Did Mrs Whipple love He?
Can you imagine the life of a retarded child born in a poor family?Nowadays especially our generation there is only one child in most families and of course this child would be a prince or princess and enjoys most love of the family. So many of us can't understand a retarded child in a poor family which has 3 children.
In He written by Katherine Anne Porter, we see such a child. He looked like stout and obedient but actually He was weak and could not express himself exactly, even when he was very cold or hungry,he would not ask for clothes or food.
Always the mother of He,Mrs Whipple, said that she loved her second son better than she loved the other two children put together. But from the article we could not find much love she showed for He.Although she would always say she loved Him before other neighbour. In fact, she often cared little for He.The author did not depict much of Mr Whipple's psychological activities, but there were many examples how Mrs Whipple treated He and from these examples we can get a knowledge whether Mrs Whipple loved He or not.
Firstly, every time anybody set foot in the house, she always had to talk about Him first before she could get on to anything else to show her care and love for Him.Then after it seemed to ease her mind.Maybe she knew very well that what might these people gossip about her second son,but she could not confront the fact.So every time she would spoke food of He and tried her best to make He look normal.Besides, when she did these things she felt a warm pool spread in her breast and the tears would fill her eyes.Through these things and word she thought she protected her son and her family's fame.
"He did grow and He neer got hurt."Yes,it's true He never got hurt because no noe cared Him very much so when He got hurt no one knew. That's why He never got hurt."He never seemed to know it","He never seemed to mind the cold."The author used "seemed" to indicate that He knew everything but just could not point out or did not want to mind.In my opinion,He is really tolerant.
Secondly, once Mrs. Whipple's brother visited her family,Mrs Whipple insisted on butchering a sucking pig to prepare a decent meal ignored her husband's warning of that the pig would be worth money by Christmas.Because she thought it was a shame and a pity they couldn't have a decent meal when her own family came to see them.I think Mrs Whipple usually lived in a life imagined by herself which was not in line with the reality.Meanwhile, she was very vain. Then she let He to get the little pig away from his ma,a great fighter, worse than a Jersey cow.It was a dangerous job,why didn't she do it herself or ask other children do it if she loved Him than others. To be frank,He was scared very much. But it was her mother's recommend,so He set up his courage to snatch the pig.
Thirdly, despite the fact that Mrs Whipple knew many awful stories about how bulls followed on quietly enough, and then suddenly pitched on with a bellow and pawed and gored a body to pieces, she set Him to lead the bull. How do you think her love to Him?I don't think she loved Him very much.
But we could not take one aspect for consideration when we judge something of some people. In my opinion, every mothers loves her sons.So what on earth cause Mrs Whipple's behaviour? In my esteem, poverty played an important role in her psychology and characteristics.Because of poverty some people would look down upon her and her family,so she always pretended that her family was not so bad and could afford things other family could. In that case, she became vain, conceited.so she could not stand that neighbours said
something bad about He or she cared little about Him even did not love Him.Everything what she did was to protect herself or her family from losing face.So we could see little love she showed to He.
Last but not least,I want to pay attention to His departure from His home.At that time, He sniveled and made a gulping noise. This situation surprised Mrs Whipple and us.He was scrubbing away big tears that rolled out of corners of His eyes.At that moment,Mrs Whipple felt so sorry as if He was accusing her of something. But I think she was wrong. He just did not want to leave them.Although His life was not very well,He still wanted to stay with His family, father and mother and so on.
In a word,Mrs Whipple loved He.But she could not afford much love to Him,so she just tried her best to love Him.
