五代十国，天下割据，各国之间的门户之争非常激烈，楚王马殷与湘西部落的战争就发生在湘西门户永顺县的酉水之畔。
江西人士彭士愁定居在永顺后凭借其厚重的德性竟然被推举为土家部落首领，马殷之子马希范(第二代楚王)为了征服湘西的山民，便与彭在酉水(猛洞河)发生了大规模的战争，结果双方僵持不下，被迫签订了有名的溪州停战协议，并将协议内容可在国家二级文物溪州铜柱上。
按照协议，湘西各部落开始进入了自治管理的阶段，这就是在湘西延续了800多年的土司制度的诞生，当年酉水旁边的一个小村落也成了历史上第一个土司王府所在地，这个村庄到现在还被称为“王村”，如果不是因为上世纪80年代的一次大事情，我想王村之名还不会落寞下去。
