推荐信的份量直接关系到能否出国留学,能否获得奖学金等,作为对外联系的材料,是
其中一份较为重要的文件。

推荐信的目的是通过国内专家向对方介绍申请人的工作、学习和
专业方向等情况。

在出国申请是否成功的诸多要素中,有力的推荐信是录取的重要条件之一,
其份量仅次于于本科成绩单和标准化考试(gre、gmat、toefl)成绩。

多数学校都要求申请人提交两封到三封的推荐信,由教授、系主任或工作主管直接寄给
指定的单位。

一、选择推荐人
推荐信是了解申请人的重要依据,在研究生课程中尤其如此。

申请人可以选择现在或以
前的老师、教授或雇主。

推荐人必须熟悉学生的学习情况,了解学生的学习目的是否明确,
在学术上是否有前途,以及学生的适应能力、创造能力、品行和特长。

书写推荐信的最理想的人选是一封由系主任写,一封由专业课教授写,一封由自己的导
师写。

不过,对方若无规定,则除了自己的亲属之外,任何人皆可为推荐人。

推荐人一般应
具备高级技术职称,如教授、副教授、研究员、副研究员等。

如果推荐人在国内外学术界享
有盛誉,或者被申请就读学校聘为客座教授,或者曾经在该校讲过学,那么这样的推荐人写
的推荐信就具有很强的效力了。

二、推荐信的内容
推荐信一般应包括下列内容:
被推荐人的基本情况介绍。

侧重于个人的毕业时间、学校、所获学位以及个人的专业经
历。

推荐人对被推荐人的基本评价。

侧重于被推荐人的专业基础、个性、特点、工作态度和
在学术上的前途估计。

若是推荐研究生,推荐人还需进一步说明其深造学习的基础和当前所
具备的研究能力。

显然,恰如其分地评价被推荐人的基础、能力和前途,比言过其实的赞誉
更令人情服,更具有实际意义。

推荐人可以着重介绍被推荐人曾经获得的奖励,发表过的论文,参加过的重要学术会议,
以及曾在学生组织或学术团体中的任职等来支持自己的评价。

推荐人还必须清楚地表明被推荐人留学的身份是研究生还是访问学者,专业领域和研究
方向是什么。

如果大学提供了现成的推荐表格,则必须按这类表格认真逐项填写。

推荐
表格中一般有学生综合评估的一项,即要求推荐人说明该生在所教的学生中应列为前5%,
10%,或25%等。

这种评估是指教授的个人评价,可以稍高一点。

另外,推荐表格上常有许
多难以填写的项目,遇到这种情形可填i dont know,亦不致对该生的评价有何严重影响。

推荐信样例一(管理)

申请过程不繁,我递交了简历,特别标注了math tutor的工作经历,拟了求职信 etc。

申请是rolling basis, 但我申请的很早,所以还有的挑校区。

上海离杭州近,我便选择了
上外校区。

当时觉得ta 是个很神秘的工作。

虽然我的目的明确—---为了推荐信,但是ta本身的
经历也吸引着我,并且最终带给我成长。

它要求我上课期间保持12分的专注,对知识点了如
指掌。

它让我在不断回答问题的过程中体会teaching的艺术性。

我的‘学生们’只比我小个
一两岁,所以我要掌握好友好和威信的平衡:我记住70多人的名字,鼓励他们,也互相开玩
笑,但是考试作弊零分没商量。

暑校结束考评的时候,看到他们给我的可爱的打分和评语,
我觉得当老师是一件非常幸福的,有成就感的工作。

和教授的相处上,却没有我想的容易。

wilfred goes by bill,我便称呼他比尔。

他老人
家很慢热,加上时差反应剧烈,来上海一周我都没有机会邀请他出去吃饭。

他每天就吃花生
酱,中午花生酱,晚上花生酱,穿的衣服上也是写着花生酱。

一个很聪明,但是很内向的人。

我第一周和他交流的机会很少,除了工作上的。

和他说话一开始很累,老冷场,但多次尝试
之后,我发现了他的喜好。

于是从第二周开始对他展开一波又一波进攻,屡屡得手,哈哈。

他时差倒好之后,我带他去龙之梦吃了晚饭,被他评价为来中国以后吃到的最好的一顿
(废话你天天吃花生酱)。

周六带他转了法租界,吃了上海菜,又被评为最好吃的一顿。

从此以后他很愿意和我出
去吃吃饭,并且总是让我点菜。

于是我们多了很多聊天的机会。

吃货也是有用的才能。

第三个周末我邀请他去杭州玩。

到了我的地盘上事情就更好办了。

他最后开心到什么程
度呢,他感慨说要是scp在杭州该有多好呢。

最后非常依依不舍得带着张小泉剪刀和西溪湿
地的烧酒回了上海。

杭州于是成为他最喜爱的中国城市。

在和他游玩的过程中,我们有了许多有意义的对话。

他看了我的fixed point paper,说
it’s very impressive for a junior to write an article like that. 我还找机会给他看了我为
housing research收集的资料。

告诉他我在iowa找不到教授教我做研究,但是我真的很喜
欢research,这些都是我空余时间做的。

比尔回答,‘读你的东西让我想到自己年轻的时候,
i was on my own when i was an undergrad as well.’我非常感动。

暑校的时间很短,但我和比尔已经bonded了。

不久后开学,我们一直保持邮件联系。


每周都会给他汇报生活,学习情况,和intellectual interests。

他有时回,有时不回,三
番五次以后我能准确预测他会不会回复。

期末考试那周很忙,便没有给他写信,他竟然主动
写信给我,说怎么这一阵没有你的消息?申请和生活都有什么进展?
后来我们成了笔友,最少每周来回一封,多时好几封。

他的幽默让我捧腹。

比尔在我的
申请过程中给了很多帮助和金玉良言。

他帮我写了一封favorable letter,帮我修改了个人
陈述,最重要的是告诉我admission process的内部消息,告诉我过了deadline交材料不要
紧,一定要waive right to see letters, gre quan一定要96%以上,verbal没关系,等等
等等。

我觉得哪怕他的信比重不是很大(毕竟我没有上过他的课),他给我申请过程的种种建
议救了我好几命。

没有比尔,我不可能顺利圆梦。

没有scp,我也不能认识比尔,收获这份珍贵的友谊。

所以特别感谢scp的这次助教机会,让我峰回路转,柳暗花明。

甜。

你要死要活,托关系死缠烂打乞讨来的推荐信往往没有什么效力。

记住,当你决定申请
的那一刻开始,申请就已经开始了,而绝不是等到提交申请材料的那几个月。

笔者想以自己的切身经历来阐述这个问题。

在决定申请后,找哪些人写,从哪些角度写
推荐信,心里一定要数,必要时还可以几个候补名单:-)。

比如,笔者借参加竞赛的机会向教
授咨询意见,然后是长达半年的沟通和不断汇报自己的
进步,终于获得了参加其研究的机会,于是,一封推荐信水到渠成。

另外,笔者选修某
教授的课程,坚持每个office hour时间都去讨论一些问题。

(注意,一点小的经验是这些问
题要可持续讨论,比如做点改进后下周再去)结果顺利拿到暑期项目机会,另一封推荐信搞
定。

如此,笔者没有开口索要,反而教授们在得知我要申请时都主动提出为我撰写推荐信。

因此,推荐信的索取是一个长期的,动态的过程,要考验一个人的机智、策略和耐心。

推荐
信的索取往往是困难的,在无数次想放弃的时候,都需要坚定的信念来支撑。

殊不知,推荐
信的价值恰恰在于它的难度,不是每个人都能弄到有价值的推荐信。

如果老师不了解你,或
者除了上课以外并无其它关联,一封推荐信上只有某某学习努力,经常提问,在我的课上考
的前三名这样的话是没有多大力度的。

俗话说,“攻心为上”,如果老师真的愿意帮你,写出
来的推荐信还是不一样的。

索取推荐信后的撰写工作也十分讲究,即便跟老师不太熟悉,在这一步中也要设法补救。

以上是我对推荐信的索取和撰写的一点个人心得,希望对大家有所帮助。

申请的工作是
一项系统工程,不要过问某项是否有价值,有多少价值,尽心走好每一步就是了,因为你永
远不可能提前知道到底什么会提到关键性的作用。

保持一种良好的心态才是制胜的关键。
