W: No, but that's not the point. I need it to go with my new boots and it looks fashionable.
Q: Why did the woman buy the jacket?
(D) 这个对话中没有明显的因果关系信号词,但从上下文可以得出I need it to go with my new hoots就是女士买这件衣服的原因。
go with相当于match(搭配)。
因此答案为D。

M: I have some trouble with my sleep recently. And I have some chest pain.

因此女士抱怨的原因是太吵闹了。

Conversation One
M: We seem to have this conversation over and over again.
W: You are right.
M: Look, I know how you feel about my smoking. You don't have to tell me every day.
W: I'm sorry. I worry about you.
M: I know. But work and school have me so stressed out. Maybe I'll be able to quit it after I graduate.
W: Let's be honest. There's always going to be a reason. After you graduate, it's going to be hard to find a job, then there will be the stress from just starting a job, then.
M: OK, I get your point. It's just so hard. You don't really understand because you never smoke.
W: You need some help. Why don't you go to a doctor?
M: You mean a psychiatrist.
W: No, I don't mean a general practitioner. Maybe you can get a patch or some pills.
Well, I don't know, something to help you with the withdrawal, because that's what it is.
M: Really, I believe I can't quit on my own. But I'll think about it. I will.
W: All right. I won't mention it for a week. Then I want to know your decision.
M: But why?
W: Because I need to rethink our plans if you don't get some help.
M: You mean you'd break our engagement over this? I can't believe it.
W: I don't know. I love you, but I'm not sure I could accept everything that goes along with the smoking.

Section B
Passage One
Banks are not ordinarily prepared to pay out all accounts; they rely on depositors not to demand I payment all at the same time. If depositors should come to fear that a bank is not safe, that it cannot pay off all its depositors, then that fear might cause all the depositors to appear on the same day. If they did, the bank could not pay all accounts. However, if they did not all appear at once, then there would always be enough money to pay those who wanted their money when they wanted it. Mrs. Elsie Vaught has told us of a terrifying bank run that she experienced. One day in December of 1925 several banks failed to open in a city where Mrs. Vaught lived. The other banks expected a run the next day, and so the officers of the bank in which Mrs. Vaught worked as a teller had enough money on hand to pay off their depositors. The officers simply told the tellers to pay on demand. The next morning a crowd gathered in the bank and on the sidewalk outside. The length of the line made many think that the bank could not possibly pay off everyone. People began to push and then to fight for places near the tellers' windows. The power of the panic atmosphere was such that two tellers, though they knew that the bank was quite all right and could pay all depositors, drew their own money from the bank. Mrs. Vaught says that she had difficulty keeping herself from doing the same.

Passage Two
Men and women in the United States who want to become doctors usually attend four years of college or university; next they study for four years in a medical school. After that they work in hospitals as medical residents or doctors in training. This period may last from one to even five years.
During their university years, people who want to become doctors study science intensively. They must study biology, chemistry and other sciences. If they do not, they may have to return to college for more education in science before trying to enter medical school.
There are 125 medical schools in the United States. It is difficult to gain entrance
to them. Those who do the best in their studies have a greater chance of entering medical school. Each student also must pass a national examination to enter a medical school. Those who get top score have the best chance of being accepted. Most people who want to study medicine seek to enter a number of medical schools. This increases their chances of being accepted by one. In 1998, almost 47,000 people competed for about 17,000 openings in medical schools.

Passage Three
No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the world, but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada. In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people. As we get older, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesight.
Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on, the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people's attitude towards them.
Disabled people face many physical barriers. Next time you go shopping or to work or visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers: prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through, so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability, not their disability, which counts.

Section C
If you break your arm or leg, the doctor will (26) probably send you to a hospital to have an X-ray photograph taken to find out just where the break is and what kind of break it is. If a small child(27) swallows a coin or some other hard (28) object, as sometimes happens, the doctor will take an X-ray photograph of the child's (29) stomach. Every hospital has an X-ray (30) department, and doctors now depend on these (31) photographs to find out if there is anything wrong with the (32) lungs, for example, which cannot be seen from outside the body.
X-rays were first discovered by a German scientist, Wilhelm Konrad Rontgen, in 1895, almost by (33) accident.
He and other scientists were experimenting with passing electric currents through certain gases in a special glass tube. (34) Then one day Rontgen noticed that. even when the tube was covered with black paper, some strange kind of radiation was coming through. This aroused Rontgen's curiosity. The next thing he found out was that if he put his hand between the rays and a photographic plate, the rays would print a shadow of the bony framework of his hand on the plate. (35) So Rontgen made the first X-ray pictures of a hand. showing just how the bones in the hand fit together.
When Rontgen wrote an account of what he had discovered, (36) he calls these new rays X-rays, for "X" is a symbol often used for something which is not yet understood. Other scientists called them Rontgen rays in honor of the man who first found them, but X-ray is the name now commonly used.。
