The aspects of the American character that impress me most

Although American’s values and attitudes are different from ours, there are some aspects of the American character that I consider very good.

For American, honesty is the best policy. They usually just say what they mean, and mean what they say. Using a very common example, when somebody praises them, they will just say “thank you”. But we Chinese do not do this, we are modest. Even though we are glad to hear other people’s praise, we just don’t admit that and don’t accept their praise. We may say “just so-so” or “it’s not as good as what you say”. Now if anybody praises me, I will just say “3Q” and smile to them.

Americans are direct and assertive. I think they are very frank. When I see American movies or operas, I can always see the employees point out their boss’s mistakes, the students hand up to interrupt their teacher’s talking, the residents give suggestions to their government, etc. However, these are not common in China. What’s more, I have some American friends on my Facebook. They always write something about their real life and real experiences. And they just express their real feelings about somebody or something. To be honest, I won’t do things like that on QQ zone.

Sometimes I think we live a more complicated life than Americans, they can just speak and do things they like frankly, yet we always worry about this, worry about that. In a way, I think they are freer than us.

I envy Americans’ directness and honesty and assertiveness. I hope that we Chinese would become more frank and less modest, it may be better.
