The British monarch, currently Queen the Elizabeth II, is the nominal head of executive, judicial and legislative branches in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
However, as is known, Britain is a constitutional monarchy. “The monarch plays a largely ceremonial role and on political matters acts on the advice of ministers.”
The British monarch has many rights, including the right to choose the Prime Minister and the right to call and dissolve parliament. However, according to the constitution, the Prime Minister is the leader of the largest party in the House of Commons. “The fact that the major parties now elect their own leaders has virtually removed any element of the choice of Prime Ministers from the monarch.” In other words, the right to choose the Prime Minister has been taken away from the monarch. Besides, the Parliament is dissolved at the time which is suggested by the Prime Minister. So the royal powers or the royal prerogative such as the power to appoint ministers are actually exercised by the Prime Minister, with the formal consent of the monarch.。
