Part A Passage 1:

Passage 2:

Part B Passage 1:
Modern means of transportation, telecommunication and mass media have shorte ned the geographical distance of the world. The international community appears to be no more than a global village, in which peoples of all nations engender mu tual respect and seek common development in cultural exchange. I’m with the vie w that in this modern world, the culture of any nation cannot develop in isolati on and that different cultures should learn from each other’s strengths to offs et their own weaknesses.∥
I think cultural exchange is by no means a process of losing one’s own cult ure to a foreign culture, but a process of losing one’s own culture to a foreig n culture, but a process of enriching each other’s national cultures. Of course, the culture of a nation must withhold its own distinctive national characterist ics in its extensive exchange with other cultures, and make contributions to the development of human civilization.
Passage 2:
By the end of July 1998, China had approved more than three hundred and fou rteen thousand foreign-invested projects since its opening to the rest of the wo rld in the late 1970s and more than half has begun operating. The China Informat ion reported that these projects have a combined contractual foreign investment of over US $ 540 billion. ∥
The last five years has witnessed the drastic growth of foreign investment, which has been playing a vital role in the development of our economy. Since 199 3, China has remained the second largest recipient of foreign funds, after the U nited States.

Passage 1:
In an era dominated by electronics and telecommunications, we can never emph asize too much the importance of change. Motorola defines “change” as challeng e and opportunity. The past decade has seen Motorola seize the opportunities ope ned up by changes in China and build itself into one of the most successful Amer ican investors in the country. ∥ With a firm commitment and substantial investm ent, we promote technological progress in China. By doing so, Motorola’s brand has become a household name in China. China is both an opportunity and a challen ge. We have laid a lot of groundwork, and helped China to implement its own stra tegy. We will reinvest and bring new technology into China.
Passage 2:
For most people, almost any place can become a tourist destination as long a s it is different from the place where the traveler usually lives. London may no t be a tourist attraction to a Londoner, but for a New Yorker it may have many c harms. Many big cities offer a unique atmosphere and history. The Great Wall and the Palace Museum of Beijing, and the cable cars of San Francisco are part of t he unusual atmosphere of those cities.∥
Smaller and yet well-known towns and rural areas throughout the world may al so have attractions of this kind that tourists visit. An excellent example is th e small village town of Stratford, Shakespeare’s birthplace. Of cour se, natural scenery has always been an attraction for tourists. Millions of people have visi ted Niagara Falls, for example. Its reputation as a place for a honeymoon resort is world-famous.

Passage 1:

Passage 2:
