(一)The Language of Music
A painter hangs his or her finished picture on
a wall, and everyone can see it. A composer writes
a work, but no one can hear it until it is performed.
Professional singers and players have great
responsibilities, for the composer is utterly
dependent on them. A student of music needs as long
and as arduous a training to become a performer as a medical student needs to become a doctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscular proficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singers practice breathing every day, as their vocal chords would be inadequate without controlled muscular support. String players practice moving the fingers of the left hand up and down, while drawing the bow and to and fro with the right arm – two entirely different movements. Singers and instrumentalists have to be able to get every not perfectly in tune. Pianists are spared this particular anxiety, for the notes are already there, waiting for them, and it is the piano tuner’s responsibility to tune the instrument for them. But they have their own difficulties: the hammers that hit the strings have to be coaxed not to sound like percussion, and each overlapping tone has to sound clear. This problem of getting clear texture is one that confronts student conductors: they have to learn to know every note of the music and how it should sound, and they have to aim at controlling these sounds with musical knowledge and understanding. Great artists are those who are so thoroughly at home in the language of music that they can enjoy performing works written in any century.
The Music Within
Life ... What is it?
生命……
See it in the colors of autumn,
A gentle snowfall in winter,
A sudden shower in spring,
The radiance of a summer day.
Behold it in the laughter
Of the young and the old.
Know of it in a surge of hope,
The blessings that are bountiful.
What is life?
It is joy, awareness,
And the music within.

Orleans to celebrate the first annual International Jazz Day. UNESCO( United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recently set April 30 as a day to raise awareness of jazz music, its significance, and its potential as a unifying(联合) voice across cultures.
Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S. the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations.
It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that. As the Kennedy Center’s artistic adviser for jazz, Moran hopes to widen the audience for jazz, make the music more accessible, and preserve its history and culture.
"Jazz seems like it’s not really a part of the American appetite," Moran tells National Public Radio’s reporter Neal Conan. "What I’m hoping to accomplish is that my generation and younger start to reconsider and understand that jazz is not black and write anymore. It’s actually color, and it’s actually digital."Moran says one of the problems with jazz today is that the entertainment aspect of the music has been lost. "The music can’t be presented today the way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same," says Moran.
Last year, Moran worked on a project that arranged Fats Waller’s music for a dance party, "just to kind of put it back in the mind that Waller is dance music as much as it is concert music,"says Moran. "For me, it’s the recontextualization. In music, where does the emotion(情感) lie? Are we, as humans, gaining any insight(感悟) on how talk about ourselves and how something as abstract as a Charlie Parker record gets us into a dialogue about our emotions and our thoughts? Sometimes we lose sight that the music has a wider context," says Moran, "so I want to continue those dialogues. Those are the things I want to foster."
28. Why did UNESCO set April 30 as International Jazz Day?
A. To remember the birth of jazz.
B. To protect cultural diversity.
C. To encourage people to study music.
D. To recognize the value of jazz.
29. What does the underlined word "that" in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Jazz becoming more accessible.
B. The production of jazz growing faster.
C. Jazz being less popular with the young.
D. The jazz audience becoming larger.
30. What can we infer about Moran’s opinion on jazz?
A. It will disappear gradually.
B. It remains black and white.
C. It should keep up with the times.
D. It changes every 50 years.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Exploring the Future of Jazz
B. The Rise and Fall of Jazz
C. The Story of a Jazz Musician
D. Celebrating the Jazz Day
Jason Moran
Despite the celebrations, though, in the U.S.
the jazz audience continues to shrink and grow older, and the music has failed to connect with younger generations可知尽管UNESCO为爵士乐设了纪念日,但美国的爵士乐听众依然在减少,并且年龄在老化,爵士乐没能将年轻一代人连接起来。
再结合It’s Jason Moran’s job to help change that(是Jason Moran的工作是帮助改变那一情况)可推测that指代的是前文中爵士乐在年轻一代人中失去吸引力的现象。
The music can’t be presented today the
way it was in 1908 or 1958. It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same可知Moran认为现在爵士乐不能以1908或1958年的方式来呈现,因为世界已经不同了,所以爵士乐必须不断进步,说明随着时代的发展,爵士乐也要跟上时代才不会被年轻一代所抛弃。

Reducing Test Anxiety
As students throughout the state prepare to take their tests, they will feel some added anxiety. Some of that anxiety is good, but too much can have a bad effect on test performance. Here are some methods to reduce test anxiety.
1 This is useful for two reasons: A) You'll be less nervous and B) you'll
do better. A recent study at UC Berkeley showed that students who were tested on information they just learned actually did better than those who were asked to document what they were learning. 2 Then you can grade it for each other and harvest the benefits. The more real it feels, the more prepared you'll feel and be when the test day arrives.
Review that morning. 3 You want to be as calm and relaxed as possible and reviewing right before the test will do that. What's more, you'll regain the information. So on your way to class, whip out those flashcards for the last time.
Consider listening to classical music. Though it doesn't make .you smarter like some people believe,it can improve your memory. If you want to get super specific, listen to music that’s 60 BPM. 4
Do the easy questions first. An easy way to get stressed out and lose your cool is to focus on questions you don't know the answers to. 5 . Don't fall into the trap move on to what you do know.
Then you can hit the hard stuff dead on.
A. Take a pre-test.
B. Ask for Help from your desk mate.
C. That’s when the benefits will be highest.
D. Stay up late and drink as much coffee as possible.
E. So write up a pre-test and have your friend do the same!
F. This is good for the exact same two reasons as stated in the previous step.
G. You start worrying about the clock and thinking about how you didn't study enough.
