摘要：what在英语中是个很常用的词，但它是近几年高考的热点和难点，本文将结合典型例句和高考真题对what用法加以总结归纳。

（一）What is …like？

1、询问天气，气候What is the weather like today？

2、询问长相What is the camel like ？

3、询问人的品质— What is your teacher like？

— She is very kind and beautiful.

4、询问情况What will life be like in the future ？

注意：“What is…like？”通常用于对某人、某地和某物的实际情况提问，包括对其内在的品质或外在的特征（或持久的特征）提问；而What… look like？（只是询问外表）

（二）What do you think of…？

用于询问对方对……的看法或评价。例如：What do you think of the idea？注意：“ What do you think of…？”是惯用搭配，不能改为“How do you think of…？”。但可以说：How do you feel about…？或者How do you like …或

者How do you find…?

（三）What …do with sth./sb？

意为“（怎样）处理﹑安排或对付等”例如：What will you do with the letter？注意：do with 与deal with同义，但搭配不同：do with与what搭配，而deal with可与不同的疑问词搭配。比较：I don’t know what to do with the money.和I don’t know how to deal with the money.

二、在复合句中的应用

（一）引导比较状语从句，意为“恰像，犹如，好比”

常构成A is to B what C is to D. 固定句式，意为“A和B的关系正如C和D 一样”

例如：Air is to us what water is to fish.

（二）引导名词性从句，what用作连接代词，在从句中可以作主语、宾语、表语、定语

例如：What made the school proud was that more than 90% of the students had been admitted to key universities.（引导主语从句，在从句中作主语）

例如：The city is not what it used to be.（引导表语从句，在从句中作表语）例如：A man’s worth lays not so much in what he has as in what he is. （引导宾从，在从句中作宾语和表语）

（三）what 用作关系形容词，作定语

例如：I will lend you what few reference books I can spare.

三、what的一些习惯用语

（一）What if…？如果（假如）…将会怎么样

例如：What if a storm should come up？

（二）What about…？(表建议或征求对方意见) 意为“……怎么样?”相当于：How about…

例如：What about going to the movies ?

（三）What for?(=why)(口语) 为何,为什么

例如：——Susan,will you please go and empty that drawer? ——What for?

（四）So what？(表示不感兴趣或认为不重要) 那又怎么样? (口语)

例如：——It is said that he has been many countries.

——So what?

（五）What’s more.相当于Further more或Besides，意为“再有，还有”（六）What if…?(表示建议或疑虑等) 倘使……将会怎么样; 即使……又怎么样例如：——What if I move the picture over here?——I suppose it will look better.

四、what的其它用法

（一）问价格﹑度量﹑速度、人口﹑面积﹑门牌（汽车﹑电话等）号码等

例如：1、What is the cost of the gold watch？2、What is the speed of the car？3、What is the length of the lake？4、What is the population of China？5、What money have you got？6、What is your telephone number？

（二）what用作名词

例如：By asking why，how and what if，curious minds find new ideas and solutions.

（三）what的强调形式

例1：Whatever she does is ridiculous.（引导名从，相当于Anything that）。例2: Whatever others say, he is always coming late. (引导让步状从，相当于no matter what)
