从合作原则看 生活大爆炸 中的幽默

[摘 要] 在交际中,为了保证会话的顺利进行,语用学中的合作原则要求交谈双方都必须遵守一些基本准则以期获得交际成功。但人们有时会故意违反合作原则中的某条或某几条准则,目的是想表达一定的会话含义,而这时幽默就会产生。本文以正在热播的美国室内情景喜剧 生活大爆炸 中的一些典型对白为例,逐条分析了其中的幽默产生机制,以期英语学习者和爱好者能够更好地理解合作原则,轻松地欣赏蕴藏在这些对白中的幽默。[关键词] 合作原则;情景喜剧;生活大爆炸;幽默 情景喜剧(situation co medy )最早出现于美国广播的黄金时代(20世纪20年代至50年代),及至20世纪90年代以后,它逐渐占领了美国电视剧的黄金时段,成为非常受欢迎的节目类型。美国情景喜剧浓缩了美国的价值观、风土人情、民族性格等文化特征,人物对白所制造的大量笑料往往根植于本土文化,在诙谐幽默的语言中展开情景,突出一系列情景的不协调,从而达到让人捧腹的效果。已经热播多年的 成长的烦恼 老友记 等曾给一代甚至几代人的生活都增添了无穷的乐趣。2007年由CBS 公司推出,目前正在热播的 生活大爆炸 又给人耳目一新的感觉。这是一部以?科学天才#为背景的情景喜剧。讲述了一个美女P enny 和四个科学宅男L eonard 、Sheldon 、H ow a rd 和Rajesh 的故事。该剧凭借几位主角精彩绝伦的台词,令人眼花缭乱的科学理论,再加以独具人物特色的幽默语言风格,让人忍俊不禁,在2010年第36届美国人民选择奖(P eople s Choice A war ds )中获得人民最爱的喜剧类电视剧奖。
幽默与合作原则
美国语言学家格赖斯(H.P.Gr ice)在1975年首次提出了合作原则(Coo per ativ e P rinciple)。他发现人们为了保证会话的顺利进行,交谈双方都需要共同遵守一些基本原则,他把这一原则总结为四个准则:量的准则(M ax ims of quantity )???尽量提供对方所需信息,不提供冗余信息;质的准则(M ax ims of qualit y)???只讲真实的话,不要说自知是虚假的话;关系准则(M ax im of rele v ance)???所讲的话要有联系;方式准则(M ax ims of manner)???讲话要简练、清楚、有条理。不同于严格的语言规则,上述原则是可以违反的。当人们违反某条或某几条准则时,会话含义就会产生,听话人应能够从他所听到的话中推导出说话人有可能表达的言外之意,而会话中的幽默机制就蕴含在这些弦外之音中。下面将以 生活大爆炸 中的一些对白为例,来一一解释由于合作原则的违反而引发的幽默效果。
(一)违反量的准则
量的准则要求说话者给出的信息既不能比需要的多,也不能信息不足。当说话者故意跨越量的准则的边界,提供过多或过少的有效信息,违背了听者正常的思维模式时,
就会产生另外的语境信息,从而产生幽默。
例1 L enar d:W hat did I do w rong ?
Sheldon:W hy ar e y ou asking me?I have no info rmatio n about yo ur interactions w ith P enny o ther than w hat yo u hav e pro vided me,nor do I hav e any metho d of learning such thing s.
例1这段对话发生之前,Sheldo n 在和Penny 的谈话中得知P 只上过社区大学,她因为害怕L 看不起自己而就学历问题撒了谎,并要求S 替自己保守秘密。S 最不擅长的就是保守秘密,所以当L 向P 示好被拒绝的时候,他自问?我到底做错了什么?#S 作为旁观者完全可以不回答这个问题或者说?我不知道#即可。可是因为心中有鬼(保守秘密),他认为L 在怀疑自己,所以就说?为什么问我?我除了你告诉我的你和P 的事情,其他什么也不知道,而且也没有任何获取这些信息的途径。#在后面的剧情中S 会?越描越黑#,他提供的过量信息让本来就迷惑不解的L 更是一头雾水,这些都给观众提供了绝好的笑料。

当S 告诉P 自己不能保守秘密的时候,P 问他?为什么保守这么小小一个秘密对你来说就这么难?#S 只需要回答?我天生就不能保守秘密#就可以完成这个信息的交流了。可是他却开始滔滔不绝地解释自己因为不能保守秘密而被一所颇具声望的政府研究机构拒绝参与一个秘密军事项目。在无意间,他又泄露了一个天大的秘密。这个?多余#的秘密正是因为违反了量的准则而给我们带来了令人

(二)违反质的准则
质的准则要求说话人不要说自知是虚假和缺乏足够证据的话。违反了质的准则的谈话可能的结果是谈话中没有任何有效信息的交流,信息量来自言外之意,因而有可能产生理解偏差,造成不同的结果。喜剧就利用这一准则的违反造成的理解偏差形成说话者与受话者假设的背离,产生幽默效果。
例3 Sheldo n:I v e never slept o n an a ir mattr ess be f ore.N o lumbar suppo rt w hatsoever.
H owa rd:M aybe you d be ha ppier o n a par k bench.
Sheldo n:I don t see any w ay to get a park bench in here.
S 在H ow ard 家借宿。一向挑剔的他并不受H 的欢迎。睡在H 的气垫床上还抱怨腰部没有支撑不舒服,这让本来就不高兴的H 说?你睡公园的长凳上就舒服了#。言外之意是有你睡的地方就不错了,还挑三拣四的。而这一点言外之意S 却没能体会到,反而说自己没看出这里哪有公园长凳。
例4 Penny:H o w come yo u didn t go in to w ork to day?
Sheldo n:I m taking a sabbatical because I w on t kow t ow to mediocre minds.
当P 问S 为什么没有去上班时,S 出于自尊没有直接告知P 自己被老板解雇了,相反他说自己在休假,因为自己不愿向平庸之辈屈服。这种自我安慰的借口和心态又一次成功塑造了S 清高单纯而天真的形象,为我们提供了笑料。
(三)违反关系准则
关系准则的要求就是要相关,不要讲与主题无关的话。例5 H ow ar d:What do yo u recommend fo r someo ne with a man-sized appetite fro m a mor ning of w eig ht -tr ain ing and car dio -funk?
Penny:A sho wer.
这段对话生动地刻画出H 无时无刻不想跟P 搭讪讨好她的猥琐形象,可惜每次他总会无趣地败下阵来。当P 问他们是否准备好点餐时,H 问P 有什么菜品可以推荐给他这个?做了一早上举重和有氧操全身散发着甜美气息的型男#,P 没有推荐任何菜品,而是冷酷而讥讽地建议他?洗个澡吧#。P 有意把问话的重点进行了转移,而这一转移是合情合理的,因为P 一直都非常讨厌H 这个小丑似的男人,所以并不为H 特意对自己的标榜所动,还很好地讽刺了H 一下,让H 顿时自感无味,败下阵来。
例6 L enard:Well,w hat did she mean by that?Was that just a generic platit ude o r was that a subtle bid fo r atten t ion?
Sheldo n:Y ou kno w w hy this hamburger sur passes the Big Boy?T his is a sing le-decker ,whereas t he Big Boy is a do uble-decker.T his has a much mo re sat isfying meat -to -bun-to-condiment ratio.
L 对P 的话不理解,不知道P 是在出于礼貌的安慰他还是在巧妙地吸引他的注意,于是向S 发出不解的疑问。
而S 没有回答L 的问题,相反他说了一堆这家汉堡店比?the Big Bo y #高出一筹的诸多原因。S 的回答与L 的提问毫不相干,却也反映出自己不想跟L 探讨其感情纠葛的意愿,从而通过评论汉堡店的好坏来躲避回答这个问题。
(四)违反方式准则
方式准则很多时候它更像是一条社会交往准则。有礼貌,言谈简洁,表达清晰,避免晦涩。但是有时候为了顾及听话人的面子,人们经常会采用委婉,甚至啰嗦的话语来表达真正想法。
例7 L enar d:Can you tell I m per spiring a litt le?
Sheldon:No.T he dark crescent -shaped patterns un der yo ur arms concea l it nicely.
第一次跟P 约会,L 异常紧张,衬衣都湿了。他问S 能否看出自己紧张得出汗了,S 没有直接回答,而是说?看不出来,你腋下深色的新月状图案将它隐藏得很好#。这个对话不但违反了方式原则,也违反了刚才提到的质的原则。
例8:Penny:So I ve kno wn for a w hile now t hat L eon ard has had a little crush on me %
Sheldon:A little cr ush?Well,I suppose so,in the same way M enelaus had a lit tle crush on Helen o f T ro y.
当P 告诉S 她知道L ?有点喜欢#自己的时候,S 对这个措辞表示不同意,但他没有用简单直接的方式告诉P,而是引用了斯巴达王对特洛伊城的海伦的喜欢程度做了比喻,言下之意就是L 对P 的爱已经到了痴迷的程度。但是对于文化水平较低的P 来说,这样比喻无疑超出了她的理解力,使得P 一头雾水,仍然不知道L 对自己的爱到底有多深。
结 语
生活大爆炸 是一部成功的剧集。剧中笑料包袱不断,这些都建立在编剧高超的语言驾驭能力以及演员精彩绝伦的表演能力之上。本文分析的幽默机制是站在合作原则这一理论的基础之上,通过对多个例句因违反合作原则而成为笑料的分析,希望英语学习与爱好者能重视会话含义从而更好地理解和体会剧情及其中的文化。[参考文献]
