A (2019·长沙市模拟)On average,Americans spend about 10 hours a day in front of a computer or other electronic devices(设备) and less than 30 minutes a day outdoors. That is a claim made by David Strayer,a professor of psychology at the University of Utah.In his 2017 TED Talk,Strayer explained that all this time spent with technology is makingour brains tired. Using an electronic device to answer emails, listen to the news and look at social media puts a lot of pressure on the front of the brain, which,Strayer explains,is important for critical(有判断力的) thinking, problemsolving and decisionmaking. So,it is important to give the brain a rest. And being in nature,Strayer claims, helps get a tired brain away from too much technology.More than 15,000 campers from around the world attended an international camping festival in September. That is when friends and family take time off and escape to nature for several days. They take walks, climb, explore, swim, sleep, eat and play.Camping may be just what atired brain needs. Take Carl for example. He lives in West Virginia and enjoys camping. He says that staying outdoors makes him feel at ease.It also prepares him for the work he must do.Kate Somers is another example who also lives in West Virginia. She says she enjoysacamping with her husband and two children. She calls it“experience.”regenerativeAt the University of Utah,David Strayer has studied both shortterm and longterm exposure to nature. He found that spending short amounts of time in nature without technology does calm the brain and helps it to remember better. However,he found,it is the longterm contact with nature that does the most good.He and his research team found that spending three days in nature without any technology is enough time for the brain to fully relax and reset itself.【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。

AA Book Review—The Snake-Stone by Berlie DohertyThe setting: Urban England(the cities), but also rural England(the countryside) including remote English villages. The theme: The main theme is a teenage search of self-discovery, in this case the search for a mother from whom the hero was separated at an early age. Its other concerns are love, getting on with others, being persistent and courageous and trying to deal with doubts, troubles and worries. As the book moves to a close, James’ swimming coach says to him: “You are not like a kid obeying instructions any more. You are diving like a young man who knows where he is going.”The characters: James is the hero of the story. He is a championship diver, and has a comfortable life with his foster parents(养父母). Yet he also has the qualities to take him on a long journey to find his birth mother. The other characters in The Snake-Stone, James’ parents, his diving instructor, best friend, the villagers, people he meets on his journey, are pictured realistically. The turning point:The turning point in the story comes while James’ foster parents are away in London, and he wonders about the identity of his birth mother. The only clue he has is a fossil, “the snake stone” which she left behind along with a note on which she had written: “Take good care of Sammie.” It was written on a torn envelope with parts of an address still there. The journey: Instead of going to London, James decides to find his birth mother. With help from his geography teacher, James sets out for the remote country village where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and happy travels. The mother he finally meets, Anne, has a minor yet powerful voice in the novel. He come s to understand why she left him at a stranger’s door fifteen years before. Although the meeting is not long, it leaves him with a feeling of completeness. As a journey of self-discovery, The Snake-Stone also provides its readers with a happy ending. Its hero says, on returning to his foster parents, “I was home.”21. What is the main theme of the novel?A. Life with foster parents.B. Life in the world of diving.C. A journey of self-discovery.D. A travel around the country.22. What do the coach’s words in Paragraph 2 suggest?A. James is a successful diver.B. James is an independent young man.C. James is an outgoing young man.D. James is a hopeful swimmer.23. The snake stone in the novel is .A. a stone with an address on itB. a fossil left by the foster parentsC. a gift from the swimming coachD. a clue left by the birth motherBThe great-grandmother is learning English with the help of her family when she is at the age of 91. She hopes to use the language at nex t year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo. Takami zawa was one of the more than 200,00 people who requested to volunteer for Tokyo’s 2020 Games. English is not required for service, but it is a useful skill for volunteers to have. But Takamizawa had not been able to learn the language when she was young. Takamizawa said that she was in high school when World War Two started. She said, “In my second year there, English was banned because it was the enemy language.”Takamizawa said her grandchildren helped persuade her that she was not too old to learn. “When I talked to my grandchildren about my wish, they said, ‘It’s not too late. We will teach you one word a day’”. Natsuko is Takamizawa’s granddaughter and main English teacher. Natsuko sends a new English word to her grandmother’s phone every day. They also often work together directly on phrases that Takamizawa will need for the Olympics. “Welcome to Tokyo, this is the Olympic stadium, how can I help you?” Takamizawa answers when asked to say an English phrase she has learned. Natsuko explains that she wanted to give her grandmother something to enjoy. “I can clearly see her English is getting better. It’s my joy now.”The EF English Proficiency Index is a measure of the level of English spoken in a country. Japan ranks 49th among countries where English is not the first language. This situation is slowly changing asyounger generations welcome English. However, Takamizawa believes real change will not happen unless Japanese people become more open to the rest of the world. With around 500 days to go until the games begin, the whole Takamizawa family is ready to welcome the world to Tokyo.24. Why couldn’t Takamizawa learn English when she was young?A. It is never too late to learn.C. The early bird catches the worm.D. Two heads are better than one.COne of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school?Listen—Listen when they are talking. Don’t say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it’s not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings.Help them—If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don’t do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra pencil or pen with you to classes in case they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need.Be there for them—Be there for your friends to help make them feel better in hard times. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control, but if you can’t stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don’t want to stay with your friends when they’re in hard times, then you don’t deserve to be with them when they’re having a good time!Make plans—Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you’ll remember these things when you’re all old!28. While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should .A. give him or her some adviceB. calm him or her downC. just listen unless askedD. share your feelings as well29. What is probably the best title for the test?A. How to find a good friend.B. How to be a good friend.C. How to help friends in trouble.D. How to make more friends.DEarlier this year a series of papers in The Lancet reported that 85 percent of the $265 billion spent each year on medical research is wasted because too often absolutely nothing happens after initial results of a study are published. No follow-up investigations to replicate(复制) or expand on a discovery. No one uses the findings to build new technologies. The problem is not just what happens after publication—scientists often have trouble choosing the right questions and properly designing studies to answer them. Too many studies test too few subjects to arrive at firm conclusions. Researchers publish reports on hundreds of treatments for diseases that work in animal models but not in humans. Drug companies find themselves unable to reproduce promising drug targets published by the best academic institutions. The growing recognition that something has gone wrong in the laboratory has led to calls for, as one might guess, more research on research—attempts to find rules to ensure that peer-reviewed studies are, in fact, valid. It will take a concerted effort by scientists and other stakeholders to fix this problem. We can do so by exploring ways to make scientific investigation more reliable and efficient. These may include collaborative team science, study registration, stronger study designs and statistical tools, and better peer review, along with making scientific data widely available so that others can replicate experiments, therefore building trust in the conclusions of those studies.Reproducing other scientists’ analyses or replicating their results ha s too often in the past been looked down on with a kind of “me-too” derision(嘲笑) that would waste resources—but often they may help avoid false leads that would have been even more wasteful. Perhaps the biggest obstacle to replication is the inaccessibility of data and results necessary to rerun the analyses that went into the original experiments. Searching for such information can be extremely difficult. Investigators die, move and change jobs; computers crash; online links malfunction. Data are sometimes lost—even, as one researcher claimed when confronted about spurious(伪造的) results, eaten by termites(白蚁).There has definitely been some recent progress. An increasing number of journals, including Nature and Science, have adopted measures such as checklists for study design and reporting while improving statistical review and encouraging access to data. Several funding agencies, meanwhile, have asked that researchers outline their plans for sharing data before they can receive a government grant. But it will take much more to achieve a lasting culture change. Investigators should be rewarded for performing good science rather than just getting statistically significant (“positive”) but nonreplicable results. Revising the present incentive(激励) structure may require changes on the part of journals, funders, universities and other research institutions.32. What is the problem reported in those papers in The Lancet?A. Great achievements in medical research failed to get published.B. Money was wasted on follow-up investigations in medical research.C. Too many new research findings are not put into use after publication.D. Few scientists are devoted to building new technologies for mankind.33. Which of the following situation is most similar to the problem described in paragraph 2?A. A high school decides to cut its art programs due to the lack of fund.B. A patient gets sicker because he does not follow the doctor’s advice.C. A marketing firm tests a website with participants that are not target population.D. A drug company fails to produce the new drug due to no access to the latest data.34. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?A. Measures are taken to ensure publication of tested results only.B. Scientific experiments must be replicable to be considered valid.C. Experiment replication is unoriginal and not worthwhile.D. Rewards should be given only to those nonreplicable findings.35. The purpose of this article is to ___________.A. argue that scientific research lacks efficiencyB. explain the result of a recent scientific studyC. introduce some recent progress in medical researchD. highlight the possible problems of research studies第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

21.(6分)Learning New Vocabulary during Deep SleepSleeping time is sometimes considered unproductive time. This raises the question whether the time spent asleep could be used more productively, e.g. for learning a new language? Up-to-now sleep research focused on the stabilization and strengthening of memories that had been formed during wakefulness. However, learning during sleep has rarely been examined. There is enough evidence for wake-learned information undergoing a revision by replay in the sleeping brain. The replay during sleep strengthens the still weak memory and leaves the newly acquired information in the pre-existing store of knowledge. If re-play during sleep improves the storage of wake-learned information, then first-play, i.e. the initial processing of new information, should also be possible during sleep. The research group of Katharina Henke examined whether a sleeping person is able to form new semantic(语义的)associations between played foreign words and translation words during the brain cells’ active states, the so-called “Up-states.” It turned out to be that what they thought was reasonable. When we reach deep sleep stages, our brain cells progressively coordinate their activity. During deep sleep, the brain cells are commonly active for a brief period of time before they jointly enter into a state of brief inactivity. The active state is called “Up-s tate” and the inactive state “Down-state”. The two states alternate(交替)about every half-second.New evidence for sleep-learning challenges current theories of sleep and theories of memory. The concept of sleep that we are separated from the physical enviro nment is no longer reasonable. "It’s false that complex learning be impossible during deep sleep," says Simon Ruch, co-first-author. "In how far and with what consequences deep sleep can be applied for the acquisition of new information will be a topic of research in upcoming years," says Katharina Henke. The research group of Katharina Henke is part of the Interfaculty Research Cooperation (IRC). Thirteen research groups in medicine, biology and psychology are part of the IRC.The aim of these research groups is to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms(原理)involved in sleep and consciousness.1、Which of the followings haven’t sleep researchers achieved so far?A.People can learn vocabulary during deep sleep.B.Memories can be stable and strong during sleep.C.Wake-learned information can appear in the sleeping brain.D.Re-play during sleep improves the storage of wake-learned information.2、What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?A.“Up-state” and “Down-stat e” appear in turn during deep sleep.B.“Up-states” is another name for the brain cells’ active states.C.Semantic associations are important for language learning.D.The brain cells’ active states are central for sleep-learning.3、What will researchers do within several years according to the passage?A.Make study in the following fields such as medicine and biology.B.Separate us from the physical environment.C.Apply deep sleep for information learning.D.Discover the concept of sleep.4、What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To introduce a new way of vocabulary learning.B.To gain a better understanding of the mechanisms.C.To challenge current theories of sleep and theories of memory.D.To explain the possibility of vocabulary learning during deep sleep.22.(8分) A company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women’s shoes.Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy’s, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company’s co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women’s feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe’s outer part, called the sole (鞋底). This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.Rothy’s shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 2 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We’re not going to run out of water bottles any time soon. So we have a limitless supply of material, and I thin k that is a good sign for our future.” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled materials to make other products. For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shipping in the near future.1、How are used plastic bottles usually dealt with?A.They are buried or burned.B.They are used to make shoes.C.They are changed into soft materials.D.They arc returned to factories for reuse.2、What does the underlined word knitted in the third paragraph mean?A.Attached. For decades, kids have found humor and comfort in Charlie Brown and his pet dog, Snoopy. The characters came from the pen of Charles M. Schulz, whose comic strip, Peanuts, first appeared in newspapers in 1950.Schulz, who died in 2000, was one of the most influential cartoonists in history. His son, Craig Schulz, has reinvented the Peanuts characters for a new generation of kids who may only be familiar with the holiday specials on TV. Craig co-wrote the screenplay for The peanuts Movie with his own son, Bryan.Director Steve Martino created the computer-animated 3D characters for the movie. Even though he used new technology, he wanted to stay true to Charles Sc hulz’s original drawings. “I love to draw, I love to tell stories, and I got to do it in a big movie like this,” Martino said. “My hope was to bring these characters to life in a bigger way than we’ve ever seen, but be truthful to who they’ve always been.”11-year-old Noah Schnapp voices the character of Charlie Brown. “It was a bit difficult at the beginning,” Noah said. “But once I got into it, I had so much fun.” Alex Garfin, 12, is the voice of Linus, Charlie’s friend. Alex has words of wisdom not just for Charlie, but also for kids who want to work on the entertainment industry. “If you don’t succeed, try again,” he said. “You may not succeed 99 percent of the time, but that 1 percent probability will bring you something.” Francesca Capaldi, 11, who voi ces the Little Red-Haired Girl, agrees.“Dream big,” she said. “If you really want something, just go for it.”1、What can we know about The Peanuts Movie?A.It is more popular than the comic strip PeanutsB.it was changed into TV specials by Craig Schulzz.C.It has more characters than the comic strip PeanutsD.Charles Schulz’s son and grandson wrote the screenplay.2、Steve Martino thinks it is important to _________.A.bring the main characters to life.B.make the movie fit for today’s kids.C.develop the movie using new technology.D.keep the characters what they’ve been like3、How many characters of the movie are mentioned in the text?A.3B.4C.5D.64、What can be the best title for the text?A.A computer-animated movie brings Peanuts to lifeB.The Peanuts Movie helps you realize your dream.C.Charles Schulz and his comic strip Peanuts.D.The Schulzs give you humor and comfort.24.(8分)Rock Junket is The Original Rock n Roll Walking Tour of New York City. However, scientist Gary Lovett says the white balls which provide protection for the bugs are created by a tiny insect. It’s hard to believe the tiny bug could kill a tree. However, trees can end up with millions and millions of the pests. When there are that many, it ends up killing the tree. The bug from East Asia is slowly killing trees across the USA.The trouble-making bug is just one of many invasive(入侵的) pests that have slipped into the United States. They can hurt other living things in their new home. Many invasive pests arrive on wooden pallets piled inside shipping containers. They support and separate goods, and keep them from sliding around. Invasive pests often tunnel into the pallets. How can we stop pests from riding on pallets? Lovett says new rules are needed. The companies that make pallets don’t want more rules. Congress has added an amendment(修正案) in the 2018 Farm Bill to try and prevent this problem. However, Lovett is not hopeful it will make much of a difference. Pallets are checked by inspectors. Many are sprayed with bug-killing pesticide. “I believe in the system,” said Brent McClendon, president of The National Wooden Pallet and Container Association. He also said shipping containers are checked very carefully.Still, each year 13 million containers are shipped to the U.S. Each is full of wooden pallets. Lovett says: “Inspectors can’t possibly check everything. All it takes are a few bad pallets; we should get rid of woodenpallets.” He believes pallets should be made of plastic or eco-composite wood. Eco-composite wood is a mix of wood fiber and plastic. Insects cannot hide into it. One problem is that these choices cost more. They may be worth the extra money, though. Invasive pests cost the U.S. $5 billion a year. Trees don’t just die in forests. They also die in cities and our yards. Then, they need to be replaced. That costs money, too.1、All the statements are TRUE except that ________.A.pesticide has been applied to bug-killingB.invasive pests are native to Wappinger CreekC.invasive pests hide in pallets used in shippingD.the companies making pallets don’t want more r ules2、What can we infer from the passage?A.Bugs can be easily spotted by eyes.B.Bugs ruin the shipping goods slowly.C.Bugs won’t bother the tree if just in few numbers.D.Bugs cover trees with white soft balls for protection.3、Why does Gary Lovett want to get rid of wooden pallets?A.Because insects mostly die in them.B.Because plastic pallets are eco-friendly.C.Because they are not worth extra money.D.Because they are the major pest carriers.4、What does the passage mainly talk about?A.Invasive pests are harming plants in the USA.B.Effective measures have stopped the pest invasion.C.Congress contributes a lot to dealing with invasive pests.D.Ecosystem in the USA is poorly damaged by invasive woods.
