The researchers think that the “panic” response is due to the fact that moisture creates the number one way for diseases to spread in vegetation.Biochemist Harvey Millar from the University of Western Australia explained: “When a raindrop splashes across a leaf, tiny droplets of water go in all directions. These droplets can contain bacteria, or viruses. A single droplet can spread these up to 10 meters to surrounding plants.” The longer a leaf is wet, the greater the chance that a disease can take hold.So this is why the researchers think plants react to rain like humans would react to someone sneezing on them. They conducted an experiment in which they mimicked rain with a spray bottle and noticed rapidmicroscopic reactions from the plants that are invisible to the human eye. After the first 10 minutes of artificial raining, over 700 genes in the plants were said to respond in a panic-like manner and most of them continued to do so for around 15 minutes. In this time chemical reactions like how the plant creates proteins and its hormone balance were affected.A single touch of water activated an immediate response from plants. The reactions created warning signals that travelled from leaf to leaf and resulted in the plant producing a range of protective measures. Plants that were repeatedly watered eventually suffered from stunted growth and delayed flowering.Interestingly, the plants were also found to be communicating their “fears” with nearby vegetation. They did this by producing airborne chemicals that can be picked up by other plants and inform them what’s going on and how they’re coping. Millar said: “If a plant’s neighbors have their defence systems turned on, they are less likely to spread disease, so i t’s in their best interest for plants to spread the warning to nearby plants.”4.Paragraph 2 mainly talks about ________.A.how droplets spread bacteria or virusesB.why plants get into a “panic” when it rainsC.how tiny drops of water go in all directionsD.that longer leaves can take hold of more diseases5.The underlined word “mimicked” is closest to ________ in meaning.A.poured B.fetchedC.contained D.imitated6.Why does the author mention the experiment in Paragraph 3?A.To question the ideas mentioned above.B.To introduce a new topic for discussion.C.To offer additional topic-related information.D.To compare it with previous experiments.7.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Plants respond to water slowly.B.Plants shut their defence systems when it rains.C.Plants only communicate within their own species.D.Plants may not grow well when watered too frequently.CPeople speak English in different parts of the world. The same words can be used in different ways, depending on where you live. People can also have completely different ways of saying the same thing. The Oxford English Dictionary(OED) is asking the public to help it add new words. Editors want to find the regional differences in English around the world. They want to expand its record of the language.Last year, the OED, BBC Radio and the Forward Arts Foundation teamed up to find local words in the United Kingdom. It resulted in more than 100 regional words and phrases being added to the dictionary. One was “cuddy wifter”, which m eans a left-handed person. Now, the OED is widening its search to English speakers around the world. Eleanor Maier, an editor at OED, said the response has been great. Editors are listing a bunch of suggestions to include in the dictionary. These include H awaii’s “hammajang”, which means “in a disorderly state”. Another is the word for a swimming costume, “dookers” or “duckers”. It is used in Scotland. The OED also might include the word “frog-drowner”, which Americans might use to describe a downpour of ra in. Another possibility is “brick”. It means “very cold” to people in New Jersey and New。

The government of Nepal is telling climbers they cannot leave trash on the trails. Each climber will have to come down the mountain with at the least 18 pounds of garbage. That's the average amount of trash a climber leaves behind on Qomolangma.Officials say climbers are respons ible for their own trash. “We are not asking climbers to pick up trash left by someone else,” said the Nepal Tourism Ministry. “We just want them to bring back what they took up.”More than 4,000 people have reached the 29,035-foot summit (顶峰) in the past 60 years. Leaving trash along the way helps climbers keep their bags light so they have energy to reach the summit. “The trash problem in Qomolangma is not new.” Burlakoti says. “When the people started to climb the mountain, they started to leave their ga rbage there.” They have left behind bottles, food boxes and equipment. Last year, climbers carried down a total of four tons of trash. The new rule came into effect in April, 2014. To make sure it is followed, climbers will have to deposit money (交保证金) before they climb. Once they climb back down the mountain, officials will check climbers at a return camp to make sure they have the required 18 pounds of trash. If they do, their money will be returned to them. If they do not, climbers will not receive their deposit and they will not be given a permit the next time they want to climb Qomolangma. The goal is to make sure no more litter will be left on Qomolangma. “As we offer Qomolangma to all the people of the world they should take responsibility to clean it.” Burlakoti says, “After seeing the results from this, we will also apply this rule to other mountains.”36.Why does Qomolangma get the nickname the World’s Highest Garbage Dump?A.The white snow on it looks like white trash.B.The government of Nepal transported trash onto it.C.There is too much trash left on it by climbers.D.The government of Nepal has used up the resources on it.37.Who do officials of Nepal think should be responsible for climbers’ trash? To many, he was a mystery. Every afternoon John would wander to the end of the pier (码头) where he fed the seagulls and delighted in the sound of their excited cries as they flew around his head.Often I asked my family questions regarding John. Eventually I gave up as no one could tell me anything about him. As I grew up, my visits to the beach became less frequent, and my memories of John buried in a child's imagination.Last year memories came flooding back as I walked along the coastline, where I noticed a lady feeding the seagulls on the pier, and I decided to introduce myself. Then I came to know that the lady was John's daughter, and after John left this world she carried out the ritual, which had held such importance for her father. In some strange way I felt we shared a bond, each needing to remember. In return, Lucy told me of John's life, his days in the British Navy (海军) during World War I and how he almost lost hope when his ship was attacked by a German U-boat in the North Sea and he found himself in a lifeboat with five others.Close to death, he thought he heard the sound of wings. He put up his hands, only to catch a seagull that had landed on the side of the boat. The seagull saved the lives of the six men as it was used to catch fish, which kept them alive until they reach land. This period of John's life was one he never talked about. But the ritual he first performed as a young man remained a part of him until he died. Now I visit Lucy as often as I can, just to chat or very often walk along the beach to the pier end. We enjoy the comfortable silence, each lost in special memories.41.Seeing John feeding the seagulls, the author might feel__________.A.proud B.worriedC.curious D.guilty42.Why did the author introduce herself to the lady?A.She wanted to make more friends.B.She was also fond of feeding seagulls.C.She was told the lady was John's daughter.D.She was attracted by what the lady was doing.43.The underlined word ''ritual" in the third paragraph can be replaced by _______. But where are we doing all of this waiting, and what does it mean to an impatient society like ours? To understand the issue, let’s take a look at three types of “waits”.The very purest form of waiting is the Watched-Pot Wait. It is without doubt the most annoying of all. Take filling up the kitchen sink(洗碗池) as an example. There is absolutely nothing you can do whil e this is going on but keep both eyes fixed on the sink until it’s full. During these waits, the brain slips away from the body and wanders about until the water runs over the edge of the counter and onto your socks. This kind of wait makes the waiter helpless and mindless.A cousin to the Watched-Pot Wait is the Forced Wait. This one requires a bit of discipline. Properly preparing packaged noodle soup required a Forced Wait. Directions are very specific. “Bring three cups of water to boil, add mix, simmer three minutes, remove from heat, let stand five minutes.”I have my doubts that anyone has actually followed the procedures strictly. After all, Forced Waiting requires patience.Perhaps the most powerful type of waiting is the Lucky-Break Wait. This type of wait is unusual in that it is for the most part voluntary. Unlike the Forced Wait, which is also voluntary, waiting for your lucky break does not necessarily mean that it will happen.Turning one’s life into a waiting game requires faith and hope, and i s strictly for the optimists among us. On the surface it seems as ridiculous as following the directions on soup mixes, but the Lucky-Break Wait well serves those who are willing to do it. As long as one doesn’t come to rely on it, wishing for a few good t hings to happen never hurts anybody. We certainly do spend a good deal of our time waiting. The next time you’re standing at the sink waiting for it to fill while cooking noodle soup that you’ll have to eat until a large bag of cash falls out of the sky, d on’t be desperate. You’re probably just as busy as the next guy. 51.While doing a Watched-Pot Wait, we tend to ___________.A.keep ourselves busyB.get absent-mindedC.grow anxiousD.stay focused52.What is the difference between the Forced Wait and the Watched-Pot Wait?\A.The Forced Wait requires some self-control.B.The Forced Wait makes people passive.C.The Watched-Pot Wait needs directions.D.The Watched-Pot Wait engages body and brain.53.What can we learn about the Lucky-Break Wait?A.It is less voluntary than the Forced Wait.B.It doesn’t always bring the desired result.C.It is more fruitful than the Forced Wait.D.It doesn’t give people faith and hope.54.What does the author advise us to do the next time we are waiting?A.Take it seriously.B.Don’t rely on others.C.Do something else.D.Don’t lose heart.55.The author supports his view by _________.A.exploring various causes of “waits”.B.describing detailed processes of “waits”.C.analyzing different categories of “waits”D.revealing frustrat ing consequences of “waits”第II卷(非选择题)四、阅读表达阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。

It means “very cold” to people in New Jersey and NewYork City. The dictionary has already found that, depending on location, a picture hanging off center might be described as “agley”. It might also be called “catawampous” or “ahoo”.“The OED aims to cover all types of English,” Maier said. That includes scientific words, slang and regional language. Maier also said that it can be difficult for the OED’s editors to identify regional words. The terms are more often spoken than written down. The appeal is called Words Where You Are. It is looking for more suggestions. “We were surprised and pleased by the number of regional words we were able to include,” said Maier.8.Which local word of the following is most likely from regions of the United Kingdom?A.cuddy wifter B.frog-drownerC.agley D.brick9.Which of the following statements is true?A.“Dookers” is closest in meaning to “freezing”.B.The Oxford English Dictionary is planning to add new words by itself.C.Some regional words are more often written down than spoken .D.The OED is searching for regional differences in English around the world.10.What can be inferred from the passage?A.It is challenging to create a complete collection of regional words.B.People are not committed to responding to the appeal for regional words.C.People use regional words only when they are home or with close friends.D.Having an understanding of regional words can be helpful when communicating.11.Which of the following can best summarize the main idea of the passage?A.It’s time to trace the source of local words.B.The same English words can be used to say different things.C.Oxford Dictionary will include more regional words from around the globe.D.Oxford Dictionary aims to enlarge its collection to appeal to locals.DDNA analysis has revealed family relationships between more than 10 generations of Stone Age people at megalithic (巨石的) tombs in Ireland and Sweden. The evidence suggests that megaliths, prehistoric large stone structures, sometimes acted as graves for family groups in northwestern Europe thousands of years ago. The latest findings throw new light on the origins and social structure of the groups that built megaliths in this region—a history that has long been hidden in mystery. For their study, the international team of researchers analyzed the genomes—the complete set of genetic material in a cell—of 24 Stone Age individuals from five megalithic burial sites in Ireland, Scotland and Gotland, a large Swedish island in the Baltic Sea.This analysis showed that many of the individuals buried at each megalith, who all lived between 3,800 B.C.and 2,600 B.C., according to radiocarbon-dating of their remains, were closely related via family ties. The results also showed that the individuals buried at the megaliths were related to Neolithic farmers in northern and western Europe but genetically distinct from other hunter-gatherers. This was particularly noticeable at the Ansarve site on the island of Gotland.“The people buried in the Ansarve tomb are remarkably different on a genetic level compared to the individuals dug out from hunter-gather contexts, showing that the burial tradition in this megalithic tomb, which lasted for over 700 years, was performed by distinct groups with roots in the EuropeanNeolithic expansion,” Magdalena Fraser, co-first author from Uppsala University, said in the statement. 12.What’s the significance of the new findings?A.It reveals the family ties between people in Ireland and Sweden.B.It implies that many people buried in the tombs were closely related.C.It indicates the long-hidden mystery concerning DNA analysis.D.It suggests that the megaliths became tombs thousands of years ago.13.How did the researchers reach their findings?A.By interviewing individuals. B.By travelling to different regions.C.By analyzing genes. D.By studying the burial sites.14.Which is true according to the latest findings?A.Some people buried in the tombs were related to farmers.B.Few people buried in the tombs were genetically different.C.All the people buried at megaliths had family relationships.D.People buried in the Ansarve tomb were dug out 700 years later.15.What’s the main idea of this passage?A.Megaliths served as tombs thousands of years ago.B.People buried at the megaliths were recently analyzed.C.Latest findings shed light on a mystery about burials.D.Stone-Age people in Ireland and Sweden had close ties.第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AIn 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century—most experts date the first novel to Robinson Crusoe in 1719—but nobody wanted to do it professionally. The steam-powered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy(识字)rate in England was under 50%. Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the authors, often with something like “By a lady.”Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral, or just plain bad.In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters — from Oliver Twist to Tiny Tim—were held up as moral touchstones. Today Dickens’ greatness is unchallenged. Removing him from the pantheon(名人堂)of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa. How did Dickens get to the top? For all the feelings readers attach to stories, literature is a numbers game, and the test of time is extremely difficult to pass. Some 60,000 novels were published during the Victorian age, from 1837 to1901; today a casual reader might be able to name a half-dozen of them. It’s partly true that Dickens’ style of writing attracted audiencesfrom all walks of life. It’s partly that his writings rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it’s also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such a singular writer. But as the 200th anniversary of his birth approaches, it is possible — and important for our own culture—to understand how he made himself a lasting one.1.Which of the following best describes British novels in the 18th century?A.They were difficult to understand.B.They were popular among the rich.C.They were seen as nearly worthless.D.They were written mostly by women.2.Dickens is compared with the Mona Lisa in the text to stress________.A.his reputation in FranceB.his interest in modern artC.his success in publicationD.his importance in literature3.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?A.To remember a great writer.B.To introduce an English novel.C.To encourage studies on culture.D.To promote values of the Victorian age.BEl Nifio, a Spanish term for “the Christ child”, was named by South American fisherman who noticed that the global weather pattern, which happens every two to seven years, reduced the amount of fishes caught around Christmas. El Nifio sees warm water, collected over several years in the western Pacific, flow back eastwards when winds that normally blow westwards weaken, or sometimes the other way round. The weather effects both good and bad, are felt in many places. Rich countries gain more from powerful Nifio, on balance, than they lose. A study found that a strong Nifio in 1997 helped American’s economy grow by 15 billion, partly because of better agricultural harvest, farmers in the Midwest gained from extra rain. The total rise in agricultural in rich countries in growth than the fall in poor ones. But in Indonesia extremely dry forests are in flames. A multi-year drought (干旱)in south-east Brazil is becoming worse. Though heavy rains brought about by El Nino may relieve the drought in California, they are likely to cause surface flooding and other disasters. The most recent powerful Nino, in 1997-98, killed around 21,000 people and caused damage worth $36 billion around the globe. But such Ninos come with months of warning, and so much is known about how they happen that governments can prepare. According to the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), however, just 12% of disaster-relief funding in the past two decades has gone on reducing risks in advance, rather than recovery and rebuilding afterwards. This is despite evidence that a dollar spent on risk-reduction saves at least two on reconstruction.Simple improvements to infrastructure (基础设施)can reduce the spread of disease. Better sewers (下水道)make it less likely that heavy rain is followed by an outbreak of the disease of bad stomach. Stronger bridges mean villages are less likely to be left without food and medicine after floods. According to a paper in 2011 by Mr Hsiang and co-authors, civil conflict is related to El Nino’s harmful effects—and the poorer the country, the stronger the link. Though the relationship may not be causal, helping divided communities to prepare for disasters would at least reduce the risk that those disasters are followed by killing and wounding people. Since the poorest are least likely to make up for their losses from disasters linked to El Nino, reducing their losses needs to be the priority.4.What can we learn about El Nino in Paragraph 1?A.It is named after a South American fisherman.B.It takes place almost every year all over the world.C.It forces fishermen to stop catching fish around Christmas.D.It sees the changes of water flow direction in the ocean.5.What may El Ninos bring about to the countries affected?A.Agricultural harvests in rich countries fall.B.Droughts become more harmful than floods.C.Rich countries’ gains are greater than their losses.D.Poor countries suffer less from droughts economically.6.The data provided by ODI in Paragraph 4 suggest that_________.A.more investment should go to risk reductionB.governments of poor countries need more aidC.victims of El Nino deserve more compensationD.recovery and reconstruction should come first7.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?A.To introduce El Nino and its origin.B.To explain the consequences of El Nino.C.To show ways of fighting against El Nino.D.To urge people to prepare for El Nino.CFor Western designers, China and its rich culture have long been an inspiration for Western creative.“It’s no secret that China has always been a source(来源) of inspiration for designers,” says Amanda Hill, chief creative officer at A+E Networks, a global media company and home to some of the biggest fashion(时尚) shows.Earlier this year, the China Through A Looking Glass exhibition in New York exhibited 140 pieces of China-inspired fashionable clothing alongside Chinese works of art, with the aim of exploring the influence of Chinese aesthetics(美学) on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. The exhibition had record attendance, showing that there is huge interest in Chinese influences.“China is impossible to overlook,” says Hill. “Chinese models are the faces of beauty and fashion campaigns that sell dreams to women all over the world, which means Chinese women are not just consumers of fashion —they are central to its movement.” Of course, not only are today’s top Western designers being influenced by China—some of the best designers of contemporary fashion are themselves Chinese. “Vera Wang, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu are taking on Galliano, Albaz, Marc Jacobs—and beating them hands down in design and sales,” adds Hill. For Hill, it is impossible not to talk about China as the leading player when discussing fashion. “The most famous designers are Chinese, so are the models, and so are the consumers,” she says. “China is no longer just another market; in many senses it has become the market. If you talk about fashion today, you are talking about China—its influences, its direction, its breathtaking clothes, and how young designers and models are finally acknowledging that in many ways.”8.What can we learn about the exhibition in New York?A.It promoted the sales of artworks. B.It attracted a large number of visitors.C.It showed ancient Chinese clothes. D.It aimed to introduce Chinese models.9.What does Hill say about Chinese women?A.They are setting the fashion. B.They start many fashion campaigns.C.They admire super models. D.They do business all over the world.10.What do the underlined words “taking on” in paragraph 4 mean?A.learning from B.looking down on C.working with D.competing against 11.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Young Models Selling Dreams to the WorldB.A Chinese Art Exhibition Held in New YorkC.Differences Between Eastern and Western AestheticsD.Chinese Culture Fueling International Fashion TrendsDCalifornia has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor(因素).The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46, 000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent. Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters targeted big trees. Housing development pushed into the woods. Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources(资源).But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010, McIntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development. The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt(融雪).Since the 1930s, McIntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.12.What is the second paragraph mainly about?A.The seriousness of big-tree loss in California.B.The increasing variety of California big trees.C.The distribution of big trees in California forests.D.The influence of farming on big trees in California.13.Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees?A.Ecological studies of forests.B.Banning woodcutting.C.Limiting housing development.D.Fire control measures.14.What is a major cause of the water shortage according to McIntyre?A.Inadequate snowmelt. B.A longer dry season.C.A warmer climate. D.Dampness of the air.15.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.California’s Forests: Where Have All the Big Trees Gone?B.Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California SoonC.Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests?D.Patrick McIntyre: Grow More Big Trees in California第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

21.(6分)We all know what it is like to be unable to turn your head because of a cold in the muscles (肌肉) of your neck, or because an unexpected twist (扭曲) has made your neck ache. The slightest move makes you jump with pain. Nothing could be worse than a pain in the neck. That is why we use the phrase to describe some people who give you the same feeling. We have all met such people. One is the man who always seems to be clapping his hands—often at the wrong time—during a performance in the theater. He keeps you from hearing the actors.Even worse are those who can never arrive before the curtain goes up and the play begins. They come hurrying down to your row of seats. You are comfortably settled down, with your hat and heavy coat in your lap. You must stand up to let them pass. You are proud of yourself-control after they have settled into their seats...Well, what now ... God, one of them is up again. He forgot to go to the men 's room, and once more you have to stand up, hanging on to your hat and coat to let him pass. Now, that is "a pain in the neck".Another, well-known to us all, is the person sitting behind you in the movies. His mouth is full of popcorn (爆米花); he is chewing (嚼) loudly, or talking between bites to friends next to him. None of them remain still. Up and down, back and forth, they go for another bag of popcorn, or something to drink. Then, there is the man sitting next to you at lunch, smoking. He wants you to enjoy it too, and blows smoke across your food into your mouth. We must not forget the man who comes into a bus or subway and sits down next to you, just as close as you will let him. You are reading the newspaper and he gets closer so that he can read the paper with you. He may even turn the paper to the next page before you are ready for it.We also call such a person a "rubber neck", always getting close to where it does not belong, like neighbors who watch all your visitors. They enjoy learning about your personal business. People have a strong dislike for "rubber necks". They hate being watched secretly.1、According to the passage, how do you feel when late comers walk back and forth in front of you in a cinema?A.Disturbed. B.Bored.C.Ignored. The town houses are destroyed or damaged. Amazingly, none of us were severely injured. On the day the tornado hit, there was no indication that severe weather was on its way. The first alert my husband, Jimmy, 67, and I, 65, got came around 9 p.m., from some rolling text on the TV Jimmy was watching. He ran upstairs to find me in our third-floor bedroom, and we changed the channel to our local Pensacola, Florida, station. No sooner had we found coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out. We had three flights of steps to get to the relatively safe closet down on the first floor. As we reached the last flight of steps, our front door blew out. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch whipped through the doorframe. It flew over our heads, missing us by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have stuck through us.Finally, Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn’t get inside himself because of the wind. I grasped Jimmy’s arm as the tornado sucked the door open and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees and scalp(头皮) were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. J. was the most famous one in his town. I met him for the first time at a weekend leadership election. When I showed up, the community leaders gave me this overview of the attending students: “We have all the students here today, from the student president to T. J. Ware, the boy with the longest arrest record in the history of town.”At the start of the election, he was standing against the back wall. He didn’t really join the discussion groups, or didn’t seem to have much to say. But slowly, the interactive games drew him in. The ice melted when the groups started building a list of positive and negative things that had occurred at school that year. T. J. had some definite comments on those situations. All of a sudden he was being treated like a leader. He knew something about poverty, hunger and hopelessness, and everyone was listening. By the end of the election, he had joined the Homeless Project team. The other students on the team elected him co-chairman of the team. But when T. J. showed up at school on Monday morning, he arrived to a firestorm. A group of teachers were protesting (抗议) to the school principal about his being elected co-chairman. They reminded the principal, “He’ll probably steal half the food.”Surprisingly, two weeks later, T. J. and his friends led a group to collect food. They created a school record:2,854 cans of food in just two hours. It was enough to fill the empty shelves in two neighborhood centers, and the food took care of needy families in the area for 75 days. The local newspaper covered theevent with a full-page article the next day. The event he led now collects 9,000 cans of food in one day, taking care of 70 percent of the need for food for one year.Maybe you’ve heard the saying, “A bird with a broken wing will never fly as high.” T. J. reminds us that a bird with a broken wing only needs mending. But once it has healed, it can fly higher than the rest. 1、What was T. J. famous for when the author first met him?A.Collecting food. B.Making troubles.C.Being elected co-chairman. D.Showing up at the election.2、Which of the following is true?A.The groups welcomed T. J.’s opinions.B.T. My three children had been addicte d to this cassette on our previous summer’s road trip.As I began to prepare for our next 500-mile car trip, I came across a book Jim Trelease’s The Read Aloud Handbook. This could be the answer to my problem. I thought. So I put Roald dahl’s James and the Giant Peach into my bag. When I began to read aloud the tale of the boy who escapes the bad guys by hiding inside a giant peach, my three kids argued and wrestled in their seats. But after several lines, they were attracted into the rhythm of the words and began to listen. We soon learned that the simple pleasure of listening to a well-written book makes the long miles pass more quickly. Sometimes the books we read became highlights of the trip. I read Wilson Rawls’s Summer of the Monkeys as we spent two days driving to the beach. We arrived just behind the power crews restoring (恢复) electricity after a tropical storm. The rain continued most of the week, and the beach was covered with oil washed up by the storm. When we returned home, I asked my son what he liked about the trip. Heanswered without hesitation, “The book you read in the car.”Road trips still offer challenges, even though my children now are teenagers. But we continue to read as we roll across the country. And I'm beginning to see that reading aloud has done more than help pass the time. For at least a little while, we are not shut in our own electronic worlds. And maybe we’ve started something that will pass on to the next generation.1、Why did the author start reading in the car?A.She wanted to have a better journey. B.She wanted to keep a family traditionC.Her children were addicted to music. D.She wanted to kill the time.2、How did the children react after the author read a few lines?A.They kept quarrelling. B.They enjoyed reading on the road.C.They had a good time on the beach. D.They thought it had passed too quickly.4、Which can be the best title for the text?A.Better Reading than Traveling B.Books that Changed My ChildrenC.Road Trips Full of Challenges D.Reading Makes Great Road Trips第三部分语言知识运用(共两节)第一节(每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项.26.(30分)I spent last summer volunteering at a hospital.
