The boys took the objects to school. Their scientists teacher was interested. He tool the boys and objects to the American Museum of National History in New York. There, scientists examine the boys’ find. They said the objects indeed were teeth! The teeth had belonged to an elephant-like creature called mastodon.
In the spring, scientists from the museum came to Hackensack. They dug near the place where the boys had the teeth. They found nearly the entire skeleton of the mastodon. They dug up other bones, too. Some of these bones belonged to animals that had lived more than 10000 years ago.
