Check the local news station for the latest traffic report. Or go online and check traffic cameras before you set out. If there is a jam, you'll be prepared and can try another route.Take the road less traveled. Although highways may be the most direct route, back(偏僻的) roads can be much less crowded, which can save you from the frustration of the stop-and-go traffic.Rush hour isn't just a lovely nickname. It means the morning and afternoon traffic lasts for several hours, but they're still called “rush hour” for a reason—everyone's on the road and in a hurry to get somewhere. Treat rush hour like bad weather—if you don't have to go anywhere, stay off the roads.Tips for those unavoidable traffic jams:Don't break the law. You've gone 30 feet in 30 minutes and all of a sudden you see people using the shoulders(紧急停车道).Don't behave like them. Not only is this illegal, but also there's a good chance they'll get caught or cause even more problems.Pay extra attention to zig-zaggers (Z字形行进者).When some people are anxious, they may start changing lanes(车道) every 5 seconds or cut you off. Keep checking your windows and mirrors for these lane changers.Look for an escape. If it is possible to exit the road safely, do it. Use a GPS unit, and you can change your route mid-trip if needed.Be courteous.Good manners could help you avoid a possible accident. Allow people in from a lane that is ending. Speeding up to keep them out increases your chances of an accident.【解题导语】本文主要介绍了避免交通堵塞的方法:收听广播或上网收集最新的交通信息;错开高峰期。

answer is the bicycle,or“bike”.In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day.In New York city, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work, there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines. For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bike riders. For example, they want the city to draw special lanes—for bicycles only—on some of the main streets, because when bike riders must use the same lanes as cars, there may be accidents.Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes. But no bicycle lanes have been drawn yet.Not everyone thinks it is a good idea.Taxi drivers say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike. The city government has not yet decided what to do.It wants to keep everyone happy.Only on weekends,Central Park—the largest open place in New York—is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But Bike for a Better City says that is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown.1.The idea of special bicycle lanes is most preferred by________.A.the city governmentB.some bike ridersC.people living far from downtownD.some store owners2.Why have no bicycle lanes been drawn yet?A.The main streets are not wide enough.B.The city government is too busy to do it.C.Some people don't think it is a good idea.D.Most people live too far to travel by bike.3.Central Park is closed to cars and the roads may be used by bicycles only ________.A.on Saturdays and SundaysB.in the afternoonsC.in holidaysD.on weekdays4.Bike for a Better City is a(n)________.A.party B.companyC.organization D.personⅤ.翻译句子1.站在那边,你就能够很好地看到这幅油画了。

For about three and a quarter centuries, under its rule, China enjoyed a period of economic growth with great and amazing artistic achievements. One of the most important factors in the Song Renaissance was the printing press(印刷机) which made for a rebirth of classical Confucian(儒学的) learning. By the 10th century, printers had produced a large number of copies of the classical Confucian texts. With this increase in the production of books, education spread and became widely available.Printing also had its greatest influence on the Chinese political system. In the Song Dynasty, government examinations became the most important way to gain political power in China. For almost1,000 years, China was governed by men who had done very well in examinations. Thousands of students studied for the exams, and thousands of inexpensive books were required. Without printing, such a system would not have been possible. The Song period was also the golden age of Chinese painting. Emperor Huizong was a talented painter who encouraged the arts. A royal painting school was created and many fine artists were supported. The period is best known for nature subjects and landscape paintings. Guo Xi used perspective (透视法) in his paintings and The Quiet Valley is one of his best-known works. One of the greatest landscape painters of the period was Fan Kuan. His famous work, Travelling among Mountains and Streams, is one of the most famous Chinese paintings. Completed around the year 1000, it was inspired by the power of nature and the relative insignificance of humans.1.When was the Chinese Renaissance?A.Immediately after the Renaissance in Europe.B.During the Song Dynasty.C.At the time of Confucius.D.In the year 1000.2.What contributed to spreading the ideas of Confucius?A.The spread of education to all people.B.People's new interest in classical texts.C.The development of painting.D.The printing press and a wide availability of books.3.How did people become politicians at the time?A.By studying Confucian ideas.B.By reading many printed books.C.By learning painting.D.By taking government examinations.4.Which of the following is the painter of Travelling among Mountains and Streams according to the passage?A.Guo Xi.B.Emperor Huizong.C.Fan Kuan.D.Confucius.

As China's economy grows at a fever pitch1, and more and more people are moving into the major cities and industrial centers, traffic congestion becomes the order of the day. Traffic congestion not only creates headaches for commuters, but also reduces productivity by taking away valuable time from work. This sickness that plagues2 our cities must be at least put under control, if not cured. Some people insist that more roads be built to accommodate the increase in traffic, while others think that enlarging the capacity of public transit systems (buses, subway, trains) is the answer. Building more roads would mean a lot of land will be taken—not a very good prospect for economic, agricultural, and environmental reasons. On the other hand, forcing everyone to take public transit will bring inconvenience to those whose use of their cars is essential to their work. Putting more buses on the road may have the opposite effect as big buses tend to clog3 up narrow streets. Building an extensive subway system can be the ideal answer, but that is very expensive. Clearly, we cannot go for one single solution.A compromise4must be struck between the different solutions. My personal view is that for cities that have plenty of unused land, more roads should be built. Having special lanes reserved for bicycles and motorcycles should encourage more people to use bicycles and motorcycles instead of cars. As a long-term solution, extensive subway, or surface monorail5 systems should be built for all the major cities. 【知识点击】1.pitch n.程度2.plague v.折磨;使苦恼3.clog v.阻塞;堵塞promise n.妥协,和解;折中5.monorail n.单轨铁路【自主探究】1.What's the best title for this passage? The bridge, which has attracted international attention, is now a local landmark. The Nutty Narrows Bridge was built in 1963 by a local builder, Amos Peters, to give squirrels a way to cross the busy road without getting flattened by passing cars. The original bridge was built over Olympia Way on the west edge of the library grounds. Before the bridge was built, squirrels had to avoid traffic to and from the Park Plaza office building where office staff put out a nutty feast for the squirrels. Many times, Peters and others who worked in and near Park Plaza witnessed squirrels being run over. One day Peters found a dead squirrel with a nut still in its mouth, and that day's coffee break discussion turned into squirrel safety. The group of businessmen cooked up the squirrel bridge idea and formed a committee to ask the blessing of the City Council(市政会). The Council approved, and Councilwoman Bess LaRiviere jokingly named the bridge “Nutty Narrows. ”After architects designed the bridge, Amos Peters and Bill Hutch started construction. They built the 60-foot bridge from aluminum and lengths of fire hose (消防水带). It cost $1,000.It didn't take long before reports of squirrels using the bridge started. Squirrels were even seen guiding their young and teaching_them_the_ropes. The story was picked up by the media, and Nutty Narrows became known in newspapers all over the world. In 1983, after 20 years of use, Peters took down the worn-out bridge. Repairs were made and crosspieces were replaced. The faded sign was repainted and in July 1983, hundreds of animal lovers attended the completion ceremony of the new bridge.Peters died in 1984, and a ten-foot wooden squirrel sculpture was placed near the bridge in memory of its builder and his devotion to the project.16. If you work for a dog-walking business, you may earn less;if you are on your own dealing with several dogs at the same time, it may be more. What do you have to do to be a dog walker?First, have a real love of dogs, and have a good knowledge of how to get on with dogs. Try calling dog-walking services to find out about openings. If you're on your own, you'll need to network and market yourself. You might advertise your services in pet offices, grooming businesses, or neighborhood papers. You will need business cards and a mobile phone, and have good references and a clean background. You'll also have to deal with taxes and insurance. You should be physically fit, friendly, neatly dressed and extremely dependable. Many dog walkers are bonded(被担保的)and insured, and this is a definite selling point to clients.Of course, you will be cleaning up dog waste! You will also be outside in all kinds of weather. You may have to deal with dogs that don't like each other, and difficult owners. It's also an up-and-down kind of business—clients can come and go.For pet lovers, spending the workday with dogs instead of navigating office politics is its own reward! You are your own boss—you can dress casually,_your doggy clients will love you unconditionally, and you'll get some great exercise!20. This is true in most cases, for example on a doorbell. But some buttons are actually fake, like the “close” button on a lift. Many people are in the habit of pressing the “close” button because they don't have the patience to wait for the lift doors to shut. But lifts' “close” buttons are a complete trick, at least in the US—the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you press. It started in the 1990s when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US, making sure that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter. Only US firefighters and repairmen can use the buttons to speed up the door-closing process if they have a code or special keys. But to normal lift riders, the buttons aren't completely useless. According to psychologists, fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control.“A sense of control is very important. It reduces stress and increases well-being,”said Ellen J. Langer, a psychology professor at Harvard University. Experts also added that a lot of buttons that don't do anything exist in our lives for this same purpose. For example, pedestrian crosswalk buttons don't live up to their names either. Pressing them used to help make the traffic signals change faster, but that was before computer controlled traffic signals were introduced. But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little “white lies”, they still continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be worth the effort.21. What was the author's purpose in writing the text?A.To analyse the functions of fake buttons.B.To describe different kinds of fake buttons.C.To explore different habits of pushing buttons.D.To explain the disadvantages of fake buttons.22. What can we learn about the “close” buttons on a lift in America?A.They work when people press them hard.B.They were designed for a sense of control.C.They never speed up the door-closing process.D.They take the safety of the disabled into account.23.What can we infer about pedestrian crosswalk buttons?A.They can make people feel better.B.They help computers work faster.C.They can control the traffic signals.D.They help pedestrians cross safely.24.Which may be the best title for the passage?A.Buttons in the USAB.Buttons always lieC.Buttons may not workD.“Close” buttons on liftsⅥ.阅读七选五根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Everyone complains about being stuck in traffic, but, like the weather, no one seems to do anything about it. In particular, traffic engineers, transportationplanners, and public officials responsible for transportation systems in large cities are frequently criticized for failing to solve the traffic jam.But is the traffic jam a sign of failure? Long queues at restaurants or theater box offices are seen as signs of success. Should transportation systems be viewed any differently? I think we should recognize that the traffic jam is an unpreventable by-product(副产品) of successful cities, and view the "traffic problem" in a different light.Cities exist because they improve social communication and economic trade. The traffic jam occurs where there are lots of people but limited space. Culturally and economically successful cities have the worst traffic problems, while decaying cities don't have much traffic. New York and Los Angeles are America's most crowded cities. But if you want access to major brokerage houses(经纪行), you will find them easier to reach in crowded New York than in any other large cities. And if your company needs access to post-production film editors or satellite-guidance engineers, you will reach them more quickly through the crowded freeways of LA than through less crowded roads elsewhere.Despite the traffic jam, a larger amount of social communication and economic trade can be made better in large, crowded cities than elsewhere. Seen in this light, the traffic jam is an unfortunate result of prosperity(繁荣), not a cause of the economic fall and urban decay. So while we can consider the traffic jam as increasing cost in the areas of big cities, the cost of inaccessibility in uncrowded places is almost certainly greater. There is no doubt that the traffic jam brings the terrible economic and environmental damage in places like Bangkok, Jakarta, and Lagos. But mobility(流动性) is far higher and traffic jam levels are far lower here in the US, even in our most crowded cities. That's why, for now, we don't see people and capital streaming out of San Francisco and Chicago, heading for cities like El Centro and McAllen.1. We can conclude from the first paragraph that _____.A. the traffic jam and weather are the two factors preventing the development of big citiesB. the traffic jam seems to be very difficult to deal withC. if traffic engineers try their best, the traffic jam can be solvedD. public officials are always criticized for misusing their power2. By saying "decaying" (in Para. 3), the author probably means _____.A. less powerful and influentialB. developingC. rich and successfulD. small-sized3. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. The traffic jam has caused terrible effects in cities such as Bangkok and Lagos.B. The traffic jam in San Francisco has resulted in the capital flowing out.C. The traffic jam level in Jakarta is lower than that in the US.D. McAllen is as crowded and successful as San Francisco.4. What's the author's opinion on the traffic jam?A. In cities, the traffic jam is avoidable.B. The traffic jam is both a sign of failure and a sign of success.C. The traffic jam is the result of successful cities.D. The traffic jam can promote social communication and economic trade.答案以及解析一、填空1.答案:won't reach解析:考査时态。

scientists are breeding (育种) a new generation of rice plants that will be able to grow in soil containing salt water.Their work may enable abandoned farms to become productive farms once more.Tim Flowers and Tony Yeo,from Sussex University’s School of Biological Sciences, have spent several years researching how crops, such as rice, could be made to grow in water that has become salty. The pairs have recently begun a threeyear programme, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council,to establish which genes enable some plants to survive salty conditions. The aim is to breed this capability into crops, starting with rice.It is estimated that each year more than 10 million hectares of agricultural land are lost because salt gets into the soil and stop plants’ growth. The problem is caused by several factors. In the tropics, mangroves that create swamps (沼泽) and traditionally formed barriers to sea water have been cut down.In the Mediterranean,a series of droughts have caused the water table to drop, allowing sea water to flow slowly in.In Latin America, irrigation often causes problems when water is evaporated (蒸发) by the heat, leaving salt deposits behind.Too much salt then enters the plants and prevents them functioning normally.Heavy concentrations of minerals in the plants stop them drawing up the water they need to survive. To overcome these problems,Flowers and Yeo decided to breed rice plants that take in very little salt and store what they do absorb in cells that do not affect the plants’ growth. They have started to breed these characteristics into a new rice crop, but it will take about eight harvests before the resulting seeds are ready to be considered for commercial use.Once the characteristics for surviving salty soil are known,Flowers and Yeo will try to breed the genes into all manners of crops and nd that has been abandoned to nature will then be able to bloom again, providing much needed food for the poorer countries of the world.1.Which of the following statements about Flowers and Yeo is true?A.They are husband and wife.B.They are students at Sussex University.C.They are farmers from the Mediterranean.D.They are colleagues at an institution.2.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a cause of the problem discussed in the passage?A.Natural barriers to sea water have been
