In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch(胸针) in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price－five dollars－was too high for Reuben Earle.Five dollars would buy almost a week's food for his family.

Reuben couldn't ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother,Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home, the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to support their five children but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.

Nevertheless, he opened the shop's weathered (风化的)door and went inside, Standing proud and straight in his flour－sack(面粉袋改做的) shirt and washed－out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, "But I don't have the money right now. Can you please hold it for some time?

"I'll try,"the shopkeeper smiled. "People around here don't usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while." Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out.

He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags(装钉子的麻袋). People built their own buildings in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used nail bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.

That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin.

On July 8，2017，eight members of a family in total，were enjoying an evening together at the beach in Panhandle，Florida．As the sun sank lower on the horizon，the two boys Noah，11，and Stephen，8—swam into the waves without the grown-ups noticing．Soon they realized that the ocean had pulled them into the sea．After trying and failing to swim back，they started waving and screaming for help．But the lifeguards had been off duty for the evening．

The boys had been struggling for several minutes when Jacky and Tabatha，a couple from Georgia，heard them．They dived into the water and soon reached the two brothers．But after a few minutes，they were all trapped in a rip current(离岸流)—a powerful one that could sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea! By then，some teenagers had heard the cry．One of the teens rushed into the water，grabbed Jacky，and pulled him back to shore．Meanwhile，Tabatha could feel herself being pulled

farther out．She was already exhausted and beginning to feel desperate as she was trying to save both boys alone．

Onshore，Jacky was terrified．A man stopped．“What’s wrong?” asked Shaun，who was heading back to his car．“My wife is drowning!” Brittany said．Shaun immediately strode(大步跨)into the water．But several minutes later，a gaping 15 feet still lay between him and Tabatha and the boys．He knew that if he continued，he’d become another victim．He turned around to seek help．

It was about that time that Roberta，the boys’ mother，returned from the bathroom and looked around for her children．She was shocked to spot them floating much farther out than they were allowed to go．She fought the waves to get to her screaming sons and the stranger who was trying to save them，but she quickly discovered it was nearly impossible to make headway in any direction．Looking around，Roberta sighed with relief to see some more people coming to help．

By then，more swimmers had also noticed the group in trouble and rushed to join the human chain．One by one，link by link，total strangers walked into the waves and grasped one another by the wrists，determined that no one would die on that beach．At last，they made it and Tabatha and the two brothers were saved! “Those people on the beach are angels on earth，”said Roberta．“Whether it is the first person or the last person in the chain，they are all our heroes，who helped get our family out of trouble．

At first, Michael Surrell didn't see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors'home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house in Allentown, Pennsylvania, when they got a call from one of his daughters:“The house next door is on fire!”He went to investigate. That's when he saw a woman crying desperately on their porch.

“The baby's in there!”the woman cried. Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, instinctively ran inside.“The baby”was 8-year-old Tiara Roberts, the woman's granddaughter.

Entering the burning house was like“running into a bucket of black paint,”Surrell says. The thick smoke caused him to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous to anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease（慢性阻塞性肺病）,they were life-threatening.

After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath. Surrell knew he couldn't hold his breath for long. Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar layout（布局）to h is, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath.

His throat and lungs burned as if he'd breathed in fire instead of the smoke and soot in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan（呻吟声）emerged. Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl.

The fire worsened Surrell' s pulmonary condition, and he feels the effects even two years later. As a result, he takes extra medication that helps open his airways. “It' s a small price to pay,” he says. “I' d do it again in a heartbeat. Wouldn't give it a second thought.”

John_Blanchard stood up, straightened his army uniform(制服), and studied the crowd making their way through the station. He looked for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he had never seen, the girl with a rose.

His interest in her began thirteen months ago in a library. Taking a book off the shelf, he found himself fascinated, not with the words of the book, but with the notes penciled in the margin (页边的空白). The soft handwriting showed a thoughtful soul and brilliant mind. In the front of the book, he discovered the owner's name,Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he found her address. She lived in New York City. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond (通信). The next day he was shipped overseas for military service.

During the next year and one month, the two begun to know each other by mail. Each letter was a seed falling on both hearts. A romance was budding. Blanchard asked for a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like.

When the day finally came for him to return from Europe, they scheduled their first meeting — 7 pm at the Grand_Central_Station in New York. “You'll recognize me，” she wrote. “By the red_rose I'll wear my dress.” So at 7：00 he was in the station looking for a girl whose heart he loved, but whose face he'd never seen.

A young lady was coming toward him. Her figure was long and slim; her blonde hair lay back from her ears; her eyes were blue as flowers; her lips and chin had a gentle firmness, and in her pale green suit she was like springtime coming alive. He went toward her, entirely forgetting to notice that she was not wearing a rose. As he moved, a middle-aged woman whispered, “Going my way, Sir？”
