Located at the heart of the academy, lecture hall is the most important place for teaching and essential ceremony as well as the core of all construction of the academy. In the Southern Song Dynasty, the famous scholar Zhang Shi and Zhu Xi made a joint lecture here, which was the first joint lecture in the Confucian academies of China. In the center of the hall are two gilding inscribed wooden boards. One reads “Learn before you can probe the infiniteness of the universe”. Emperor Kang Xi of the Qing Dynasty inscribed it to encourage the idealists to advocate their philosophy and improve their self-cultivation. The second board was inscribed by Emperor Qian Long and it reads “The doctrines taught here in the south are genuine Confucian doctrines”. This is the highest praise indicating the essential status of the academy in the history of the idealism.

Yuelu Academy
Yuelu Academy, located at the east foot of the Yuelu Mountain, is one of the four famous academies of higher learning in ancient China. The other three are Bailudong Academy in Jiangxi Province, Songyang Academy and Suiyang Academy in Henan Province. Yuelu Academy was established by Zhu Dong, a civil officer in 976 AD during the time of the Northern Song Dynasty. The academy existed through the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was changed into Hunan Institute of Higher Learning in 1903, and later renamed Hunan Normal College, Hunan Public Polytechnic School, and finally Hunan University in 1926, a comprehensive university with a balanced development of various disciplines. Now, it is the only one of the ancient Chinese academies of classical learning which has developed into a modern university.

Enduring more than 1,000 years of wind and rain, the academy was frequently restored. Most of its present constructions were rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty, including the main gate, the second gate, lecture hall, Banxue Room, classic-revising hall of Xiang Shui, Yushu Library, and other six temples, eight gardens, four memorial buildings. Among them, The main gate and lecture hall are most impressive. The main gate was formerly built in the Song Dynasty, and was then called central gate. The words“Yuelu Academy” on the horizontal board were inscriptions of Zhenzong, an emperor of the Song Dynasty. It was said that in the Northern Song Dynasty, Zhenzong learnt the education reputation of Yuelu Academy and the virtue of the master, Zhou Shi, so he ordered Zhou Shi to the capital for an interview and gave him the title, Master of the imperial college, hoping that he would stay in the capital to give lectures.

However, Zhou Shi longed for his Yuelu Academy and insisted on going back. So, the emperor awarded his majesty’s own handwriting “Yuelu Academy” to hang on the top of the main gate and meanwhile presented him with some other classics to take back to the academy. From then on, Yuelu Academy became well known all around the country and students came to study in an endless stream. Now on the door posts of the gate are couplets which read “The kingdom of Chu, unique home of talents. Yuelu Academy is where they are more abundant than anywhere else.” This couplet originates from Chinese classics and it is very appropriate given the fact that talents have been brought up continuously by the academy since its establishment.
