Every year in America, high-school students who want to go to college take a national

examination called the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT in a shortened way. Their score is an

important factor in determining which colleges will admit them or whether any will be admitted

at all. The Scholastic Aptitude Test measures one's mathematical ability and use of the English

language. Traditionally, the English part involved grammatical questions and paragraphs that test

reading comprehension.

But the SAT folks have added a single question, to be answered in an essay, hand-written on the

spot. That's an interesting way to test writing ability, but content aside, have you ever seen young

people's handwriting lately? Or anyone's for that matter, in this age of computer keyboards?

Students write numbers and sign their names on bank checks. They scribble class notes in what can

generously be described as the written word.

Yet today's kids are asked to write, thoughtfully and clearly, for several minutes on this SAT Test.

Good luck to the text scorers who must work out difficultly the scrawl ( 潦草的字迹 ) of young people

who've been typing on computers since the age of three! Teachers insist that good handwriting can

not only help one's score on the SAT, but also, later on in life, impress potential employers. And

don't forget, we all have to turn to handwriting from time to time, as computers

go down when power goes out.

Then how to improve the handwriting? Well, with a few simple steps you can improve

your hand writing.

Position the pen. You should hold the pen between the forefinger and the thumb, then rest it

near the first knuckle ( 指节 ) of the middle finger. The rest of your fingers should be curled (卷曲) under your hand and your hand should remain relaxed.

Evaluate your writing. Make changes to your letters till you like how they look.

Take your time. Speed is bound to make your writing messy-looking.

Practice. Practice it a lot; it's not enough to do it once and hope for the best. It has to be something you work at to make great improvements.

(1) The underlined word “scribble ” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.

A. write quickly and roughly

B. type simply and correctly

C. paint clearly and

neatly D. describe properly and well

(2) According to Paragraph 3, students with good handwriting skill ________.

A. can pass the SAT

B. can develop good characters

C. can impress their classmates

D. can get more job opportunities

(3) Which of the following should you avoid when improving your handwriting?

A. Practicing writing a lot.

B. Writing as fast as you can.

C. Relaxing your hand when holding the pen.

D. Changing your letters till you like how they look.

(4) The text is to present the fact that ________.

A. writing seems to be very important in the SAT

B. those who will go to college have to take the SAT

C. students should practice handwriting more often

D. kids don't know how to write in the computer age

【答案】( 1) A

(2) D

(3) B

(4) C

Teachers insist that good handwriting can not only help one's score on the SAT, but also, later on in life, impress potential employers.

Evaluate your writing ; Take your time ; Practice. Practice it a lot

It is bad to have food stuck between your teeth for long periods of time. This is because food attracts germs; germs produce acid, and acid hurts your teeth and gums. Flossing (使用牙线 ) helps to remove the food that gets stuck between your teeth. This explains why flossing helps to keep your mouth healthy, but some doctors say that flossing can also be good for your heart.

It may seem strange that something you do for your teeth can have any effect on your heart. Doctors have come up with a few ideas about how flossing works to keep your heart healthy. One

idea is that the germs that hurt your teeth can leave the mouth and travel into your blood.Germs that get into the blood can then attack your heart. Another idea is based on the fact that when there are

too many germs in your mouth, the body tries to fight against there germs. For some reason, the way the body fights these mouth germs may end up weakening the heart overtime.

Not every doctor agrees about these ideas. Some doctors think that the link between good flossing habits and good heart health is only a coincidence. The incidence (发生率 ) of two or more events is completely random, as they do not admit of any reliable cause and effect relationship between them. For example, every time I wash my car, it rains. This does not mean that when I wash my car, I somehow change the weather. This is only a coincidence. Similarly, some doctors think that people who have bad flossing habits just happen to also have heart problems, and people who have good flossing habits just happen to have healthy hearts.

The theory that flossing your teeth helps to keep your heart healthy might not be true. But

every doctor agrees that flossing is a great way to keep your teeth healthy. So even if flossing

does not help your heart, it is true to help your teeth. This is enough of a reason for everyone to floss their teeth every day.

(1) From the passage, we know that ________.

A. food stuck between your teeth may hurt your teeth

B. all of the doctors agree that flossing is good for your heart

C. doctors' judgment about flossing is based on medical research

D. not every doctor thinks flossing helps to keep your teeth healthy

(2) The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 is to ________.

A. provide an example

B. make a comparison

C. introduce a new topic

D. develop the previous statement (3) Which of the following best states the main idea of the last paragraph?

A. It is a fact that flossing can help your heart as well as your teeth.

B. There is no good reason to believe that flossing will help your heart.

C. Because doctors find flossing won't help your heart, it is useless to floss.

D. Even if flossing is only good for your teeth, you should still do it every day.(4) Which is the best title for the passage?

A. Flossing by Coincidence

C. Flossing Habits and Healthy Hearts B. How to Keep Your Teeth Healthy

D. Why Doctors Disagree About Flossing

【答案】( 1) A

(2) D

(3) D

(4) C

It is bad to have food stuck between your teeth for long periods of time. This is because food attracts germs( 细菌 ), germs produce acid, and acid hurts your teeth and gums.(长时间让食物停留在牙齿是有害处的,这是因为食物能吸引细菌,细

Not every doctor agrees about these ideas

Some doctors think that the link between good flossing habits and good heart health

is only a coincidence. Similarly, some doctors think that people who have bad flossing habits just happen to also have heart problems一些医生认为有剔牙习惯的碰巧有心脏问题,故是发展以前的观点,因此选D 项。

Science is finally beginning to embrace animals who were, for a long time, considered second-class citizens.

As Annie Potts of Canterbury University has noted, chickens distinguish among one hundred chicken faces and recognize familiar individuals even after months of separation. When given problems to solve, they reason: hens trained to pick colored buttons sometimes choose to give

up an immediate food reward for a slightly later (and better) one. Healthy hens may aid friends,

and mourn when those friend die.

Pigs respond meaningful to human symbols. When a research team led by Candace Croney at Penn State University carried wooden blocks marked with X and O symbols around pigs, only the O carriers offered food to the animals. The pigs soon ignored the X carriers in favor of the O's. Then the team switched from real-life objects to T-shirts printed with X or O symbols. Still, the

pigs walked only toward the O-shirted people: they had transferred their knowledge to a two-dimensional format, a not inconsiderable feat of reasoning.

I've been guilty of prejudiced expectations, myself. At the start of my career almost four decades ago, I was firmly convinced that monkeys and apes out-think and out-feel other animals. They're other primates( 灵长目动物 ), after all, animals from our own mammalian( 哺乳动物的 ) class. Fairly soon, I came to see that along with our closest living relatives, whales too are masters of cultural learning, and elephants express profound joy and mourning with their social companions. Long-term studies in the wild on these mammals helped to fuel a viewpoint shift in our society: the public no longer so easily accepts monkeys made to undergo painful procedure

kin laboratories, elephants forced to perform in circuses, and dolphins kept in small tanks at theme parks.

Over time, though, as I began to broaden out even further and explore the inner lives of fish, chickens, pigs, goats, and cows, I started to wonder: Will the new science of "food animals" bring

an ethical ( 伦理的 ) revolution in terms of who we eat? In other words, will our ethics start to

catch up with the development of our science?

Animal activists are already there, of course, committed to not eating these animals. But what about the rest of us? Can paying attention to the thinking and feeling of these animals lead us

to make changes in who we eat?

(1) According to Annie Potts, hens have the ability of_____________.

A. interaction

B. analysis

C. creation

D. abstraction (2) The research into pigs shows that pigs___________.

A. learn letters quickly

B. have a good eyesight

C. can build up a good relationship

D. can apply knowledge to new situations

(3) Paragraph 4 is mainly about________.

A. the similarities between mammals and humans

B. the necessity of long-term studies on mammals

C. a change in people's attitudes towards animals

D. a discovery of how animals express themselves

(4) What might be the best title for the passage?

A. The Inner Lives of Food Animals

B. The Lifestyles of Food Animals

C. Science Reports on Food Animals

D. A Revolution in Food Animals

【答案】(1) B

Watching wooden dolls come to life may not be one of the most popular forms of

entertainment today, but with over twenty years' experience, talented puppeteer

Peter Roberts has earned himself the title“ master puppeteer” because of his great ability to turn puppets into believable, almost living characters.“ People are quite often surprised to hear what I do for living and have little appreciation of puppy as a form of entertainment. But while the exact

origins of puppet theatre are unknown, it has been popular in many cultures and may have been

the very first kind of theatre,” he explains.

Roberts' interest in puppets started when he received some beautiful glove puppets one

Christmas. He started putting on shows with these for family and friends and then moved on to

handmade Chinese string puppets. Learning mostly from books and personal experience,he

explains,“ I was already spending most of my free time carving puppets and putting on shows, so

I hardly noticed the change from students to full-time professional puppeteer.”

The puppets are designed specifically for each show, which is extremely time consuming.

According to Roberts,“ Sometimes what you expect and what you actually create in the end are

two very different things. I've made some of my best puppets 'accidentally'.”

When most people hear the word“ puppetry ” , they more than likely think of a way of keeping

The Hunan Satellite TV(HNTV) show "Where are we going, Dad?" is a big hit. Many famous stars brought their children to a strange village alone, and they had to spend 72 hours with their children there. The program fully showed us a modern version of the "how to be a good father".

As the young parents today are too busy to take care of their children, this new form of "Lost on

the way" played by nanny Daddy and cute kids triggered( 触发 )a lot of people's emotional resonance(共鸣 ). Both the kids and their parents will find that their hearts are being drawn closer. But this kind of feeling has just proved that there is a big spiritual barrier between the modern parents and children.

The TV shows like "Children are hard to support!", "Where are we going, Dad?", "hot mom"

and "cute kids" are becoming more and more popular. All of these show the new parents' confusion in children's education and the appeal for the balance between career and family.

In real life, on the one hand the young parents feel helpless because they are too busy to accompany their children under the pressures of work and life; on the other hand they continue

to do so. The data collected by HNTV shows that nearly two-thirds of their audience are female, among whom 36% are aged from 25 to 34.We can imagine such a scene that one evening a young mother is watching the show with her young children, while her husband is still at work or trapped in socializing, or maybe is just playing computer games in the bedroom. The story of a child without the company of father is still going on. In fact, it is sometimes the same to mothers.

In a modern family, it is often the old who take the responsibility of raising a child. The participation of mother in the children's education is also very low.

It is just this kind of confusion where the parents have gone in the modern family education,

and where the parents will guide their children to go that "Where are we going , Dad?" shows us. If a child wants to grow up healthily and safely into a modern citizen with independent personality and free spirit, it is very important for him or her to follow the parents who serve as

their first teacher. Maybe this is the real reason why such kind of TV programs could get hot. The truth is that children will go where their parents go; and society will go where the children go.

(1) In raising a child in modern society, parents should ________.

(2) Which of the following can be inferred in the passage?

A.Parents shouldn't entirely leave the education of children to the old.

B.36% of the audience of the program are female aged from 25-34.

C.The program shows us the confusion where the parents and children will go to play.

D.In a modern family it is often mothers who are responsible for raising a child.

(3) Which one is the best title of the passage?

A.Confusion Behind“ Where are we going, dad?”

B.Modern Education is Important

C.Nanny Daddy and Cute Kids

D.New problems in Modern Children's Education

(4) What attitude towards modern family education does the author express in the second paragraph?

A.Proud.

C.Optimistic.

D.Indifferent.

The setting was a packed gymnasium just before the start of a game against another school. There were five girls who were members of the Danville High School basketball team —all of them starters. They were not in uniform to play that night and would not be on the team for the

rest of this season. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it

with sincere regret rather than defensiveness.

While the school had been out for the New Year's holiday, the five girls had gone to the party with several of their friends. There was alcohol there. And they all drank some.

Coach Rainville has a zero tolerance rule on drugs and alcohol for her members though it was a hard decision to make. When classes resumed and accounts of holiday parties were shared, rumors about the five girls began closing in on them. The coach said she couldn't back down on her rules. And the players —two junior students and three senior students —agreed. That night in

the gym was part of their public support of the coach's decision.

“ We hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. W hat we did was definitely not worth it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in our community,” one of the senior studentsaid,“ And if you work with us to try to solve this problem, you will help us f eel that we have not been thrown off our basketball team for nothing. The five left the floor to deafening applause.

It could have been any of us, but it happened to be me. I received a brief 18-months of undivided attention and love as the only child, before three more appeared. The second was a severe blow. No doubt, learning the need to share was important, but I had tasted the life of an only child.

Then came years of requests to look after the siblings (兄弟姐妹) , being urged that, You should be setting a better example, “ Again and again the others got awaygwrongwithdoinbut I didn't. We each played our roles; the second one who later skipped school to meet boys; the ever

so attractive third, the boy who could do no wrong; and finally the surprise appearance of the fourth, seemed certain to be spoiled even now. So that left me: the reasonable, quiet one who

got the grades, did the housework and became a chameleon (变色龙)—skilled at reading a situation and being what was needed.

Then eventually came the chance to be the first to leave and experience life on the outside, not defined (定义) as the eldest. The moment I had waited for. But now, many years later, being the eldest matters again. It's down to me; it seems, to take the lead in caring for our parents, AH the time I was made to learn about sharing; however, when it comes to responsibility, it no longer seems to apply. The others are too busy, too far away, or too unconcerned. So dutifully I travel many times across the country for hours to provide care and support. Requests to my siblings to help out more fall on deaf ears. To me, the dutiful first born, it feels like the right and only thing

to do; to be there for our parents as they were for us. Sadly, that feeling isn't shared by the second, third or fourth.

(1) How does the author comment on the four children in the second paragraph?

A. Angrily and Bitterly.

B. Angrily and proudly.

C. Bitterly and humorously.

D. Humorously and proudly.

(2) How did the author develop his social skills?

A. Through hard work.

B. With the parents' help.

C. At the parents' request.

(3) What does the underlined word A. To care for the old.

C. To live outside alone.“it

D. In practice for effectiveness. ”

in the last paragraph refers to? B.

To help the young. D. To travel

nationwide.

(4) What can we learn from the text?

A. The writer hates to be the eldest.

C. The writer is satisfied with his attempt.B. The writer feels proud of his role.

D. The writer is regretful about the siblings.

【答案】(1) C

(2) C

(3) A

(4) D

根据第二段第一句“Then came years of requests to look after the siblings (兄弟姐妹) , being urged that, You should be setting a better example,接下来是”多年来被要

(3)猜。分析 To me, the dutiful first born, it feels like the right and only thing to do;

to be there for our parents as they were for us.

to do; to be there for our parents as they were for us.

故答案A。

Just a few years out of law school, I decided that I wanted to write fictions. The only thing I had ever published before was a law-review article. I had made great efforts to write when I came

home at night after work, but I was too tired. I decided to quit my job.

I began my new life on a February morning. I sat down at my kitchen table at 7:30 am and

made a resolution. Every day I would write until lunchtime. Then I would lie down on the floor

for 20 minutes to rest my mind. After that, I would return to work for a few more hours.

In my first year, I sold two stories. Then I wrote a novel, but I thought it wasn't good enough, so

I ended up putting it in a drawer. My second novel, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, was

published to glowing reviews and received the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction.

My success sounds like a familiar story, but actually it was far from sudden. I quit my job, and for every story I published in those years, I had at least 30 rejections. The novel that I put away

in the drawer took my four years. My breakthrough came in 2006, 18 years after I first sat down

to write at my kitchen table.

Sometimes genius (天才 ) is just the thing that comes out after 20 years of working at your kitchen. Also, doing something truly creative requires the energy of youth. Orson Welles made his

masterpiece, Citizen Kan, at 25. T. S. Eliot wrote The Love Song of J. Afred Prufrock at 23.

(1) When did the author decide to devote himself to writing fictions?

A. When he was tired from his work.

B. Straight after graduation from law school.

C. On being informed his law-review article came out.

D. When his hobby was disturbed by

his work.

(2) We can infer from the second paragraph that the author.

A. led a wealthy life

B. arranged his life reasonably

C. was too diligent to relax himself

D. remained single

(3) What does the author mainly intend to tell us in this passage?

A. Failure is the mother of success.

B. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

C. It is never too old to learn.

D. It is the first step that costs troublesome.

(4) Why did the author give the example of Orson Welles and T. S. Eliot?

A. To make a comparison between them and himself.

B. To show creativity needs energy and

efforts.

C. To persuade the readers of their great talents.

D. To recommend their two masterpieces.

【答案】(1) D

(2) B

I began my new life on a February morning. I sat down at

for a few more hours. 根据第四段中的“ My success sounds like a familiar story, but actually it was far from sudden. I quit my job, and for every story I published in those years, I had at least 30 rejections. The novel that I put away in the drawer took my four years. My breakthrough came in 2006, 18 years after I first sat down to write at my kitchen table.

选 A。

Imagine waking up one day and finding that your beautiful local beach is no more—gone, its fine white sand swept away by an abnormal storm. You go about your daily business for 12 long

years and then suddenly the beach is back, all its glory restored by another storm. This is what happened on the island of Achill, off the coast of Ireland, where people are celebrating the return

of the beautiful Ashleam Bay beach that was taken from them in 2005.

That in itself is unusual enough, but the story gets even better! You see, another beach in Achill did a disappearing act once, but took much longer to return. The beach at Doonagh, located only six miles away from Ashleam Bay, was restored earlier in 2016 after waves created by spring storms had swept away all the sand in 1984, leaving just rock pools behind.

There is local legend that stretches back hundreds of years that says this beach at Ashlcam

Bay returns for a short every seven years then disappears again. But this time around it took a bit longer than that. It was last seen in 2005 and it stayed for a few months at that time before it was washed away again.

As you can imagine, everyone on the island of Achill is thrilled to have their sandy beach back, and even though no one knows how long it's going to be around for, they are making the most of the time they've got before it disappears again.

Some may be quick to believe climate changes cause the phenomenon, but that's not the reason these two beaches in Achill keep disappearing, Dr Kevin Lynch, a geographer at NUT Galway, says that these occurrences are the result of hydrodynamics ( 流体力学 ) and sediment( 沉
