最近这段期间,我收到的最普遍的问题如下:“我家孩子正在读高三。
他很聪明,但是去读哈佛和耶鲁估计够呛(起码我觉得他英语还不够好)。
其实,我本来准备让他在中国读大学,不过现在看起来他的高考成绩可能会和第一志愿有一定的差距。
所以我现在在考虑让他到美国读书。
但是他们说申请美国大学之前还要考托福和SAT!而且好像大部分美国名牌大学的申请都已经截止了。
我该怎么办??!”听起来耳熟的话,请继续看下去。

我自己数了一下大概有7个。
但是我不知道哪一个对您的孩子来说最合适,这个只能由您自己根据具体的情况来做判断。
方案一:先入读中国大学,并在一到两年后转入美国院校这种方案可能是大多数家长的首选方案。
即使在国内就读的大学并不是很好,但家长们考虑到选择这种方法孩子毕竟有地方可去,而且离家近、价格又不贵。
虽然家长们都希望孩子能在高考中取得好成绩,但他们更希望确保自己的孩子在秋季开学时有学可上,而不是赋闲在家。
这个计划的一大弱点就是它假设了在国内上一两年转入美国知名大学是个顺理成章的过程。
不幸的是,事实根本没有这么简单。
美国大学每年招收的大一新生比转学生数量多的多。
换句话说,作为大一新生提交申请被录取的概率要比转学生申请获通过的概率大的多。
导致这个现象的原因有很多。
个人认为主要原因就是美国大学,像其他类型的机构一样,需要在财政上保持平衡。
所以,他们每年都需要一定数量的学生来付给他们学费。
而这些学生需要“从一开始”就支付各种费用。
当然,有时候学生们会因为某种原因中途离开这个学校。
这个时候,学校才需要想办法把他们离开所带来的财政空白给“填上”。
方法就是录取一些转学生。
从这个角度看,我想您应该明白为什么说转学生申请比大一新生申请难得多了吧。
我不喜欢这个方案的另一个原因就是它还假设了学生本身很容易就接受转学。
我不这么觉得。
在您的孩子要转学的时候,他已经在原来的学校度过了很长一段时间,也结交了很多好朋友。
离开这些朋友到另一个地方生活不是一个简单的事情。
另外,很多美国大学在大一大二时都给学生设置了必修的预备课程。
但您的孩子在国内读大一大二时却不一定会修读这些课程,也就是说他在原本学校大一大二的一些学分不会获得承认。
当他来到了美国大学开始大三课程时,他就必须补修该校大一大二的必选课。
导致的结果就是您的孩子很有可能无法在四年内完成本科课程。
最后一点,和离开老朋友一样困难的就是结交新的朋友。
与您孩子同班的学生这时候都已经互相认识了两年,也有了固定的交际圈。
所以您的孩子就只能是最后一个被邀请参加聚会的人,如果他足够幸运的话。
相信您已经明白了我的立场,我不会向任何人推荐这个方案方案二:参加从中国起步的所谓“桥梁课程”或者“1+3”、“2+2”项目“桥梁课程”与我提到的第一种方案有相似之处。
您的孩子进入到某所中国大学就读一到两年,然后转至某所美国大学进行余下两年或者三年的本科学习。
然而,两种方案之间存在两个重要的区别。
首先,如果您的孩子参与“桥梁课程”,那么他无需参加国内的高等入学考试,只需要支付学费即可入学!而且通常情况下拥有“桥梁课程”项目的学校均是中国的知名高校,例如中国人民大学!因此您也可以自豪地说您的孩子在人大上学!其次,如果您的孩子在国内就读期间表现良好的话也会确保转入参与该项目的美国知名大学。
这个确保转学是整个项目的关键所在。
单个“桥梁课程”所涉及的美国大学可以少至6所,也能多达上百所;有的很知名,有的则相对知名度不高;不同项目之间的参与学校也各不相同。
“桥梁课程”的中国部分通常是中英双语教学。
这对于提高您孩子的英文水平有很大的帮助,为到美国学习打基础。
这类项目的课程中还会讲解美国的文化、参与项目的大学所做的学校入门课程等。
当然,您需要为上述的“好处”付出代价。
首先是花销。
同样一所大学“桥梁课程”项目的学费要比常规大学课程学费高出不少。
其次,“桥梁项目”与常规大学同名的课程,上课的老师并不相同。
最后,您一定要认真查看参与该“桥梁课程”的大学有哪些,以及您的孩子要做到“多好”才能确保在国内完成学业后能转入美国的优秀高校。
我听说过一些关于“桥梁课程”很吓人的事情,因为有的项目是非正规的,所以在选择时您一定要认真权衡。
如果您对这个方案感兴趣,请做一些深入的考察。
由于很多家长都在考虑这些“桥梁课程”项目,Zinch中国已经着手对此进行更加深入的研究。
目前我们所了解的这类项目多达400个!很遗憾,我无法在现阶段提供在这些项目之间进行比较的考量方法,而且我还听到过一些关于这类项目很负面的消息。
方案三:重点研究提供“有条件录取”的美国大学“有条件录取”确保您的孩子可以在4年制的本科大学就读,但前提条件是必须成功通过由该学校组织的英语预科课程。
通常,英语预科课程至少会持续6个月,甚至一年来完成。
现在大多数的语言预科课程已不再设置固定的结课或完成时间,只要在语言考试中达到某一分数要求,即可从“英语预科课程”转入“常规大学课程”。
这种方式拥有几个明显的优势:第一,您的孩子确保可以转入4年制大学,您无需担心转校的问题;第二,您的孩子是在“美国”接受语言预科课程,跟纯正的英语语言老师学习。
在这种环境下,您的孩子每天都必须使用英文与人交流,英语水平将突飞猛进。
与之相对的,如果您的孩子是在中国接受语言课程,并在1或2年后转入美国大学,通常孩子的英语不会像在美国接受语言课程的那些孩子那样好。
第三,许多知名大学都提供有条件录取以及高质量的英语教学,您的孩子将能接受到高水准的教育。
但是,这种方式与本报告中另外几种留美方式相比,费用相对较高。
当您的孩子在美国上语言预科课程时,您所需支付的学费与正常4年制大学每年的学费在价格上基本相同。
这就意味着,与其他无需参加预科课程仅支付4年学费的学生相比,您需要为您的孩子支付5年的学费。
当然,很多美国教育学家会说那是因为美国的教育质量和课程综合来讲要比中国的好。
说的可能对,但费用确实高!查看提供“有条件录取”的美国大学名单,点击这里方案四:认真考虑美国社区大学很多中国家长对于让自己的孩子就读美国社区大学的提议,都予以拒绝,认为社区大学不是一个好选择。
我认为这是一个错误的判断。
其实选择美国的社区学院对大部分中国学生来说都是非常合适的留学方案。
我们之前已经为美国的社区大学单独写过一份报告,所以在这里就只为您提供这份报告的摘要。
您的孩子首先需要在社区大学完成两年的学业,然后转入4年制大学完成剩余的2年课程;根据所选社区大学的不同,转入4年制大学的承诺可能受到美国法律保护,即使您的转学目标是像加利福尼亚大学系统或是纽约州立大学系统这样的美国顶尖院校。
入读社区学院的花费相对较少:通常情况下,在社区大学就读两年是在正规4年制大学就读两年所需花费的一半;因而,美国社区大学在过去的30年间,风靡台湾、香港和新加坡。
正如我所说,关于美国社区大学还有很多需要详细解释的地方,这也是为什么我们会为社区学院单独写一份报告。
查看社区大学名单,点击这里方案五:考虑申请截止“较晚”或者采用“滚动招生”的美国大学这是一个很好的方案,但是中国大部分学生家长对此的理解不够透彻。
您想必知道大部分有名的美国学校都有一个申请截止日期。
这个日期主要集中在高中最后一年的十二月底。
换句话说,如果你的孩子打算2012年7月高中毕业后去美国读本科,那么大部分美国名校申请的截止日期就是在2011年的12月。
在此之前你的孩子需要参加一系列的标准化考试像托福和SAT, 准备好推荐信和高中的成绩单。
另外还要写一堆的申请文书。
大部分打算2012年毕业后去美国读本科的中国高中生都会选择从09年的暑假开始做准备。
不过,申请截止日期设在来年三月或者四月的美国大学也不在少数。
说得更清楚点(一直强调日期可能会让您疑惑),就是如果你的孩子2012年7月高中毕业后去美国读本科,那么他最晚可以在2012年7月申请这些学校。
查看更多申请截止日期较晚及采用滚动招生的美国大学,点击这里补充一点,很多上面提到的申请截止日期较晚或采取滚动录取的学校对考试成绩的要求都是“选择性提交”。
这意味着申请者不需要提供SAT(但大部分都需要提交某种英语能力水平测试成绩,比如托福)。
这也算是个很好的消息,因为如果您错过了传统的申请截止日期,基本意味着您的孩子也没有能够及时参加标准化考试。
为什么美国高校会把申请截止日期定得这么晚呢?很简单,他们的教室还没坐满,希望录取更多的学生,特别是中国学生。
这些学校在中国都不算特别出名(起码现在是这样),但是它们在美国都是很出名的学校。
其中有一些可能教学质量相对较差,但大多数都是没有问题的。
这些出色的学校,加上较晚的申请截止日期(以及灵活的标准化考试成绩要求)对一些申请者非常适合,包括您的孩子。
所有上面说到的,你还需要注意的是你的孩子还是必须要有足够好的英语能力才能进入上面所说的那些学校的项目。
尽管每个项目对它的要求可能不尽相同,一般来说他们希望申请者的托福成绩在80分以上。
这也是我为什么把一个选择放在我表单里第五位的原因——因为你孩子的英语已经非常不错了所以这是非常适合他的一条路。
方案六:关注设置“春季入学”政策的美国大学从申请入学时间这个概念来说,美国大学不仅提供上述的“较晚录取”和“滚动招生”,还有很多学校采用“春季入学”的政策。
这意味着,您的孩子既可以选择在当年的9月进入大学就读,也可以选择在来年1月或者2月入读。
还用之前的例子来举例,如果您的孩子是2012年的6月高中毕业,那么他进入美国大学的时间可以不是2012年9月,而是2013年的1月。
这样一来,入学时间较晚,申请的截止日期也相对顺延。
这样您的孩子就有更多时间准备标准化考试,同时提高自己的英文水平。
我知道这种方法听上去很简单,但是我必须承认本人对这种方案兴趣不大。
原因很简单,因为美国大学的系统设置主要考虑的是让新生在秋季入学,入学后学生开始参与各种迎新活动、结交新的朋友、适应新环境。
这是正统的美国大学新生模式。
