SectionDDirections:Read the following passage and complete the sentences or answer the questions according to the information given in the passage you have just read. The traditional tent cities at festivals such as Glastonbury may never be the same again. In a victory of green business that is certain to appeal to environmentally-aware music-lovers, a design student is to receive financial support to produce eco-friendly tens made of cardboard that can be recycled after the bands and the crowds have gone home.Major festivals such as Glastonbury throw away some 10,000 abandoned tents at the end of events each year. For his final year project at the University of the West of England, James Dunlop came up with a material that can be recycled. And to cope with the British summer, the cardboard has been made waterproof.Taking inspiration from a Japanese architect, who has used cardboard to make big buildings including churches, Mr Dunlop used cardboard material for his tents, which he called Myhabs. The design won an award at the annual New Designers Exhibition after Mr Dunlop Graduated from his product design degree and he decided to try to turn it into a business. To raise money for the idea, he toured the City’s private companies which f und new businesses and found a supporter in the finance group Mint. He introduced his idea to four of Mint’s directors and won their support. Mint has committed around £500,000 to MyHab and taken a share of 30 per cent in Mr Dunlop’s business. The first My habs should be tested at festivals this summer, before being marketed fully next year.Mr Dunlop said that the design, which accommodates two people, could have other uses, such as for disaster relief and housing for the London Olympics. For music events, the cardboard houses will be ordered online and put up at the sites by the Myhab team before the festival-goers arrive and removed by the company afterwards, They can be Personalized and the company will offer reductions on the expense if people agree to sell exterior (外部的)advertising space. The biggest festivals attract tens of thousands of participants, with Glastonhury having some150,000 each year. Altogether there are around 100 annual music festivals where people camp in the UK. The events are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious.1.“Eco-friendly tents” in paragraph 1 refer to tents ___________________ . 2.Mr Dunlop established his business by cooperating with _____________ . 3.How many people can stay in a tent designed by Mr. Dunlop? .4.Why did James Dunlop design eco-friendly tents? .Answers:1.favorable to the environmentOr: made of cardboard that can be recycled2.a finance group3.Two people4.To appeal to / arouse music-love rs’ environmental consciousnessSectionDDirections:Read the following passage and complete the sentences or answer the questions according to the information given in the passage you have just read.Americans use the term "college students" to mean students either in colleges or universities. Not only that, Americans almost never say "going off to university" or "when I was in university." That sounds British. Instead, they say "going off to college" and "when I was in college."College, university: what's the difference? We answer that this week in part three of our Foreign Student Series on American higher education.Colleges and universities have many things in common. Both offer undergraduate degrees in the arts and sciences, for example. And both can help prepare young people to earn a living. But many colleges do not offer graduate studies. Another difference is that universities are generally bigger. They offer more programs and do more research.Another place of higher education, especially in technical areas, is an institute, like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Y et even an institute of technology can offer a wide choice of programs and activities. M.I.T. says that seventy-five percent of freshmen come there with a strong interest and involvement in the arts.Modern universities developed from those of Europe in the Middle Ages. The word "university" came from the Latin universitas, describing a group of people organized for a common purpose."College" came from collegium, a Latin word with a similar meaning. In England, colleges were formed to provide students with places to live. Usually each group was studying the same thing. So college came to mean an area of study. The first American universities divided their studies into a number of areas and called each one a college. This is still true.A college can also be a part of a university. For example, Harvard College is the undergraduate part of Harvard University.Programs in higher learning can also be called schools, like a school of engineering or a medical school within a college or university. Y ou know, learning all these terms is an education in itself.Answer the questions with no more than 15 words.1.Two things that a colleage and a university have in common are that ___________________They both offer undergradate degrees and help young people to earn a living2.What are the four places of higher education? The college, university, school and institute.3.What did the word “university” originally mean?A group of people organized for a common purpose.4.What is the main idea of this passage? An introduction to the places of American higher education.(or) what is the difference between a college and a university.SectionDDirections:Read the following passage and complete the sentences or answer the questions according to the information given in the passage you have just read. Many people write to newspapers and magazines to express their opinions. Letters to the editor must carry the writer full name, address and telephone number, although the information is notnecessary for publication. This requirement to provide personal particulars is a clear indication that writers are held responsible for what they say. When a writer wants his voice heard, he needs to claim ownership of his voice. Responsibility is the name of the game.“People today prefer living together to putting their signatures on a marriage certificate because they refuse to accept responsibility for the relationship,” said social worker Ken Yip, “and this is what is causing a lot of family problems.” When we sign a paper, for example, a business contract or a bank document, the signature is symbol of consent, an agreement to take the matter seriously. Most governments and many organizations will not process writer’s complaints if they do not bear the writer’s signature. The absence of a signature, they explain, tells us that the writer cannot be too serious and therefore does not deserve a reply. There are people who wish to remain anonymous(匿名的)for various reasons. Multi-billionaire Mr. King donates generously to charity several times a year. He gives simply because he wants to help but not for the publicity his donations may bring, and he does not w ant his good deeds to make news. In other cases, people insist on anonymity because they are afraid of the consequences of revealing their identity. Crime witnesses may be willing to assist the police, but most are unwilling to give their names when reporting a crime.Name or no name? The answer is very personal and lies in how much we want to get involved. We all have a name, it is a matter if responsibility to it when we make a statement, a claim or an accusation. We all want to honour our own name, and it is only by stamping our expression of an opinion with our own name that we honour what we say.(Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 15 WORDS)1. What does the writer mean by saying “Responsibility is the name of the game”?2. The second paragraph shows that a paper without a signature __________.3. Some people donating generously don’t want their names known because they are__________4. Why is it hard to say that we should name or no name?Key:1. It means names are requ ired to indicate writers’ responsibility for what they say.2. may not deserve a reply3. unwilling to let his good deeds to make news4. The answer is very personal and lies in how much we want to get involved.。

高考英语阅读理解:2010年高考英语阅读理解专项复习题2
高考英语阅读理解:2010年高考英语阅读理解专项复习题2AAn American housewife was pushing her basket with one hand. With the other hand she was holding on to her small child. She arrived at the checkout(付款)counter and thought, \!Now another 20 minutes". But her bill was ready in 20 seconds.Twenty seconds? Yes. A new electronic(电子的)system \!reads" a small stamp of black and white lines on each tin, box or bottle. These little lines give the computer all the information it needs-the kind of product, the price and the tax. The girl at the counter simply moves the groceries(食品杂货)along in front of the" eye" of the machine. And the bill is ready in no time. Most people are very pleased with this new idea. The machines-now in 20 supermarkets in New York, U.S.A.-save a lot of time and money. And they don't make as many mistakes as people. Some shoppers, however, are complaining(抱怨).They can't read the price of the food on a tin and all they can see is little black and white lines. The prices are on the shelves but they want them on each tin. Many people aren't sure that machines are honest shopkeepers! The new machines are very expensive. But everyone, even these worried shoppers, will be happy. In the end, they bring food prices down.1.The American housewife was pushing her basket of shopping with one hand because she_______ .A. had arrived at the checkout counterB. had been waiting for 20 minutes and was tiredC. was holding her child with the other handD. was holding out the other hand for the bill2.What did she think when arriving at the checkout counter?A. Now we are all wearing school uniforms(校服).When we go home, what do we do ?We change into other clothes. If we are going out, we like to wear fashionable clothes .So my first object is this blouse. It looks beautiful, doesn't it? It is my most expensive pieceof clothing, and I love it. It cost over $ 600.You may say that it is too expensive, but luckily I can afford it. The more you spend, the better quality. So, you see, fashion is quite important to me, I admit it.However, I'm not as fond of fashion as my elder brother. Last summer, my parents took us both to London. They wanted to show us some famous sights. But my brother Gary did not appreciate the old buildings. He just wanted to spend all his time in the big shopping arcades(拱廊市场),searching for the coolest pair of trousers! For him, fashion was more important than culture. These are the trousers, he bought. Were they worth the expense of a trip to London to buy these? I don't think so. I think it was a waste of time and money. We must, however, remember that fashion is very big business. Changes in fashion can create or lose jobs .As an example, I have brought this blonde wig(淡黄色的假发)to show you. Do you like it? It belongs to one of my mother's friends. She told me that in the 1960s,it was fashionable for western women to wear wigs. But a few years later fashions changed and women wore wigs much less often. Then the wig factories closed down and hundreds of workers lost their jobs.1.What is the author(作者)doing at the moment? The lower the price is, the better the goods areC. The less money you pay, the better clothes you can getD. The higher the price is, the better the quality is5.What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?A. Wigs were always popular in the past.B. People in the east once like wearing blonde wigs.C. Fashion is actually a business.D. Business often depends on the production of wigs.CEverybody has to buy or sell things sometimes. Even students, who are usually not very rich, have to learn something about making purchases(买东西)intelligently. As a student you may find, for example, that you need to buy a typewriter or winter clothing. You may want to buy a television or a used car. Of course, you want to get good value for your money. If you are considering a major purchase, or any purchase, you should remember two important things.(1)Study first, and then decide what you want to buy. You can learn a lot just by reading books and advertisements.Remember that a high quality product will probably last longer and work better. Of course, for superior product you can expect to pay more. An inferior product may not give you the same quality, but the price should be low. Perhaps this seems obvious, but you must know the quality. Don't just look at theprice. A poor quality product could be expensive. And a valuable one could be on sale at a greatly reduced price.(2)Don't hurry. Take your time. After you decide what product you want, go to many different stores. If you cannot find the product you want, you may try to order it directly from the factory or ask the store to order it for you. Look for a good deal(有利的交易).If you wait, you will probably find that your product will go on sale and you may be able to save 10,20,or even 50 percent of the original price.(3)Finally, before you buy, make sure that the product is guaranteed. If you don't like it, you want to be able to get your money back. If you carefully examine your own preferences and then shop until you find the lowest possible price, you will generally be happy with your purchase and also keep more money in the bank.1.While you go shopping, you should pay more attention to_______ .A. priceB. qualityC. informationD. intelligence2.You can get_______ by reading books and advertisements.A. information about productsB. facts of propertyC. messages of a processD. knowledge of the amount of products3.It is dangerous_______ by its price alone.A. to bring a product into effectB. to argue about a productC. to judge a productD. to deal with a product4.Which of the following statements is not mentioned in the passage?A. If you wait for a sale, you can save 10,20 or even 50 percent off the original price.B.A superior product will probably work better but the pricemay be high.C. Two important things should be remembered when you have some shopping to do.D. You have to pay in advance when you order a product from the store.5.You may buy a television or a used car. Then, during the first period, teachers call in orders on their room phones, and students make deliveries.By closing time at 9:20 a.m., the shop usually sells 90 drinks. “Whoever made the chi tea, Ms. Schatzman says it was good,”Christy McKinley, a second year student, announced recently, after hanging up with the teacher. The shop is called the Dixie PIT, which stands for Power in Transition. Although some of the students are not disabled, many are, and the PIT helps them prepare for life after high school. They learn not only how to run a coffee shop but also how to deal with their affairs. They keep a timecard and receive paychecks, which they keep in check registers.Special-education teachers Kim Chevalier and Sue Casey introduced the Dixie PIT from a similar program at Kennesaw Mountain High School in Georgia. Not that it was easy. They build their homes about 4.6m above the river, an important feature(特征)for the safety of the young. It is called the hoatzin. In appearance, the birds of both sexes look very much alike with brown on theback and cream and red on the underside. The head is small, with a large set of feathers on the top, bright red eyes, and blue skin. Its nearest relatives are the common birds, cuckoos. Its most striking feature, though, is only found in the young.Baby hoatzins have a claw on the leading edge of each wing and another at the end of each wing tip. Using these four claws, together with the beak(喙), they can climb about in the bushes, looking very much like primitive birds must have done. When the young hoatzins have learned to fly, they lose their claws.During the drier months between December and March hoatzins fly about the forest in groups of 20 to 30 birds, but in April, when the rainy season begins, they collect together in smaller living units of two to seven birds for producing purposes.63. For some, an animal provides more comfort than a husband/wife. A 2002 study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress(紧张)levels and blood pressure in people --- half of them pet owners --- while they performed 5 minutes of mental arithmetic (算术)or held a hand in ice water. Subjects completed the tasks alone, with a husband/wife, a close friend or with a pet. People with pets did it best. Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to baseline heart rates. With pets in the room, people also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions. It seems people feel more relaxed(放松)around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be because pets don’t judge.A study reported last fall suggests that having a pet dog not only raises your spirits but may also have an effect on your eating habits. Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying 36 fat people and their equally fat dogs on diet-and-exercise programs; a separate group of 56 people without pets were put on a diet program. On average, people lost about I1 pounds, or 5% of their body weight. Their dogs did even better, losing an average of 12 pounds, more than 15% of their body weight. Dog owners didn’t lose any more weight than those without dogs but, say researchers, got more exercise overall --- mostly with their dogs --- and found it worth doing.67. What does the text mainly discuss?A. What pets bring to their owners.B. How pets help people calm down.C. People’s opinions of keeping pets.D. Pet’s value in medical resea rch.68. We learn from the text that a person with heart disease has a better chance of getting well if.A. he has a pet companionB. he has less stress of workC. he often does mental arithmeticD. he is taken care of by his family69. According to Allen, why did the people do better with pets around when facing stressful tasks?A. They have lower blood pressure.B. They become more patient.C. They are less nervous.D. They are in higher spirits.70. The research mentioned in the last paragraph reports that.A. people with dogs did more exerciseB. dogs lost the same weight as people didC. dogs liked exercise much more than people didD. people without dogs found the program unhelpful.EThere were smiling children all the way. Charily they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Then the first village came into sight, Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave hack. From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time. The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. Whenmy uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug (拥抱). I had never done this before. AWhen I was six, Dad brought home a dog one day, who was called "Brownie", My brothers and I all loved Brownie and did different things with her. One of us would walk her, another would feed her, then there were baths, playing catch and many other games. Brownie, in return, loved each and every one of us. One thing that most touched my heart was that she would go to whoever was sick and just be with them. We always felt better when she was around. One day, as I was getting her food, she chewed up(咬破) one of Dad' shoes, which had to be thrown away in the end. I knew Dad would be mad and I had to let her know what she did was wrong. When I looked at her and said, "Bad girl. " She looked down at the ground and then went and hid. I saw a tear in her eyes.Brownie turned out to be more than just our family pet. She went everywhere with us. People would stop and ask if they could pet her. Of course she'd let anyone pet her. She was just the most lovable dog. There were many dines when we'd be out walking and a small child would come over and pull on her hair. She never barked (吠) or tried to get away. S. that she moved there. Now as a travel writer, she spends one-third of her year on the road. The rest of the time is spent completing her tasks and writing reviews of restaurants at home in Tucson, Arizona. As adventurous as the job sounds, the hard part is fact-checking all the information. New year by heading for the ski resorts (滑雪场). Never mind that Beijing's dry weather seldom produces snow. It is cold enough in winter for snow-making machines to make a covering for the hills north to the capital. And the rapid growth of a pleasure-seeking middle class has formed the basis for this new craze(热潮).Since Beijing's first ski resort was opened ten years ago, the sport has enjoyed astonishing increase. There are now more than a dozen resorts. Clothes markets in the city have added bright colored ski suits to their winter collections. Mr Wei, a manager of a newly-opened ski resort in Beijing, sees the growth of an industry that could soon lead Chinese to head for the ski resorts of Europe, In recent years ski resorts offering natural snow have opened in China. But many are in faraway areas of the country and can't really match the equipment and services of some ski resorts in Europe.Beijing's skiing craze is partly a result of the recent increase in private (私有的) cars. This has led to the growth of a leisure industry in the capital's suburbs (郊区), which until the late-1990s were unreachable to ordinary people, according to Mr Wei, about 40% of the visitors to his resort come in their own cars. The rest are bused in by schools, businesses or government Offices. The problem is making money. Starting ski resorts requires quite a lot of money; hiring land from the local government, preparing the hills, buying snow machines, making sure there are enough water and electricity to run them, and buying ski equipment for hiring out to customers. The ski resort where Mr Wei works cost nearly $4m to set up. And. as so often in China when someone comes up with a good idea, many others hash in and price wars break out. Beijing now offers some of the cheapest ski training classes in the world, though with most people rather new to the sport, expecting a few more doing the same job.50.What does this text mainly talk about?A.Convenience for skiers brought about by private cars.B.Skiing as a new way of enjoying one's spare time.C.Things to be considered when starting a ski resort.D.A sudden increase of ski training classes in Beijing.51.Why are some Chinese likely to go skiing in Europe?A.To visit more ski areas.B.To ski on natural snow.C.For a large collection of ski suits.D.For better services and equipment.52.The underlined words "leisure industry" in Paragraph 3 refer to ________.A.transport to ski resortsB.production of family carsC.business of providing spare time enjoymentsD.part-time work for people living in the suburbs53.What is the main problem in running a ski resort?A.Difficulty in hiring land.ck of business experience.C.Price wars with other ski resorts,D.Shortage of water and electricity DCoolest Hotels in the WorldAriau Aragon TowersThe Ariau Amazon Towers hotel lets you sleep in a tree house. All we assume (推测) is that some early men invented certain sounds, in one way or another, to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could talk with each other. Later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be put together to show those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, are called words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations—the things they bring up to our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we tire, the more certain words bring back to us the happy and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which have powerful effects on our minds and feelings. This clever use of words is what we call literary style (文体). Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can express his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears, Weshould therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them correctly, or they will make our speech silly and common.58.We learn from the text that language might have begun with________.A.expressionsB.actionsC.signsD.sounds59.What is mainly discussed in Paragraph 2?A.The learning of new words.B.The importance of old wordsC.The relation of human experience with words.D.The gradual change and development of words.60.In the last paragraph, what does the author suggest that we should do?e words skillfully.B.Make musical speechesC.Learn poems by heart.D.Associate with listeners.第二节根据对话内容,从对话后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

2010年高考英语阅读理解专项测试题Everyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get older, but men's minds decline more than women's, according to the results of a worldwide survey. Certain differences seem to be inherent in male and female brains: Men are better at maintaining and dealing with mental images (useful in mathematical reasoning and spatial skills), while women tend to excel (擅长) at recalling information from their brain's files (helpful with language skills and remembering the locations of objects). Many studies have looked for a connection between sex and the amount of mental decline (衰退) people experience as they age, but the results have been mixed. Some studies found more age-related decline in men than in women, while others saw the opposite or even no relationship at all between sex and mental decline. Those results could be improper because the studies involved older people, and women live longer than men: The men tested are the survivors, "so they're the ones that may not have shown such cognitive decline," said study team leader Elizabeth of the University of Warwick in England. People surveyed completed four tasks that tested sex-related cognitive skills: matching an object to its rotated form, matching lines shown from the same angle, typing as many words in a particular category (范畴) as possible in the given time, e.g. "object usually colored gray", and recalling the location of objects in a line drawing. The first two were tasks at which men usually excel; the latter are typically dominated by women. Within each age group studied, men and women performed better in their separate categories on average. And though performance declined with age for both genders, women showed obviously less decline than men overall.1. 2 It seems that politicians around the world are thinking about the health of their countries. While in China, Chen Zhu has announced his plans for a universal health service and reform across health services. Gordon Brown, the UK Prime Minister, has also announced he is planning to make some changes in our health service. The crux of Mr. Brown's proposals are related to giving the NHS (National Health Service) a greater focus on prevention, rather than just curingpatients. He is planning to introduce increased screening for common diseases such as heart disease, strokes, and cancer, for example, breast cancer. In Britain there are 200,000 deaths a year from heart attacks and strokes, many of which might have been avoided if the condition had been known about. Initially, the diagnostic (诊断的) tests will be available for those who are vulnerable, or most likely to have the disease. One example is a plan to offer all men over 65 an ultrasound test to check for problems with the main artery (动脉), a condition which kills 3,000 men a year. The opposition have criticized Mr. Brown's proposals, saying that they are just a trick, and claiming that there is no proper timetable for the changes. They also say that Mr. Brown is reducing the money available for the treatment of certain conditions while putting more money towards testing for them. The NHS was founded in 1948, and is paid for by taxation. The idea is that the rich pay more towards the health service than the poor. However in recent years there has been a great increase in the use of private healthcare, because it’s much quicker. NHS waiting lists for operations can be very long, so many people who can afford it choose to pay for medical care themselves. (297 words) 1.
