.A Great ambition and the whish for a new lifestyleB Houses and vacationsC Mobile phones and computersD Mental independence and optimism57 Why do many newly-rich Chinese feel embarrassed when saked about wealth?A Because they have higher social statusB Because they have quit state-run factoriesC Because they have fired many employeesD Because they know many others are not so wealthy58 Accoding to the real estate entrepreneur, many business people are looking forward to this Style of Life for the sake of_______.A more wealthB higher social statusC better quality of lifeD greater famePassage ThreeIn recent years a new and serious problem has arisen for international airlines and their passengers. This is the relatively new crime of hijacking. Once an unheard-of event, it has now become a common occurrence. There is not very much anyone can do once a hijacker is on board an aeroplane. He may be carrying a gun or hand grenades, which, if used, would cause a disaster. The only thing to do is try to ensure that these people never get on the plane in the first instance. So airlines all over the world have security procedures. Before any passenger can get on an airplane at the airport, he must go through a series of security checks to make sure he isn't carrying anything that is potentially dangerous or could be used as a weapon on board. The security measures vary from airport to airport. At some airports there is very little security. At other airports the security checks are very strict and it can take up to half-an-hour to get through them all.KaiTakAirport in Hong Kong, China, has a good security system. No aircraft start- ingits journey from Hong Kong has ever been hijacked. At Kai Tak, when a passenger first checks in, his or her name is matched with the computer list of passengers booked on that particular flight. If the name is not recognised, the passenger will be taken aside and questioned by security guards and may not be allowed on the plane. Next, every suitcase is X-ray checked before it goes into the plane. Any suitcase that seems to have something dangerous in it is not put on the plane. Then the hand baggagewhich the passengers will carry on to the plane is checked. Each passenger has to open his or her bag and the security clerk examines the contents. Cameras may be opened, even babies taken out of their prams and carry-cots. If there is anything that could be used as a weapon, a penknife for example, the security staff take it away and keep it in a safe place on the plane until the flight is over. The passenger can then collect it.Finally there is a body check of all passengers. They must pass through a door where X-rays will show if they are carrying anything made of metal, like a gun. If anything suspicious is found, they will be asked to explain. It is only after all these checks that a passenger is allowed to board the plane.59 According to the first paragraph which of the following will the author disagree?AHijacking is a relatively new crimeB Hijacking is practically unheard-ofC The number of Hijacking is increasingD Hijacking is a serious problem facing international airlines60 The only thing we can do to prevent the disaster caused byHijacking is to_________.A set up a series of security proceduresB exert control over gunsC fight bravely against the hijackingD meet the hijacker’s demand61 If there is anything that could be used as a weapon, the passager______.A can keep it in a safe place on the planeB can take it back from the security staff when the flight is overC may not be allowed on the planeD will be taken aside and questioned by security guards.62 At Kai Tak a passager has to get through all the following checks before boarding the plane except _______.A having his name matched with the computer listB having every suitcase X-ray checkedC having the hand baggage X-ray checkedD passing through a door for a body checkSection BDirections: Match the Chinese sentences in the left column with the English in the right英语试卷二第四部分翻译(共10题,每题2分,共20分)Part IV Translation(20 points, 2 points each)Section ADirection: Put the following sentences into Chinese.71 Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not be over-dependent on them._______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ 72 Since some college or university courses are “applied” rather than theoretically , they stress “doing “ and “involvement”_______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________73 However, like many newly-rich Chinese, they seem a little uncomfortable when asked about wealth._______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________74In recent years a new and serious problem has arisen for international airlines and their passengers _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________75 It is only after all these checks that a passenger is allowed to board the plane_______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Section BDirection: Put the following sentences into English.76 你最好穿件毛衣以防天气变冷。

There are 4 tasks for you to fulfill. You should read these materials carefully and do the tasks as you are instructed.Task 1Trees are useful to man in three very important ways: they provide him with wood and other products; they give him shade; and they help to prevent droughts (干旱) and floods.Unfortunately, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. Two thousand years ago a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself an empire (帝国). It gained the empire, but, without its trees, its soil became hard and poor. When the empire fell to pieces, the home country found itself faced by flood and starvation.Even though a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees, it is difficult for it to persuade villagers to see this. The villagers want wood to cook their food with; and they can earn money by selling wood. They are usually too lazy to plant and look after the trees. So, unless the government has a good system of control, or can educate the people, the forests will slowly disappear. This does not only mean that the villagers' children and grandchildren will have fewer trees. The results are even more serious, for where there are trees their roots break the soil up allowing the rain to sink in and also bind the soil, thus preventing its being washed away easily but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away from the surface, causing flood.51. What is the most important function of trees?A. Providing fuelB. Offering shade.C. Preventing natural disasterD. Providing wood.52. What eventually happened to the empire in the paragraph?A. Its people died of hunger.B. It fell to pieces.C. It became a giant empire.D. It built many ships with wood.53. It is implied in the passage that the villagers__________.A. want a plentiful supply of trees.B. want firewood badly.C. just want to get money.D. don't realize the importance of trees.54. The role of trees is to__________.A. loosen soilB. keep soil in positionC. harden soilD. both A and B55. What is the passage mainly concerned with?A. The benefits of trees.B. Trees and soil protectionC. The various uses of trees.D. Different attitudes toward trees.Task 2I came to study in the United States a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I was injured in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court (法庭).After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and determined to repay him one day. But the next day he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was astonished. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible for my injury, I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.But every time I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines and it cost me $215.My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident. Yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided to dismiss him. And he made me pay him $770.Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Due to my inexperience, I told the insurance company the date I was leaving America. Knowing that they played for time, I left without getting a cent.My experiences taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America money is everything. It is more important than friendship, honor or professional morality (职业道德). Secondly, foreigners are still being unfairly treated. So when we talk about America we should see both its good and bad sides.56. The author’s roommate offered to help him because_______.A. he felt sorry for the authorB. he thought it was a chance to make some moneyC. he knew the doctor was a very good oneD. he wanted the author to have a good lawyer57. A good doctor is essential for the author to _________.A. be properly treatedB. talk with the person responsible for the accidentC. recover before he leaves AmericaD. eventually get the responsible party to pay for his injury58. The word “charge” in this passage means_________.A. be responsibleB. accuseC. ask as a priceD. claim59. Both the doctor and the lawyer in this passage are very________.A. friendlyB. greedyC. professionalD. busy60. What conclusion can you draw from the story?A. Going to court is something very common in America.B. One must be very careful while driving a car.C. There are more bad sides in America than good sides.D. Money is more important than other things in the US.Task 3How men first learned to invent words is unknown, in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feeling, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken, or written in letter, we call words. The power of words, then lies in their associations – the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meanings for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appear powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should, therefore, learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.61. The origin of language is ______.A. a legend handed down from the pastB. a matter that is hidden or secretC. a question difficult to answerD. a problem not yet solved62. One of the reasons why men invented certain sounds to express thoughts and action was that _______.A. they could agree upon certain signsB. they could write them downC. they could communicate with each otherD. they could combine them together63. What is true about words? .A. they are used to express feeling only.B. they can not be written downC. they are simply soundsD. they are mysterious64. The real power of words exists in their ______.A. propertiesB. characteristicsC. peculiarityD. representative function65. Which of the following statements is true? .A. the more we read and learn, the more ignorant we areB. the more we read and learn, the more confused we will beC. the more we read and learn, the more learned we areD. the more we read and learn, the more snobbish we becomeTask 4Directions:The following is an email from Peter Smith. After reading it, you should give brief answers to the 5 questions (numbered 61 through 65) below. The answers (in no more than 5 words) should bewritten after the corresponding numbers.Sam and Joe are astronauts. There was once a very dangerous trip and the more experienced astronauts knew there was only a small chance of coming back alive. Sam and Joe, however, thought it would be exciting though a little dangerous. “We are the best men for the job,” they said to the boss. “There may be problems, but we can find the answers.”“They are the last people I’d trust,” thought the boss. “But all the other astronauts have refused to go.”Once they were in space, Joe had to go outside to make some repairs. When the repairs were done; he tried to get back inside the spaceship. But the door was locked. He knocked but there was no answer. He knocked again, louder this time, and again, no answer came. Then he hit the door as he could and finally a voice said, “Who’s there?”“It’s me. Who else could it be?” shouted Joe. Sam let him in all right but you can imagine that Joe never asked to go on a trip with Sam again.66. Why were most of the astronauts unwilling to go on the trip? They thought they .67.
