If you're in charge of a project, the key to success is getting everyone to want to help you. As a director, I suggest, I gently push the actors in the direction I want them to go. In the 1986 movie Nothing in Common, Jackie Gleason's character, Max Basner, gets fi red from his job as a clothing salesman. The scene, shot on a boat, shows Max's hopelessn ess about being out of work. I was looking for some ways that would allow Max to show his feelings.
Jackie had far more experience at everything than I did, and at first I was frightened. What could I possibly tell "The Great One" about acting? Out of fear I decided to direct b y suggestion, and I sat down with Gleason to talk about the scene. "So Max is sad, right? " I said.
Gleason nodded.
"And he's probably still carrying his pens with his name on them --- the ones he used to hand out to his customers, right?"
Gleason nodded.
"So what would you want to do with the pens after you were fired?"
He was silent for a moment. "Why don't I throw them overboard?"
I stood up and turned toward the crew. "Hey, everybody, Jackie has a wonderful idea.
Let's shoot it."
After filming the scene, Gleason called me over and said with a smile, "Garry, what ki nd of wonderful idea am I going to have tomorrow?"
You and your team can discover the answers to problems together. When there are no prizes or gold stars for those who get the solution first, you'll all benefit when everything t urns out right.[共5题]

There are over one million superstitions(迷信), and most people believe at least one o r two of them. Many people are superstitious about numbers. They think that there are luck y numbers and unlucky numbers. The number 13 is often considered unlucky. In some part s of the world, buildings have no 13th floor and streets have no houses with the number 1 3. In Japan,"4"is considered unlucky because in Japanese the word“four”is pronounced the s ame as the word "death". The Japanese never give gifts of four knives, four napkins, or fo ur of anything.
What are the lucky numbers? Seven is a lucky number in many places, and "8" is c onsidered a lucky number in Japan and China. In China, businesses often open on August 8, and many couples register to get married at eight past eight on August 8. Superstitions about numbers are so widespread that some people-called numerologists-make a living givin g advice about numbers. In 1937, when the Toyoda family of Japan wanted to form a car company, they asked a numerologist if "Toyoda" would be a good name for the company. The numerologist said it would not be. He explained that "Toyota" would be a better name for the company. The family took his advice. As a result, millions of people drive "Toyot as" and not "Toyodas."
There are many other kinds of superstitions. There are superstitions about eating, slee ping, sneezing and itching. There are superstitions about animals and holidays and horsesho es.
There are even superstitions about superstitions. Those superstitions tell people how to reverse bad luck. When the Japanese bump heads, they immediately bump heads again. Ac cording to a Japanese superstition, the first bump means their parents will die, but the seco nd bump "erases" the first bump. To reverse bad luck in general, people turn around three times, turn their pockets inside out, or put their hats on backwards. [共5题]

Although people are born to win, they are also born helpless and totally dependent on t heir environment. As we have noted, few people are total winners or losers. Most of them are winners in some areas of their lives and losers in other. Their winning or losing is infl uenced by what happens to them in childhood.
Winners successful make the transition from total helplessness to independence. Losers d o not. A lack of response to dependency needs, poor nutrition, unhappy relationships, diseas e, continuing disappointments, inadequate physical care, and terrible events are among the many experiences that contribute to making people losers. Such experiences interrupt, or pre vent the normal progress toward independence.
A winner is not afraid to do his own thinking and to use his own knowledge. He ca n separate facts from opinio n and doesn’t pretend to have all the answers. He listens to ot hers, evaluates what they say, but comes to his won conclusions.
A loser represses his capacity to express appropriately his full ranged of possible behavi or. He may be unaware of other choices for his life if the path he chooses goes nowhere. He is afraid to try new thins. He maintains his own status. He is a repeater. He repeats no t only his own mistakes, but also repeats those of his family and culture.
