Music can change brainwave patterns, deepen breathing, and bring on a totally stressfree and more open mindset (心态). Using music to relax when considering a particular problem may not only raise your mood, but also could help you reach that “aha” moment and find a solution.Music has also been shown not only to make you feel good, but also, to be a great motivator. For example, during exercise, listening to music can keep you going, or get you to exercise more by helping you to ignore negative feelings of tiredness and focus on the pleasurable feelings you get from being absorbed in the music.Music is mainly used to record emotion. When we listen to a piece of music, we share the artist's feelings on a visceral (本来的) level. That can be sad, and who among us hasn't put on a painful love song to share in the misery after a bad breakup? On the contrary, we can share in the delight of songs of joy and happiness, or any song or piece of music that reminds us of a particular happy time in our past.So next time you are feeling down, put on Beethoven's Ode to Joy, I bet you will feel a lot better about whatever it was that was bothering you!1.We can infer from the first paragraph that music can ______.A.benefit you in many waysB.promote you to find more questionsC.change the patterns of your lifestyleD.influence your attention to a problem2.The author wrote the second paragraph mainly to ________.A.tell us a story B.make some commentsC.give us an example D.list some facts3.What's the best title of the text?A.What music means to a music loverB.Why people love happy musicC.What kind of music is popularD.How music changes your lifeBMy violin is like a soul mate that whispers words of wisdom to me. Together,we've gone through both tears and happiness.About 12 years ago, I made acquaintance with it following an order from my mom. Many hours of boredom were spent practicing it. And to make things worse, the disappointment in my teacher's eyes as I played the wrong notes was like an invisible (隐形的) hammer, striking on my heart. One day, I finally decided. I hate it!By chance, things changed when I was seven. I was at home lying on the sofa, wondering how those famous violinists dealt with this terrible dilemma. I searched online for the Eminor Concerto, a wellknown violin work by German composer Felix Mendelssohn, and listened to it.A beautiful and mysterious sound came from the violin as the bow moved across it. It was like the music slid over the flowers, rose up, and started to fill the air. The violin's voice woke up the sun, made the trees green, and freshened the air. As the music changed, the sky turned back to gray. A gloomy shade covered the grass as all the sunshine disappeared. I could hear children crying and men shouting. It was like an invisible claw had grabbed my heart tightly, making it unable to beat. That glorious day set off my passion and interest in violin — I grabbed mine and never let it go. Before the memories faded, I stared at my instrument. Without hesitating, I picked it up, rosined (用松香擦) the bow, and began to play. Peace filled my heart. My violin has been by my side for 12 years. When I feel happy, an energetic tune makes it even better; when I'm deep in sorrow, a peaceful tune washes it away, when I'm walking on air, feeling especially pleased with my achievements, solemn (庄严的) tunes calm me down. Gradually, it has become a part of my life.My violin, shall I compare you to a summer's day?4.What further contributed to the author's dislike of violinplaying?A.Orders from mum.B.Boredom of practice.C.Loss of passion for violin.D.Disappointment in the teacher's eyes.5.What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?A.The scenery outside the room was quite attractive.B.The weather actually changed because of the tune.C.The sudden change made the author's heart unable to beat.D.The author's feeling was continuously influenced by the music.6.Why did the author pick up the violin again?A.The invisible hammer and claw are gone.B.The beautiful imagination changed his attitude.C.A famous tune aroused his interest and passion.D.He was crazy about Felix Mendelssohn's works.7.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.Deep love for musicB.Musical soul mate — violinC.An inspiring story of violinD.My dislike and like of violinⅢ.阅读七选五Imagine that you're an actor or actress performing in a play for the first time. S. Lewis in an essay named Three Waysof Writing for Children. Those who say that children must not be frightened mean two things. Firstly, they mean that we mustn't do anything likely to give children fears, and secondly, they want to keep out of their minds that they are born into a world of death, violence (暴力), wounds, good and evil (邪恶). C. S. Lewis says he agrees with the first reason, but not the second. He goes on to comment, “Since it is so likely that they will meet cruel(残酷的)enemies, let them at least hear of brave fighters and heroic courage. By limiting your child to perfect and nice stories of child life in which nothing alarming ever happens, they would fail to face fears and hardships.”“It would be nice,”he continues, “if no little boy in bed ever hears a frightening sound. But if he is to be frightened, I think St. George, or any bright champion in armor, is a better comfort than the idea of the police.”Bruno Bettelheim, a well-known child psychologist, also points out that fantasy stories provide children with a valuable education about good and evil. He believes that all children have many personal fantasies filled with fears and fantasy stories comfort them and offer solutions. Happy endings tell them that solutions and hope are real and model the kind of happy life children want to find.A good fantasy suggests rather than teaches possible answers to life. It's believed that reading fantasies quickens the ability to get and put ideas from books to reality. It's what good literature does-it makes life larger.1.According to the first paragraph, C.S. Lewis thinks that________.A.children shouldn't read any fantasy story because it is badB. adults shouldn't do things that may frighten their childrenC. death and badness should be kept out of children's mindsD. writing a fantasy story is the best way of writing for children2.What probably is St. George according to the text?A.He is a policeman in real life.B.He is a murderer caught by the police.C.He is a brave man in a fantasy novel.D.He is a frightening person in a story.3.Why should children read fantasy literature according to Bruno Bettelheim?A.Because it encourages children to have a lot of fantasies.B.Because it helps children overcome fears and find solutions.C.Because it teaches children to write their own fantasy stories.D.Because it gives children a happy memory when they grow up.4.It can be inferred from the text that ________.A.good literature can give readers more valuable storiesB.fantasies can improve one's ability to solve problemsC.personal fantasies can help children get away from dangerD.most children can understand what fantasy literature is5.Which of the following features of fantasy literature does the author want to stress?A.It's necessary and helpful.B.It's interesting and attractive.C.It's useless but enjoyable.D.It's frightening but exciting.BBerlin-Germany's University of Heidelberg says a researcher has given evidence that apparently confirms(证实)the identity of the woman behind the Mona Lisa's famous smile. She is Lisa del Giocondo, wife of Florentine businessman Francesco del Giocondo, according to notes written in the margins of a book by a friend of Leonardo da Vinci as the artist worked on the masterpiece, the school said in a statement. The discovery by a Heidelberg University library manuscript(手稿)expert Armin Schlechter appears to confirm what has long been suspected. It is also an answer that has been in plain(清楚地)view for centuries: the Mona Lisa is known as Lisa del Giocondo in Italian.Lisa del Giocondo was first named as the woman in the painting by Italian writer Giorgio Vasari in 1550, who also dated the work at between 1503 and 1506, the university said. But because Vasari relied on anecdotal(轶事的)evidence, there was always doubts about the identification, and Leonardo is not known to have made any notes about the model's identity himself.Mixing the mystery, unclear references in 1517, 1525 and 1540 point to other identifications.“One possibility discussed is the presentation of an imaginative likeness of a woman, Leonardo's female ideal,” the school said. But the find by Heidelberg library expert Armin Schlechter settles the matter, according to the university. In a copy of the works of Roman philosopher Cicero, Agostino Vespucci, a Florentine official and friend of Leonardo's, wrote in the margins that da Vinci was working on a portrait of Lisa del Giocondo. He dated his notes October 1503,also helping fix the exact time Leonardo was working on the painting.“All doubts as to the identity of the Mona Lisa are eliminated(清除)by one source,” the university said. The discovery was actually made in 2005, but was not widely known until a German radio station last week aired it in a report.6.Leonardo da Vinci was working on the masterpiece in________.A.1503B.1506C.1525 D.15507.What can apparently confirm the identity of the Mona Lisa?A.Armin Schlechter's manuscript.B.Giorgio Vasari's anecdotal evidence.C.Agostino Vespucci's notes.D.The notes by Leonardo da Vinci.8.Why was Giorgio Vasari's view doubted?A.Because he didn't fix the exact time.B.Because Leonardo made no note about the model.C.Because his find was based on anecdotal evidence.D.Because the answer has been in plain view for centuries.9.The discovery was finally made public by________.A.a German radio stationB.Germany's University of HeidelbergC.the German governmentD.Heidelberg library expert10.What is mainly discussed in the text?A.Leonardo da Vinci and his wife.B.Scientific studies on the Mona Lisa.C.Who is the woman in the Mona Lisa.D.When Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa.Ⅳ.翻译句子1.昨天你本该去帮助他。

I seek friends whose qualities illuminate (照亮) me and train me up for love. It is for these people that I reserve the glowing hours, too good not to share. When I was in the eighth grade, I had a frien d. We were shy and “too serious” about our studies when it was being fashionable with our classmates to learnacceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would e to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us wou ld say, “Let's start with a train whistle today.” We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changing into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped. When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend. He was in despair and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We_gave_London_to_each_other.For almost four years I have had a remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, some times in a funny way, in the other's dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind. In my most int eresting moments, I often think, “Yes, I must tell...” We have never met.It is such forting panions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of psychologist, who will only fill up the healing silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.1.In the eighth grade, what the author did before developing proper social behavior was to________.A.bee serious about her studyB.go to her friend's house regularlyC.learn from her classmates at schoolD.share poems and stories with her friend2.In Paragraph 3, “We gave London to each other” probably means ________.A.our exploration of London was a memorable gift to both of usB.we were unwilling to tear ourselves away from LondonC.our unpleasant feelings about London disappearedD.we parted with each other in London3.According to Paragraph 4, the author and her friend________.A.call each other regularlyB.have similar personalitiesC.enjoy writing to each otherD.dream of meeting each other.4.In the darkest moments, the author would prefer to________.A.seek professional helpB.be left aloneC.stay with her best friendD.break the silence5.What is the best title for the passage?A.Unforgettable ExperiencesB.Remarkable ImaginationC.Lifelong FriendshipD.Noble panionsBAmericans are famous for being friendly to people. Their friendships, however, tend to be shorter and more casual than friendships among people from other cultures. It is not unmon for Americans to have only one close friend during their lifetime, and consider other “friends” to be just social acquaintances (泛泛之交). This attitude probably has something to do with American mobility and the fact that Americans dislike to be dependen t on other people. They tend to “partmentalize”(划分) friendships, having “friends at work” “friends on the softball team” “family friends” and so forth.Because the United States is a highly active society, full of movement and change, people always seem to be on the go. In this highly_charged atmosphere, Americans sometimes seem abrupt(无礼的) or impatient. They want to get to know you as quickly as possible and then move on to something else. Sometimes, they ask you questions that you may feel very personal. No insult is intended; the questionsusually grow out of their true interest or curiosity, and their impatience to get to the heart of the matter. And the same goes for you. If you don't understand certain American behavior or you want to know more about them, do not hesitate to ask them questions about themselves. Americans are usually eager to explain all about their country or anything “American” in which you may be interested. They explain so much in fact that you may bee tired of listening. It doesn't matter because Americans tend to be unfortable with silence during a conversation. They would rather talk about the weather or the latest sports scores, for instance, than deal with silence. On the other hand, don't expect Americans to be knowledgeable about international geography or world affairs, unless those subjects directly involve the United States. Because the United States is geographically distant from many other nations, some Americans tend not to be aware of what goes on in other parts of the world.6.According to the passage, Americans' attitude towards friendship is________.A.it is unusual to have only one close friendB.more informal than that in other countriesC.to regard all friends as only social acquaintancesD.to divide friends into several grades7.The words “highly charged” (Paragraph 2) most probably mean________.A.extremely expensiveB.much cheerfulC.highly responsibleD.full of mobility and change8.What can we learn from the passage?A.Americans know a lot about international affairs.B.Friendships among Americans tend to be more formal.C.Americans always seem to be on the move.D.Americans like to cooperate with other people.9.It can be inferred from the passage that________.A.Americans want to take part in all kinds of activitiesB.curiosity is the major characteristic of AmericansC.Americans do not know how to deal with silenceD.Americans' characters are influenced by their social and geographical environmentsⅣ.翻译句子1.没有朋友们的帮助我就不会按时完成任务了。

An employee walks into the lift with his boss and apart from a mumbled(咕噜的)“good morning”,the junior is lost for words. That's an opportunity missed, say experts, who believe that such an obviously dull 30-second conversation can be invaluable for those who want to climb the career (职业) ladder. “Small talk canhelp set up a relationship upon which you can build,”says Dusseldorf communications advisor Torsten Knobble. As a matter of fact, the importance of small talk goes far beyond the relationship to one's boss. People who fail the art of speaking a lot without actually saying anything find it harder to cultivate relationships in the workplace, believes Ulrich Goldschmidt, director of the senior management association VDF in Essen.“Small talk is a necessary part of networking,”he says. Actually every conversation begins and ends with small talk, according to Wolf Lasko, who has written a book on the topic and its bearing on career futures. Not everyone is good at small talk. It takes skill to pick the right moment and the right topic with which to start a conversation. There are plenty of topics although some are not suitable for informal chat. Safe topics include holidays, the movies, music or sports. Besides, body language is part of small talk; it's not a good idea to stand around with arms folded.Small talk is a question of closeness and distance. For a few employees, it's never a bad idea to hold back at the beginning and familiarize themselves with the company culture first.【解题导语】本文主要介绍了闲聊在职业中的必要性和重要性。

However, sometimes you should be careful of your topics. There are certain “safe” topics that people usually discuss. The weather is probably the number one thing that people who do not know eachother well discuss. Sometimes even friends and family members discuss the weather when they meet or start a conversation.Another topic that is generally safe is current events. As long as you are not discussing a controversial_issue,_such as a recent law concerning equal rights, it is usually safe to discuss that. Entertainment and sports news is another good topic. If there is something that you and the other person have in common, that may also be acceptable to talk about. For example, if the bus is extremely full and there are no seats available, you might talk about the reasons why. Similarly, people in an office might casually discuss the new paint or furniture. There are also some subjects that are not considered acceptable when making small talk.Discussing personal information such as salaries or a recent divorce is unacceptable between people who do not know each other well. Compliments on clothing or hair are acceptable; however, you should never say something (good or bad) about a person's body.Negative comments about another person not involved in the conversation are also not acceptable. When you do not know a person well, you cannot be sure who their friends are. You do not talk about private issues either, because you do not know if you can trust the other person with your secrets or personal information. Lastly, it is not wise to continue talking about an issue that the other person does not seem comfortable with or interested in.1.What does the passage mainly tell us?A.Why do people make small talk?B.What topics do people choose when making small talk?C.What is small talk?D.In which situations do people make small talk?2.Which of the following is NOT the best topic when you make small talk?A.Beautiful day, isn't it?B.Did you watch the news today?C.Have you got a boyfriend?D.What do you think of the new computers?3.The underlined part “controversial issue” in the fourth paragraph mostprobably means________.A.debatable question B.acceptable questionC.private question D.interesting question4.Which of the following belongs to small talk that most probably takes place at a bus stop?A.The buses are very slow these days, aren't they?B.Excuse me, which bus should I take to get to the park?C.It looks as if it will rain. I should have taken my umbrella.D.Can you lend me some money for a ticket?5.How is the text organized?A.①②③④/⑤⑥⑦B.①②③④/⑤/⑥⑦C.①/②/③④/⑤⑥⑦D.①/②③④/⑤⑥⑦B(2013·重庆高考)It is widely known that any English conversation begins with The Weather. Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr. Johnson's famous comment that “When two English meet, their first talk is of weather.” Though Johnson's observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, most commentators fail to come up with a convincing explanation for this English weather-speak.Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that “To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it.” Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. Bryson is wrong, he says, because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena. “The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty.” According to him, the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it attracts the English as well as the outsider.Bryson and Paxman stand for common misconceptions about the weather-speak among the English. Both commentators, somehow, are missing the point. The Englishweather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weather-speak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overcome the natural reserve and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weather-speak are not requests for weather data. Rather, they are routine greetings, conversation starters or the blank “fillers”. In other words, English weatherspeak is a means of social bonding.6.The author mentions Dr. Johnson's comment to show that________.A.most commentators agree with Dr. JohnsonB.Dr. Johnson is famous for his weather observationC.the comment was accurate two hundred years agoD.English conversations usually start with the weather7.What does the underlined word “obsession” most probably refer to?A.A social trend.B.An emotional state.C.A historical concept.D.An unknown phenomenon.8.According to the passage,Jeremy Paxman believes that________.A.Bill Bryson has little knowledge of the weatherB.there is nothing special about the English weatherC.the English weather attracts people to the British IslesD.English people talk about the weather for its uncertainty9.What is the author's main purpose of writing the passage?A.To explain what English weather-speak is about.B.To analyse misconceptions about the English weather.C.To find fault with both Bill Bryson and Jeremy Paxman.D.To convince people that the English weather is changeable.Ⅳ.翻译句子1.玛丽病得很厉害,因此她住院了。
