Passage 2
What would life be like if you give up using your cell phone? Will it become boring?
Twenty-eight eighth-graders at St. Matthew School in San Francisco will tell you it can still be rich and colorful.
These students took part in their school’s “te ch-free” challenge. They couldn’t use cell phones for two weeks from Nov 11 to Nov 22.
“The idea was to help students understand how technology has affected their lives,” said Denise Uhl, principal (校长) of the school.
Uhl did a survey on technology usage among the eighth-graders before thinking of the challenge. She found that 84 percent of the students said they didn’t like it “when everyone was on their cell phones”, but they didn’t know what to do about it. The answer was actually easy – to stop constantly (频繁地) using cell phones.
To help students understand the point, Uhl created the activity. It was warmly welcomed among students.
“I wanted to sign up for the tech-free challenge because it was just really a good idea to do it,” eighth-grader Joe told local newspaper Catholic San Francisco. “I wanted to get closer to my family. And it really worked. I started to hang out with my family more. We watched more family movies and we played a lot of board games.”
The activity also helped students develop their interests. During the two weeks, Lucas said he

Road to Courage
Have you ever thought that you are not a special person? Around us we see film and sports stars and smart people in our class. Sometimes we think that we can never be as good as other people.
US writer L. Frank Baum (1856-1919) wrote an amazing story for US kids to teach them that they could all be special. Since then, young readers all over the world have enjoyed and got confidence from his wonderful story.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (《绿野仙踪》1900) begins in Kansas, in the US Midwest. Dorothy is a girl who goes on an adventure outside of Kansas. But she is blown (吹) into the sky by a storm, with her house and her little dog Toto.
Dorothy lands in Munchkinland. In order to go back home, she must find the Wizard of Oz
whose great magic will send her safely back.
On the way to Oz she makes three new friends. The Scarecrow thinks he doesn’t have a brain (脑). The Tin Woodman believes he doesn’t have a heart. The Cowardly Lion is a coward (胆小鬼), at least he thinks so. They all hope the Wizard of Oz will help them.
