The History of Roller Sports in China Roller sports was brought to China late in the 19th century. At that time, it was confined to a few coastal cities as a recreational activity. It was not until at the beginning of Reform and Opening up policy issued in 1980s when roller sports developed and spread from the South to the North and became popular in China. As a fashionable sport, Roller skating was popular with young people. Many districts established simply equipped roller sports arenas one after another to entertain them. More and more people begin to like the game and take up it from then on.
In 1980, Chinese Roller Sports Association was set up and joined the Federation International de Roller (FIRS). In 1986, Chinese Roller Sports Association joined Confederation of Asian Roller Sports (CARS), which enhanced the communication with International ro ller sports organization and learned the advanced experience of launching roller sports from abroad. At the same time, roller sports events were officially held in China. At that time, roller sports developed from recreational activities to competitive sports.
Shanghai held t he first “Canary Cup Speed Roller Sports Tournament” in May,1982. In October, the “World Cup Roller Sports Tournament” was held in Beijing. Based on the experiences from these two events, the first National Roller Sports Championships was held in Capital Workers' Stadium in October, 1983. There were two events in this competition, namely speed roller skating and artistic roller skating.
Confederation of Asian Roller Sports (CARS) began to hold the Asian Roller Sports Championships once every two years in 1985 in order to promote the development of roller sports in Asia. The first Asian Roller Sports Championships was held in Japan in which the Chinese delegation ranked the fourth in team total score. The second Championships was held in South Korea in 1987 when the Chinese delegation made a breakthrough: got medals for the first time and leaped into the top three. The third Championships was held in
Hangzhou, Zhejiang, 1989. From then on, roller sports teams in China were dispatched continuously to join every Asian Roller Sports Championships. In 1999, the Eighth Asian Roller Sports Championships was held in Jinshan, Shanghai. In 2008, the 13th Asian Roller Sports Championships was successfully held in Haining, China.
The 2005 World Roller Speed skating Championships, which is of the highest level in roller sports event so far in China, was held in Suzhou. In 2006, the first Roller Sports World Cup around Taihu Lake Marathon was also held in Suzhou where more than 1200 roller sports lovers around the world took part in.
At present, China has established comparatively complete game management system and technology standards to support speed roller skating and artistic roller skating, both of which have developed quickly and become the forte of Asia.
According to the survey, nearly 10 million people are participating in this sport. Haining established the first International standard indoor roller skating arena. Shanghai, Shenzhen, Qinhuangdao and other districts followed suit, constructing national standard sports ground and competition facilities. There are clubs in every district, together with many events and communication activities each year, all of which play important roles in promoting the development of roller sports in china。
