二、阅读理解
1.
The United States is full of automobiles. There are still many families without c ars, but some families have two or even more. However, cars are used for mor e than pleasure. They are a necessary part of life.
Cars are used for business. They are driven to offices and factories by workers who ha ve no other way to get to their jobs. When salesmen are sent to different parts of th
e city, they have to drive in order to carry their products. Farmers have to drive into t he city in order to get supplies.
Sometimes small children must be driven to school. In some cities school buses are pr ovided only when children live more than a mile from the school. When the children are too young to walk that far, their mothers take turns driving them to school. One mother drives on Monday, taking her own children and the neighbors’children as well. Another mother drives on Tuesday, another on Wednesday, and so on. This is called forming a car pool. Men also form car pools, with three or four men taking turns driv ing to the place where they all work.
More car pools should be formed in order to put fewer automobiles on the road and to use less gasoline. Parking is a great problem, and so is the traffic in and around cities. Too many cars are being driven. Something will have to be done about the use of cars.

How men first learnt to invent words is unknown, in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, someho w invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed u pon certain signs called letters, which could be combined to represent those so unds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken, or writ ten in letters, we call words.
The power of words, then, lies in their associations -- the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience, an d the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad eve nts of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of wo rds that mean something to us increases.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express thes e thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming(迷人的) and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words w hich sing like music, and which by their position and association can move me
n to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use th em accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar(粗俗的).

In my long life I have seen many changes in out habits and customs and cond itions in general. I think that you might be interested if I told you some of the m.
The world I entered at the age of eighteen when I became a medical student was a world that knew nothing of such advanced things as planes, films, radios or telephones. It was a very cheap world. Prices were stable. When I entered St.Thomas’Hospital I rent a set of rooms in Vincent Square for which I paid 1 8 shillings(先令) a week. My landlady provided me with a very good breakfast before I went to the hospital and a dinner when I came back at half past six. I only had to pay for the breakfasts and dinners twelve shillings a week. For fo ur-pence I lunched at St.Thomas’on bread and butter and a glass of milk. I w as able to live there very well, pay my fees, buy my necessary instruments, clot he myself, and have a lot of fun on fourteen pounds a month. And I could al ways pawn(当掉)my microscope for three pounds.
I spent five years at St.Thomas’Hospital. I was a bad student, for my heart, as you might have guessed, was not in it. I wanted, I had always wanted, to be a writer, and in the evenings, after my dinner, I wrote and read. Before long, I wrote a novel called“Liza of Lambeth”, which I sent to a publisher and was ac cepted. It came out during my last year at the hospital and it was successful. It was of course an accident, but I did not know that. I felt I could afford to gi ve up medicine and make writing my profession; so, three days after I graduat

How much living space does a person need? What happens when his space requireme nts are not adequately met? Sociologists and psychologist are conducting experiments on rats to try to determine the effect of overcrowded conditions on man. Recent studi es have shown that the behavior of rats is greatly affected by space. If rats have adeq uate living space, they eat well, sleep well, and reproduce well. However, if their living conditions become too crowded, their behavior patterns and even their health percept ibly change. They cannot sleep and eat well, and signs of fear and tension become ob vious. The more crowded they are, the more they tend to bite each other and even ki ll each other. Thus for rats, population and violence are directly related. Is this a natur al law for human society as well? Is adequate space not only desirable, but also essen tial for human survival?
